Preparing My 1992 Dodge D350 Ramp Truck For A Crazy Road Trip Across America

- In this video: 1972-1993 Dodge truck windshield replacement; Dodge truck ball joint replacement; how to mount an underbody toolbox; first gen Dodge front end alignment specs; how much does a first gen Cummins dually weigh? And much, much more.
In the last video on this truck, I built out the frame extension and ramp truck bed in three and a half days. And while I was able to park my Charger on the bed at the end of that video, the truck was still very far from ready to drive across the country with my Demon on the back. So on today's installment, I have to get the truck ready for an absolutely insane cross country burn at the last possible moment. I'm sure that will go great! - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Long videos, short videos, just keep putting them out, we'll keep watching
Old timer taught me to install captured glass with a rope and soapy water by putting the gasket on the glass and feeding clothesline rope in the channel of the glass.Admitadely this is the 2 man method.Luxuries.
The life of a hauler is never "it's done, and ready", its always, "that'll do for now"
I'm not hauler but that's how I roll
the long video showing all the setbacks makes me feel better about my own projects going to hell. thanks.
That’s how it is! I try to make that end of things very obvious to the casual observer, as I’m sure you can tell. An honest accounting of the project roller coaster.
Kudos for the Harry Nilsson shout out. Guy was a genius
Im exhausted from all the work you did in a bunch of days!! Nice job!!
If you think you’re exhausted now, just wait for the road trip video! I’m still living it 😅
There better be celebratory pizza
Just a thought?
When bouncing on the concrete roads in the Midwest my suggestion is to add a WELD CHECK AT EVERY FUEL STOP.
RESPECTFULLY 😊.
Last time I drove cross country the steering Box all most lost all it's bolts.
Safe Driving ❤
Good thinking. The roads out here range from ok to GOOD GOD, OUCH. One of the welds on my headache rack is now attaching the headache rack to air… I have been monitoring the frame areas where I found old cracks. So far so good.
Cheers to Mitchel! Thanks for saving what's left of Jamie's sanity.
I know a guy that had a really nice 1993 extended cab 4x4 diesel and his new wife didn't like the truck after the steering shaft came loose after driving down a really windy road and so he parked it and it's been getting sun baked in a field for the last 15 years while the mice and rust moved in and he is one of those guys who will never ever sell it and would rather let it fall to pieces like the rest of his vehicle's that he never ever will fix or drive. Why do people do that is something I'll never understand.
Good job Jamie.
They always say "I'm going to fix it up some day."
"Yeah, fairleads wear boots and you gotta believe me
Yeah, I saw it, I saw it, I tell you no lies"
Alright, that’s good 😅
It's amazing how fast this done on the assembly line 😊
Seriously!
The utility of a Ramp truck is awesome... Still developing my bed plan!
That Demon on the back is very cool.
I spotted the Demon ball cap also.
Great logo.
WOW! What a thrash! Good luck, Jamie!
I saw a video of a guy using fireworks to clean an air filter. A small explosive inside going off blows out the dust, dirt, and debris.
Brilliant!
Man now I want a cool dodge ramp truck. Well done Jamie. You’re a legend man.
“Thanks for playing “ LOL
You weren't kidding when you said you put a "ton" of hours, time and money into that truck. What a transformation from when we first saw it on the channel. Definitely a cool build and having a cummins powered, chrysler built ramp truck is sure cool! Safe travels to Tennessee! Looking forward to watching some racing!
It could just be me but I swear you sounded like Fozzie Bear when you said...."Also watch your nuts when you're doing this". 😆
I floated glass on an assembly line for a couple of years. It was fun now it's all automated.
Your truck is really rather light compared to many diesels these days. Certainly lighter than our third gens. I think your rig is golden. BTW, some 1" thick fiberglass insulation from HomeDepot behind those door panels makes a nice improvement - at least it did in my first gen.
Have a great trip!
I'm really looking forward to future postings on this road trip. Murphy's law assures us that interesting things will happen, which we'll all want to follow. It's great to see that Prudence will be going with you. We haven't seen much of her lately, and she really does need to get out more often.
I know. She has been so sad and lonely in the shop. She seems much happier to be out here on the road.
Stay safe on your trip.
Jamie this is going to be great Content drive safe my TH-cam friend. And go get him I mean UTG. 😂👍👍👍🌮🌮🌮
what a fantastic transformation jamie mate.brilliant channel and such a cool car hauler.
You did a great job. Your trip has proven that. What an amazing adventure!
Great job on the ramp truck... Prudence is well deserving of a cape and cowl so when the truck is doing it's job it can remain in disguise...one more step to world domination...good content and thanks 🔧🔧🐐👍
I absolutely loved watching this episode and look forward to the next ones.
I respect what all you went through to make this trip and race happen best of luck to you man, I would love to build an old tow rig, like with a 70 something cab, thanks for sharing your shop and hobbies be safe and God bless Jamie
Awesome work! Wishing you a fun safe trouble free trip!👍
I'm impressed too !
I like what you did, but as long as you like what you did is only thing that matters. Not who's least upset...
Good Luck Jamie, I'm rooting for your success in making it there and back with a win.
This is a great long form. Fun editing time = a bonus for us!
You've really put yourself in a box this time.
Classic 🤣
"Looks like Ray Charles painted it with his feet" 😃😃🏁🏁
Once you get the gravel in your driveway like you want it you can dump a bag of Portland cement in a lawn spreader and get cheap concrete. With the rain you get multiple applications may be needed
😅
Hecho en USA is always the way to go. 😁👍
Man u had me rolling. I totally went through a 1980 Dodge, non duley,1 ton with a utility bed on it. 360/ 727 . I mean did everything mechanical. Radiator, heater core etc. u get the picture. Brand new 1980 truck in 2001.
Going camping, pulling my 5th wheel. Man it came a gully - washer. THE ONLY thing I didn't replace, the windshield wiper motor went out.
Dodges have attitudes !!!!!
This one magically fixed itself again and has been good ever since. Probably because I bought a new one and it’s behind the seat. The old one is now on its best behavior…
Skip the toolbox liner. Go to Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, etc and get the 24" commercial carpet squares. Dirty cheap and works great!
Jamie, longer videos don't bother me at all. I am sure most everyone agrees that watches you regularly. I will say I wish you showed the whole thing with the windshield, or could make a separate video with that footage. Hopefully your trip goes well.
I did cut the windshield footage significantly. I thought it was boring. So that’s my bad. Haha. But I did show a condensed version of every step.
Sunrise Red from Rustolium is an almost perfect match for the old Mopar red
Jamie giving polishing a turd new meaning!
Technically that windshield is still in one piece 😂
The little shards on my seat beg to differ 😅
Skills + Gumption = DDG
Great job Jamie !!!
most videos i skip threw. yours i do not. you just make me want to warch all the way threw. i think cause your one of us.
Thanks! I certainly like to think I am.
Great video!
PERSERVERANCE is Key...Just like running errands at peak traffic hour..lol..This whole Vid reminded me of those agility competitions where the dog runs through every box and jumps through every hoop in its path, for pat on the head and a dog biscuit...
It felt like that for me too, but nobody ever patted my head. 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jaimie, you are the GOAT. Literally.....
I really want a hood ornament shaped like Prudence’s head. This doesn’t seem like an unreasonable request.
Something should be available. I've seen all kinds of animal hood ornaments on semi's ranging from ducks with cigars to donkeys with shades. A goat should exist....I'll start looking.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I bet Vic could print you one.
It looks a lot better on camera than in person
It really, really does 🤣
after watching this I seen utg's video and THE END WAS GREAT! Cant wait for sundays show. This has been very entertaining too me........ Free fudgey!
Safe travels buddy.
Brilliant!!!
Go get 'em!
I have full faith in the epoxy fuel/gas tank fix. Mines been holding for 2 years on the very bottom of the tank
It’s holding up perfectly!
That dodge truck looks like a old porta potty pumper truck we used to have in our fleet or maybe its twin looking at the hood fading thanks for great video
That looked like a lot of not fun things, but I hope it's all worth it in the end and you have a blast on the road. Good luck!
It's like that truck is possessed by a Demon :-) Speaking of that, don't forget there's some storage in the car.
Oh trust me… I haven’t forgotten
Hella makes some replacement lights for old sealed beam bulbs.
They are a glass housing that take a replaceable h4 bulb.
You can put 100w high beam, 55w low beam bulbs in them.
They are WAY WAY better than seals beams.
Much brighter, but more importantly, a noticeably better pattern.
They are not priced to bad either.
I’m familiar with them. I prefer the brighter sealed beams.
Wishing you a safe and reliable journey to UTG and back! Will be monitoring your trip as I am preparing my 92 Dodge CTD to mission readiness (I can relate to the trials and tribulations your enduring) for a July trip to Bend Oregon to ride the Oregon BDR w/a Beta 500 in tow.
Nice! Video update will be coming today. But funny enough, I drove my ramp truck through Bend on the way out here.
Freedom from Big Air.The struggle is real.
Dude.. you worked your a__ off getting ready for your trip! I think I was like that at your age... I dunno, that was a long time ago.. yeah, anyway ( did you notice after watching like a thousand of your videos I'm talking like you).. I bet you slept good! loved the video❤
and reeeemember" if at first you don't succeed.. work on something else"
Enjoyed. Wish I still had my 1990 even though it was a 360, not a Cummins.
My first thoughts were, yes its the right windshield and please wash it first!!!!! 🙏🏼 great now you're gonna have much fun cleaning that from the inside knucklehead dadgumit! I heard my grandfather saying that to me. 😂😂
Oh I knew as I was doing it… haha. But I was out of glass cleaner and nearly out of the other stuff.
One more as you add entries you know entries try to think about balancing things on each side of the bed. That truck is badass I like it.✌️brother
Of course. I thought about that a lot. I load the car one board to the right.
Awesome job always love the sarcasm 👏 👍 😀 lol 👌
Had occasion to say "that's not going anywhere," while strapping fence panels into the bed of my Toyota pickup with bungee cords. It worked, but it could have gone either way. I thought of you.
Nice, nice. Haha.
You should order a piece of UHMW polyethylene from McMaster-Carr for the winch cable rub rail. The stuff is super hard and super slick. It’s perfect for that.
Pretty neat
Back in the day the truckers slept in boxes like this 34:42 mounted to the trailer, so why not. Dont forget to
add 300 more pounds 35:44 ;-)
Go Jamie Go!!!!!
Sweet...I was number 340on the like button.
This whole rig seems familiar. Remember I recommended the pepper can additive 😂
Right, like somebody drove it through your yard or something. Hey, the magic radiator fix bottle worked too! But it did cost more 🤣
Thanks!
Thank you!
The "Dark Time" 😂
@Jamie...Non Stick stuff? Since we live in this moisture laden state I know Line X is expensive but it does seal quite well. If you go that route ask for aggressive texture, its super grippy even when wet. I used to shoot Rhino Liner in and on just about everything. Have a safe trip and good luck winning.
On the onboard air, can you add a compressor to the engine like big rigs? Then you can fill tires too.
I don’t think I want to do line x. I hate how oil and grime get stuck in the texture. Yes, that’s exactly what I’m going to do actually.
When you're in that last stretch getting ready for a Road Trip- it's like everything is blowing up like that Jackass Movie opening???
Hope everything is going well!!
This is the way…
One thing i myself like to do on my regular cabs is putting sliding curtains on the rear window. I hate the sun beating on me. I don't know if it's legal...but I do it anyways.
Yeee Yeee!
Great
Dollar store drawer liners. Cheaper than the toolbox liners.
Harry reference, I want to see your records. Kudos.
My brother mounts his winch on a class 3 trailer hitch plug in. It interchanges with all of his vehicles and trailers.
Oh yeah. I’m well familiar with that technique.
you keeping making improvements pretty soon that New (old) trailer towing rig of yours will be parked up like your wifes wagon. Can you do the cab swap next I wanna see that like yesterday
What´s gonna go wrong with a Safety Goat on the dashboard? Nothing(major)! Tony`s gonna need his kane when it´s all said and done.
I think all first gens leaned to the left. Mine measures exactly the same from ground to fender lip on each side, and it still leans. Not sure how that is even possible, but it is somehow.
If you get a snatch block and double that line back it would pull a lot easier don’t you know. It might be a little slower, but it’ll pull there a whole lot more power.
Yes, I do know. I also don’t want to deal with that. For one thing, the size of the block in the way won’t allow me to pull the car up all the way if pulled by the k frame, which is the ideal place.
Oh I can see a chrome or black cigar smoking duck hood emblem on the big red machine.
The Convoy duck! That's definitely in my ultimate vision.
Clay bar the windshield and put a good coat of wax on it. Never need to turn on the wipers.
Never heard that. Interesting.
It’s not race car science-
Step 1: you put the lime in the coconut.
Step 2: you drink ‘em both down.
What’s the issue? 😊
Is there a preferred viewing order for the next phase of this adventure? Your video, Uncle Tony’s video, JudtMoparJoe’s video?
I think Joe’s would be the best first episode. It explains the important changes, shows me learning to drive, and sets the stage for what happens next. My video starts before the race but other than that either tells essentially the same story. Tony’s is definitely more funny.
What brand idler arm did you get? I installed a Moog center drag link and idler arm on my '92 D250 Cummins and there is zero play in my steering now. Moog is the only aftermarket brand I'll use when replacing balljoints, steering components or anything suspension related when sticking with an OEM setup. Plus most of their parts are made in the USA.
A cheap garbage one. I should have ponied up there. I didn’t realize it would be floppy out of the box.
@@DeadDodgeGarage was it made of Chinesium?...😂 Definitely scoop up the Moog parts. Well worth the extra money and peace of mind.
Ahh yeah. To the haters. Let them paddle their canoe.or whatever. You are screwing this goat. They just need to hold his head. Best of luck. Keep em coming. B safe brother 🙏
Oh the truck is a le the windshield pillar trim and the headliner trim is supposed to come off and then it is more simple to install
Windshield trim has been committed to the scrap heap of history so that problem is solved. A pillars were only slightly in the way of sliding the plastic tool between the glass and gasket.
35:51: Note to future Jamie: pack an extra diff in that box ! :)
I allllmost did… if I had, that one wouldn’t have broken 😅
For your speedo problem my buddy had the same issue on a 92 Cummins 5 spd turned out his speed sensor on trans the speedo cable end to the trans was worn a piece of duct tape over the cable end to take up the slack and no more issues he drove it for years with a new sensor in his glove box never used just back off the nut and yours is probably the same problem seen it lots on dodges
It’s an electrical problem. The speedo worked perfectly until I replaced the battery and messed with some of the horrible rat’s nest that is the PCM harness. I will get to the bottom of it, but I’ve had no time.
Hey Jamie..give uncle Tony a run for his money.. don't be too hard on him just spank him lightly remember he's old and set in his ways..lol..come back a camp..good luck.. Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I forget what the law says, but I think you are good NOT having the 3 center lights when under 8' wide... Should check that...
Also, I'd be interested to see what your total weight with car and bodies is. The angle issue is why so many people build WEDGE trucks, but you lose the flat deck carrying capabilities.. Big thing is, most who have a wedge truck, also have a pick up.. You COULD build a raised deck over your present flat deck!!!!! Probably a 3-5 inch rise would take care of most everything you'd ever carry..
That was my plan! A removable set of ramps. It leaves more storage space in between them so that’s an added benefit. I just didn’t have the time.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Did you get a chance to weigh everything (ALL IN), when you got to the race?? You mentioned changing out the rear axle at some future point. I'm wondering if it's worth it or maybe put it on a diet, (IF NEEDED)....
I got back window gun rack if you want it. Also let me know what you find on speedometer... looks like yours is doing the same as mine. Clicking miles but no speed
No, mine is not clicking miles. This is an electronic speedo, and it is no longer getting an electronic signal. Sounds like you have a bad speedometer.
Jamie, I have a vinyl die-cutting machine and I could send you white lettering for your "not for hire" and GVW weight.
Appreciated. But I think I’d rather just hand paint it better. You wouldn’t believe how many compliments I’ve gotten for that. Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Right on, man. I actually dig it too.
