    An English gentleman's finest companion during Victorian and Georgian Times, even in the early 20th Century.
    As an antiques dealer i have handled some very fine sticks and canes over the decades, some weighted, some bladed, some mounted, even in gold, all had a history and were used.
    Yep, one cannot discount the trusty walking stave as a life friend even if one does not need it to aid in walking.

      I agree. It really connects to old traditions.

    Long time, f.m.a. practitioner/instructor. In recent times, due to a heathscare, I have realigned aspects of my training to include the use of a walking staff. Rubber bottom cap. It is made of solid hickory and is first and foremost an aid to combat bouts of vertigo. I mean, as a self-defense tool.....effectiveness is an understatement. The funny thing is I have been getting over the perception due to the compliments the stick have received. Training is definitely key. Take care and great video content.

    Great video Joel. An added benefit of wooden walking sticks is they provide the health benefit of grounding.

    Agree on the Cold Steel thoughts. The only Cold Steel that I like is the City Stick. It seems very analogous to the BlackSwift Models

      @@RoarIrish I have the sword came, and the light stick. I don’t know about the city stick but the light stick broke where the ball attached. Before that, it performed beautifully.

    I've been taking cane self-defense from Master Gary Hernandez for a bit over a year now. I rate the cane as equally valuable as a handgun-depends on the situation. I live in the free state of Florida and can/do conceal carry. But an "encounter" may not be legally justified to use deadly force, even if legally justified just because you "can" use deadly force doesn't mean you "should", and the cane can give me time to draw my handgun if I need to. I can draw a gun from concealment and fire and hit a 2"x2" target from three yards in 1.5-2 seconds "most" of the time. I can whack someone with the cane with the tip on the floor in 0.5 second. For super CQC or on the ground situations I carry a Shiveworks Clinch Pick. Obviously the best defensive tool is situational awareness and don't do stupid, or hangout with stupid. I'm 79 and have done martial arts and boxing years ago. But I can't defend myself hands-on with a younger, stronger, faster, bigger bad guy. Also I can't run away. I don't need a cane to walk but it is useful as my back is fused from below the neck to the end of the spine and I can't bend down. So I will have to rely on disparity of force if I have to use a weapon or "tool" to defend myself. The walking cane is a medical device under U.S. ADA law and can be taken any where in the Country. But once you strike someone with the cane it becomes a weapon, just like using a hammer or baseball bat, and have to be justified in using it to defend yourself as though it is a weapon. Striking someone in the head, neck, throat, or spine can, perhaps likely, result in death or serious bodily injury.

    Great Video, Guro Joel! As You know we both love walking sticks! It is a perfect tool that can be in hand almost anywhere you go, I'm a bit older than you and have accepted I need my Shillelagh or Blackswift Raptor in hand! I need the support in helping with hip and back issues, but it is also a great self-protection tool in the hands of someone well trained!!!!

    It's gotten better , but I too at times need a walking stick when my back is acting up. I tend to go with more of a staff I made from a poplar tree because I can stop and put my full weight on it with both hands. The way I see it is if I can't even walk well, how could I fight if I didn't have the extra protection ? I also modded out a good old hickory axe handle I use as a cane because it's still light , but I know it won't break . But the movements are more like sword than stick. I mean it's basically a bokken . In Washington state our current RCW's are pretty much anything goes on what we can carry as long as we are threatening or brandishing . But the mods make it seem more like it's really just for walking because I figure worse case that may help in court .

    Tuning in from across the world, isn't it beyond sad that someone would actually attack a person who needs a cane to walk? What has happened to our human community where children have grown up to be wolves preying on the weak and helpless?

    • @JoelHuncar
      @JoelHuncar  15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@davetekannon it is sad, but for the most part where I live street violence is pretty rare if you are not in an at risk lifestyle. (Living rough, drug culture…etc) But life seems to be getting stranger. I like the security of having training and force multiplying options, but in the end, I hope and believe that it is likely that my training is a way to get me moving and exercising. I hope I never have to use it, but like that I have it if I am ever in the wrong place at the wrong time.

      @@JoelHuncar GGGGGGGGGGGreat to hear from you. I think you have sussed things out very well. What I know is that my instincts have got us to here and now, and I've been through situations where on the fly, I made the right move at the right time and avoided potential extinction. But we all know our fate can change in a heartbeat. I had a student who was wearing earphones and standing at the pedestrian place at the interesection waiting for the light to change and some maniac came from behind and whacked her so hard on the head that she still hasn't recovered. It's all a game of chance out there. We have to stay aware, but there are times when you relax and sometimes it's over before you can blink an eye...
