Personally, I think the subscription model is what is keeping the rate of new releases so slow. The slower they release games, the longer you will have to stay subscribed. If they just let you buy each game, it would make more sense to release them all as soon as possible.

That's a good guess, but nothing is stopping them from selling the games at the same pace WITHOUT a subscription model. The only difference with the subscription model is that you don't OWN the games. Once the subscription service shuts down all your games are gone. For good. At least with their previous model you could actually go back and re-download them as many times as you wanted as you were renting them indefinitely

@@itsmesteve1081 It's not a guess, its a solid explanation of Nintendo's strategy. If they were to resell these games, people can buy them but you don't bind them as customers. They just buy them and buy the newer triple A titles on their PS5, and it's the new games that consume ressources that the company needs to get paid off.
Since your saves are bound to a subscription, you will always have to buy Nintendo and subscribe to continue where you left off.

This is why physical media and emulation should never die. You legitimately cannot rely on companies of any kind to maintain their own library when their first priority is money. This is especially true with digital only titles and subscription-based availability because once they're gone they will become abandonware.

The reality is the fans have one thing Nintendo has long since lost: Passion.
When you have passion for a game or project it shows, when you're trying to just make bank with minimal effort, it shows even more.
Nintendo's majority Switch lineup has been nothing but cashgrabs and not much of actual value, the list of games I can name off the back of my hand that aren't cash grabs and are actually good games on the Switch that are exclusive to the Switch (Meaning BoTW is excluded from this list), and those names are:
      1) Age of Calamity
      2) Link's Awakening
      3) Pokemon Legends Arceus
      4) Super Mario Odyssey
These are the only games on Switch that are made directly by Nintendo that DON'T feel like cash grabs for the Switch. Ultimate 100% felt like a cashgrab with all that paid DLC and the world of light was mid as fuck. I mean no disrespect to Sakurai, but Subspace will never be topped.

  • @FoxScot
    @FoxScot ปีที่แล้ว +273

That ending really does drive the point home, and I'll admit I'm kind of guilty of that myself. Nintendo knows people will eat up what they put out. It's unfortunate but even releasing things like the GB and GBA games to the switch online service was kind of done when they weren't having a bunch of heavy hitters on the horizon. They are keeping virtual console and certain game releases in their back pocket because they know if they release them at the right time people will eat it up, and they are right.
It's a business tactic, one that while I don't like because I prefer to just buy and own my games, it works and it works to great effect. They won't change their tactics until the consumers do which sadly likely won't change for a long time.

The higher ups at Nintendo were probably throwing a fit that their shitty subscription service wasn't getting the money they wanted, then they saw the virtual console games on the other systems and thought by shutting them down, they would be able to force more players to migrate to NSO. If you shut down services like these and give your consumers an alternative that's worse, then you lose the right to bitch about piracy on these old systems.

Those companies can sell groups of older games together at a higher base price instead of people only wanting to get a couple titles.

But after months of having been drip fed more games into the service, charging extra for access to gameboy advance games and the ability to rent DLC for a few of them, AND having that done while they close down the stores that had heaps more games to choose from and actually own... It's grown to be rather tiresome and aggravating the more this continues on.

I've been told that wanting Nintendo to bring back Virtual Console for the Switch makes me an "entitled gamer" somehow, even though all I want is the same thing that existed for Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. I'm not saying Switch Online shouldn't exist for people who would rather have *temporary* access to the whole library, but I'm only interested in paying once per classic game to download and keep "forever" (well, as long as the console still works) so I don't see why Nintendo is no longer giving us that alternative. Some of us just aren't interested in paying for live services just to play classic games (and I don't play games online so I have no interest in any other features on Switch Online that isn't classic game-related).
Minor correction that doesn't have anything to do with the main point of the video but most SNES and N64 games were dirt cheap at flea markets and thrift stores during the Wii era, even into the early Wii U era. It's mainly the past half decade, especially during the pandemic, when prices on older games started getting ridiculous. Although, it certainly is understandable that it was easier to just download those games from the online shop rather than having to track down old consoles and individual cartridges, especially for people who were just kids when the Wii and Wii U were "current" consoles.

Seriously. People would throw money at Nintendo if they would stop being so anti-business and anti-consumer. They have the means to open all digital stores from ds, 3ds, wii u shop, etc all on the switch and the switch would handle it and they would make crazy money. They don't. They release a lot of games that people don't care about and that's why people stick with physical copies when they can get them. Some rare copies are insane to get.
Besides, if I can emulate games I have, then I can buy some Nintendo stuff of equal value, say, a Nintendo online subscription and pay for the games I want to add. They get their money, and I get the games I want. Ethical. Withholding a product out of spite is not ethical, no matter how you shake a stick at it.

Actually I feel like Nintendo isn't the Nintendo that I've known during my childhood anymore. I don't have any issue with Nintendo since they made me happy with a lot of good game for so many years during my life but, since Iwata isn't here anymore and since the Switch era, I feel like something have change with themself by start that they seem to take care less about their own community than before. After all and despite I'm not too much fan of Pokemon, it's always funny to see somes people among the Nintendo community who claim that Nintendo still care for their own community but they care so much about their own community that Nintendo doesn't even try to talk a bit with Gamefreak / Pokemon Compagnie about the situation about those last Pokemon games we got on the Switch as the people are pretty upset with the Pokemon games by always complaint about issue with graphics, lags and more but their problem stay the same years after years with the Pokemon serie so I don't hide it's always fun to read all those "love" from the Pokemon community toward the Pokemon franchise but specially toward Scarlet.
Let's not forget that a lot of people still waiting for a new Star Fox, F-Zero and Kid Icarus game or a remaster of a old game if Nintendo is too lazy but that we have at least something because it's still empty about them on the Switch since 7 years who don't have any new game (and screw the people who say there will not have any new game for them because the sales are less hight than a ordinary Mario and Pokemon game but it's not a excuse for stop to made new game for them because we can easily talk about how Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush get somes bad sales even in his original country where the franchise is born in Japan by being the game who wasn't the one who get a lot of sale for one week unlike his previous games who wasn't a failure so did the Kirby serie was stopped after the failure of Rainbow Paintbrush? Not really because in that case it would mean no more Kirby for the next gen console with no game for them on the Switch).
To be honnest, I see more Nintendo be more a Rockstar Games, Activision, EA Games-like by take care more about the money that they gonna win than to be and act like Nintendo by take care of their own community and enjoyed taking somes risk because the real Nintendo was known for being innovative so the question is: It's supposed to be "innovative" to release another old Mario game port who get a lot of succeed on the Nintendo 3DS such Luigi's Mansion 2 to the Switch and for a price more hight than the first time but nothing really new beside the HD? Because they look like more sissy than brave, specially when they was know for made one new fresh exclusive Mario Kart game per console since the SNES era but they just give us a popular 2014 Wii U game who end up as a port on the Switch so no new Mario Kart as a exclusivity for the Switch.
So I can like Mario and somes others franchises but we eat too much the same franchises every years with more than 10 Mario and Pokemon games, 7 Zelda games, 6 Kirby and Fire Emblem games and not much for their others franchises with the fact that Nintendo isn't just Mario, Pokemon, Kirby, Zelda and Fire Emblem because they have more than that but, still, it pretty disapointing that they don't move too much their ass for be more productive for do something else than another Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, Kirby and Fire Emblem game that we got mainly every years.
That why I don't gonna buy their next gen console after the Switch because what the point to buy their next console if it's for be disapointing again? Getting better graphics but in exchange we got a lot of Mario, Pokemon, Kirby, Zelda and Fire Emblem game with somes old Mario game port and we put all the others franchises far away in the closet and with still a paying online? Sorry but it don't work with me this sauce. That why I gonna stay on PC with Steam because, at least on PC and with Steam, we got a lot of good game, variety and a free online so I can like the Mario serie and some others but I hardly see myself spend more than 100 dollars on their next console just for play Mario and Zelda per years and that all so if they release a new Star Fox, F-Zero, Kid Icarus or a Smash Bros game on it, maybe I gonna be interest by Nintendo again but, for now, the hype is at 0 about their next console despite all the rumour people say about it.

Remember the Classic Mini systems Nintendo started and ended between 2016 - 2017?
They put NES and SNES in such amazing (and surprisingly controversial via online sales) tiny packages. Of course, those came out when the Wii U retired while the Switch was just making its way into of the starting gates with so much potential. However, given how successful both the NES and SNES were, the Nintendo 64 was the next most obvious step in the right direction. If Nintendo wanted to make at least one more mini console, this would’ve been it. Unfortunately, just 2 systems, and they just call it quits. Somehow, even before Reggie and Bowser said it, people KNEW it was never going to happen. Instead, Nintendo opted to put N64 games into a $50 annual trial in a service already beyond repair. And from the looks and sounds of things, Nintendo isn’t going to let it go even when the next-gen system launches, which won’t be too far off from now. So how can this be justified? Given they’ve actually been fixing the emulation issues, but not enough to win back audiences.
Tbh, Nintendo needs another Wii U, but not to the point of a marketing disaster. I mean to sell worse than the existing Switch, but much better than the Wii U. Let’s face it, the more sales Nintendo makes by pulling crap like this on people, the more anti-consumer it becomes.

Look, I am primarily a Nintendo player and I 100% agree with you. The NSO is not a good deal, I mean, sure it is not a very small amount of games there but, a huge part of the library of the games are pretty lackluster, and is not like there were not good games for NES and SNES to be added. I mean, Mega Man, Castlevania, Street Fighter, Final Fight, Adventure Island and the list goes on, none of them appear in this service, not even Mario RPG, what is that all about?

In my perspective the complaint of a lack of "themes" is really a complaint of a lack of personality in the system. My brother and I look back fondly on how much personality systems like the Wii and 3DS had (think channel chimes) and the Switch by comparison has zero of that charm or personality.

Also, if I can't buy them anymore, It's the only way I can experience the games I missed out on. If these games are officially released I will buy them. But for the sake of conserving our gaming history. Emulation AND "piracy" is the only available option. Like Valve said... it's a "service problem" which you showcase so handsomely in this video.

    TL:DR at bottom
You've only talked about one of the bad parts about Switch Online. What I hate the most is that they're SOMETIMES LOCKING. MOST OF THE GAME. BEHIND A PAYWALL (Nintendo Switch Online), for example, Splatoon 2 and 3. You buy the game for the online part of the game, but oh no! You need to pay to play the game you've already paid for! You don't have that money? Story mode (which, you could argue is enough game, but tell me someone who has bought Splatoon for the story mode and the story mode only. Also, local play doesn't count). What's worse is that the servers suck! Most of the games someone gets disconnected in the start and you have to do the whole process of loading the game and all of that! They really need to fix their servers or make you not pay for Switch Online to play basically the game you've already paid for.
TL:DR: You have to pay for Switch online (on for example Splatoon 2 and 3) for the part of the game you want (which, on Splatoon's case, is most probably the online).

A major issue I have with this business model is that they will inevitably have to close this service one day, and for the next console, even if they keep up the subscription model they will need some way to port over ones game progress. Otherwise these are several games people might have spent HOURS playing that they will no longer be able to access. Services like gamepass give you games you can already purchase separately, so, if you wanted to, you could cancel your subscription and play the game separately. And the game is yours. Even if gamepass ended nothing will happen to that progress. But if switch online gets shut down? All of your games are lost, and all of your progress is lost, with no sign of recovering them

I think nintendo ditched their previous eshop library when they saw the demand from fans for ports and probably thought "yeah this should be an easy way to make bank with a subscription service". And then proceeded to create a service with the slowest god damn updates known to man.
might partially be because they want ppl to keep paying for as long as possible, so they could be intentionally not porting the games everyone want. also they're probably saving them for "Definitive Edition" re-releases which make more money.

I have a good idea for nintendo
How about they remove the online service entirely and make online without a paywall but instead
A new service can be created
The retro service you pay 10-20 bucks monthly to play different old game systems
Ranging from the NES to the Nintendo 64.
And they can bust it with a pro version of the same service but at a higher price and include more games! And more emulators like
    DS, GameCube
All that for whatever they'll make us pay 50 bucks
But for a massive pack they can make us pay for Wii, Wii U and 3DS for a higher price
So here is what I think what nintendo should do.
This can be a great move as it may boost their sales and make them profit more! Than the shit they are doing and they'll also make us happy without their current service.

It does not give any option to do absolutely anything about the screen (I can't play on either handheld or on tv for more than 10 minutes before getting motion sickness, eye strain or sharp headaches), I have found absolutely no way to fix it. At this point getting an actual n64/gc/wii seems like a better investment than trying to play those same games on the Switch.

It's crazy how quickly things closed, for example there's a Switch in the bedroom on Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon on 3DS and there are Breath of the Wild 3DS themes and everything. I believe Just Dance 2019 was on Wii U also. These eshops should have stayed open another 5-10 years. It makes no sense from a financial perspective either. Nintendo still has to have Wii U/3DS servers so people can download all the purchased games and DLC. The big difference is Nintendo can't make money selling games on those older eshops. I've responded by modding my Wii U and 3DS, they have very impressive libraries especially with rom injections and virtual console emulation.
The biggest reason I see for Nintendo closing is they don't want competition with their newer services/consoles

The thing that mainly pisses me off about online isn't emulation but the fact that now Nintendo has jumped on the "you have to pay even more money for games you already own" train. I bought Splatoon 2 when I first got my Switch when it first came out, I liked it but I never usually play games for more than a week or two before I get bored and don't play it for a while- I basically gave up on the Switch after I got a notification saying that, to play the game I paid like 50 bucks for that I was previously able to ACTUALLY PLAY, I would have to pay for a stupid subscription. Splatoon is the only online game I really care about on the Switch so I'm not paying that just to play Splatoon for a couple days then get bored. I paid full price for a game that was basically taken away from me. I can't WAIT until the Switch can be emulated and something like Pretendo shows up for it so I can actually play my game.
