Electronic Arts has handled the Star Wars license terribly. They've screwed things up in ways that are embarrassing to watch.
Having only squirted out two Star Wars Battlefront games and made a mess of both, EA deserves to lose its exclusive hold over Star Wars games. EA also just deserves to lose in general.

I guess the worst part about all this...is that LucasArts died for this.
Granted, their output became increasingly 'eh' as time wore on, and their closure was kinda to be expected, but the fact that we lost the guys who developed some of the best licenced games in the 90s and 2000s. LucasArts made San Francisco an American home for game development; when you have companies like Double Fine and Telltale open up shop nearby, it shows that there's something good going on. Hell, Double Fine in recent years have taken to remastering some of the old adventure games, because LucasArts' legacy is an important one.
It's important to show how significant LucasArts was on the games industry in the time they existed, and to show their handling of the Star Wars licence when the films were the hot topic of public interest...and it's important to compare to how EA have been handling it for most of this decade. Two games for the extent at which the films have been resurgent is simply pathetic. I would sooner see Disney open up its own game studio, purely to flip the bird at EA and run it over their face, simply because EA have proven themselves irresponsible, disrespectful, and apathetic towards Star Wars as a franchise.

I had actually forgotten EA had Bioware under its belt and could tap into them to make a new Kotor.
Though sadly, I am not entirely sure Bioware is up to the task anymore what with Andromeda’s failure and their shift to more action focused games than rpgs...
Still. Would love it if we could get a new Kotor. Or a battlefront that was actually like the old battlefront games. (Still in shock they managed to screw that up)

    • @theroundduckman
      @theroundduckman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@sorenkazaren4659 The thing with Andromeda was that it was developed by another studio from "classic" Edmonton Bioware. That studio that made Andromeda were the ones that helped with DLC and multiplayer in Mass Effect 3, not the developers of its main bits like Edmonton Bioware. It's the same shit EA pulled off with Maxis, using the studio name as a brand rather than a strict group of people.
And yeah, quite a bit shocked in retrospect when it comes to Battlefront. What's funny is that BFV is a lot like an old Battlefront, as well as pretty much any Battlefield game for that matter, even Battlefield 1. BFV in particular due to the return of limited health and depots for health and ammo. Why couldn't they just make a Battlefield-y Battlefront rather than some casual jack off mess? Why not have tons of vehicles to hop into rather than as a unit (Battlefront 2 EA) or a fucking power up!? (Battlefront EA 1)

EA’s process with developers from the outside looking in:
    1. Buy up hot developer
    2. Have them make a game in the current money spinning genre or, if they have an established series, shift it towards that genre - regardless of their experience in said genre
    3. Set high to ludicrous expectations for sales, either for the game or for an intended series of them
    4. Shovel in micro transactions/loot boxes/insert money maker here
    5. State that game has not met expectations, cancel support and/or series, move developer on to next hot property
    6. Rinse and repeat 2 to 5 a few times
    7. Shut down studio citing failure to meet expectations.

War Tome Your pretentiousness is showing again, while it’s true that consumers can’t tell a publisher how exactly to make their games, and doing so in the past has occasionally led to gigantic fuck ups, what with “if you try to please everyone, you will please no one.” However, to imply that we shouldn’t be upset as to what is offered is a load of bullshit, we have every right to get angry with a product that fails to even come close to our expectations. This wouldn’t even be an issue if we had competing releases for these Star Wars games, as it stands, EA has us as a captive audience, and complete control of an IP that has been beloved for generations. All of this because they have EXCLUSIVE rights to the IP in their industry, that being video games. Strictly speaking since capitalism is all about competition, and these guys have exclusive control of a mega IP in their industry, and therefore have no competition, even if they did they are so arrogant that they likely wouldn’t even consider the threat of a substitute product, the issue is mate, companies like this are harmful for their respective industry, and we don’t want a beloved mega IP in their hands. Now, if it’s true that Disney is approving these things, which given their historic mishandling of the movies wouldn’t be all too surprising, then maybe they shouldn’t have rights to it either, unfortunately with Disney though, even if they do terribly with it, they are the rights holders, so that wouldn’t change unless they sold the IP. TL,DR it’s not a matter of demanding what we get you pretentious know it all, we want it out of the hands of clearly unqualified people, who are doing more damage than good because of their EXCLUSIVE CONTROL OF THE IP. If what box says is true, then this mess is corporatism embodied.

Games Workshop is killing it right now, it's like a new golden age for them. They're cranking out quality specialty games, their miniatures are top-notch, getting into the hobby is cheaper and easier than ever. Their video game tie-ins like Vermintide, Battlefleet Gothic, and Total War: Warhammer are bringing in tons of new players. Their community management team is on point, with Warhammer Community and other modes of communication running at full steam ahead. I've already heard people mention that they're already becoming the gold standard for a company turning their fortune around, it was just a few years ago that they were losing money every year and were pretty much vilified by their player base and now they're making more money than ever. Video game companies like EA and Ubisoft could learn from them, they gave their fans what they wanted (moved story forward for 40k, cheaper mini bundles, more community engagement, etc.) and stopped fucking everyone over for short term gains.

Copyright law was never designed to last past a dozen years or so, because that's the general estimate of when a creator can reasonably make money off something.
And I'd still call it a death of public domain, because if corporations can get a 90 year head start on owning and monetizing property, it sorta devalues the entire system and it's point. Like, sure. With ongoing series that are getting entries every 1-3 years and are worked on consistently, I can understand the want to keep that property in check. What I can't stomach is companies sitting on franchises they haven't touched for decades, yet still feel entitled to cry when someone attempts to do something with em'.

Disney is the biggest problem with Star Wars atm. And precisely for this reason, it will never allow multiple companies to have the rights to its IPs. Even if the license was given to a halfway decent publisher (not good, the good ones are all either Japanese or too poor to buy the license) we would only get certain genres of games. Take-Two could have Rockstar make a great open world Star Wars game ala RDR, but there would be no chance of an RPG. Bethesda could produce FPS games like Doom or stealth games like Dishonored (or maybe even an RPG if Bethesda Game Studios got its shit together) but there would be no strategy games like Total War: Warhammer. The only way we would see a variety of Star Wars games is if Disney gave the license to multiple different producers, and given how zealously overprotective they are with their IPs that isn't going to happen

If you think about it makes sense that Disney gave the Star Wars brand to EA (2013). How many publishers have developers as diverse as EA? EA (2013) had Visceral Games which are more than capable of making single player games, DICE Studios which are know for making FPS games,Bioware which are know for making RPGs,Black Box know for making racing games (and Skate),etc. A Star Wars game made by those developers would have been amazing and it pretty much covers almost all gaming genre. But then Disney's lawyers pulled the plug on them because a couple of guys doing this project part time on their own budget were more competent then the people with an army of game studios and billions of dollars in resources. RIP Apeiron.
Sure, it's Disney's IP (Those words even hurt to say) so Disney makes the final call. But I kinda feel like THOSE are the sorts of developers Disney should have making their games. People who give two fucks about the Star Wars franchise, and are inspired to build on its greatness instead of milking its popularity.
In fact, if all Disney wanted to do was milk its popularity, they might as well axe EA and just get a bunch of different studios to churn out a bunch of different games so there's always a new game on the market every quarter. At least then there would be some variety.

@@Crazyfistish We have to keep in mind that today games are twice as expensive as they were for example when Jedi Knight series were released. Market also is different today, video games were less popular during the time when for example KOTOR was released (and even with that in mind KOTOR copies were all sold out within few days after release, while Battlefront 2 copies litter plenty of stores to this day). And I won't start with piracy. Back then it was way more common than today, when installing a pirated game is way more tricky than just using crack on it.
And even with that in mind Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (which isn't top notch Star Wars game to begin with) - linear and short game was sold in 7 milion copies being "just" 2 milion after Battlefront 2. With no returns and controversy. I'd say Star Wars franchise had way better performance without EA. Keep in mind all the old Star Wars games had smaller budget than Battlefront 2. And that goes without marketing or damage control after controversy began.
As for loot boxes... EA disabled them fast. I would not expect much money to come from them after game's release because of that.

    • @darkrite9000
      @darkrite9000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Sejten11 Yeah new games are more expensive, though most of that money goes to art assets. Game mechanics are a fairly decent expenditure, as unlike art assets most of it is coding and then tinkering said art assets. Voice acting and sound design varies wildly depending on the game, some are great with a lot of cost, some are bad with very minimal cost, and then we got all the various mix ups (high cost, bad VA and sound, low cost, good VA and sound, etc). So then that leaves story to be one of the cheapest costs for a game, even if you're spending a fair bit on various writers it's not as much as art assets (unless you forgo making really high quality art assets). That being said, considering increase in overall expenditures and then increase in sales due primarily to popularity of the game industry. I think it's safe to assume that they have similar profit from these crappy new games, as the old good Star Wars games had.
The thing they fail to realize is that if they made a good game, especially a single player one, then not only would it sell really well right now. It would boost their popularity a fair bit, and with high popularity and trust, you can sell more games. Rather than having people who refuse to buy a game you make because you made it. So if EA actually had a brain to think with, than they'd realize that all those games they cancelled are just costing them more money. Cause they had a budget, and that budget was used during the creation of those cancelled games. They don't get that money back, sure they cut the costs a bit from closing down game studios, but they're not making a profit. If those games had come out, then they could've expected to at least get their money back since many people wanted new single player games. But greed and stupidity rule this big publishers, and it's one of the biggest reasons for the decline in video games, despite the growing industry.
Basically I just think that EA needs to either grow a brain (cause honestly I really want Anthem to be a good game, I like Bioware, even despite some recent issues), or lose the Star Wars rights. Cause they suck at making Star Wars games, and it's bad cause on looks alone (which is what most of the money went to) the games look great, the graphics are really good, but the games are really shit. Hell as bad as Fallout 76 is (and the main reason for that being because the branch studio in charge of most of it's development had little experience with the engine, cause they used to be a different game studio entirely), for the rest of the games, which are buggy, but some bugs are left in due to players actually wanting them (such as skyrim's space program via giants). I've not really felt that Bethesda was trying to milk money from it's players by ripping them off (the creation club was however a bit ridiculous, though given how it ultimately is pointless on Xbox and PC, leaving the only reason for it's existence to be so PS4 players can actually have some mods to skirt Sony's mod policy). I feel that Bethesda after 76 would probably try to avoid something that catastrophic. So long as the new engine they're making isn't haphazardly thrown together like the previous one (reason for that being due to them being rushed to make it, and this was to release Morrowind). So yeah, hoping that things change for the better, though if I'm being entirely honest, at least as far as EA is concerned, I have very little hope. And I'm done ranting.

Compare this output from the Star Wars license to the recent output of Warhammer games. It's night and day. Games Workshop opened up the Warhammer IP and we've had smash hit after smash hit bringing in the exposure and money. The games that don't work out end up being mobile cashgrabs that no-one cares about while Total War and Vermintide are market leaders in their genres and are arguably generating more interest than the tabletop game and theres a dozen other smaller success stories for the IP.
Open up the Star Wars license and every damn developer would have amazing ideas for it and Disney could have the same kinds of successes. Instead its been wasted on low-effort disappointments. Its so depressing to imagine the possibilities of what we could be seeing from this universe.

Truly, i think SWTOR is the real KOTOR 3. It`s the only thing after the Disney deal, which still delivers material for the old Extended Universe plotline. This is something very special.
Nowdays i`ts more like a single player RPG. You can play through the rich and very good story content without any grinding and you can completely ignore all the multiplayer stuff if you`re not interested in it (but i have to say it`s really great to coop the game with a friend). Also, it gives you the opportunity to play roles as an Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter, Smuggler or Republic Trooper - things we`d never see in a real KOTOR game. In addition the original KOTOR author Drew Karpyshyn ist now working on the plot.
Just in December last year new content was released. And an even bigger DLC is announced for 2019. So EA does something with the SW licence. But it should really not hold the exclusive rights for it.
Here`s a good video for everyone interested in the actual state of SWTOR th-cam.com/video/wJnUutuS23c/w-d-xo.html

@@MrHeinrichMueller I liked SWTOR, I haven't played it in a while (been caught up in other things), but I thought that for an MMORPG, it had a pretty damn good story, and feel. Knowing that SWTOR is a lot like KOTOR but more open is why I like it as much as I do. I am really into solo games, even for games like Warframe, I generally play alone, only teaming up with others if I have to or if it was something me and friends wanted to do. So the fact that I don't need to worry much about multiplayer for SWTOR is a big deal.

Say what you will about Activision - and believe me, I have - but at least noted Captain Planet villain Bobby Kotick runs a tight ship and seems to be smart about what he's doing even if it is completely evil.
EA's incompetence seems like they're trying to one up Konami. They've fucked up what is essentially a license to print money. EA could have slapped Obi-Wan Kenobi's face on Atari's Maze Craze, called it Escape from the Death Star, and it would have still made money.

EA's method of killing studios is by growing them way faster than their management can effectively handle. Ironically, the same seems to be happening to EA itself. It's grown so big the board just doesn't know what it should be doing with the available assets (or likely can even keep track of said assets.)
It's still sad to think that EA started out as real pioneers in the gaming industry and now they're a shambling monstrosity just running over everything in its path.

I mostly wanted Andromeda to be a good replacement for 3's multiplayer, and it was even made by the team who had made 3's multiplayer, but they just didn't get it.
On the other hand, I understand the technical issues the rest if the game faced. It was "in development" for years, but most of that was working with the Inquisition team to even get Frostbite working as anything but a shooter engine, and what little progress was made on the actual game was thrown out twice.
Andromeda, as it launched, was made in 13 months. Unlike when Obsidian put out rushed games, kotor 2 and neverwinter nights 2, Bioware Austin wasn't given the time to actually fix much before the game was abandonee. And, at least from a multiplayer perspective, the few changes they did make actively made the experience worse. Game launches with only 2 good guns, so most people were running melee builds. Only balance patch nerfed melee and those two guns, instead of buffing anything else.

I don't know why I never hear anybody saying anything about the lootboxes (randomized card packs) in PVZ Garden Warfare 2. This is a game that is clearly marketed towards children, even more so than Battlefront, with gambling mechanics, and published by EA. Unlocking certain characters through randomized card packs definitely gives a measurable advantage. Yes, they give you the option of buying a BASE set of characters through a character specific card packs which unlocks 1 whole character at 40,000 coins, but this does not include all the unlockable characters. These excluded characters are divided into 2 halves and you need both halves to unlock the character. They can be obtained through various methods. Some through a boring, time consuming, and difficult mode called infinity time. Some through additional randomized packs which contain both cosmetics and character pieces. (Your chances of getting character pieces through these packs is very small btw.) Some you can purchase through a vendor named Rux who will sell a specific character piece at 1,000,000 coins. What Rux offers varies from player to player, his inventory changes twice weekly, and it does not always contain a character piece.
    Coin prices are:
    56,000 = $2.49
    120,000 = $4.99
    280,000 = $9.99
    630,000 = $19.99
    1,500,000 = $44.99
    2,500,000 = $64.99
Or you can earn coins through gameplay at about 100,000 coins equating to 1-1.5 hrs of gameplay.
Personally, I have never purchased a single coin from EA. This game gave the option of importing your characters from Garden Warfare 1, which I did, so I started this game with half of the characters already unlocked. I have been playing it since it's release nearly 3 years ago and clocked an average of 250hrs per year. All this said, I finally unlocked the last character 1 MONTH ago.
I feel like more people should be talking about this game. EA still supports it. They even unlocked a new game mode a month or 2 ago. THIS is the EA game marketed to young children with gambling mechanics. Forget Battlefront.

Hire a team to work with publishers and developers and carefully choose winning projects while controlling your licenses. Get a Kevin Feige but for video games instead of Marvel movies. Either they knew what a colossal bunch of skeleton warriors EA were, or the decision was made by some suits who have no idea what the game industry is like. Either way, it's clear that what Disney's looking to get out of this deal is endless trunks of cash, not quality video games.

    • @sebastiankrant2738
      @sebastiankrant2738 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Most likely EA just had the best conditions. While its fun to assume that companies are run by guys that have no understanding of their property while the fans of course have and while there is some truth to the fact that job competence suffers to much compared to managment competence in higher levels (though of course the latter does become more important), Disney didnt became the multimedia giant just because Walt Disney did some great movies. And they most likely did calculate the risk. Not saying it paid of for them, but they probably assumed something like what happened could happen, but was worth the risk given the gain EA provided. In a simpliefied manner: If a more focussed studio or spreading it out towards more studios would have made 50 % more money, but they would have gotten 51 % less, EA still was a good deal.

It is almost certainly the latter. I don’t have a link on hand, but Disney has stated that the gaming industry is outside their realm of expertise and that they would rather not risk expending the huge amount of resources needed to not only get a foot in the door but catch up with everyone else. This is why they decided to let gaming studios which already exist make Star Wars games - they probably saw that EA was able to make games that brought in a lot of mo why and left it at that.

Basically what we want is simple, well told storytelling that merges the old with the new... the point isn't too look to now... to look with whats on trend but to MAKE trends... That's what Star Wars did. It made a massive multi-billion dollar IP using simple story telling, with a compelling manner. The fucking MMORPG looks like a fucking masterpiece by contrast to the empty headed bullshit EA has produced and will most likely continue to produce... mostly due to the fact they don't fucking care. They don't. They want to squeeze money out of fans pockets. And while I was one of maybe five people who didn't hate their bad Battlefront games (though I am not stupid enough to say I liked it...), I also realize that they are creatively as bankrupt as the businesses they torpedo with their nonsensical bullshit.
They don't. Want. To make games. Jim. They want to make a vacuum for wallet that sends you cash to their back account... and they'll do everything but actually make a product that does that to see it done. Kotor 3 you say? Fuck this shit. I'd throw all my cash at it. NOPE! That might show signs we have ideas. ANOTHER SHIT BATTLEFRONT!?!?! Don't worry it's on its way after we sell that crap we're pushing on the side...

Obsidian can, on a crowdfunded budget, whip out quality that BioWare/EA can't compete with. Hell, EA tosses millions of dollars at Star Wars yet can't even get out the gate.
I cannot wait to see if Microsoft actually allows Obsidian creative freedom with unlimited budgets. Ya know, what EA was supposed to do with studios producing Star Wars games.

I remember being very interested in Anthem when I first heard of it, and then just losing all my interest when I discovered that it was an online Destiny-style shooter. I'm wondering if EA would have received more preorders if they'd instead had Bioware take those same art assets and instead had Bioware make a single player narrative driven game about people in powered armour exploring a hostile world. Say a Bioware RPG with a massively reduced cast, just having it be the party, a handful of NPCs, and the villains.

It's not DICE's fault. The developers are obviously plenty talented (The Frostbite Engine is amazing in its efficiency and rendering repertoire). It's the publisher who gives the direction and very likely imposes harsh deadlines that the developers can't deliver on.
