Lyrics:
Oh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Ooh, see the fire is sweepin'
Our very street today
Burns like a red coat carpet
Mad bull lost your way
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
The flood is threat'ning
My very life today
Gimme, gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

Merry Clayton's voice crack on the word "murder" at 3:00 might be the best "happy accident" ever recorded. You can hear someone else in the studio react to it with a "Whoo." They knew it was a magical music moment.
That was Mick yelling in approval as Merrys voice cracked. Afterwards said she would do it again and hit the note, Mick was like.. NO!.. THAT IS PURE GOLD!!!!!!.. It was at night and a pregnant Mary was literally in her hair curlers in the bed when the stones rep contacted her at home to do the song. Mary originally said no she wasn't getting out of her comfy bed. It was Mary's husband that convinced her to go, as it was paying good money. It being late at night and her being tired helped to contribute to one of the best voice cracks ever recorded. It's here on you tube. 20ft from stardom
First time I noticed, now I will always look forward for this part
Cheers Mike - great comment!. I think when she cracks the top note, there's an ultra high pitch note which pierces through exactly in tune - but way up to the ceiling. Mick hears it the moment. Diamond stuff.
I love the way she reminisces in this clip. th-cam.com/video/ChONufP0FEs/w-d-xo.html
This part always gives me goosebumps and the desire war cry. Badass part.
Most definitely the climax of the song. Every time I listen I wait for that single part.
That fucking opening riff. That riff alone makes this song so memorable.
Played this on the beach with my mates in Cornwall in 1969, one of the guys had brought a portable battery driven record deck. Utterly amazing, still the best intro to any song ever in the history of intro's.
Absolutely brilliant

It was never really played out there "Rainbow," "Paint it Black," "Under my Thumb," "Jumping Jack Flash" yes, but this was then an obscure album track. It wasn't really until the 80's when it was used in films & adverts that the band even included it on set lists at concerts.
So no. I don't think the guy or the 26 year old in his avatar did have it "blasting out" there!
Hands down the very best backing vocals ever laid down. Merry Clayton will forever hold that crown. What a QUEEN
Merry Clayton is the best back up vocalist of all time. And there's no debate. It's not even close
It might be my favorite vocal ever. The lead vocal.
The song would be a really good song without her voice. Her voice MADE this song great and cemented it in history. Especially when she gets tired during the all night recording session and her voice is breaking. It gives the song more depth and feeling. Classic!
Unfortunately Merry soon lost her baby, as she was pregnant at the time of this recording.
@@kmanbay6580 Just read about that recently, how sad.
@@kmanbay6580 The only other one that comes close is the lady that does the vocals in Pink Floyd's great gig in the sky, always gives me goose bumps.

Ur a jewy 🍣 stop the holocaust in the Middle East ☠️

Merry Clayton's vocals are absolutely haunting on this track. Incredible performance.

Not only was Merry pregnant this session was so intense when she got home she miscarried.
That is a myth
I was going to say imho she is very underrated on this song!

This is one of the greatest songs in rock history
So true. And it’s thanks to Rolling Stones longtime mentor and teacher and father figure , Klaus Nomi. Mick Jagger had said “ we only achieved success because of the guidance and teaching and writing of Klaus Nomi .” In fact this song is modeled after Klaus Nomis hit , Total Eclipse, as a Stones tribute to the man who made them . Klaus Nomi had such an impact on the world through all the bands he mentored and made not only the Stones but. Journey, Queen. Even newer stuff like Guns n Roses. Klaus Nomi deserves all the credit
What are the others? I know that one was the number one rock and roll song in 1958 De De Dinah by Frankie Avalon. What are the others, Josh?
The greatest
I would think Josh is referring to other great songs like paint it black, and of course Led Zeppelin’s stairway to heaven, , there’s a few . Journey, the Beatles, and many other bands. The common denominator is of course, The Stone’s, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd up to even Guns & Roses and Metallica all credit their success to all of their longtime mentor and teacher and father figure Klaus Nomi. All the greatest are his creations . They all give Klaus Nomi credit for their success. If you listen to Klaus Nomis hit “ Total Eclipse “ you will clearly see where the Stones got their style and method.
How do we measure greatness? It should be easy to prove which songs are the greatest, once we realize how to measure greatness.
@@danielhoran8416
I can never get enough of that dark multi-layered guitar riff intro by Keith Richards echoing around Merry Clayton’s soaring vocal. It never grows old, I’ve loved it since I heard it as child in the early 70s. It’s the greatest intro I’ve ever heard in a rock song, it will never be bettered 🙏🏽
I'm with you 100%. Best song intro of all time
Its sad that the back up singer merry clayton went home after singing this song and lost her baby because of it.
@@roadrunnerproductionshavas1591 I heard about that, Merry is an unusually resilient woman with a formidable reputation for working relentlessly. She put tremendous effort into recording sessions with the Stones for Gimme Shelter, during her pregnancy. The Stones were reeling from Brian Jones death in summer 1969 and not in a great financial situation at the time, and the deadly Altamont concert disaster nearly destroyed them as a band later that year. But I would like to think that they gave Merry their support in some way after she suffered that huge baby miscarriage trauma. She made Gimme Shelter a huge hit for the Stones, and it came with a great sacrifice on her part. She survived a serious car accident in her mid 60s which left her a double leg amputee, but she’s still busy in the music industry as if the accident (2014) was just a blip, at 75 years of age! This is a woman of great character who deserves so much more.
The vocal at the beginning is actually Mick Jagger singing in falsetto.
@roadrunnerproductionshavas1591 how did she lose her baby?
Does anyone else get chills when Merry Clayton's voice breaks? Because I sure do.

I absolutely agree with you my friend.
I still dress like this, was born in 85?

I always, thought this was one of Mick Jagger's sarcastic pro-drug addict's songs. I never could hear the lyric clearly, like in many Rolling Stones songs. Instead it is a slam song to the 19 year olds that were drafted into Vietnam war and the ones that survived and alive today must hate this song. I think our U.S.A. should have let Germany kick England's ass during WW ll , then helped them afterward. Had the Jagger's survived , then Mick Jagger might have had more respect for Veterans. I always heard ''Whoa children it's just a shot away'' and not ''War children'' !
@@pauldudakadanielthomson8890 Soooo.... you're a neo-nazi?
Well ahead of everything going
Still applies today
RIP Charlie Watts. Faithful to his wife for 57 years. You can probably only count on one hand how many rock stars are able to say that
That was good of him😂,classic song✌️
One hand? One finger!
He did manage to develope a drug habit late in life which must have taken some doing!
@@pup1008 lol, that's funny.
Mick can't.
❤️🙏
This was the # 1 Song played when I was in Viet Nam ..... We played the shit out of it !!!!!
San Francisco ain’t nam dude…tho it’s gettin there
Everything about this song works. Micks snarling vocals totally in command from start to finish. Bills bass the pulsating heartbeat of the record. Charlie’s precision drums adding raw power. And of course Keith’s haunting guitar, the ethereal spirit of the track hovering over all of it from its haunting start to sublime fade out. Just a band at the top of its game untouched. I could listen to this a million times and still get something new from it.
Buried my old man to this piece of beautiful genius... 🇬🇧. What a fucking gem
I’m 50 years old and still get good bumps while listening to this song. It brings up so many memories of me growing up in west-Berlin hearing my parents play the stones day in day out. Under my thumb, paint it black, street fighting man, she’s a rainbow and so many more classics that will never loose their magic. The Rolling Stones at their very best. Time flies
Reminds me of Germany too... at a Kaserne north east of Frankfurt on Fulda Gap flying choppers after reunification and into Balkan missions and then 9/11/2001 and spearheading Iraq War in 2003 while having just left Germany after years and getting into 101st Airborne Division. I was in Kentucky/Tennessee at ft Campbell for two weeks and flew back to Germany that I had just left, refueled and ended up in Kuwait right on iraq border 28feb2003... by march17th of that year, every second of every day became "just a shot away"... things get finicky and strange in War, but hell, when can one have so much adrenaline legal by ones own government? We were bullet magnets in the air those first few weeks, but by may, we were victorious... whatever that means...
@@justonpearson935 glad you made it back safe brother. the Middle East was no joke during the 80's- 2000's
I really loved reading this. Peace.
"Good bumps?" 😃
Time is fleeting..
Those vocals... Those lyrics hit so hard. Her energy is unmatched. This song has feels for decades.
Someday 1000 years from now a guy will enter a club and hear that magical opening riff and feel the same way as I still do ( with goosebumps).
The opening riff contains everything the universe has to offer.
Well put! The majestic yet haunting riff is absolutely the best Stones song opening ever, and one of the best in rock history.
Goosebumps every time. And I've seen them live 5 times. Its unreal
Totally agree 🤝
No discussion about damn facts!
At least you remember what it has to offer
R.I.P. Charlie. A quiet man who let his drums speak for him. My condolences to his family
Yes a real heartbreak
I never knew the words until seeing this yesterday. I thought it was "woah children" and "just a shout away"
I thought it was " More Children, it's just a Shout away" because it came across that way really bummed me out even though I liked the voodoo hypnotic guitars and timing !😢
2024 and here we go again
Gotta love the war hungry democrats
cheney/bush r war criminals 2 🇮🇱🌈
This song is such a masterpiece and will never get old.
Got that right !!!

"Good music doesn't age"
IT WAS GOOD THEN AND IT'S STILL GOOD NOW, A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S. ✌️😎🏴
My husband loved this record, they played it at his funeral this week.
I'm so sorry for your loss- I hope that you'll be able to listen to The Rolling Stones, watch his favorite films and simply member all of the beautiful memories you have together with a smile. After all, grief is only so painful because we were lucky enough to have loved somebody so fantastic in the first place. Take care, I'm pouring a glass of wine and toasting to your husband as I'm listening to this song
So sorry for your loss. Great tune.
Sending condolences from a stranger to another, I too have a deep connection to this song, my parents used to play all their music when I was younger and the stones being one of their favourite bands(mothers) I was always looking into my fathers record collection, it was when I was 16/17yrs if she my mother knocked upon my bedroom door to give me the sad news my grandfather (her father) had passed away, I remember closing the door pressing play on my tape deck and this is the song that came on, I hope you carry great memories into tomorrow and keep those cherished moments forever. ❤️
Omg .xx hope you're ok .
@@RuthlessDJs wow just wow..captured every emotion..bless you....xxx
Song is still so relevant today . Haunting and telling for sure. Made over 50 years ago and still timeless
60 anos depois.
Mesmo PRAZER de ouvir essa Banda.
Até as músicas ruins são boas. 😊
This song has always sounded apocalyptic to me, almost like the end of days, set to music...
Idk why but I felt like this song would go well in one of the borderlands games
NAM
Have you heard of; war, rape, and murder? They are all hand in hand, welcome to reality.
It is
@@Mr.Meeseeks024 That's a Scorsese line if ever I heard one.
This was my husbands favourite song of all time. We played it at his funeral. His little 11 year old granddaughter sang it out loud and proud. They sang it together all the time. Beautiful memories 😢😢😢 The last concert he was at was the stones in Dublin with his daughters and eldest grandson. This was the song he wanted all night. Thank you for playing it. ❤❤
😍❤
Beautiful story god bless
She felt comfortable screaming "Rape, Murder"? Damn she's brave
@@kingvexthefirst For her they changed the lyrics to "grape, burger"
My Condolences!
Merry Clayton's vocals are, in my opinion, the best of ANY stones record. That's a hard fought title too.
My father passed away May 19, 2021. He was 73. We bonded so much over classic rock and he seemed to be really into The Rolling Stones the last year of his life. What an era of music. Hendrix, The Who, Neil Young, Beatles….. our conversations never got old. Miss him.
It’s good you miss him. It shows how much you care about him and he cared about you. Hope you’re doing okay brother 🤙
My dad is similar age. Has the most amazing vinyl collection. Full of similar stuff. I was brought up on it. What an era. Never to be repeated. Sorry for your loss x
Magnolia HBR, I,M SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS MY FRIEND, YOUR FATHER HAD A GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC AND HE,S PAST THAT ON TO SO REMEMBER EVERY TIME YOU PLAY A STONES RECORD HE,S THERE WITH YOU IN YOUR HEART, MAY PEACE BE WITH YOU MY FRIEND. ✌️😎🏴
Rest In Peace to your pop, man. Keep your chin up, brother. I feel you. 🍻
Value those. My son is 25, just asked me about a Bad Co. song on the radio. Then he said sounds like the guy from the Firm 😂 that’s my boy.
When a song from the 60s still goes hard now, you know it’s good
@Mr TATTAGLIA the pusher man, recording on the song began in February 1969. The vocals were added In October/November.

one of their best. that woman doing back up vocals is incredible.
Merry Clayton. Was awaken at midnight by friend and great producer, Jack Nitzsche, to come down to the studio and sing. She was pregnant, did it anyway, and had a miscarriage on her return home. This song has a lot of weird stories attached to it.
@@IggyPelman if this is true.. God damn!
Only reason i listen to this song is that southern gospel vibe vocals 💘
Omg yes merry Clayton my favorite aunt was named after her. AMAYYYYYZING!
That's Merry Clayton. You can find a video here on TH-cam about how she did that in one take in the middle of the night. She blew the boys away.
