Hello my dear. More important four chair to becoming comfortable is four take care the food. Please my dear. I am worry four you become eat too muchly. Please improve.
Furniture flipping can be REALLY lucrative. I was talking to a dude that started out in 2004 with a junk hauling company. After a year, he made his first $10k on vintage furniture. He now has 3 upscale vintage furniture stores and nets about a million a year. He gave me a junk 1960s Herman Miller desk and fiberglass chair a few years back. I sold the chair for $250.
today I picked up an Aeron. I know you said watch out for the gears, but this chair was immaculate (aside from the dust) and came with the adjustable add-ons and the lumbar pillow. checked under the chair, manufactured in 1999. I paid 60 dollars.
Hello there! I work for a Herman Miller Dealer and I honestly learn more with your video than with our training videos. Such a good job showing off the chair and explaining the mechanisms!
Two years old and still helping us dummies with this awesome chair. Thank you so much! I'm gonna leave a helpful comment below for anyone still reading, and this will address the point of chair smell and how to remove it. Yes, it is curry, and yes, it is one of the toughest household smells to deal with, but also YES, I managed to get rid of it. The chair: 2017 Aeron, fully loaded. I ended up buying a 6 year old Aeron from an Indian gent in my area, and the chair did indeed come with that lovely smell of cardamom (and more haha!). Condition: As the chair is cosmetically in very good condition, I first gave it a nice wipe down with a mild detergent (all over, including the seat and back). I actually used my bike cleaner here, but dish soap dissolved in water would do just as well I assume. Went in with nylon brushes to dust it off in every nook and cranny, and basically got it as clean as possible and fit to roll around my home office. Scent removal: First, chucked the chair out on the balcony. That was gonna be its home for the next 5-6 days. Then, I took some salad-grade white vinegar, into a sprayer bottle, and proceeded to spray it down with vinegar twice or 3 times every day, focusing specifically on the seat and back, making sure the weave fabric is nice and soaked (but not dripping!). I would do this, let the chair dry outside, then go back and repeat, rubbing it down with a clean rag every time. On day 3, I also decided to sprinkle it with baking soda, as it is known for it's smell absorbing properties, just as vinegar is known for breaking down fat molecules that hold the scent. For the next 2-3 days, I went back to the vinegar treatment. Result: In total, this took about 5-6 days, but now the chair is back inside, and about 95% scent-free. I can still smell a little bit when I really stick my nose into it, but definitely cannot smell anything in the house or even just sitting in the chair and moving around. I assume another few rounds of this white vinegar treatment would completely remove any residual scent. Conclusion: Don't be too afraid of household smells. If the chair isn't stained, if it's been well looked after and just smells of some curry, chances are you can remove it. White vinegar and baking soda do wonders. Once you are done with these, you can use Fabreeze or something similar just to give it a nice fresh scent. Don't rely on fresheners to actually clean it, use the simple stuff that's been proven over decades. White vinegar, baking soda... amazing results.
The feature you talk about at 4:20 is intended for people who are writing/drawing on a piece of paper. If you're anything along the lines of an engineer/mathematician or artist this feature can be extremely useful, and is definitely a factor which should be taken into consideration when buying an office chair.
I think people are getting it wrong, my mom has a lift chair to help get up and go to the bathroom, Since he says its a rare feature, I bet its for older people, to help them get out of the chair. That my bet.
Got a Herman miller Aeron for free! After a new apartment building by my university was done being build, the construction workers just left all their chairs (HM Aeron) out on the sidewalk with signs to take for free!
Bro, you're holding a stereo recorder sideways. So you're speaking into one microphone, and it causes the audio to drop in and out. Great video, if you can always see the face of your recorder then it will record stereo and the audio we here will be perfect. Cheers.
Thanks for the tip! I've never used this module (always used the XLR option on the H5 with my other mic), so good to know how to use it for the future!
This channel just came out of nowhere... The video quality, presentation and depth of substantive info you provide is top-notch - I love that you get right to the point and have minimal fluff/filler. There's nothing worse when an otherwise good vid overdoes it with unnecessary memes and transitions thrown in seemingly every 10 seconds... Keep up the good work, I see big things for your channel in the future!
Managed to get one for completely free today (: The hospital I work at was about to throw it away and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. I took it home and was soo excited when I looked at the bottom of the chair and read "Herman Miller". I want to sell it soo bad bc who doesn't love free money. I think I plan on keeping it though, my back will thank me over the years!
EDIT: 1/21/22 I bought the forward tilt parts for $20 and installed in an hour or two; have been using it for a couple months now. Absolute gamechanger for me. I think this will be more relative if you're tallish or taller (I'm about 5'11"). It is virtually impossible to sit upright in this chair without forward tilt at my height, and I love this chair so much now. So my recommendation is to seriously consider trying to add the forward tilt if you find this chair too loungy / laid back. Original: Here to say that I just got my first used herman miller, and not having the forward tilt is feeling like a deal breaker for me. I'm going to give it a week or so before I go out and buy the add-on parts, but it just feels a bit too relaxed / inattentive for me. I prefer sitting up relatively straight and have some distance from my monitor ; it feels like I'm just too far back in this and like it encourages a hunch when I need to look at things more closely.
Just bought my first refurbished Aeron from Crandall Office Furniture today. Decided to get the tilt feature and will let you know how how I like it. Added it on because of your comment and I am 6'3".
I was extremely lucky to pick up this chair for free! It's been a blessing as a full time student and video editor. My neighbor was renovating their home before moving and needed to get ride of their furniture. They invited me to grab anything I wanted for free and I snagged this chare the second I saw it.
I just found your channel after watching a gamers nexus video about chairs. This is one of the rare times where the YT algo recommended someone awesome. I’m binging your content now and it’s awesome. Keep up the good work my dude!
It took me 8 years into my Aeron ownership to start using the forward-tilt. I still use it daily, but what changed me was getting a correct height desk, able to flat foot the floor, and also adding a footrest (in addition to being able to flat foot), and the forward tilt started to make sense with better support on the floor. The forward tilt is also nice in situations where you briefly need to sit on the edge of the chair, more comfortable with the forward angle not having the chair bite into your thigh.
I liked this video and watched the entire thing. Having a 64 year involvement with Herman Miller I got an Aeron chair when they first came out in the 1990s. I used it every day until I got a fully loaded brand new one a few weeks ago. I really like the new lumbar support, which is different than the one in this video. Other than the lumbar and the looks, the older Aerons are nearly as good as the new ones. Over the years I have found four issues with these chairs that buyers of used Aerons should consider. While they still worked fine, after many years my leather armrests wore through and looked bad. The rubber armrests will probably last longer but be less comfortable. Over time the bottom seat cushion can stretch out. So make sure to test used chairs to make sure it is still tight. After many years I replaced my seat cushion and it made the chair feel like new. My shock went bad and wouldn't adjust, but I just keep it at the same height so it didn't matter. Some chairs have carpet casters. If the chair doesn't but you have carpet you will have to replace the casters. Regarding removing chair odor. I have never done this but if I had the problem I would remove the bottom and back cushions and wash them with dish soap and hot water in a concrete mixing container. I would clean the base with a cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
That's a good suggestion, I never thought hot water would be a good idea since it may shrink the pellicle, but now that I think about it, with the wear of a 20yr old chair, maybe the fabric needs to be shrunken from the years of stretching!
My fully loaded Aeron chair came today. OMG I so love it. I would buy this again. Though I don't think I will need another for 20 years. I'd love to buy my daughter one. I'm 65 years old and I'm in heaven. I so love it. Super duper comfortable. Built like SUV. Great Quality!! I bought mine from Business Interiors. Brokers where you get it brand new, full warranty for about $800 cheaper. I live in Canada and mine cost me including taxes and delivery $1417.00 with a discount code. It sells for $1249.99 I ordered it Tuesday and it came Friday.
I love these chairs. I bought my first Aeron about 12 years ago for $250 used but in mint cond. I recently bought another Aeron (no rips, fully functional with lock tilt & C size) for $15 from a thrift store. There were actually two chairs for sale, but another guy bought the other at the same time. He knew what he was buying and so we both were ticked pink with our find. To clean an Aeron chair try bleach and warm water to disinfect and get rid of odors. I do think the tilt lock is very useful if u plan on sitting in front of a computer. I don't find the front tilt useful. I also bought a mint condition Herman Miller Equa in Gray for $15 at another thrift store. Good buys to be had.
I just bought my first Herman Miller Aeron yesterday using these tips! I ended up with a classic b size chair for $620 Canadian with tax. The only complaint that I have for the chair is that it makes my thighs a little sore, but that sensation quickly passes (I think this is due to my body getting use to it). Overall I'm really happy with the purchase!
Never heard of Herman miller, and I don’t know why it’s in my youtube front page, and I don’t know why I watched the whole video. But holy cow, I watched this video 8 oclock this morning and checked my local craiglist searching for herman miller, boom, there is one on sale for 60 dollars 5 minutes drive away from where I live. Go pick it up, its a fully loaded chair, it’s in my garage and Im cleaning it. It’s only 3 years old, the guy said he picked it up from a large company back then. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you so much for this guide. Getting a good chair has been a big point for me the past couple of years because I have spent so much of that time sitting at a desk. I have had to use everything from bar stools to basic mid-century office chairs to gaming chairs to sit at my desk and its been a pain in many ways. I was really wanting a Herman Miller but couldn't afford the price the past few years. Today I was able to buy a fully-optioned, fully-functional Mirra 1 still in warranty for $200. It has a few scuffs here and there and wasn't necessarily the color I wanted, but even just sitting in this chair today has made me realize how much I was missing out on and how much pain I could have been avoiding. It certainly helps that the chair looks amazing as well. It's an incredible chair with a fantastic build quality and I'm so excited to own it! Subscribed for sure Edit: I found the chair by searching "chair" on Facebook marketplace locally. I found a listing that had a picture I thought looked like a Mirra. The title read something like "Work from home? Great Ergonomic office chair!" or some shit like that. I read the description and it claimed the chair was a Modway Reverb, though assuming the pictures were correct, I knew it wasn't after seeing the Herman Miller logo on the back in one of the pictures. The Modway Reverb is a similar chair in style but not near the same quality. I guess i just got lucky here, but like you said, sometimes people don't know or care about what they have and just want it gone. She lived about 15 minutes away and I was able to pick it up an hour and a half after finding it. So happy to have found this chair.
@@Ahnestly You're the man. Been using this chair for a few days and it literally has alleviated so much back and leg pain I used to get. I'm still so glad I was able to find one for an affordable price and I can enjoy it even more knowing there isn't any $200 new chair on the market that is even close to this.

You should probably pin the comment. Hopefully I can use these tips in the future but these chairs seem much more rare where I live (Germany) than in the States.
I thought I did pin it! But sorry to hear they’re more rare in Germany. Btw I’ve always wanted to visit Germany and put my German language studies to use. Oder ich werde alle mein Deutsch furgessen. (I probably butchered that so bad LOL)
@@Ahnestly You almost got it! "Oder ich werde all mein Deutsch vergessen" Respect for learning German. It's a very hard language to pick up when you aren't living here and even then I know people living for decades here and still get a lot of "Der, Die, Das" wrong. Not impossible though! If you visit then I'd recommend avoiding Berlin. It's pretty boring, not very pretty and it's culturally pretty different from the rest of the country (in a not good way) .
Checking every 15 minutes for the search of a chair in fb marketplace, Craigslist, and offer up. Just got the fully loaded w. posture fit for $35 sitting in my sedan rn. Thanks for chair Ahn!
This is the video I wanted to see for years! Thank you very much! Finally, all my questions are answered in a structured, experienced, and eloquent manner.
I just bought an Aeron and I noticed something very important I want to share. The size, A,B,C matters quite a bit it seems. I'm 6'1'' 175lbs, and I NEEDED a size C. In some reviews, I see people with their shoulders ABOVE the top of the backrest. The top of my shoulders are BELOW the top of the backrest with my C. This leads me to believe they are in a size B when they should be in a C. I think this is also what leads people to say the seat rim bothers the back of their legs. Another note is I have slim legs and I noticed there is not much space between my thighs and the rim of the seat. If I had bigger thighs, I can see this may be an issue, however for my size it cradles me perfectly. I can even cross my legs or put one foot up on the lip with no discomfort. The posture fit was something that needed to be dialed in (like everything on the Aeron) and it now feels great after I dialed in the tilt tension as well. Tilt tension I think may be the most important thing to getting the cloud like feel on the Aeron. It is based off your weight, which leads me to believe a larger person using a size B will have a less than optimal experience. In converse, my much smaller girlfriend cannot comfortably engage the lean on the size C. One last thing, on the Aeron the forward tilt feature is dope if you are a gamer that likes to lean forward on your keyboard and mouse. The Aeron follows me upright and forward and then all the way back when I die and stretch. The tilt tension adjust is truly the key to this chairs comfort. I have it dialed in to feel like a cloud and I am truly impressed. TLDR: The size of the Aeron seems to matter quite a bit, and I think more people need a size C than realize. I also think wider people may find something like the Embody more comfy due to the width of the size C Aeron being narrow. Hope this helps you fellow chair hunters!
I watched this video two years ago and went out and bought two fully loaded newish chairs in Ireland for 550 euros each. I spend a lot of time in Scotland these days and I just saw a pre 2005 fully loaded chair on Facebook marketplace for 35 pounds! I messaged the seller and he said that someone had bought it and was calling to collect it that evening. I got a message next morning to say that the buyer hadn’t shown up. So I straight over and bought it. I didn’t even haggle like I usually do. 😆. There was no mention of Herman Miller in the ad so the seller didn’t know what he had. I asked where he got it and it had been “borrowed” from an office during lockdown. This video really helped me out. Sweet deal!!
Thanks for the video! Followed all your instructions and got myself a fully loaded 2016 model for 460 USD. Love the chair and it has really changed my home office setup game.
Just picked one up for £5... No arm rests and needs a new Gas Cylinder buuuuttt you know what, still the best chair I've ever had. Facebook Marketplace, you blow my mind! Thanks for the tips, took me 3 days of checking. I'm Based in the UK.
Thanks for this video! It got me lurking on CL for the past week and today I picked up a 2007 size C with all the bells and whistles (including leather arms!) for $250. Your video made me more confident about buying a used Aeron and I even did the sniff test! My back will be forever grateful to you. Cheers!
I brought this Aeron chair brand new 26 years ago and it was $$$$$. However it was one of best investment as I still seat on it everyday for eight hours a day. Still function or look perfectly as if it is new. Btw, there were wheels option for hardwood or carpet. They have different size as well.
Correct. Most chairs you buy used have the standard wheels - I only got different wheels when I bought it from someone who customized the chair and bought it new. Didn't think it was worth mentioning for an additional 2-3 minutes (same with leather arms and patterned mesh!)
definitely swap the wheels on these chairs if you're on a hardwood floor. There's lots of options but get the ones that look like rollerblades wheels. Otherwise you'll shred your hardwoods.
@@Ahnestly You know what, I never knew an indepth review of chairs is something that I need in mylife. I quickly search for this chair in my local marketplace and sadly found out that it cost 16 millions IDR (about 1000 usd) at my local currency. Guess I'll make do with my current swivel chair.
@@Ahnestly Thats the cheapest used price from the online retailer price. The fact that they imported one from US might be why this niche product is even more niche here. And as far as I search with generic chair keywords, still produced 0 result. These kind of chair might be pilled as my longtime wishlist for now, after I settled with my life and has no other necessity to fulfill (house mortgage, etc)
Same but I was actually after a new chair. Protip 1: don't be afraid of custom or boutique shops. They offer a way better product for the same price. Herman Miller's chairs are meh. Protip 2 : you bought the wrong mic.
21:50 - “Should I buy used on eBay” - actually *yes*, if it’s local pickup! There’s a new (or like new?) one nearby where I’m at in Daly City going for $950 listed as local pick up with payment being “cash on pick up”. In that case, you can pay once you’ve had the opportunity to inspect it first. Either way, awesome review and great to have so much detailed info on what to look for when negotiating.
You nailed it friend! After watching this very video, I searched a local analog of Craigslist and found BMA Axia 24/7 Plus for $150. One of the greatest pieces of advice I've ever heard, which could be used for many types of purchases!

Greetings Dan just a quick question as you sit in a Herman Miller AERON, you feel that the hydraulics gives a little about an inch to two inches, of sinking , is that normal? Thanks for your time
@@dennistitus1191 I just purchased one recently and there is a slight give in both the mesh and hydraulics but I wouldn't say more than 1/2 inch to an inch total after I sit. Much like a car would when you get into it. It doesn't continue to sink once my full weight is on the chair. This is in a 2007 Size B.
The office I work at has the older chairs with the arm gears. I've sat in that chair for hours upon end for 5 yrs, and let me tell you... still an excellent seat and lumbar support.
i watched this video so many times over the past year, and today i finally got my 3rd hand aeron. thanks to your video i was confident in my used purchase. one day ill be rich enough to buy it brand new :p
Mirra v1 or v2? how does the mirra compare to the aeron, heard some people say the mirra is the improved aeron. looking forward to buying a refurbished mirra for 450€, cant get any cheaper than this here in germany
@@chesterpuffington8368 I used to have an aeron at work, and I got a pair of Mirras (I think 2's) that used to be in a hotel for $100. I think I probably like the aeron better, primarily because its tilt lock has like 8 or 9 positions where the Mirra only has 3. If you buy one of the hotel Mirras they don't have the tilt lock, but you can buy the levers for $30 on ebay and just pop a cap off the side and jam it in and it works. as far as comfort I'd say the Mirra and the Aeron are at least comparable, depends on if you really need the mesh back or not.
How do you like the Setu vs the Aeron? I currently have the Aeron, but would like to try a simpler looking chair. I'm a little hesitant to go with the Setu since I'm unsure if it'll be good on my back if I work for 8hrs+
For that forward leaning lever, looks like it relates to Aeron's origins when was being designed as a orthopedic chair for elderly. Since many Elderly have issues standing up from a sitting position, the chair being able to lean forward like that helps them "lift up".
So I've heard that as well, but the Herman Miller rep told me it was more for artists and people who prefer to lean forward to remove pressure off their backs!
All fairly solid advice! Mic noise aside, this guy knows Aerons and I’ve done this exactly as he’s describing for dozens of chairs. It works. Individual parts can also be purchased to repair damaged chairs as well. Buying a chair with no back and finding a back on its own could save you hundreds. Next time... Steelcase chairs? Let me know if you want help making that video!
I appreciate the kind comment! See follow up vid: th-cam.com/video/KiLOma9LeqU/w-d-xo.html I don't have a lot of experience with Steelcase chairs, since part of the draw with the Aerons was the "sellability" of it.
It is enormously helpful for those of us with low back issues. I have moderate to severe arthritis in my lumbar spine and can only sit for about an hour if my chair doesn’t have the seat pan tilt. I use a Steelcase Criterion right now with seat pan tilt and it’s pretty good, but I do prefer the Aeron.
Great video. I helped a friend, who was a professional recycler break down an office building. He gave me one of the Aeron chairs for helping out. I was not expecting that, I was just helping out. One thing about these chairs: You can buy replacement parts. Yes, when something breaks, you can fix it. That mesh, which does wear out, can be replaced. About $200. From what I can tell, all of the parts on that chair can be purchased and replaced. Personally, I get sad when I have to throw a piece of furniture like this away. Even if it was only $100 new, its just waste. I love the "smell the chair". My chair is at least 20 years old. 10 years by me. Old man ass in chair - but, everybody loves their own brand. :)
i've been on a look out for an Aeron for couple of years now but hard to find a decent price here in Finland. Currently using Yrjö Kukkapuro Fysio 455F Kashmir wool black from the 1980's and still one of the best chairs for me. Bought it for 50€ from Yrjö Kukkapuro's atelier when Avarte stopped making these. Been scouting functional design for years and i totally get your ethics for making finidings.
holy... this have got to be the most informative video for buying a used Aeron chair. I wanted to buy a refurbished or used Aeron and this video gave me a lot of things to look out for. Thank you.
That’s what the government wants, don’t trust him, he’s an alleged war criminal and the government wants to catch him doing a petty crime and BOOM life in prison
Forward tilt is the one mechanism I'm focused on getting. It alleviates pressure on my lower back and opens up the hips. I've also heard pregnant women also benefit from this adjustment modification.
I would imagine seniors who need a little help getting up would appreciate that mechanism too. Likely why you've never used it is you're still young! Great overview, thanks.
I live in latin america so when I saw this video when it came out a couple of months ago I had no hope of getting an used one for cheap. I tried from time to time to find one in facebook marketplace (is the most popular platform for used stuff), finally found one same as yours, full loaded in black just for 430usd. The chair was made in 2011 and looks and work perfectly, I'm so happy thank you for the video.
Thanks for all the info! Knew exactly what to look for when getting one used and ended up getting a fully loaded, posturefit, post 2006 model for $370. Not ridiculously cheap, but definitely a great deal.
So I was in the market for an Aeron when I came across your review and ended up subscribing :) I followed your formula of checking CL and Facebook ads in my area on a daily basis but all chairs were $400+. Then one day I’m driving to visit my brother and when I pull up to the intersection there is a guy begging for spare change sitting on an Aeron! We got to talking and I ended up buying it from him for $50. It’s in perfect condition, everything works, the sticker says it’s from 2013 but it looks brand new. It has all the options you show here in your video except it’s charcoal color. Thanks to your video I knew what I was looking for and kept my eyes open. It payed off big!
This review was SO SO helpful, I might buy a non aeron in the meantime to replace my IKEA chair, but definitely using your tips will be looking for an Aeron.
Niceeee! This way, you can try to find the best deal possible. Lot of folks are strapped for time so often end up buying one that’s higher in price! The lack of desperation is strong with this one....lol
I think every new TH-camrs dream is to have a Leeroy Jenkins comment on their video. #dreamfulfilled lol. I don't vape, but if I did, I'd totally buy a vape this size.
@@Ahnestly If you're considering it, don't vape, smoke real cigarettes. You're still getting cancer but at least you get the real deal. If I'm honest avoid both. Cigs aren't cheap .
Great guide. Been looking for one for awhile now and just picked up a fully loaded aeron for $250 on facebook marketplace. It was an hour drive but so worth it, this thing is amazing...
Recapping the checklist for purchasing a used Aeron Chair (7&8 were added) 1. Make sure it has Tabs instead of gears behind arms (to be sure it's not a super old model) 2. check hydraulics by raising set up and lowering all the way. should be pretty smooth to the bottom. 3. check if any frays on the seat (deal breaker) or top of the back (negotiate) 4. Take foam lumbar out to check for tears and if the plastic is broken off 5. smell the chair. strong smells are hard to remove. 6. check for squeaks by sitting and allow the back to go back and forth 7. Adjust the armrests up and down. Sometimes these can get stuck and are a pain to fix. 8. Sit in chair and roll back and forth. side to side. spin around in either direction. Wee!
I scored a $90 Aeron this week (my first one!) from a used furniture rental shop nearby. It was marked $180 -50%. I won't lie, it was FILTHY. But other than needing a good washing the only issue is that I don't have the top tilt cover. It does not have the front tilt or posture fit, but did come with the standard lumbar and rear tilt lock. The casters are a bit noisy so I invested in some 'rollerblade' type casters off Amazon that should arrive today to upgrade. Oh, I thought the gas lift was bad since the chair kept sinking when I sat down and then I came across a video that showed the set screw for the height adjustment. 3/4 turn on the screw and it's perfect. Really can't believe I got this chair for $90!!! After the new casters and the tilt cover I'll be in for less than $200 total and a couple hours to take off the back and seat and give them a real good cleaning along with wiping down the entire frame. Really can't beat it!
Man you are very thorough and I really get alot from your reviews. I have become obsessed with expensive chairs my wife says and a crazy story I wanted to tell ya is the day I watched your aeron buying guide I thought yeah that would be nice but I live in grants pass oregon and there isn't alot of people here that would shell out 1300 for anything let alone a chair. But that day I watched your aeron video I went to check out 2 aeron lookalikes I thought since the pics were not very revealing . Turns out they were size b Herman Miller fully loaded aerons in perfect condition. The owner said 50 bucks for the 2 of em? So of course I did him the favor of making that purchase. Haha. Then a week Later a company was going out of business and I saw they had a pic of a steelcase amia. Got that for 25 bucks perfect condition. And today I found by just walking by a big 5 store another aeron in the back of a truck. I waited for the owner to come out and I asked if he's selling it. 50 bucks he says. Yeah I got 3 aerons and an amia for 125 dollars. Probably cheaper than it takes the company to make these chairs. But I always thought watching your video set these chances in motion so thank you for inadvertently making me alot of money and a couple of sweet personal chairs
It is near to impossible to find a second hand chair (Herman Miller Aeron) in my country, yes I checked the 2nd hand market of entire country :P Seems like I'm stuck with spending the full amount :(
Few years ago a friend of mine managed to procure a Herman Miller from a French Expat in Delhi. Try Facebook cuz these guys won't post on Quikr or OLX. Otherwise get one from Ikea Hyderabad, their chairs are great for the price...much better than most of the brands available in India. Also in local markets in Delhi, there are few guys who can build chairs as per your requirement.
Great video. Broke down everything structurally. The video slider sections helps a lot. Keep posting videos. They are very informative and helpful for users like me
The PostureFit isn’t lumbar support, it’s posture support with passive lumbar support. Which is much more beneficial. I would always recommend PostureFit to everyone UNLESS they specifically have issues in their lumbar region in which case I’d recommend the direct lumbar support.
I have also installed a posture fit, you don’t actually need to break any mesh to install it at all, the piece that needs to pass through can get between the mesh, it may widen that area slightly but it does not break the mesh, if you break the mesh you will get laddering and will need to replace the back of your chair. I’m aware all the videos on TH-cam recommend pushing a screwdriver through the mesh but this isn’t right and will cause actual damage. Done right you can reverse the install at anytime without any lasting change.
Very good video, very informative. I learned everything about these chairs through hard research and buying them over the years, I certainly could have done with this when I first started looking at these amazing chairs. 👍🏻
About 12 years ago my wife's old company was moving office buildings and was selling the old office chairs for $50. We picked one up and I only recently realized the quality of the chair. My Aeron was made in August of 1998. I replaced the arm pads, back pad, and the hydraulic/pneumatic piston on it and it was going strong until the bolt in one of the adjustable arms snapped. I was going to toss the chair and buy something else when I found the replacement part was between $50-80. After I learned what I have I'm not tossing this thing out anytime soon. I mean my total investment in this chair is around $200, but the thing is still going strong and for being over 22 years old that's really impressive. I wish I knew back when we bought it what this thing was worth; I would have purchased several more at $50 a pop. With COVID my wife is working from home way more and we are looking to build out a 2nd office space for her; hopefully the tips in your video will help me pickup another of these chairs on the cheap (probably never as cheap as the first). Thanks!
I watched this video yesterday while researching chairs since my 16 year old chair was sinking. I ended up with a Herman Miller Aeron B posture fit with fully adjustable arms and tabs (not gears) for $250 in NYC with a photo of a sticker that it was ordered from a local office supply store. It's in great condition. I found it after a Facebook marketplace search, about 3 minutes after it was posted. They didn't post photos of the Herman Miller manufacturing sticker, which is 2014 with an FO date that starts with my birthdate (month and day). I registered for the warranty online. Thanks for all the tips. I almost didn't buy it because I didn't know the weave pattern could be customized and it didn't look like the normal weave pattern.
First of all, seriously awesome name. Second, what a find! The custom mesh means it was likely a personal chair, not an office one! So glad this helped you!!
Wait a minute, my shitty hand-me-down desk chair my parents had in their garage is actually a fully loaded Herman Miller Aeron that I could sell for $600? Dope!
TH-cam just recommended this - definitely still not going to be able to buy a chair like this haha but…it’s still a great video! Some people commenting about how it’s annoying with him tapping the chair and the audio dropping, it’s really not that deep. You can still hear what he’s saying. Also, the content is FREE. He’s giving us FREE advice and it’s pretty decent advice. Also, also…it’s TH-cam. Not a big budget TV network.
Dang I really appreciate the kind words! I've upped my game a lot since this video, but when I made this video, I was testing a new format since I didn't have the equipment or experience to move around physically while making a video! It is REALLY kind of you to sit in my shoes and see things from my perspective...it means a LOT and I hope you continue to be this kind of person to others!!!
I am a 58 year old japanese businessman, we had over 35 of those in one of my companys. Personally I do not like them, and many others complained too. While they are not bad chairs , they are not for everyone. It is a hyped product that seems to be in trend as Herman Millers marketing department is doing a great job paying reviewers on platforms like youtube. There are other alternatives and better ones, also the pricepoint is not very charming for most people. The section where the accessoires are shown only proofs it as the rating for lowerback support got a terrible rating. I think those chairs got a fair pricepoint at around 300 or lower, anything above is not worth it even less so the 1000+ or the around 650 for refurbished chairs.
Herman Miller doesn't pay reviewers on TH-cam, so think you're misinformed on that point. There are other chairs that are in the $500+ new, and I would gladly pay that price for a new herman miller, but $1,000+ is crazy
I got mine for 100 bucks off of craigslist, size C but it missed an armrest (I have the armrest detached just need to find a way to fix it) best investment ever
this was so well-informed! thank you for being so thorough and straight to the point. was also so well-organized and edited. and yes i love that search general tip!! its worked for me in terms of buying other things :) i'm a ballet dancer and sometimes people sell expensive leos for waaay cheap just because they don't realize what they have! i didn't expect this to apply to office chairs though! i'll def'n check out my local buy-and-sell for sure. subscribed :)
I bought my first used Aeron over 27 years ago. Last year I swapped out the seat and I still love it. I got mine from a company that sells chairs from movie props.
Almost bought this Herman Miller Aeron used for $150.00 that looks new at a local used office furniture store 3 yrs ago. I ended buying the used Steelcase leap v2 at the same price. I went for comfort. I spend 8 to 10 hours in front of a computer & Im happy w/ the Leap chair. Be sure to test the chairs you're buying. Note: Seating area is larger on Leap, Aeron is more comfy for your behind, Can cross leg sitting on Leap comfortably, Back support adj. better on Aeron. armrest softer on Aeron, Armrest height adj. & movement for Leap.
Interesting- I've been trying to learn about HM Aeron (and all HM chairs). I noticed you did not mention that sitting crosslegged on the HM chairs is about impossible :) Thanks for this very thorough discussion on buying a used HM Aeron chair, subscribed.
That was actually great. I never thought that I would get an Aeron, but you've given me hope as well as some invaluable advice on what to look for. Good work.
I forgot to mention 1 critical thing to check! Under the seat where your thighs will rest, feel under there and you should feel a foam pad. MAKE SURE THIS ISN'T RIPPED, because it often is! If it is, ask for a discount and then pick one up from ebay ($10: www.ebay.com/itm/Seat-Foam-Replacement-for-Herman-Miller-Aeron-Office-Chair-Size-A-B-Or-Size-C/183608593045?hash=item2abfecca95:m:mN48hIps6mbS1KQlr7DyW-g) and replace it yourself! Watch this video if you have no idea what I'm talking about. th-cam.com/video/_5feh1sewsQ/w-d-xo.html
Dexter, are you referring to the remastered chair? If so, I talk about how you won’t find that used for cheap, which is why I didn’t mention it. I also don’t know much about the remastered chairs. As for my chair, it’s only 6 years old.
Thanks for the video. I have always wanted one of these chairs (or two) for home and my home office but wasn't sure how to get a good used one. Now I know! :-)
Sorry if someone already mentioned this (I did search through a lot of comment to check), but the chair does not use hydraulics (that's liquid based). The lift cylinder is pneumatic (air). But thanks for the review. It did provide some helpful detailed on what to look for in used Aerons.
Thank you so much for this extremely informative and useful video. I found a discarded Aeron on the street in NYC, wheeled it back to my apartment, and gave it a good clean. No smell! The only issues are that the seat is a little frayed and it's a size C. I am 5'7" and 150 lbs so I would prefer a B. It has the adjustable arm rests with swivel plus the lean back and lean forward feature. It also has the up/down lumbar support. I am wondering whether to sell as is, or replace the seat and sell, or try to swap for a B size on Craigslist, or keep and use. It is a pre-2005 unit. What are your thoughts?
I got my Herman miller from my parents. they had moved businesses and had some spare office equipment. my sister got an Aeron and so did I because they were the only chairs we had after all these years I didn't know it was such a nice chair. definitely will clean it tomorrow and I'm glad my parents didn't throw it in the dump like they were going to.
Nice review. Thank you. Do you think the "tilt forward" feature may be to help people with lower back issues stand up and exit the chair with less strain on their backs?
Apologies for the audio...one day, I will make a remastered version (haha...get it? remastered...like...remastered Aeron...ha ha ha...)

See my video titled how to buy everything. It was one of my first videos so quality is meh but principle is the same!
@@Ahnestly sound like Tai lopez
today I picked up an Aeron. I know you said watch out for the gears, but this chair was immaculate (aside from the dust) and came with the adjustable add-ons and the lumbar pillow. checked under the chair, manufactured in 1999.
I paid 60 dollars.
The gas lift mechanism could be a China refurb. That is without safety guarantees and can explode. Look up gas lift office chair explodes
Update: traded it with somebody on CR for a size B (the one I originally got was a size A). Actually think this new one is in slightly better shape.
Hello there! I work for a Herman Miller Dealer and I honestly learn more with your video than with our training videos. Such a good job showing off the chair and explaining the mechanisms!
That's some incredibly high praise!! Thank you so much!!! Also, I wish Herman miller would hire me to sell their chairs hahaha
hook me up with a chair with whatever discount you get. il slide cash on top
@nayrey__ Hook up @Ahnestly with a job!
This was awesome!! I should really update this video!
The feature you talk about at 4:20 is intended for people who are writing/drawing on a piece of paper. If you're anything along the lines of an engineer/mathematician or artist this feature can be extremely useful, and is definitely a factor which should be taken into consideration when buying an office chair.
I tried to use that feature but I just couldn't find it useful. I would rather lean forward on the edge of a straight seat.
I'm a software engineer and I use this feature all the time when I'm in the zone and need to grind for short periods of time
I think people are getting it wrong, my mom has a lift chair to help get up and go to the bathroom, Since he says its a rare feature, I bet its for older people, to help them get out of the chair. That my bet.

I'm watching the video, and that audio "effect" (drop in and out) is driving me crazy... XD
Lol sorry man. See the follow up video
The tapping on the chair is really annoying for headphone users with decent bass speakers.
I believe the dropouts are caused from having the limiter or compressor engaged. Great info, thanks.
Thank you, sir!!!
Dude I just found out I have a higher end one that I have used for years and never knew. I just saw my chair and clicked. Seriously thanks
Lol nice!!!
EDIT: 1/21/22
I bought the forward tilt parts for $20 and installed in an hour or two; have been using it for a couple months now.
Original:
Here to say that I just got my first used herman miller, and not having the forward tilt is feeling like a deal breaker for me.
Woot woot! Thanks man!!!
Good Channel, really hope the algo picks you up!!
Thank you!!!!
I’m impressed from accidental discovery to you now becoming an expert about the chair.
Lol, I'm like that - I get realllyyyy into things
This is amazing. Thank you so much for your wisdom, drwisdom!!!
It sells for $1249.99
I ordered it Tuesday and it came Friday.
Nice!!
Nice finds!!
With taxes? Where did you get it? Kindly advise.
Wow...what!?!?! That's amazing! Great find!!!
Subscribed for sure
Edit: I found the chair by searching "chair" on Facebook marketplace locally.
This is an incredible story and super happy for you!!!!

I just bought an Aeron and I noticed something very important I want to
share. The size, A,B,C matters quite a bit it seems. I'm 6'1'' 175lbs,
and I NEEDED a size C. In some reviews, I see people with their
shoulders ABOVE the top of the backrest. The top of my shoulders are
BELOW the top of the backrest with my C. This leads me to believe they
are in a size B when they should be in a C. I think this is also what
leads people to say the seat rim bothers the back of their legs. Another
note is I have slim legs and I noticed there is not much space between
my thighs and the rim of the seat. If I had bigger thighs, I can see
this may be an issue, however for my size it cradles me perfectly. I can
even cross my legs or put one foot up on the lip with no discomfort.
The posture fit was something that needed to be dialed in (like
everything on the Aeron) and it now feels great after I dialed in the
tilt tension as well. Tilt tension I think may be the most important
thing to getting the cloud like feel on the Aeron. It is based off your
weight, which leads me to believe a larger person using a size B will
have a less than optimal experience. In converse, my much smaller
girlfriend cannot comfortably engage the lean on the size C. One last
thing, on the Aeron the forward tilt feature is dope if you are a gamer
that likes to lean forward on your keyboard and mouse. The Aeron follows
me upright and forward and then all the way back when I die and
stretch. The tilt tension adjust is truly the key to this chairs
comfort. I have it dialed in to feel like a cloud and I am truly
impressed. TLDR: The size of the Aeron seems to matter quite a bit, and I
think more people need a size C than realize. I also think wider people
may find something like the Embody more comfy due to the width of the
size C Aeron being narrow. Hope this helps you fellow chair hunters!
Great tips!
Love the chair and it has really changed my home office setup game.
woot woot!!! Congrats!!!
Watched this last night and picked up a brand new Aeron today off Facebook for $50 labeled as "Office Rolly Chair." I owe you one!
LOL Office Rolly Chair!!! Gota love it!!! Great find!!!!
LOL! In your dreams!
Just picked one up for £5... No arm rests and needs a new Gas Cylinder buuuuttt you know what, still the best chair I've ever had. Facebook Marketplace, you blow my mind! Thanks for the tips, took me 3 days of checking. I'm Based in the UK.
Nice find!!!
Thanks for this video!
It got me lurking on CL for the past week and today I picked up a 2007 size C with all the bells and whistles (including leather arms!) for $250. Your video made me more confident about buying a used Aeron and I even did the sniff test! My back will be forever grateful to you. Cheers!
Dayam!!! Awesome!!! Congrats!!!
This is the most comprehensive HM chair buying tips I have ever seen !! Good content
Thank you!

TH-cam : Hey, want to watch a video about chair?
Me : Why not.
Ahnestly: Hey, wanna subscribe to the guy who reviewed the chair?? ;)
:( even used???
That makes a ton of sense! Yes, use local pickup!! And thank you for the kind words! Glad this helped!
You nailed it friend! After watching this very video, I searched a local analog of Craigslist and found BMA Axia 24/7 Plus for $150. One of the greatest pieces of advice I've ever heard, which could be used for many types of purchases!

Nice! This made me happy made me smile, nice!
Great video.....what a chair!!
Greetings Dan just a quick question as you sit in a Herman Miller AERON, you feel that the hydraulics gives a little about an inch to two inches, of sinking , is that normal? Thanks for your time
Great video. Will you give away an Aeron chair at some point?
@@dennistitus1191 I just purchased one recently and there is a slight give in both the mesh and hydraulics but I wouldn't say more than 1/2 inch to an inch total after I sit. Much like a car would when you get into it. It doesn't continue to sink once my full weight is on the chair. This is in a 2007 Size B.
The office I work at has the older chairs with the arm gears. I've sat in that chair for hours upon end for 5 yrs, and let me tell you... still an excellent seat and lumbar support.
Nice!!!
i watched this video so many times over the past year, and today i finally got my 3rd hand aeron. thanks to your video i was confident in my used purchase.
one day ill be rich enough to buy it brand new :p
I’ve bought and sold about 10 over the years. Currently have two mirras and a Setu which are my favorite. It can be pretty good business.
Right!?
Mirra v1 or v2? how does the mirra compare to the aeron, heard some people say the mirra is the improved aeron. looking forward to buying a refurbished mirra for 450€, cant get any cheaper than this here in germany
Like another person asked, is the Mirra 2 a better chair?
Thank you, Dan. I just bought a 2006 Herman Miller Aeron and tried to following your directions re: "what to look out for when choosing used Aeron" 🙂
See follow up vid: th-cam.com/video/KiLOma9LeqU/w-d-xo.html
I don't have a lot of experience with Steelcase chairs, since part of the draw with the Aerons was the "sellability" of it.
the forward lean could be useful for people who have trouble standing up
exactly that is what it is for!! He is young and probably doesn't know that.
No one can review in more detailed way than you on this chair!!
Thanks for the kind words!!!!
i've been on a look out for an Aeron for couple of years now but hard to find a decent price here in Finland.
Thank you.
You're welcome!!
Something about the way that he expresses himself really makes me trust him.
Hey I appreciate that! Stay Ahnest :-D
Subscribed too!
I appreciate your support!!!
Correct!
The chair was made in 2011 and looks and work perfectly, I'm so happy thank you for the video.
woot woot!!! congrats and great find!!

The video is very helpful, just picked up a chair and it was missing a feature so I bargained with the seller and he took off $50
Extremely specialized yet useful knowledge.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Very useful and less specialized than you’d think. These chairs are insanely popular and the used market is hot.
I thought "what a ridiculous vaper... then I realized it's your mic"
I think every new TH-camrs dream is to have a Leeroy Jenkins comment on their video. #dreamfulfilled lol. I don't vape, but if I did, I'd totally buy a vape this size.
I though exactly the same 😁
@@Ahnestly If you're considering it, don't vape, smoke real cigarettes. You're still getting cancer but at least you get the real deal. If I'm honest avoid both. Cigs aren't cheap .

Recapping the checklist for purchasing a used Aeron Chair
(7&8 were added)
1. Make sure it has Tabs instead of gears behind arms (to be sure it's not a super old model)
2. check hydraulics by raising set up and lowering all the way. should be pretty smooth to the bottom.
3. check if any frays on the seat (deal breaker) or top of the back (negotiate)
4. Take foam lumbar out to check for tears and if the plastic is broken off
5. smell the chair. strong smells are hard to remove.
6. check for squeaks by sitting and allow the back to go back and forth
Nice job!!! Way to get your hands dirty!!
Where did u get it from?
Personally, I love the lean forward option on my König+Neurath Jet III. I don't think I can ever have a chair without it again.
It is near to impossible to find a second hand chair (Herman Miller Aeron) in my country, yes I checked the 2nd hand market of entire country :P Seems like I'm stuck with spending the full amount :(
:-( sorry to hear that!
look closely! I tought the same and yesterday bought mine, i live in México

They are very informative and helpful for users like me
I'm glad! This video is 2 yearsish old now! Still going!
👍🏻
Very informative! Thank you!!!
Quite frankly the greatest chair ever created in human computer usage existence.
Thanks!
Damn!!! Great story!!

I got mine for 100 bucks off of craigslist, size C but it missed an armrest (I have the armrest detached just need to find a way to fix it)

Exactly!!
Sell it and don't get hooked to the mad profit you'll make off of it lol :-)
I got my Herman miller from my parents. they had moved businesses and had some spare office equipment. my sister got an Aeron and so did I because they were the only chairs we had after all these years I didn't know it was such a nice chair. definitely will clean it tomorrow and I'm glad my parents didn't throw it in the dump like they were going to.
Lol! That would have been someones $50 lucky pick up! Glad you found this video!!
Nice review. Thank you.
Do you think the "tilt forward" feature may be to help people with lower back issues stand up and exit the chair with less strain on their backs?
