  • Get rid of the problematic factory VGT turbo and replace it with a fixed geometry turbo charger. In this video I am using a kit from Smeding Diesel, retails for $1500US. We also added a couple extra goodies. This kit should work for all 2007.5 - 2018 6.7 cummins. Truck had codes P2262 and P226B in case you were wondering.

      I actually bought a silicone fleece oil drain but it doesn’t fit with the aftermarket turbo so I had to get the metal one

    The oil drain can't be upgraded to an AN fitting and line can it? I've never seen them in person.

    Sounds like what we do. Any 6.7 that needs a turbo actuator or a new turbo we do a non vgt kit. Been installing a lot of the bd iron horn kits myself. Had good luck with them so far

    Power driven diesel makes the best fitting oil drain fixture that has a cap on it to hammer it in

    Did you end up needing to connect the exhaust back pressure sensor?

    What do you do with the speed sensor? When it doesn’t see the actuator does it go into limp mode?

    For the oil drain I’ve took hose removal pliers (the round ends ) and clamp it on the drain, then hit it with a hammer. It marred it up some but I was able to get it out

    I thought that the replacement VGT turbo would do fine for at least another 10 years, but it only lasted 6 weeks (just under 1K miles) and took a dump, I will be getting the Non-VGT set up on Monday, those clips at the back top and bottom can be worked off instead of pulling with a rachet strap, I will pull the turbo out before I take out the exhaust manifold, and I did get a longer oil drain tube for the 3rd GEN, I was hoping to use that Fleece VGT drain tube, but you do what you gotta do.

    I just added a BD Exhaust manifold with the BD Iron horn, BD calls for 39 ft lbs on the bolts. Your right the Oil drain tube is a PITA. I went through the Wheel well and it made it a lot easier to get to the back 2 turbo bolts.

    Hey nice video, someone on CF directed me here and I'm glad I watched. I was prepared for a fight with the oil drain... Now I really know what I'm in for! You might hear me cursing from Okotoks, AB next week...
    The coolant lines... You referred to the top one as the feed, and the lower as the drain... Do you know if this is the case, or were you just using good logic? The reason I ask, is I'm fixed vane swapping to a Garrett BB with coolant lines. As I understand it, the upper coolant line is the RETURN, and the lower is the FEED. The reason I think this, is because the upper line plumbs into the hard line that runs under the manifold and RETURNS to the water pump inlet near the oil filter. Then naturally, that only leaves that lower line as the coolant supply. Did that make sense, or am I way off? Do you have a reliable way to verify? Another reason I think that hard line is the return is because when you follow it upward I comes from the heater core, and then you see the other heater core line next to it which comes from the head... And I ASSUME the head SUPPLIES the heater core. That was a long comment, sorry!

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha I’ll listen for you. And I just assumed it goes in the top and out the bottom like the oil does however I could be completely wrong. What you said makes a lot of sense.

    I have the dreaded “turbo module” codes on my 4th gen, if it actually needs a whole new turbo, I think I’d rather go this route, because it wouldn’t be much more than a new factory turbo. Mine isn’t deleted yet, so I’d have to get a delete kit, and I live in the us, so deletes are harder to get. Is there a Canadian company out there that would send a full delete kit with the tuner pre tuned to a fixed geometry turbo such as an s366?

    • @darkirondiesel

      Check the description. You can get the efi live tuner with non vgt tunes from dirty diesel customs. They will ship it to you. Get ccs tunes and use DARKIRON5 for 5% off. You will have to order the exhaust from the other link I have there, diesel dudes will ship exhaust to you

    great vid, I appreciate the honesty in pointing out the issues that one might encounter. When going to a non-vgt turbo don't you lose the engine braking function?

    • @npp3cc
      @npp3cc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You lose the exhaust brake but also get lower egts, lower drive pressure, more response, more power, 1-2 mpg more

    • @rollinwiththefergs8117
      @rollinwiththefergs8117 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      However for 920 you can do the bd exhaust brake that runs off an actuator and directly plugs in and restores it so total 3000 for a system that is much more reliable

  • @Cumminscowboy666
    @Cumminscowboy666 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m surprised there’s no coolant feed line for the turbo. You’d think they’d want coolant flowing to cool it down too. I get oil does that as well as lube but extra cooling is nice

    • @kdbl007
      @kdbl007 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oil only needed for a non VGT turbo….the vgt system is what requires coolant

    • @noHandle1776
      @noHandle1776 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The coolant going to a VGT is to cool the actuator assembly. Tue turbo is cooled and lubes by oil. No VGT, no coolant.

      I mean... a vast majority of folks dont use it. Also the BD inline EB not only ties into the factory button and functions but its a superior EB to the VGT. $1500 fixed kit + $1000 BD EV is still less than a "good" crappy VGT.

      @Dark Iron Diesel probably about 3 to 4 months. I went with there s464/1.00 2nd gen swap with billet wheel and upgraded bearing. It's an absolute blast to drive paired up with a g56 transmission. I have nothing but good things to say about Smeding also. Everytime I had a question they answered it. With the setup I have at about 2k rpm it starts to spool and is gone. When the boost hits it hits hard. I love the fact that it's a very reliable setup not having to worry about vgt failure and honesty I thought I would miss my exhaust brake but I don't. Oh and the truck sounds like a Peterbilt now 😆
