I have seen a few things about fighting with a staff and a couple of things caught my attention. if you are an old geezer like me who uses a foresting / or hiking pole as a walking stick , some of these shown defence techniques can be used effectively against street muggers with knives etc. Another thing I learnt was a sling could be fitted to a quarter staff and that would hurl a stone quite a distance with some velocity ( do not try that one in your local shopping centre).
As an old geezer myself I can relate. I've had a hiking pole for 30 years and it never crossed my mind of using it for self defense since I had other means for that. (It's a Kentucky thing).

Great instructional video! You might cover this in another video, but maneuver to get one bad guy between you and the second bad guy and keep it that way. You never want to be in the middle. Take out the nearest guy and then finish off the other. This maneuvering goes for any fight, weapons or not. Of course, escape when when there's an opening

One of the Clan leaders asked/ said "I didn't realize you needed a cane." I replied "It's more of a war club than a cane." 🙂 Too, I hike a lot in the mountains and carry a hiking stick and practice while I'm hiking...
EXCELLENT!!!! I have seen way worse choreography for fights in big budget Hollywood movies. This was fantastic, funny, and showed very real moves (not something you often get even with good choreography).
You can also harden and strengthen your staff by putting it in an oil bath for a few days, then using a combo of resin, fire and burnishing to seal it up. Commercial self defense cane companies use petrochemicals and polymers for their oil and resin options, but you can use natural vegetable oils and tree resins to the same effect if you want to keep in natural. The processing can make it durable enough to do a lot more damage without taking any, especially if you find a nice hardwood.
Because HEMA assumes 1v1, if you have multiple attackers...your back is always going to be towards them, so making getting near you as much as a hazard as possible is your best bet

Good thing they were too scared to throw down after I went hard at the closest one to me before they had a chance to flank me and catch me off guard. This guy wanted to jump me because he was dating my ex and there was bad blood there. He decided to bring 3 of his friends to jump me that day. I saw him pull up and confront me, and out of the corner of my eye I see his friends creeping up beside me, so I went full action mode (I didn’t even realize I was capable of it at the time). So his friends got a good example of how getting too close wasn’t in their best interest. In my opinion if you need to take on multiple attackers, you should try to put as many “out of the fight” as quickly as possible if given a chance. Using reasonable force is also recommended otherwise you may be more likely to face repercussions.
@@punishedwhispers1218 to add to that, ideally you also want to be moving around trying to line up your enemies (so to speak) in a way that makes them get in each other's way instead of just allowing them to surround you. Always trying to turn, let's say a 3v1, into several 1v1's

I rewatched the fight scene a few times. Really helps to see all the lessons and such flow together to be applied. I also just enjoy some good fight scene choreography
I am hooked right at the "I'm a fun guy" *WOW!* That is how I look at it. Rather talk than fight, but if needs be to fight, no predictions whatsoever. If some person aims to harm me or a friend or loved one, I aim to stop them. And what that may entail God only knows at that particular moment. But, I am a 'fun guy'.
Training with staff is so fun! I use staff for flow training and once you're grooving with it you can really sense the devastating force it can deliver. Miss one hand movement, bang your knee and you will gain a whole new respect for this weapon. ;)

I noticed some similarities between the fun-gi's wide movements and two-handed sword techniques. I assume that there was a lot of crossover between the disciplines.
Depending on the length of the stick, a lot of the movements and techniques can cross over between stick/staff and things like spear, 2 handed sword, or 1 handed sword. That's why typically people used to learn to wield a stick/staff as a weapon before ever touching a "real weapon" lol

After enduring a very creepy harassing neighbor man lately on my Woodland rambles (me in my mid sixties and he in his 70s for God's sake...when do old billy goats stop trying to climb mountains), and considering a firearm, I decided as a fencer, a staff/stick would be my most comfortable protection. That, and took a little hint from the baby skunk that sprayed my dog recently, so a small pepper spray. I love these stick videos and have learned a lot from them. So me, a Calleiach, out in the woods with my stick having some fun playing with it.
This is unrelated to the video, but I've been wondering if there was an equivalent of the shemagh worn by early Celtic peoples? It seems like a natural article of clothing given it's essentially a miniature version of the plaid that's worn as a kilt, though I don't recall hearing about anything of that sort.
Man this really takes me back to when I was a kid. Was never allowed having toy weapons to play with so me and my friends would go into the woods and hit each other with sticks 😂😂😂
This is pretty cool. Have you tried it out against similarly skilled FMA practitioners? The stick you're using looks a bit longer than a typical FMA user, but I'm pretty sure they could get along with a similar stick, and I'm curious how the two compare.
There are many Martial Arts in Europe, using a long Staff. Quarterstaff/ Great Brittain. Jago de Pau/Portugal.Jeu de ../Spain. Baton Francais- Baton Herbert/France. Bastone a dui mani- bastone Genovese- bastone siciliano/ Italy. German tradition is dead, but surviving treatises are inspiration for british quarterstaff.
@9:52 looks like that double handed grab technique works both ways!… could be a good idea if you’re NOT the one with the staff!! You could quickly take it from the opponent…

It was quite interesting to see how in the 2 vs 1 encircled scenario, spinning and whirling, which is so scoffed upon in HEMA, became quite effective.

lovely bolette! I love walking with a shepards crook for hiking walking or for defense and i use it as well when im clearing a path or brush.

That maneuver you did to knock down the non-shortsword attacker is very similar to the kimura grip used in grappling!

Honestly I would assume every culture which had large square cloths had head wraps.. especially buggy places like Scotland and ireland
