Well this game (according to the review) jerks off Lilith and Ava, even the ending song says "This girl is on fire" so I assume they needed to credit her with all yhe shit we did.
Lilith was a weak af character in BL2 beyond a few moments at the end where she shines.

I mean technically he did. Pandora is filled with lunatics and dangerous creatures but it's a perfect place for humanity to move when Earth gets overpopulated/destroyed. Handsome Jack's plan was to whipe out all life on the planet, yes that sounds bad but the bandits are not exactly reasonable. Could he have done it better with the crimson raiders? No. It's shown in the pre-sequal that the "leaders" of the crimson raiders were former friends of Jack that betrayed him. Almost all his life he has been betrayed, abused and just hated even though he just wanted to do good things. Please watch Game Theory's video on the matter if you haven't already. Its so good and made me feel so different every time I play through the game! It really made me see Jack as the hero he truly was.

The writing really gives off “how do you do, fellow kids” vibes to me. They’re desperately trying to appeal to a teenage and preteen demographic, but most of it doesn’t land.
I've been playing the borderlands games for a while, since i was like 12. I'm 21 now and the jokes were just painfully unfunny to me. And the thing is, i wanted to give this game the benefit of the doubt, but by the end i was just disappointed by the writing and story
Yeah the jokes fell off too, it's literally the definition of "lol xd" borderlands 2 had some cringe humor but it was mostly actual jokes not fucking "Amazeballs"

Honestly borderlands 2 had the best story, handsome Jack was an absolute perfect villain, but these two as villains was like 10 steps back, I don’t like the bad guys were just wannabe TH-camrs,

I personally never really liked Claptrap, but hilariously this game had me actually liking him and enjoying his little bits of commentary cause it wasn't much or often. However for the most part I've been dissapointed by the story and characters.

Claptrap/tina/kreig/brick are my favorite characters. My most hated is Pickle/Ava/Lilith

The writing team is different. They have none of the old writers. In fact, the writers for this game have absolutely zero writing credits before this game.

The story after killing Troy felt so incredibly dragged out. In fact, everything you do on Nekrosomething makes so little sense. The planet's setting is incredible, but I just wanted the story to finally end, so I can start with TVHM and mayhem stuff already.
Main story I agree. But there are several side missions that actually got some real chuckles out of me

I had concerns as soon as I knew Anthony Burch left the writing team. People don't realize how much his humor injected life into the series. For reference check out the series HAWP, his sister on the channel is the original voice of tina!
The story in this game was for sure not too great but the whole section with Katagawa and Rhys was pure gold. I replayed it just for that part and I firmly believe Katagawa would've made a Jack-tier villain given enough development.
That would've been sick. Him being the big bad with the Calypso's just doing his bidding. Gearbox dropped the ball for sure
I feel like Katagawa should have been the main villain, Troy and Tyreen should have been scrapped out immediately. With enough development like you said, Katagawa could and should have been the main villain with Maliwan as the big threat. I also feel like the Traunt brothers could have been like the army commanders, one for the light army and the other for the blackforce (or whatever) army.
Very much agree they could’ve made the whole game about Maliwan vs atlas and saved a lot more money and made lots more people happy while saving money to make wonderlands or borderlands 4
Honestly, I think that's the biggest problem with Jack. He left such a huge impact that any antagonistic threat afterwards is essentially doomed to live in his shadow, and be constantly compared to him, along with standards which could lead to some unreasonable expectations.
Plus, I think the Calypsos were a case of where the writers tried so hard to parody obnoxious internet influencers, like the Paul Brothers, that they ended up emulating the obnoxious nature of those people too well.
Oddly enough, 3 years later as streaming culture itself has gotten cringier and annoying, theyve aged really well

If Jack made butt jokes, he was also strangling someone or ordering ponies made out of diamonds! While the twins made butt jokes, it was more like they had a lot of fun in the recording booth snickering and all. It felt so childish and immature. Well, maybe because they are still a bunch of kids while living on Whateverthatplanetiscalled.
I miss Jack and I still hope Borderlands 4 will have Handsome Jack returning in a body. (As the Jackhammer sometimes talks to you: "Eeeey, what if we look for a loader bot and you upload me in there! :D :D ")

Competent writers that incorporated the beloved established characters over almost 15 years of gameplay, instead of shit on ALL of them and kill the most important ones off

I just beat this game for the first time as Amara, and I COMPLETELY feel this. You can tell Amara is a very strong Siren, yet we need to pretend like during every major showdown she isn't there? Like after Troy's fight, Typhon's death, MAYA'S DEATH, she's just not there? Like come on dude, the entire power dynamic of the whole game changes when you have a FOURTH siren on your team

That's honestly the worst thing about the series at this point; that they still haven't included the playable characters as actual... characters. For some reason they're never included into main stories and totally ignored in cut scenes. Why insert a new character no one cares about (Ava) and put her as the main "protag" when your playable character is standing right there and could have taken that role. Really weird story telling.
Mayas skills suck ass. All her skill trees are quite dog shit. Tbh I didn’t think u could make a worse siren than maya but I was quite wrong
I hated how every cutscene acts like you aren't standing right there and the game just happens around you instead of involving you.

The best part is the pretzels bit was unscripted.
Dameon Clarke was actually snacking on pretzels during a take and that "God these pretzels suck" was a legit reaction he had, and they loved it so much they made that the official take.
Tbh, if they remade Borderlands 2, with all this updated gameplay and shit from Borderlands 3, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I agree 100% I never got turned off during BL2 story, yes it could be bothersome since you’re hearing the same things every time; but It never threw me off. Compared to this trash story of BL3 which is focused on females characters only. And on top of that It should’ve been Tina the main girl of this story, but I had to be this annoying little fucker called Ava which makes no sense in the entire story line

jack couch I’m super excited for that, but still a bummer having to wait an entire year for his BL3 debut. Also some tech savvy folks got into the files and found that Krieg was supposed to have a role in the main story. IIRC, Krieg was a spy for Lilith and was supposed to be rescued by the player on Promethea. I’m guessing somewhere along the way they scraped that idea, canned him from the story and created the coffee obsessed person (forgot her name) to replace him.

All four of the Vault hunters played a part of Handsome Jacks death but Lilith got all the credit. Mordecai took over when Lilith was captured and found out where the Warrior is. Brick help get to the tower and helped get to the warrior by blowing up that bridge and both help stage the final attack but no credit

Isnt that kinda of weird how the trailer for BL3 with tannis, vault key and vault hunters, it seem like the vault hunters were going to be animated in cutscene. But since that wasn't case the awkward cutscene with maya death and the vault just doing nothing on the sidelines.

I watched a video explaining the entire story of Borderlands 3. I've been wondering where in the hell is Fiona? We still don't know what happened to her after Tales from the Borderlands.
The first section of tales from the borderlands has more enjoyable written content than the main story of this game. Just skip everything and pretend BL2 just got a massive update friends.

7 months later, but goddamn, joe nailed this review. I was losing momentum playing the shit story, but when i realized i was fighting a “demo-skag-on” (demogorgon from stranger things) i was reinvigorated to play more. The side quests and random encounters are sooo much better than the story. I agree with the little problems too like the inventory lagging
Also they randomly made Zer0 have a crush on Lorelei even though Zer0 is CLEARLY an alien of somekind and wouldn't give a f*** about romancing some random npc human.
Of course joe sleeps in his jeans, Superman shirt and leather jacket at all times.

I just picked up this game cuz it was 20 bucks and by God them Calypso Twins are the worst villains since Far Cry New Dawn... But gameplaywise is one of the most fun games out there.
I want to see the series go in a direction of galaxy wide vaults. Ultimately culminating to some kind of ultimate power. Then..as an epilogue, playing with ultimate power and and epilogue following that. I think it'd be brilliant.

The Calypsos sounded like better villains on paper than in practice. They were extremely cringey and only got more interesting towards the end of the game
No one tops the jacks.
My biggest gripe with the game was how broken some of the guns are. I had a level 27 assault rifle kill the agonizer 3000 in a total of 23 seconds. I didn't dodge or move around it just got annihilated
Gotta have those strong female characters and make sure everyone knows they are strong. And throw away all the male characters except for the 10 seconds when they are in the game.
I mean the games are kinda based on the women tbf, with the whole siren thing. I'm not defending the story btw I think it sucks ass, I think a problem is that the story characters are treated like they do everything while we are actually the ones doing it all
