I was in high school in San Diego, around 1974 or so, my friends and I wanted to drive to Phoenix, Az. to see them in concert. Of course our parents said no way. So we said we were going camping, as we did a lot back then. We had a 5 or 6 car caravan going to the concert. All I remember is parking there and then waking up in the car with the others. Ah, great times...
My dad raised me on this good stuff. Whenever I listen to The Who or any classic rock it puts me in a great mood and reminds me when I was little. Last year, my color guard team took a road trip to a city 2 hours away and this jam came on while I was taking a nap and I immediately woke up and shut my eyes again and was tapping my feet the whole time.
In 1976, I moved from a city to a rural Australian campus - and as luck would have it - to the premier on-campus party dorm (think "Animal House", with more civilised attitudes to women). This song was a wonderful, liberating anthem to a life beyond the suburbs, to beyond the prevailing political climate of the time. It was a wonderful call-to-arms song, whether played at a dorm party or else within the comforting arms of a beloved partner. I love this song more and more as the years pass, not only for the fond memories, but for the consummate energy and conquer-the-horizons narrative.

I saw them live, just after this record was released; we skipped school and went early to general admition, and got seats 3 rows away from the band, in the middle! My friend Rofler, caught Daltrey's broken tamborine. I was deaf for a day or two afterwards! What a great show it was, Keith Moon breaking drumsticks..nothing like it.
How stoned was Keith that night? I saw him once in Detroit... He was totaled onstage. Complete wreck! I think he soiled himself once onstage. But all his insanity and relentless drinking... No one, but nobody, could bang the drums like him!
"Let's get together before we get much older." There's a lot of truth to that line. I've seen it with my parents who are too old now to get together with family and friends because of health and mobility issues or all their family and friends from their generation are gone now. Don't keep putting it off. Life won't wait around for you.
To me, it always meant love with a girl. Hell, this is the band who sang "Hope I die before I get old.." I always wanted to use that line on a girl but never did. Missed opportunity since one of the loves of my life is a Rock Studies Professor.

Same here, saw them in concert in Denver in 71?, 72? . That's where I learned to chew up a bit of Kleenex and stuff it in your ears. Believe It or Not folks it actually allows you to hear everything but at a reduced volume and no ear damage. You can actually hear BETTER at a rock concert with the right type of earplugs.
*freezeframe* Yup that's me! The one who disappointed my elders, you're probably wondering how I got myself into this situation, well to answer that we've gotta go all the way back to the summer of '83
So ahead of its time as the WHO mostly was their entire career. My 67 year old friend tells me that this was mind blowing in 1971 and every couple years they followed.
"It just goes to show. Dream big. Live big. Love big... Fall to your death down a giant f**king hole; now I know, which is 0% of the battle apparently"
I actually picture the opposite. I imagine a 30 year old man realising that the age when his dreams were supposed to come true already passed, and when he is about to cry, is relieved, realizing that all the time he fought for his dreams was better than everything he imagined
This song is absolute proof that music, especially rock, is almost hypnotic. People could be doing something totally chill like painting or drawing, then this song plays and you start headbanging and playing imaginary drums. I love the Who SO MUCH!!
This is my first time listening to this song and thats exactly what i fucking did! I started headbanging and playing imaginary drums! Like no shit! Your comment spoke to me on like a really deep level just now man. Thank you.
@Pedro DLR Instead of complaining about how the younger generation aquired their taste of music, maybe you should be happy that so many younger people can still enjoy music that their parents and the older generation liked. Everyone knows a song from somewhere, it doesnt matter if its from a movie, a video game or from an old LP you find in the basement, it doesnt make their taste somehow invalid. What matters is how they listen to a song and how they keep it famous...
Pedro DLR Calm down my friend! Don’t bash on the younger generation for how they got their taste in music. It’s wonderful that our world is so connected that we can listen to whatever music we want to. I’m part of the younger generation too and I found this song through my dad but so what if others find this song differently. Discovering music is always a positive thing my friend. You have a lot to learn coming from a 16 year old.
Pedro DLR I’m sorry if my comment came off a bit offensive as I didn’t know that you were joking. Anyways thanks for explaining and sorry for the long reply time.

Woodstock actually: "Townshend stated in an interview that the song is about "the absolute desolation of teenagers at Woodstock, where audience members were strung out on acid and 20 people had brain damage. The irony was that some listeners took the song to be a teenage celebration: 'Teenage Wasteland, yes! We're all wasted!'"".
People say the beginning of this sounds like the song 'The Best Song Ever" by One Direction (even though this was released first) so i decided to check it out....
*record scratch* *freeze frame* *this song starts playing* "See that guy? Yeah. That's me. Charming, I know. You're probably wondering how I ended up here. To tell you that, we're gonna have to go back. WAY back." *Shows baby main character* "Woah, tiger! Not that far back!" *Fast fowards to a school bus emptying* "Thereeee we go! It was the first day of a school, and I only had one thing on my mind: Stacey O"Donell. See, I didn't know it then, but my life was about to be turned upside down." *music fades out* *scene actually begins*
there's a difference between a passing interest in pop culture and actual interest in music. that's why music sucks today. it's not insulting the people who make it, it's insulting the idiots who fail to recognise talent and just want simplistic shit to prevent them from thinking. the majority of people hear something popular and flock to it. this isn't popular because of culture. it's popular because it's amazingly crafted. being put in a tv show just proves that music today isn't worth using.
My sister and I saw the who about ten years ago. This is the song The Who opened with at the concerts. I will never forget the smile on her face once this song started playing. We lost my sister to domestic abuse 4 years later. Anytime this some comes on, I still see her beautiful smile. Hold your loved ones close to your heart, enjoy every moment together. Never miss an opportunity to say "I love you."
Josh Plays! Saw them in manny last April it was great seeing it live for the first time with my old man it’s a memory that will stay with me till the grave
lol I've been searching for this song for like half an hour and the now my search history is plastered with " Flashback song " and " flashback piano riff"
Why is it that when I listen to this song I get a warn and fuzzy feeling. a feeling of consolation and satisfaction knowing that we created something, my generation (so to speak ;). we created some of the greatest music that ever was, and that will stand the test of time, and that I don't think will ever be beaten. It was a wonderful time to be alive, possibly the high point of humanity. the human race is lost now as we submit our freedom to enslavement and dehumanisation through technology. but we had a good run in the 60s 70s 80s and 90s. . . and I was a part of it, and if you are 40 or 50 or over, you were too, and you know what I'm talking about. peace out to the children of the 60s 70s 80s and 90s.
81 years young and so fucking happy I was part of that generation. WE still kick butt. Wouldn't change a thing if I had the chance to do it over again. If you know, you know.
Lets form a band and make music like this then :P. We dont have to become famous as long as we enjoy it and share it with others who also share our taste in music.
imagine being 17 in the summer of '71, driving on a country road, and this comes on for the first time. i think i would have needed to pullover and take a knee. but hey, at least we got taylor swift and jack antonoff today?
Narekaci Shahbazyan Nah, the only joke here is your attitude, learn to accept that some people may have different opinions to you. And I did specifically state it was my opinion.
The best part about this whole thing is the album cover, all for band members walk away zippin up their pants after pissin on a giant concrete pillar in the middle of nowhere....classy.
Whoa, I was 18 when this album came out. From your comment, I just realized they took a piss. Musta been to fucked up to remember. Sober now 37 years. Woulda been the death o' me otherwise
My 18th birthday was on the last day of Woodstock, I am so blessed to have lived during the greatest time of music since Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, etc. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. (Charles Dickens, "A Tale of Two Cities"). Rock and Roll!
Kacper Szymaniak stranger things is the best obviously here for stranger things and no I’m not being sarcastic it is truly the best can’t wait for season 3👌🏻!
Kermit the Frog's Mexican Uncle I guess people have different opinions, but truly a majority of the world have an admiration for the show, so I feel that you don’t have the need to tell you’re opinion negatively. 😊

I love the edit where Vogler wordlessly walks in, turns off the song, and walks out again. XD Also, I'm so grateful to my mom that I grew up listening to music like this.
Rumor has it everytime you listen to this the intro actually gets longer.
I am fine with that

Woodstock actually: "Townshend stated in an interview that the song is about "the absolute desolation of teenagers at Woodstock, where audience members were strung out on acid and 20 people had brain damage. The irony was that some listeners took the song to be a teenage celebration: 'Teenage Wasteland, yes! We're all wasted!'"".
MAYBE IT'S THE WAY SHE WALKED OW STRAIGHT INTO MY HEART AND STOLE IT
Your probably wondering how I got here it all started when I opened a incognito page
I wasn’t wondering but thanks for the information. Can you describe exactly how you got here?
@@Anony298 it all started in the summer of '16
This is why I don't have parents
It all started when I realized I was the same age as half the stranger things kids...
No why should we
People say the beginning of this sounds like the song 'The Best Song Ever" by One Direction (even though this was released first) so i decided to check it out....
And it's almost like a cover
Adachi oh.
No, it isn't. It's plagiarism.
guessing you have come from watch mojo? me too :)
I checked out the song "the best song ever" after I see your comment, to say they sounds alike??? what a insult to a true classic
Stranger Things - Season 3! Let's rock it!
Your fast.
Guilty! Stranger things 3 brought me here too
same
I screamed when I saw it
Yes finally!!
Woah woah woah. Do you ever have one of those moments where you think, How the hell did I get here?
3:57 violin rip gets me every time. Requiescat in pace Keith Moon.
Wut?
+FlyLo Skwad Latin lol. Artie's been playing too much assassin's creed
That is not italian dude. That is far from it: it's in fact latin. yup ezio speaks latin
+d rx Italian is derived from Latin,at least that's how I remember it.So not that far.
Johan Liebert It is, but latin is quite different than italian, you can't really say they are the same thing
Truly one of the greatest songs of all friggin' time!
yup...oh ya
I concur
*record scratch*
*freeze frame*
*this song starts playing*
"See that guy? Yeah. That's me. Charming, I know. You're probably wondering how I ended up here. To tell you that, we're gonna have to go back. WAY back."
*Shows baby main character*
"Woah, tiger! Not that far back!"
*Fast fowards to a school bus emptying*
"Thereeee we go! It was the first day of a school, and I only had one thing on my mind: Stacey O"Donell. See, I didn't know it then, but my life was about to be turned upside down."
*music fades out*
*scene actually begins*
What's that from?
Nothing. I just made it up as a generic teen movie intro.
Kool. Sounds genuine, if that means anything. :)
Reminded me of the robot chicken sketch ngl
its a rip off of the robot chicken sketch lmao
I am, and it is truly awesome!!! Just like it was when I first heard it age 15. I’m 64 now.
nothing brought me here except my love for music, sorry
Etsiii
Why not just be happy that more people are being exposed to good music? Its not about how you find a song, its about how it makes you feel
Jesus, thank you, at least know I'm not the only one left lol
you're not special
there's a difference between a passing interest in pop culture and actual interest in music. that's why music sucks today. it's not insulting the people who make it, it's insulting the idiots who fail to recognise talent and just want simplistic shit to prevent them from thinking. the majority of people hear something popular and flock to it.
this isn't popular because of culture. it's popular because it's amazingly crafted. being put in a tv show just proves that music today isn't worth using.
Always loved The Who, But Stranger Things 3 made me come back to this gem of a track!
Jordi Danen same bro I totally forgot about this song and the beauty of it
OMG ME! I CAN'T BELIEVE IM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE LOL
same

This is ONE of the best songs ever.
one of the best songs ever written in rock history...
The world of music has much to offer, but there isn't a great deal of of it that is as good as this!
Most recognizable rock song of all-time
crazypants 1234 i think stairway to heaven might have something to say about that
@@retiredLBPD lol!
@@retiredLBPD I think Bo Rap might too
WHO brought you here people might ask. i say it's a silly question. we all know WHO brought us here
Who?
Doctor
Donkey Rolla I came here cause I like The Who
Donkey Rolla Hahaha..good one 👍🏾
Donkey Rolla I see what you did there 😉
My sister and I saw the who about ten years ago.
Just saw The Who in Rochester last night. What an amazing show...
Josh Plays! I'll. I bet it was awesome. Where is their next stop
No you didn't. You saw Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey. The Who died with Keith Moon.
T.L. Blackburn Yeah and I'm sure Keith Moon was the one who made up the entire band lmao dumbass
Canandaigua show??
Josh Plays! Saw them in manny last April it was great seeing it live for the first time with my old man it’s a memory that will stay with me till the grave
lol I've been searching for this song for like half an hour and the now my search history is plastered with " Flashback song " and " flashback piano riff"
i always thought this song was called teenage wasteland
@@Freerangemeggs the original demo of the song from 1970/71 was called Teenage Wasteland
Awe thanks man
Wow lucky life must have been great with the music cars and movies so jealous
81 years young and so fucking happy I was part of that generation. WE still kick butt. Wouldn't change a thing if I had the chance to do it over again. If you know, you know.
Very special band. One of the 3 or 4 greatest bands of all time.
Bought my first two LPs in 1972. They were Who's Next and Santana III.
Who are the two thousand people who do not like this song?? Insane.
I would love to hear why.....insane indeed.
they are at one direction concert now, and think this is plagiarism... jajaja
Bill Russo fucking these two thousand people
to be fair there's also 121 thousand people who do like it
Millenials
makes me sad music like this aint made anymore :'(, im just 17 and i hate the shit thats made today, love old rock like this
Lets form a band and make music like this then :P. We dont have to become famous as long as we enjoy it and share it with others who also share our taste in music.
Benjamin Våge i agree with u, still would be nice that others listen to it, not to shitty music like anaconda...
Fuck off.
Cameron West u fuck off u shitty nasty little troll
i am 16 and i think just like you
Thank you, Family Guy and satirical humor.
hahahahahaha family guy brought me here too
same here :)
Yup
wooooo family guy

imagine being 17 in the summer of '71, driving on a country road, and this comes on for the first time. i think i would have needed to pullover and take a knee.
but hey, at least we got taylor swift and jack antonoff today?
It is the definitive intro of Rock n Roll songs. All other intros pale in comparison. Long live the Who. Rock n Roll could use another one.
I beg to differ, nothing gets you more pumped than a Uriah Heep or Deep Purple intro.
Welcome to the Jungle eclipses all imo.
Is that a joke? What is Welcome to the Jungle compared to Machine Head or Demons and Wizard, or In Rock, nothing.
Narekaci Shahbazyan Nah, the only joke here is your attitude, learn to accept that some people may have different opinions to you. And I did specifically state it was my opinion.
D Wright - METALHEAD
Welcome to the Jungle > Machine Head Pffft AHAHAHAHA
The best part about this whole thing is the album cover, all for band members walk away zippin up their pants after pissin on a giant concrete pillar in the middle of nowhere....classy.
Antoine Zogbi It’s a concrete piling in a Slag heap at Easington Colliary, County Durham UK.
Whoa, I was 18 when this album came out. From your comment, I just realized they took a piss. Musta been to fucked up to remember. Sober now 37 years. Woulda been the death o' me otherwise
Townshend absolutely loathes this album cover. In his book, he spends a good page ranting about it.
Antoine Zogbi PUNK
It's a joke spoofing 2001 A Space Odyssey.
So many memories I was 19 in '71 and just lived through the best decade of music, little did I know that there was so much more to come.
When this drums kick in! I wish we had rock like this still.
If you are here because of Stranger Things... Then good for you! The Who is one of the greatest rock bands. So enjoy!
Kacper Szymaniak thank you for being the only polite person in the comment section!! 🙏
Kacper Szymaniak stranger things is the best obviously here for stranger things and no I’m not being sarcastic it is truly the best can’t wait for season 3👌🏻!
Stranger things sucks lmao
CSI: NY is where its at, greatest show
Kermit the Frog's Mexican Uncle I guess people have different opinions, but truly a majority of the world have an admiration for the show, so I feel that you don’t have the need to tell you’re opinion negatively. 😊

Everyone's talking about the intro but not 4:05 and onward
Neo I have that cello ruminating in my head and I couldn’t figure out what it was from. 4:05 and onward!
best part
@@batDOG.RECORDS i am neoark,
Reminds me of that Conan movie
Love it
No single song influenced both my wasted and gloriously wonderful youth as this one!
The Who, well aware of the impact of a "drop". Goodness, that's good.
I love the edit where Vogler wordlessly walks in, turns off the song, and walks out again. XD Also, I'm so grateful to my mom that I grew up listening to music like this.
