Sci-Fi Classic Review: LOGAN'S RUN (1976)

  • Logan's Run brought science-fiction cinema out of its early seventies funk and paved the way for Star Wars and the boom that followed it. It may have aged poorly, but it remains one of the most important and influential sci-fi classics of all time.
If you're looking for a "review" in the traditional sense, then let me just say I love this movie. This video, however, is a "review" in the literal sense (using the Miriam-Webster definition "a retrospective view or survey"), in that I'm going over the history of the film and its place in sci-fi cinema history.

I loved it. My grandfather took me to see it when I was 10 (55 now), my first syfy film. while I was a Star Trek and Lost in Space fan, I really became a true science fiction fan after Logan's Run, and started reading syfy novels. Good memories for me.

Logan's Run for me is the most 70's sci fi movie of all: style, acting, story... it just scream the times it was made in.
Still waiting for a good blu ray release that has some decent extras on.

Jenny Agutter was in Walkabout (1971), The Railway Children (1968, 1970, and 2022) before Logan's Run, and also An American Werewolf in London (1981) following it. She's an actress who always brings more to whatever role she plays.

There is a leftover from the book. Logan warned the leader of the Cubs that his time was running out. After his teens, the band would force him to leave or kill him...at age 20. That ran counter to the "Carousel at age 31" line heard through the movie. I eventually found the book and wondered why they didn't follow that storyline, since it was more interesting. Nevertheless, it's a great SF movie with an intriguing tale to tell.;)

Ah... The age old quandary... Who was more age inappropriate for their role: Michael York in this film or Stockyard Channing in Grease...?
I loved this film as a kid. As an adult its flaws are more obvious but at least it still warms my heart to think that 70s hairstyles can't be stopped by something as insignificant as an apocalypse...

If I were building an arcology for the exclusive use of people under 30 (21 in the novel) I think it would look pretty much exactly like 1976's Logan's Run. A lot of it was shot in malls specifically built to make people feel relaxed and spend their money. I think the "cheesiness" feeds in to the moral of the film: some day, kid, you will look back on yourself now and shake your head. I think it's one of the few films with that message.

I give the film much more credit. However, you did a great review. It's an Arcology film that differs from the rest. It's a good movie that can be interpreted different ways. I saw this film in Beta back in the very early 80's as a kid (loved the hit of nude moments back then lol). Geeze, I'm old. But I say it's a must watch film. No where near as important as 'High Noon' but more important than most movies today as an insight as to how society could be. Thanks for sharing this. :)

Jenny Agutter had done The Railway Children twice. On television and then a movie version. The movie became a national treasure in Great Britain. In fact a sequel to come out soon has Agutter playing an older version of Bobby. So as far as being known Agutter was certainly known in Britain. In an interview Agutter said the director knew of her but thought of her as a juvenile. When she showed up to see him he was suprised how grownup she was.

I never understood why the city's computer couldn't process the fact that sanctuary didn't exist. I assume there is a logical explanation, but the film deals with this in a very confused way that hurts my head to try to figure out. The computer knows no one has achieved renewal through Carousel. So why is the non-existence of Sanctuary a fundamental problem for it?! Jenny Agutter in this movie was one of my first adolescent crushes. York is a fine actor and I can see William Devane as Francis.

    • @TheUnapologeticGeek
      @TheUnapologeticGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. The ending doesn't really make sense, and I have yet to hear anybody offer a good explanation for why the computer flips out or why the city just up and explodes because the computer gets confused.

The Unapologetic Geek I heard somewhere(can’t remember where) that it was a simple matter of someone, probably a studio head, wanting a big explosive ending. What I don’t get,and I realize I’m probably in the minority here,is what the three revolving heads of Michael York or those things behind the heads with the colored dots have to do with anything.I know I didn’t describe what I’m talking about very well, but I did so to the best of my ability.

Any epistemically closed dystopia based on algorithms is going to encounter an anomaly that brings on a general fault protection error. Several Star Trek episodes of the era made use of that trick.
It's also possible that the computer got caught in a Hofstadter-Möbius loop (a term from the 2001 environment) in which it was programmed to tell humans that the ankh was the key to sanctuary when it knew the key opened up the cold storage plant where the unaccounted for runners went.
In the 2001 movie, the first clue that HAL 9000 is about to have a psychotic episode is when it brings up the rumors of something being dug up on the moon. It's a bit more dramatic, though, to have the general fault protection error crash the tyranny. Captain Kirk would have understood.

I never saw this film until 2016 when it was 40 years old. It feels weird watching it knowing that Star Wars came out the following year cause it feels cheap and very 1960s Star Trek in comparison. Clearly one of, if not, the last Sci-fi movie made before the genre was taken seriously by studios and audiences from what Star Wars, Close Encounters and Blade Runner achieved.

I think what gets me about Logan's Run is the cheapness of it all. Apparently big money was spent on the sets and all to be this 'open protected domed city' - yet feels more claustrophobic inside than Lucas's THX-1138. And to have spent a lot of money to have York's Holographic Image during interrogation - but then that horribly cheap ice robot...? The production design just contradicts itself throughout. I think it's a good story still, but in DEFINITE need of a well crafted reboot! And I think this is where MGM finally threw in the towel and said 'to heck with any more science fiction!' In the hands of Chris Nolan, or Terrance Mallik, or Bong Joon Ho today....?

So Millennium is a guilty pleasure for you... Me too! In so many ways that movie was a disappointment (largely because of casting). But John Varley's book is a favourite that I regularly reread, it is such a good time travel story.
So I find myself occasionally returning to the movie. Perhaps I keep hoping that it might be better than I remembered. I am like Pete the cat in Heinlein's The Door Into Summer, who seems determined that not every door in the house can have winter outside. Seriously, Millennium is a classic story that cries out for a remake. But instead, Hollywood persists with interminable 'reboots' of perfectly adequate stuff. How about covering Millennium soon...or have you already done it?
