2016 Scion iA Review and Road Test - In 4K!

  • The Scion iA is essentially the sedan version of the all-new Mazda2 hatchback, which we won't be getting in the USA. For some reason the new 2 is being sold in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico but the only version we can get our hands on is the Scion sedan. To help differentiate the iA from any future Mazda2 sales in the USA, the front end gets an enormous trapezoidal front grille and some “Angry Birds” headlamps. Out back, the Scion’s rear is less disguised with a strong Mazda influence in the tail lamps blended with a hint of Camry.

    I'm one week with this car. I'm getting 40.1 mpg with the fantastic automatic without even trying to be economical. This is one heck of a car for the price. Good handling, brakes, decent power and comfy, hard to beat. good review.

      Thanks for this comment. Looking around for a potential first car (at 20 years old, no less). I was hoping to go full electric, but due to the pricing that is far above what the average person can afford, and the lack of charging stations and such, I think a fuel efficient car would be my best bet for now. This car seems to be the best one in terms of pricing for what you get, and fuel efficiency. Would you say that's a fair statement to make?

    I drove the iA today. I was impressed. It handled well, it felt well made, Very high quality interior. Standard touch screen, standard accident collision avoidance system using radar, all for $16,500! It is small but it is so much nicer than the Fit! It has Mazda sportiness and efficiency. It gets 5mpg more than Fit on highway! And no boring CVT!

    I bought a red one as a 2019 Yaris. Sporty, reliable, comfortable, fun! It's a great little car that should roll for ten years. I love the Mazda lines. It's pretty quiet and smooth, but it revs nice. 106 hp but only 2400 lb- it isn't slow, especially in city driving. I really love this car!

    I have one exactly the same, been great so far, only down side is this is basically a two person car, very very limited leg room in the back seat. I'm six ft tall, driver seat all the way back, leaves like 5 inches in the back seat for leg room, which is basically impossible for anyone to sit in the back seat.

When finished, got into my car and the Head Unit wasn't working- no warning. Toyota staff refusing to fix it saying Head Unit can break at any time. Toyota Manufacturer Headquarters also confirming this saying Head Unit can break at any time. Now I have no clock, IB port not working, unable to see or change radio station and reverse camera is faulty.

    Alex, do you think I am realistic buying this with 2 kids, one 3 that is soon in a Booster.. and an infant on the way? I like it. I like the features a lot. The MPGs are what I am seeking as well. I am also considering a base model Kia Soul with manual or automatic. It will have less features than this car, losing the back up camera and Navi, etc.
    But the Soul has all the space and equal to better crash tests scores with longer warranty. Plenty of storage. The MPGs are lower than I like.

    I just test drove this car (Toyota Yaris iA). Overall it was a pleasant experience. However, for my liking, this vehicle was a bit too small and a bit too slow. Mazda3 2.0L manual hatchback (which I also drove on the same day) seemed about right in terms of power, size, and cargo room.

    In Puerto Rico these are sold as the 2016 Yaris Sedan. Being a 2015 Mazda3 owner I don't know how I feel about this car. Feel as if Toyota is being a copycat with it even though it was a joint product.

    • @Lucky8s
      @Lucky8s 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the Ford Fiesta competes with this car, so it's quite reasonable to compare the two. As with all Fords, they're not on par with Toyota/Scions reliability, but the driving experience in their vehicles is miles ahead. The Ford Fiesta is super fun to drive, especially if you get the ST trim.

    This car should be compared to the Mitsubishi Mirage. I tested both and found that I am too old for the Mazda. I don't want a sharp car anymore. Just cheap, reliable, economic, practical and comfy transportation. A machine that does its job without complaining, everywhere, all the time, for many years to come. So, I got the Mirage hatchback with CVT and did not regret it (yet). But.... I think if I had been 15 years younger, I would have chosen the Mazda.

    This has no optical slot for CDs and MP3 discs, so all the songs have to be stored in a portable MP3 player or smartphone. Surprisingly, there are redesigned cars that still offer the optical slot for CDs and MP3 discs, such as the 2016 Nissan Maxima and 2016 Kia Sorento.

    Test drove this car-it felt loose, and Mazdaey in both the bad and good ways. Did not like the braking and felt the interior was cramped, but I am tall. Still the body of the car felt too narrow for my tastes. Fun to drive unless you are on a long trip, like I said see above. This is not a smooth ride. To that end, the Manhattan Lincoln's that tooled us around on our visit have me drooling. If there is any other reason why Mazda won't bring this new 2 version to the USA could be because it doesn't come close to the excellent handling and feel of the last generation, not only that the price of the older car was fantastic, the old car only weighed in at about 2100 lbs.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      watershed44 The main reason is the sales numbers on the last generation Mazda2, they said they were too low.

    • @watershed44
      @watershed44 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos It's not surprising they were low in the USA, Mazda USA unlike other markets didn't market the car AT ALL. No national TV or media ads and no local TV ads I can think of, of course that is typical of US divisions, only interested in promoting the models with the highest margins.

      @icoombs73 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      watershed44 Mazda sells much better in Canada than it does in the USA. In Canada we like small cars and Mazda makes really good ones. We also get the Nissan Micra which is a lot cheaper than this ($10 000 CDN) new. It also has a better engine, but is has minimal options.

    It sounds disappointing for fuel economy. I drove a new Kia Rio and got 38 MPG city, 44 MPG on the freeway at 60 mph. Would you chose a Kia Rio for less $ without power windows and locks? Under 12 grand? I think I would. How about fitting kid's car seats?

      djkenny you have to remember, he said in the review that he did not get to drive the Scion as a commute vehicle or on the highway. He only drove it in the mountain areas so the mpg's he stated were souly based on hill/mountain driving.

    Hi...Any idea, outside of economics, as to why Toyota doesn't offer a sunroof option with the new Scion iA? I find that to be bad, sad, omission withthis new machine. One could go aftermarket with having a power sunroof installed, but I don't want to void the iA's warranty in any way. Whatcha think? Peace...AladdinSaneNYC :^)~

      Alex on Autos Wotta pity: no sunroof option. 😢 I guess going aftermarket with a power roof isn't cool then. 😂 Again, wotta pity. The Ford Fiesta looks to be nice, but Consumer Reports rates its auto trans as being very bad, plus Ford doesn't offer any free 2 year maintenance plan with their vehicles. A minus, speaking for myself. Great review, though. I'm also a subscriber to your YT channel Peace...AladdinSaneNYC... 🌠

    Alex on Autos this Scion iA is obviously smaller because like you said it was based from the Mazda 2 which is also smaller than a Corolla or a Yaris, this pisses me off, I'm sorry but your comparison on this versus corolla/ yaris is unfair and seems that you have an extereme disgust of Scion products which I rather you don't review any of its products since you seem to hate it. Don't confuse me for a Scion fanboy but man, this is not a fair comparison. I dont live in the USA, but where I'm from the Mazda 2 competes with the Mirage and similar cars of that segment

    Is this the beginning of the GM-ification of Toyota when they can no longer bother to even build their own cars? Toyota could not sell the Yaris sedan so they withdrew it from the market a couple of years back. How is Scion supposed to sell this subcompact sedan? My money says the new iM will be a lot more durable and useful in the long term for not much more money. If you are going to buy a Scion then buy one made by Toyota.
