the problem with buying a reasonable spec on this laptop is that the 16 GB + 512 GB storage option brings the total to $1499 which is just soooo close to the 14’’ MacBook Pro base model with the same specs which went for $1849 iirc on sale on Amazon. For only a couple hundred bucks more there are substantial upgrades over the m2 air. Maybe this was Apple’s pricing strategy to get people to buy the 14’’ mbp though
Those specs sound reasonable to us tech geeks but for the majority of people it's not necessary to have 16gb or an internal 512gb storage. A lot of people use airs to write notes at uni, stream video and music and keep their photos mostly on the cloud or an external. I almost feel like they're doing this on purpose. The M1 MBA was sufficient for a lot of professionals. It was almost too good, so they had to throttle it back to encourage people to spend more. Ultimately, I went with a 14" MBP M1 for $1616 at BB (Open-Box).
Seriously the M1 air was more powerful than their best intel macbook pros, which professionals had been using for ages. So ya most people don't need more
@madan pal the 256k and 4K random reads and writes are about the same if not faster in the m2 air so for most users they will never notice the performance difference or have a better experience even on the 256gb air. Also, hardly any users spring for a TB3 nvme pcie SSD external drive. They are either using an HDD or at best a USB3.1 Gen 2 SSD that maxes out around 1GBps. So they will never have an occasion to utilize this speeds pretty much. File copies to the same drive are instantaneous now with the APFS filesystem.
I was investigating our web app performance issues in Safari recently (actually, some Safari dev tools are better than Chrome ones) And stumbled upon the following thing, I will cite... By default, macOS Monterey enables “Low power mode” on Battery power and disables it when using a Power Adapter. Safari, it seems, is programmed to interpret this setting to mean that it should reduce the number of times it paints to the screen to prolong battery life.
Great video, big Anthony fan here. When you were talking about the SSD speeds and the toll that stuff like Final Cut will take on it - I hear you, BUT if I'm doing enough video editing where that would matter, I'm not buying a MacBook Air to do it. In that scenario, I would be getting a 14" Pro.
Why? 512gb+ SSD, CPU, and GPU are all the same. It’s not going to make a difference until the M2 pro comes out. Edit: I suppose if you need the fan that makes sense but I doubt the Air thermal throttles much.
@@koalaunknown not the same. M1 pro has 512GB with faster write/read speeds than the Air (don’t know why). Also, base model has 16GB RAM. Like MKBHD said: the M1 Pro runs circles around the M2 Air
fair, the m1 pro is hands down a better product to buy for creative use, *however* the fact that the current controversy is measuring the speed in stuff like rendering final cut projects is amazing. like, it's a MacBook air, the fact it can run final cut renders faster than most last gen MacBook pros is insane. I wish they would disclose the SSD speed thing, but this is a thin and light entry level mac, and it's plenty capable for creative work as long as it's not more than 50% of your use case
So Apple’s cheapest ‘new’ laptop is $1200. But you shouldn’t buy that. You should upgrade it to the $1500 one. And better yet $200 more for 16GB of memory. And all that you needed was a light laptop for browsing and office work. p.s. the $1500 one is €1870 in Europe. Because Apple tax.
Ah yes. Stupid prices in Europe. And the base model is 1500€? Instead of 1200€ that it should be (let’s say 1300€ because of VAT and transport). Retarded prices.
$1500 is without sales tax, which you always need to add for US prices unless you live kn a state without them like Delaware. With current bad Euro conversion rates (1=1) and let’s say 19% sales tax in Germany, you are at 1785€. Same model is 1850€ in Germany. So the Apple “tax“ in Europe is not as bad as you think it is, especially since e.g. in Germany there are also more bullshit taxes like GEMA which actually charge you for any sold phone, tablet and computer to accompany for “private copies of music“. I shit you not, this is an actual tax and costs you like 13,72€ for notebooks.
@@neappx Forgive me if this is ignorant, I'm not familiar with the tax systems in Europe. Also, I may not understand what you've said. If the product is listed as 1850€ on the German website, would the 19% German sales tax not be applied to that amount making the final cost 2,201.50€? The US cost would be $1,594 (with avg US sales tax of 6.35%) vs $2,201( Germany with 1€=$1). Difference of $607 (32% more expensive). Or is the 1850€ on the website already including sales tax? I'm not trying to be argumentative or call you out. I'm just confused on the differences in costs haha
@@neappx Ahh, I see. That makes much more sense then haha. I wish the US would do that with their products, it would be much more consumer friendly. When we buy gas, the price already includes all the taxes, but not with other products. Thanks!

Unless you are doing specific things, you will never notice that SSD speed difference. Copying large files every day? Sure, maybe. The most important figures are the random reads/writes.
@@andreewert6576 True. It’s really not a huge deal. Basically, if you’re copying a bunch of vids from one folder to another, that’s where you’ll see a speed difference. The wedge design is so ugly. I don't know why every laptop manufacturer adopted it. A laptop looks better with even thickness throughout the chassis and also has more room for components.
The base model pricing scheme is so obviously a dishonest strategy to drive down the perceived actual price of the product. The base model sucks so bad it's not really valid and should honestly be considered a different product, so the upgraded one should be considered the "base model price."
When I was looking for a MacBook with M2 I was torn between the Pro and the Air, inevitably I went with the Pro as I needed a little more cooling than I would get with the Air. The additional fact that there was the issue with the SSD's that are being presented, it made me go the direction of the Pro. I don’t do any intensive rendering though.
sometimes you bite the apple, sometimes the apple bites you
10:07 Because Apple still enforces only one external display natively on the MacBook Air, even though it's more than capable of running two external displays since M1. That's why I have to use a Wavlink DisplayLink hub.
Correction: The MBA M2 has 2 thunderbolt 3 ports just like the previous model
Yeah that's what I thought lol
Wait wait, it says thunderbolt/ usb4 ports. I think that's what he meant.
I fucking should know this, i ordered one 🤦🏾♂️

Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports with support for:
Charging

Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40Gb/s)
USB 4 (up to 40Gb/s)
USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)
M1 / M2 can't support multiple external displays because the chips for displays are in the SoC and they are relatively big, so Apple is only including one.
I've been using my M1 Air daily for almost a year now. I personally love that it DOESN'T have a fan, because it keeps silent the 99% of the time the CPU isn't at full speed. I'm not afraid to keep the computer at weird angles or on bad surfaces because it's completely solid.
@Garrus Vakarian even with the option to run the laptop in passive mode, when it heats up the fan starts to spin anyway...
MBP M1 has only once spinned up the fan, when I was playing stellaris :D
Also doesn’t suck up dust etc over time!
I agree, it was a big selling point for me. And really makes complete sense considering almost all smartphones and tablets don't have fans and have plenty of power. GG Apple!
@@Fasneocroth so apple turned their laptops into smartphones? so when a new update pops up i would expect my laptop to run slow?
the problem with buying a reasonable spec on this laptop is that the 16 GB + 512 GB storage option brings the total to $1499 which is just soooo close to the 14’’ MacBook Pro base model with the same specs which went for $1849 iirc on sale on Amazon.
If you aren't one of those people and must have an apple laptop then the higher tier macbook pro that antony references makes sense. Because as you've pointed out extras are shit value on all apple products.

Apple does something like this with the new ipad air as well

Lol if 16gb is necessary to you then just buy the pro. 95% of the people buying the air do not need 16gb of RAM. The only upgrade that people might wanna do is upgrade to the 512gb ssd so you have 2 NAND chips. And where I live the price difference between the 14” pro and the M2 air with 512gb ssd is still €500

So ya most people don't need more
I was planning on getting a new air in january 22, to replace my 2013 one, and I am so glad I waited mainly for the MagSafe and the new color
I'm not going to lie to anyone. I want to buy this just to have an excuse to buy the craigbook skin.
I'm right with ya bro
I want it for a Macbook Pro m2

I was investigating our web app performance issues in Safari recently (actually, some Safari dev tools are better than Chrome ones)
And stumbled upon the following thing, I will cite...
Yeah people are complaining about the speeds but who will buy an air with no fan to use as their machine to make money ??
I think if anyone is doing any heavy work go for the 14 mbp. The air isn’t really meant to be your main machine especially without a fan.
I waited for the M2 to release, got a great deal on the last bit of remaining M1 air base model stock and bought it
So Apple’s cheapest ‘new’ laptop is $1200.
@@yellowood252 Listed prices in Europe for consumers are pretty much always the final price, including taxes. So 1850€ listed means I pay 1850€.
@@neappx Ahh, I see. That makes much more sense then haha. I wish the US would do that with their products, it would be much more consumer friendly. When we buy gas, the price already includes all the taxes, but not with other products. Thanks!

I really want an Air. But 16GB of RAM like you say is essential - immediately that with the not-slow SSD is the same price as the equivalent M2 Pro... and that has a fan so you'll get better performance. It's annoying because it's basically the only 2 things I care about - 16GB of RAM and a super fast SSD. I'd otherwise be happy with the slower or less well-cooled CPU.
Suddenly we're talking about a 1700 GBP laptop.
Unless you are doing specific things, you will never notice that SSD speed difference. Copying large files every day? Sure, maybe. The most important figures are the random reads/writes.
@@LeftJoystick copying *where* is my question. If you're using any kind of network or USB 3.0, you're likely limited by that.
@@andreewert6576 True. It’s really not a huge deal. Basically, if you’re copying a bunch of vids from one folder to another, that’s where you’ll see a speed difference. Everything else: external storage will be your bottleneck.
I’ve got a stupid fast PCIE nvme drive in my desktop (PC). 7gigs per second or something? Literally cannot tell it’s that fast lol. I’d still be fine with my old 1.5gig/second Intel drive.
@@LeftJoystick so many people fall for this. My boot drive is a PCIe3 1TB Samsung 970. There are folks who would call sub 3GB/s performance "too slow" today. Meanwhile, i've pondered going for SATA-M.2s as boot disks for friend's builds, because windows, browers, programs and many games just feel the same with 500MB/s as they do with 5000. Not saying i wouldn't buy NVMEs, it just use them for stuff that actually profits.
@@andreewert6576 Yep for sure. I’ve thrown SATA SSDs in friend’s builds (Samsung EVO models). They work great. No complaints about them being “slow”. Even DRAM Cache is a mostly unnecessary feature **unless you’re using the drive as a system/OS drive**. For a non-power user/someone who doesn’t copy loads of videos/photos, DRAM cache on a secondary drive is pretty much inconsequential. I’m 99% sure my 2TB secondary Nvme drive doesn’t have a DRAM cache. Just use it for games - works fine. Really only matters in a ‘high write’ environment.

Thanks Anthony, I really appreciate your advice. I got the 512gb M1 air a little over a year ago with the intention of using that while I waited for the M1 Pro to come out. When I was looking for a MacBook with M2 I was torn between the Pro and the Air, inevitably I went with the Pro as I needed a little more cooling than I would get with the Air. The additional fact that there was the issue with the SSD's that are being presented, it made me go the direction of the Pro.
