I never thought this movie was a “piece of garbage”, I always enjoyed it very much. Of course it has it’s faults and if someone is not familiar with the story the assessment might be different, but I am familiar and I have my opinion! Thank you for your review and the information regarding the development of the movie.

Lynch's version of DUNE is such a anomaly (and yes I am aware of the other versions) but his is such a abstract and bizarre rendering by a major studio.
For all its many faults it is still worthwhile and many elements are superb production design, costume design and sound are all brilliant.
Faults though are in its storytelling (this maybe due to studio interference) & the questionable multiple voice overs.
Its merits far outweigh it's faults though and even though the Villeneuve version is looking towards been definitive version DUNE (84);should not be dismissed as a turkey or waste of time.
    Great review

I know this is an older video, but I just discovered this channel a few weeks ago and I need to comment on this one. I loved this movie ever since I saw it in the theater in 1984. Only movie I ever went to where you got a pamphlet that explained the back story. Since I like to read I considered this a plus, but I am sure to most people the concept of reading something in a movie theater was incomprehensible. Critics generally hate scifi, and I'm sure the religious aspect probably didn't help. Anyway, been liking all your reviews, and please keep making them.

As you say, there are moments in this film that I can never forget. I do wish the Princess had more, she’s so important in later narratives. Another problem is the Herbert’s central idea is to distrust heroes while Hollywood , especially in SF and Fan films, continues to put forth traditional heroes.

While the new Dune is solid, this original has a special place. It's pretty much what you'd expect, Dune told in an incredibly visual and arthouse style. And it has some incredible moments there.

11 year old me seeing it in the theater in 1984 was thoroughly confused - the tech seemed really backwards, no computers, etc. The Irulan prologue just didn't give enough backstory to understand the world we were being thrown into. In fact, I remember the theater handing out "cheat sheets" with a glossary of terms just to try to bring people up to speed faster.
As I saw it again in reruns on TV later in life, it very much held my interest and I will ALWAYS consider this THE DUNE movie... The Sci-Fi channel's miniseries was a low-budget crapshoot IMO. The new one has potential, but I will always compare it back to the old one, and I just do not like their choice of Timothy Chamolet as Paul... He just doesn't have enough screen presence, with too feminine features to come across as the "supreme being" / "mesiah" character Paul is supposed to be.

I did enjoy Dune as well. As a kid it was kind of a boring slog for me, but after rewatching it once I got older (and after finally having read the novel inbetween), I really appreciated it for its look and ambition. It's certainly not perfect, but imho quite a good adaptation considering the running time.

I do love this movie, I re-watch my DVD about once a year. I first read the novel when the movie was announced, way-back-when. It's flawed and odd, but it's also unique, visually stunning, and the cast is amazing.
My little brother and I were reading new comic books in like 1986, and the letters page of a DC "Star Trek" comic announced that Patrick Stewart was going to be the captain in the new TNG series. "Patrick Stewart!" I exclaimed to my brother - "Gurney from "Dune", and from "Excalibur"! This is going to be great!"

I do believe that dune is a good movie and more faithful to the spirit of the book than any other adaptation so far. But it's definitely flawed and would be, I think, flawed even if David Lynch had actually completed it. But I can gloss over the silly "sound weapons" and the concept of space folding is cool. Better than the horrendous actors and deplorable visuals of the TV mini-series. And better than castrating the Fremen by making their planetary leader Lyet-Kynes into a woman just for brownie SJW points (no, I have zero hopes for the upcoming Villeneuve Dune. Like almost everything these days, it will be woke garbage).

  • @JohnWilliamNowak

When it first came out, I rather liked it and could never understand how people couldn't follow the plot. I don't think I'd put it on my "Must See" short list, but it certainly isn't a bad film. I'[d call it more of a darned good try that failed to knock it out of the park.
The only incomprehensible thing about this film is that people tried to adapt it into a single film instead of two or three.

I have always really enjoyed this one. The new one is pretty awesome so far, but I will always have a place for this. Also, though the new movie's score is good, I just don't find it quite as iconic or impressive as this one. This score is likely a big part of why I am such a big fan, along with the quality and skill of the cast. The new cast is good... but I feel much of Hollywood has lost the versatility and presence the actors of yesteryear exhibited. When you couldn't be sure of your effects, you leaned on the skill of the actor to sell it. Now, they rely on effects, and many (not all) actors have gotten a bit lazy... just my opinion.

Lynch's film is a great case of what could have been. The production design, costumes, soundtrack and overall look of the movie are fantastic and no one could mistake it for anything other than a David Lynch film. However, although it captures the world of Dune it fails to tell the story of Dune. Despite the film being eventually butchered by the studio I don't think we would ever have gotten that story even if Lynch had been given final cut. Ultimately I think Lynch was enamoured with the world and it's cast of characters but wasn't overly invested in the drama, complex thematics, narrative heft and minutiae of Herbert's novel. Hopefully Villeneuve's take will rectify this and we'll get a Dune which not only looks and sounds great but is able to fully articulate all the novels interlocking narrative threads.

What is the point of judging films based upon their MONETARY output on day one release?
    HELLO?
POP Music is GARBAGE. AAA Games like Avengers, Madden, & COD are GARBAGE! Yes.. they make money. But their longevity is NIL.
DUNE is still the world's most articulate grand masterpiece to date. It still ignites the imagination of millions. It shall never be dethroned.
In 1963, work begun to create the world's first ever 100% electronically created piece of music for a new cheap & laughable show named "Dr Who". Delia Derbyshire & Dick Mills had been sacrificed like David Lynch to create the impossible. Delia died a nobody, gained no royalties, & wasn't ever given credit for her masterpiece. But it still sounds futuristic today.
I refuse to review this title in a way that only appeases philistines & critics behind a desk. It's one of the most remarkable projects humanity has ever achieved.

This movie is the embodiment of too many chefs in the kitchen. And many of those chefs clearly have no idea how the oven works.

And he just couldn't leave out the gross out scenes, could he? No wonder Frank Herbert died young. Shame on David Lynch. I'll never watch another of his movies. As for the much ballyhooed Villeneuve movie, it was almost just as bad. Everyone was clapping at the end. Why? Am I the only one who read the book? I will not see the sequel.

Dune was a great series of books. TV films and movies are no where near their greatness. At the time I had a screenplay involving a male stripper who goes on to become a trans woman on a quest for revenge against the America CIA agent who destroyed the stripper's male life. Kyle was our first choice to play Travis (the stripper) but he took Dune instead. To this day Eagle in Exile remains unmade because I have yet to see another actor who could play the role. Kyle was good in this film, but sadly he was poorly directed and some of his best work remains other films.

Hey I ad similar experience when Dune came on tv when I was a child, I was mesmerised by a lot of the impressive character designs, costumes, that strange creature living inside the huge mobile fish tank and of course, Sting ... I thought its one of the most epic movies I've ever seen but then I was only a child who would later grow up to see the many flaws in the movie ... its strange how we see things as a child compared to adulthood, the movie looked visually very atmospheric as a child but now looking at it, it had very flat uninteresting lightings which is in my opinion the biggest flaw of the whole movie ... but I would still say most of the art direction is really great and wonderful, maybe a few awkward choices (the inclusion of WWII army general costumes for the emperor frankly looks very out of place and silly among all the great strange looking people around him) ... I'm disappointed when I got to see it again as an adult, a lot of the great art directions were sadly wasted by flat lightings and unimaginative camera works ...

I wish this video was more heavy on the "review" aspect and less on documenting the background of it's production.
That being said, I think 1984's DUNE is an absolute trash heap of a movie; it's horrendous on all fronts and torture to watch. It's no wonder this movie scared me as a kid.
