@@simoSLJ89 I'm 6'4" and around 95kg in weight I've used a herman mill mirra, which made me look at buying a new chair, lovely but no way am i spending that amount although it is the only office chair i have sat on that i almost never sit on one of my legs on (yes i know incredibly bad habit which is why i mentioned it) I use an Ikea Markus at home and ive found it comfortable, would prefer the desk to be deeper even though on a corner. The markus has the armrests waaay to low and unadjustable but i dont find the Mirra's arm rests to be usable and i end up leaning too close to the monitor, (yes i think its not just the chair but the overall ergonomics) the Markus length of back rest just suits me far better than the Mirra. You should really put in the description that it's a long term review of an Autonomous ErgoChair so people searching online for reviews can find it! I know this video is stale now & this'll be buried in comments, but good reviews of specific products are hard to find, especially long term ones, and a long term review of a superseded model is still very useful
I came here to appreciate this comment. I’ve been looking into different chairs and thankfully was recommended the video after a year from its original date. Still very good info and I’m appreciate the in depth and realistic review.
@@luke6038 Not sure what you mean but I cannot find this chair anywhere else. I heard it was on alibaba a few years back but that was from their own manufacturer
@@htko89 look up merryfair, malasyian company. It’s 100% repbranding, which would be fine with but autonomous is praising their own inhouse factory, masterful engineering and so on. Kinda shady
Lets not forget, Jay told people not to donate to him while he was live streaming because he did not need the money, especially during this pandemic, ever since than, Jay has become my favourite youtuber!
I have a HM Aeron and a Tempur-Pedic mattress. I believe it’s important to invest in the areas you spend most of your life; for me, that’s sitting in my office or sleeping in bed. I’ve never regretted either purchase.
Yea, I don't understand people who say, "that chair is too expensive" and then go out and spend 1.5k on a TV. Back surgery is expensive. Investing in things you use for hours is important.
Finally a commentary on things that are truly important to comfort. We spend SO much time sitting, its very important to invest in the one thing that makes all the difference to fatigue and overall health and comfort. Thank you for this Jay. Much appreciated.
Appreciate the content, Jay. Can’t overstate the need for a quality chair when you’re an office worker, or spend a lot of time at the desk, like a gamer. Even more so if both! I had a Herman Miller Aeron for probably 15 years. I’m now about 4 or 5 years into a Herman Miller Embody. Man, it’s like there’s no chair there at all. It’s like I float. Kids, there’s an old saying. Spend your money on the things that connect you to the ground. That’s your bed, your shoes, your chair, and your tires. That advice has served me well for many, many years. Ignore that at your peril. Lastly, loved the Ifixit bit. Had a very Crazy Eddie vibe. Took me back to Saturday morning NY area TV with Crazy Eddie hawking his Christmas in July sale. Insaaaaaaaaaane!
@@houssamalucad753 The Aeron is great. I bought a Size C for myself off craigslist for $400. It's a almost too big and i'm 6'2" 250 lbs. I brought home a Size B [from work] that they weren't using because it has no tilt lock mechanism. Get one with tilt lock. It has a pneumatic tilt mechanism so it's not too bad, but the lock makes a huge difference. This tiltless one is from 2006 btw, and still works just like the Size C that is only a couple years old. Moral of the story, get a size B Aeron unless you're over 6'2" or over 250 lbs. They're cheaper on craigslist. See them all the time for $400-600, just make sure you get one with the tilt lock mechanism. [Edit]
Totally agree. I'm a software developer, currently in homeoffice and after the first few days I really noticed how bad my chair is compared to the one at my workplace...
@@yourordinarytwathere8789 Oh, it strongly depends on the brand and model. There are some REALLY bad "Gaming Chairs" out there. They are great if you want to reduce your screen time, because you won't be sitting in it for more than maybe an hour or two. I have one too and am very happy with it. But after two years of searching for a comfortable, sturdy and good looking Gaming Chair, I only found this single one that hits those marks. And they usually are rather expensive...
SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEE. I've been rocking the dining room chair rig for my work and gaming pc for over a year now. It's uncomfortable as all hell, but its get the job done. Still I am very excited for the day I can afford to upgrade
I've had the Ergo Chair 2 for a couple years now (give or take) and I love it! I'm 6 foot, 215 lbs., and have a very long torso. I've never had the static problems that Jay mentions and she's still as quiet as the day I bought her. I bought the first one for work and have recently been saving up to get another one for home because I loved it so much and my home chair is falling apart. Would highly recommend.
I use a Steelcase Amia and I never regretted my purchase. I tried the Amia, Leap v2 and Gesture at a store and settle for the Amia because of it's superior seat imo. 100% worth it if you have a job where your sitted most of the time. 12 years garantee it huge also! I'll never go back to staples' chair or something of the like ever again.
Coming from a somebody that's roughly 6'5", thank you. It's hard to find content about this sort of thing, that's actually applicable. And I totally agree about the leather seats! way too hot!
I've warehoused and built hundreds if not thousands of commercial office chairs over the last couple years, so here are some of my amateur chair person (?) thoughts. 1. Mesh seat pans are overrated, they tear and stretch worse than leather. 2. The price/quality ratio is a bell curve. The higher-end budget chairs are better than the entry-level mid tier. Don't go over $400, don't go under $800. 3. Adjustable and locking head and lumbar support > support pillows. 4. Standard barrel-pin casters are cheap and easy to replace. 5. NOTE FOR JAY: Commercial office suppliers can order big and tall chairs with extra caster prongs, wider seat and back pans, heavier materials, etc.
Herman Miller Aeron sitter here. Over the years (5 or so), the mesh on the front edge of the seat has started to fray from all the sliding and twitching I do. It's not at the point where it's lost any support, but I expect I'll have to be replacing it in a couple years. This is an easy DIY project - there aren't any screwdriver heads that you won't be able to drive with a bit from a hardware store, and the construction of the seat is straightforward enough that you won't need to search for blueprints. It will require the proper shape of mesh, but that's about it. In general, if you're a hardwood floor owner, you'll want to invest into hardwood floor casters, which are just your regular soft rollerblade wheel mounted in a caster rig. I had this rolling on engineered wood floors for years, and there aren't any dents or depressions in the finish. BUT, wood floors that feature a layer of plywood on top (like engineered wood) may crack in places where there are air pockets in the plywood layer. Also, mesh seat is very nice because you can blow a fan through it. All swamp-ass sufferers here will appreciate.
You know, I've been sitting in a wheelchair for 22 years now, and I've never understood all this elaborate crap they put in office chairs when wheelchair surfaces are literally just a piece of cloth stretched between two metal rods, and most people who use them have some spinal damage - myself included - that makes seating comfort all the more important for them, so I thought all of these office chair features are basically just snake oil. This was THE video that convinced me I should give one of these a go. Thanks!
That has blown my mind. Not that I see wheelchairs on a daily basis or anything, but every single one I do see is exactly as you describe, a piece of cloth between two rods. Why the hell don't wheelchairs have these ergonomic features built in? I understand cost would be a big factor but I would have thought they'd be a bit more prevalent, haven't seen even one.
@@pkbeast Yea, and that's the exact reason why I've been thinking if I'm good to sit in one for hours on end, I don't need all these features an office chair has... but the thing is, I do not sit still in a wheelchair the entire time, I move around, and even so my back starts hurting after a couple hours, which I've always blamed on the actual condition I'm having, instead of the comfort of the chair. Now I'll try such an office chair to find out how much longer I can sit in one without having to lay down a bit to recover from all the strain.
From my understanding the seats of wheel chairs are made that way so they are easily collapsable. Most people I know who are reliant on a wheel chair have a cushion they add to the chair usually a cheap pillow or high quality memory foam.
@@dominic.h.3363 While I can't talk about the chairs of the calibre in this video but I can say that I gone from a cheapo £40GBP (~$65 USD) desk chair to a £100 (~$160 USD) one and found an ENORMOUS difference in the comfort and ergonomics. Best decision I've made, in fact I'm looking for one in the £200-£300 mark to replace this one. (USD conversions at pre-Brexit values as that's when I bought them)
As someone with a *very* similar bodytype to Jay's, the *IKEA Markus* was the perfect chair for me. The headrest is exactly where my head is, the support is placed just right and the armrests are at the correct level, even if the chair lacks adjustability. The only downside is that the thin leather cover on the headrest eventually broke after 3 years, because it is genuinely paper thin. The result is purely visual damage to the chair. Otherwise it is perfectly fine after a good 5 years or more.
At 6'5" and 120-130kg, I used an Ikea Markus for the longest time too. It's been relegated to a backup now. My only issue with the chair, considering its dirt cheap, is the shape metal bars supporting the armrests. They are so far towards the front of the seat, that it prevents me from siting with my legs wide apart if I'd want to. Other than that over the years it's kept up very well. The only wear on it is the lover back of it has some fack letter and not mesh, and that fake leather has been torn apart by belts I always wear on my jeans. Currently I sit in a Titan from Neatforseat.com - it's a "gaming" kinda a chair. But it not a stupid racing chair. It looks just like any big office chair.
bought one because i didn't feel like spending much on a chair at that time. Well it wasn't a great experience, mostly the arms rest in metal. Bought a Aeron and never looked back.
I actually got a high mesh back chair from Ikea for like 150 bucks and have been surprised by how much I like it. Support and comfort feels better than other hand me down chairs I've used in the past. The only think I would have changed is a cloth seat, but that one was out of stock. The leather seat isn't horrible but it's not my favorites. I have gripes being 5'2" but I can sit cross legged in it so that's a plus.
Jay says his chair is a 5 year chair. For the cost that is fine. I have had my Herman Miler for 12 years and just had to replace it. $ per Year they are real similar. You just save time shopping.
@João M. Most of the complaints are probably from people who could not afford it. I will only buy Herman Miller chairs. There are two reasons: comfort and warranty. I had a HM chair for 10 years. The back would no longer stay up. I took it to the HM dealer. The HM dealer called me two days later and said come in and choose a new chair. HM chose to not repair the chair and to just give me a brand new chair. I now have a new chair with a 12 year warranty. About 4 years into, one of the armrest 'rivets' broke. I brought it in and they repaired it, tuned the chair up and had it ready in 4 days. I will not buy a cheap chair again. Jay is right. There is a reason why they are premium chairs. They are built for comfort and longevity.
João M. Amazon reviews (for United States at least) are very very good for Herman Miller chairs. Besides, Herman Miller is the best of the best in terms of support and comfort. Since we only have one body/one back and damage both every time we spend hours in a chair, I think the cost is definitely worth the safety (plus the cost of later issues that back problems will bring could be hundreds of times more expensive).
Agreed. After probably spending just as much on various Office Depot rejects over the years, I finally ponied up for a Leap V2 a couple months ago and has been a joy to sit in. Worked out well since I am currently working from home.
I use the same chair both at home and in the office and I couldn't be happier with it. I will say most people seem to prefer either it or the Herman Miller Aeron, maybe find a place you can sit in one before making that big purchase.
For my sins, I bought a "gaming chair" at over 100 GBP I was "convinced that it was the best thing ever. After a few months of heavy use, both as a dinner table chair, a TV chair and s gaming chair, I can finally admit.. it sucks. I went to an office clearance place and tried an "business " class of chair. I will never buy a "gaming" chair again
Oh yeah that sucks. I have just a cheap IKEA chair that i find it very comfortable after years of use. I also try to get up and walk around as it keeps my mind from wanting to die.
This working from home has made me learn to get a good chair. Back has been killing me in this Staples Leather chair. Cushion hurts and the back slightly tilts back.
As a fellow 'Jay-sized' individual (6'5", 110kg), thanks for making this! A good desk chair is so under appreciated - I've been lucky in that the last couple places I worked actually took this stuff seriously and ordered me new desk chairs as I was a bit tall for the stuff they had lying around too, but I remember the cheap desk chairs I had at uni used to kill my back!
As a similarly 'Jay-sized' individual (6'3", 85kg) I agree with the back ache from standard chairs so much! My crappy, cheap, eBay chair is so comfortable for my shortages family and friends but after about 20 minutes my back starts aching, feels like it pinches on a nerve or something below my left shoulder blade and it has no head support, so the back ends like just below my shoulders and upwards of that it's all on me. Tall people need to do more chair reviews.
Most of those cheap chairs you'll find only have a spine bar to support the back (up the middle) and not a full width support (side to side). Check out seat construction you'll see what I mean. For taller guys it's really hitting you low on the spine.
@@hamyncheese I've had a $160 mesh chair since March. I never sweated even when it was hot out and on colder days my butt gets a bit cold. It takes a bit of getting used to initially but it is worth it
I've been swearing by my Staple's Hyken chair for the past 2 years. Fully mesh, perfect amount of stiffness for me, solid amount of adjustability for the price. Overall just amazing value considering you can usually find it on sale for about $150, sometimes even less. The only issue I've had is parts of the arm rest peeling, but that's mostly because the height I keep it at gets the arm rests wedged under my desk sometimes.
Oh man I've been looking at that chair lately, question: Can you detatch the armrests? And Is the headrest fully adjustable? I like to be able to lean all the way back and rest my head while listening to music.
@@hereticsshallbecleansed7245 Back can recline to about 110 degrees and only has 3 positions it can be locked at, headrest can be tilted forward and back, not raised or lowered. Forget about the armrests, might be able to remove them from dissassembling them, and have 5 levels it can raise or lower.
I ended up going with one of their Highback chairs. For two days after work, I would take a book with me and set my cell-phone to a 15 minute timer. Then I just sat in each chair they had for 15 minutes while reading. For me, the Highback rated 3rd in comfort level, but it rated 1st in lack of discomfort (yes, those are two different things). There were two Waterfall models that were more comfortable, but I discovered that they would put pressure on my thighs if I sat on them for too long. Which is really odd, because the seats on the Waterfall models are specifically designed to not put pressure on your thighs; I think my weight was the issue. My point being, while my chair doesn't have much adjustable, it's still a decent chair and it fits my body size really well. But, I took the time to try different chairs to see what would fit me. Shoot, I even tried one of those gamer-chairs about a year later, and like Jay said, those chairs suck.

I will say about casters, i recently bought the rollerblade style casters that are wood floor safe, and boy are they nice. Very smooth and quiet. 20-30 bucks on amazon totally worth it especially if you have hardwood floors like me, no more plastic mat.
I'm about 6'2" 240lbs, and I finally broke down and bought a Secretlab Titan, which is their "Big and Tall" model chair. It makes a world of difference from the generic size chair that I used to use, and it is also more supportive. It's weird because when I first sat it in I thought "Wow, this chair is way too stiff." But within a couple of days I immediately noticed much less back pain from forcing myself into the correct posture, and not having a chair that I melt into and then proceed to sit in for very extended periods while gaming. I looked into the Autonomous chair also but really wanted something with an emphasis on reclining for the times I'm not gaming and I just want to kick back and watch some TH-cam or whatever. Okay, sorry for rambling, hopefully this helps someone in the comments.
Those wings though ... You find yourself taking corners at high speeds so often that you need the lateral support? I'm a big guy too, 192 cm & 92 kg. I tried an expensive gaming chair and loved it at first. I have wide shoulders and the wings forced my shoulders forward and induced a bow in my upper back.
@@ThePirateGod I looked at that chair on their web site and it sure looked like it had wings angled forward at shoulder height. I guess I'd have to sit in one to know for sure.
This is such an amazing video and I am happy to finally find someone who is in the same situation I am. Being 6'4" and 275 pounds my chair is a very important piece of equipment in my set up. At around 6'5" and 260lbs, really appreciate this kind of content. I struggled for years to find a chair that fit me and was affordable. I have a Chachi Ergonomic full mesh chair that I paid £160 /$215 for 2 1/2 years ago (msrp £395/$530 but usually sells for £200/$270 most places). Rated 24hr for up to 280 lbs. Only real problems I have are that the spring for the back is a little looser than I'd like, feels like you're going to fall back if you lean and the headrest occasionally falls down if I lean my head on it in the wrong place. Otherwise great for sitting at work all day then, when done, playing games for the evening.
hows that chair getting on? currently looking for a new chair myself, so many companies now its unreal, don't really have a budget, but don't really want to spend 1200 on an herman miller either :P
@@martyn334 Try a Mavis M9, though they have different variants of chairs starting price is 499-899 depending on the series of chairs and can get a payment plan. From someone who like to game and has purchased different gaming chairs the Mavis is really comfortable. if you check them out the M9 has different adjustments for lumbar and back, and headrest. But if you don't have the budget, it's hard to find a decent comfortable gaming chair.
I pulled the trigger on a Herman Miller Embody 8 years ago and it still feels brand new. I will do a long term review on my experience with it soon on my channel.
Pretty much anything Herman Miller is fantastic for long term sitting at a desk, I got a used Aeron dirt cheap on Craigslist, did some TLC and it still feels like the newer ones at the office, and that was 5 years ago and still going strong Replaced the seat and arm rests (thanks cat) and I'm thankful I can still find individual replacement parts for this chair instead of throwing it all out
I don't even remember how old my Aeron is; I've had it that long. The piston is finally starting to go and I'm a fairly light guy (165lbs). It's just age. The rest of the chair is perfect. And fortunately, replacing the piston is neither expensive nor difficult. I work from home and am at my desk for long stretches of time; typically do 10-12 hour days. A good, supportive office chair is a must for that kind of sitting. Ergonomics being the annoying thing they are, I have a recommendation for those of us who are on the shorter side (like me) - chuck the arm rests. Get them right off the chair. Throw them away. They're going to hurt your shoulders in the long term because you probably can't lower the rests enough to keep your arms at 90* bends. Likely, if you're short and have arm rests on your chair, you're hunching your shoulders ever so slightly. Don't. Do. That. Get rid of the arm rests and get really snuggly with your desk. Rest your arms there.
The Embody is such a great chair. I got a discount on mine through work, but was about to add to cart before I found the discount. It's completely worth it.
Hey Jay! I’ve recently found you on TH-cam sometime earlier this week, and all this information has been quite helpful in me selecting parts and such finally allowing me to build my first gaming pc next week!! Just wanted to say keep up the honest work cause you give guys like me, who’ve never tried to build a pc before, the courage and information to correctly build a pc. Thanks man!
Do it! I know they ask for a lot for a chair. Even I thought so too, but I purchased a Steelcase Gesture a while back and smile every time I sit in it. The way it just constantly hugs my spine is extremely comfortable and the amount of adjustment it provides keeps you not wanting to move around or take breaks and just focus on the work at hand. I wish everyone would have a decent ergonomic chair, it's an amazing experience. If only if I could find someone who can spoon me as well as this chair, my life would be complete.
Funny you mentioned the Gesture, because I recently sold it after a couple of years because I've never come across a chair that had such an aggressive lumbar, and it would just cause pain every time I wanted to recline in the thing.
@@polar6066 Science says otherwise. Firmer seat pad supports your body's weight better than a soft pad does. Soft may feel better short-term, but over time it takes the full weight and shape of a person which can lead to a lot of discomfort. Most of the premium chair companies use some kind of firm seat pad
This is one-of-a-kind because it's *three years in the making*. No one would take that long to review a product, and I mean that in a good way, this video was awesome. The disadvantage is that, if they did, the product may very well have been discontinued by that time.
I agree, most reviews these days are people claiming whatever they just purchased is the best thing ever because of choice supportive bias. In depth reviews or followups like this are extremely rare. It's even more difficult now with everyone buying comments and reviews, just a giant shit fest that's annoying to wade through :(
As an owner of a HermanMiller office chair (that I got for free from a fort Bragg renovation) I can honestly say that there is no other office chair or gaming chair like it. The quality is phenomenal and the wide variety of support you can customize for your body is just as great. I’ve had the chair for a little over a year and it has been the best thing I’ve put my butt on. When and if this chair ever decides to break down permanently I will not hesitate to spend over a grand for another one. Have definitely done a few 12 hour+ long streaming sessions with it and I don’t feel like I sat on a wooden stool at the end of it. If you can afford or save up for one of HermanMillers chair I would highly recommend it. Price tag isn’t pretty but the comfort you get out of one of the chairs is definitely worth it for me. Yeah I know I never bought it myself but like I said, when this one dies I will not hesitate to buy one even if it’s priced higher then my PC rig
this is surprisingly HUGE. I HATE leather chairs now, it just doesnt compare. I didnt realize how uncomfortable I was with my last chair just due to HEAT. Previous chair waaass.... Realspace® Axton Big And Tall. Current chair i cannot find but is very similar to the WorkPro® 12000 Series Ergonomic Mesh/Fabric Mid-Back Manager's Chair.
Not only do fake leather chairs make you sweat more, after a while the material starts to wear out as well and flake off and will be everywhere in your home
I don't usually comment, but regarding the queation "Which chair do you use?" I use a car seat. An actual car seat from a vokswagen. I had my buddy weld me a simple iron box frame and I've been using it for about 3-4 years now, and I'm looking to *upgrade*. The things I dont like about it -Heavy and reeeally hard to move(I have to put a tiny carpet or an old towel under it so I don't destroy my hardwood floor) and it takes a fair bit of strength to push myself away from the desk -no arm rests...sucks -the bucket part of the seat (both on the back and butt) doesn't let you change positions and move into anything but the way you are meant to be sitting in a car seat. - I have to use a seat cover on top of it so I can throw it into the washing machine instead of washing the entire seat* -* Washing the seat is a nightmare...it weighs 35-40kg, it's huge and unwieldy...those factors make it reeal easy to draw horizontal lines on each door, doorframe, wall, speakers, other people's shins or anything that you even slightly scrape with the bottom part. Washing the seat takes me 2 hours to do it properly, and it's basically manual labour, even with the machine that is specifically meant for washing car seats - then it takes anywhere from 5 days (if it's in the sun the whole day) to a month to dry (if you soak it completely while washing, and it's winter, so you gotta keep it in the house). - it takes a minute of spinning the wheel to recline the chair fully -it's pretty squeaky - the butt part is kinda too short for me -you can't sit in it cross legged because of the butt-bucket-part-thingies. -basically no lumbar support -almost non-adjustabe head rest -kinda angled too much towards the back, so if you peel your back off of the back of the chair, you slouch immediately. The things I do like about it: -It absolutely would withstand a nuclear bomb-inestructible -Sometimes I like it being so immobile, I can recline it and put my legs up onto the desk, and not move the chair in the slightest. -it's much more comfortable then regular chairs and cheap office chairs -it was free :) -it looks reeally cool to have an actual car seat in your room -it's height adjustable, but I rarely use it. All in all it was a fantastic chair for the price 😄 I'm thinking of buying the Oklahoma PDH, it's about 280-300eur where I live, and I don't really have that much options in that price range...the next step up would be an ergohuman but it's 680-700 eur.
Me: "Wow, that might be a deal-breaker for me" **looks at the chair I'm currently using** Me: "Yeah, any negative they say about that chair is still a positive compared to mine..."
me: *sits in old chair that neighbor was getting rid of because the butt springs are literally flat or sticking in my ass* "at least its not my old wooden one with the broken and bad back support"

Herman Miller announced they are producing a "Gaming" chair in partnership with Logitech. Since it's marketed to gamers it might come in at a lower price point. I use a Steelcase Gesture at work and would love to have it at the home office. All this working from home might make me finally pull the trigger on it.
Man, those SteelCase chairs are the bomb. I use one as well at work and it's amazing. Now, I don't remember what model/type it is specifically but I looked it up once and it was priced around $750! Now I appreciate a lot more where my behind rests all day at the office 😂
We have Steel Case Think Chairs at work. They're great when they're new. But I'd put them in the 3-5 year category. After that the mesh isn't nearly as supportive. The gas spring on a lot of them has worn out and the sink to the bottom of their stroke. We've had a lot of them reconditioned and cleaned a few times. A number of them have also been replaced. This is an an office space environment where chairs are going to be passed around and abused quite a bit more than a personal office setup. I bought the Ergo Chair 2 for home. I think the Think Chairs were around $850 a piece when the company first got them. Considering the price difference I'm pretty happy with what the Ergo 2 offers so far.
Same here. I got the cloth version because it breathes better. At 6'2" 269lbs this Titan checks all the boxes with adjustments and sturdy build for a guy my size. I tried one of those stupid racing chairs and sold it after a week. The only thing missing is the head rest. Although, their memory foam pillow is quite nice when reclining. Just wish they would come out with a matching ottoman.
an office (mesh!) chair will always be nicer to sit on... made the change from some dxracer to secretlabs titan to a neuechair (also sold by secretlabs) - and i wouldn't wanna go back one step. the controls on the neuechair are not great after 1.5y of usage - i'll definitely get a herman miller next.
6:05 I find it interesting that Jay said he has his chair's gas piston bottomed out. Wouldn't make sense to have it maxed, so the chair is higher and your hips are higher than your knees? Idk, at 6'7" I find that sitting like that adds a lot of tension to my knees and lower back over time.
Got a used Herman Miller, best investment ever, when or if it wears out I would definitely pay the price for new, although no headrest, I be,i eve you can get an optional one
I don't think there's an official one, but there are headrests you can add. Had one at an old job, but it never felt right. Was too low for me. The chair though. Man I miss it...
There’s no headrest because the head doesn’t need to be held up, it’s support of the back. HM answered this question on instagram. Resting your head is good when you’re lounging but for tasks, no need, plus it looks better!
I got a brand new one, and it's still probably the best investment I've made in the last 5 years! As someone who spends literally all day at my computer, it seemed idiotic not to invest in my own future health by having a proper chair. I sometimes miss my old one due to the fact it was more like a recliner and allowed me to be a lazy schmuck more comfortably, but my lower back feels fine now at the end of the day... It didn't use to.
Agreed. I bought a fully refurbished one for $450 shipped to my door. It literally looks and feels like new and I love it. I won't be going back to the Amazon Special Race Car chair that broke in about 6 months.
i always take the reviewers sincerity when they embed sponsor ads in their video that are unrelated to the product they are reviewing. Absolute honesty
Lol! What chair is it, a Lay-Z-boy? I’d still have our 20 year old couch, but I got married and my wife managed to strip the screw threads, rip the back, and break the seat in about 2 years because she watches TV all day and sleeps on it (in addition to refusing to eat at the dining room table, and spilling her food and drinks all over it). She also broke the IKEA arm rest of our replacement couch within 3 months. But hey! This year will be our 5 year anniversary!
@@evshrug congrats on your 5th anniversary, also its just an old office chair which has had its seat portion replaced once (also maybe the swivel mechanism or the wheels tbh i dont remember that far back)
I have had this very chair for just over year now and bought it purely because of this video...that and I needed an new chair! I still have this chair, this chair is still good as new and this chair is THE most comfortable chair I have ever had. Both I and my backside thank you!! Cheers M.
Hey Jay! I was curious if your amazon links are meant to lead to the product every video I've attempted to go to the Amazon link it simply takes me to amazon and not the product listed in the video. If this is intended then it's working if not I figured I'd let you know! Thanks for the great content!
Thank you for this! I needed this exact explanation. I am 6’4 and 260-270 pounds. It is SO HARD to find a good chair. After working standing all day for 5 years, then switching to a work from home gig, I have been suffering from such bad back pain. I was using a typical, sub $200 gaming chair because it matched the colors of my other desk accessories. And it was fine back when I only spent 1-2 hours each da in it. Now that I spend 9-12 hours a day in a chair, I really need to bite the bullet and make a good investment. I will be ordering this next week for sure
Bought an Aeron with a discount....15 years ago....and it’s still perfect. Pull the trigger. Cheaper in the long run compared to buying 4 lesser chairs and better for your back.
I got so lucky man. My company does demo work occasionally and we demoed this old indoor chemical facility. They were throwing away EVERYTHING. I found two Herman Miller Aerons in the back, one in rough shape and one in not bad shape. They're the older models but I took the better one and cleaned it up and brought it home, another co-worker took the other one home for his wife. It's pretty fantastic coming from my 90 dollar amazon "racing" chair to this. Huge difference.
Thanks Jay for an honest review, Ive been using cheap sub $150 chairs at home and hating life when in the office we use Herman Miller Mirra or HumanScale chairs. Bit the bullet and picked up the ErgoChair 2 and already this is the first full day sitting in it and very comfortable. Well worth the $339 (current price with holiday sale) for some reason i thought you had a different chair and this vid, which i watched when you initially posted it, didnt realize you were using the ErgoChair. Good stuff bro!
Steelcase Leap V2 is the most comfortable chair I have sat on. Ive worked at a few Tech offices and have tried them all. The leap is the only 24 hour chair for me. I am 5’5” and weigh 150 with lower back problems and this is the only chair where I don’t feel any pain after prolonged use. Does a nice job of hugging your ass while providing superb lumbar support.
Great video, Jay. I've had many gamer chairs in 25+ years. All have suffered from the same problem, their wheels. Even my $800 COUGAR TERMINATOR had the same problem. When I assembled this chair, I didn't install its wheels. Instead, I used a set of LIFELONG brand wheels, AMAZON, of course. They are single, not double, wheel casters. The wheels are 3", made of polyurethane, and weigh 8.10 oz. They are made using thick gauge steel frames. To me, they are the perfect mod for a gamer chair.
BikeMike I’ve had both the Aeron and the Embody, when the Embody was new I liked it better, but the Aeron never started creaking over time, it stayed and still is in mint condition and is adjustable and comfy as hell.
When we are out of lockdown, I'd suggest looking into second hand office furniture. You might be able to pick up a decent chair for a fraction of the price.
That's how I got my Steelcase Amia for $25 Canadian, so like $18 bucks US$ Big corporations seem to blow out very lightly used chairs all the time so there are crazy deals to be found.
Agreed. That will be the unfortunate side effect of this pandemic. There will probably be lots of office and restaurant equipment available on the second hand market. I bought a lightly used Steelcase Think chair about 8 years ago for $100 and it's still going strong. One of the most comfortable chairs that I've ever sat in. The seat cushion foam is almost worn out though and will need to be replaced soon. However that is considering I worked from home for 5 years and sat on that chair for nearly 10-12 hours a day between work and gaming. The chair is made to have parts easily replaced and also recycled at the end of it's life.
Holy crap. Those are some very nice deals. I've had to pay 515 Euro for a 7 year old (and well specced) Herman Miller Mirra 1, though it was refurbished a little. It feels quite new to me. But still, 500+ Euro seems reasonable to me.
Btw. I had a Giroflex Syntop from the early 90s... when the spring collapsed, the chair was something like 22 years old. Some plastic parts don't look as nice anymore, but the cushions are fine, the mechanics are mostly fine. Quality chairs can last a long time.
I bought an assembled Hyken Mesh Task chair several years ago at Staples because I got it on sale. No other chair has been able to tempt me away from it. I can't remember if it was 150 or 200 but for the price it cannot be beat. Fully mesh and strong as hell. I've been as much as 290 to now 250 and it's held up. I'm 6' and it seems to be built for this size. The nice to have would be rotating and sliding adjustment of the arm rests, but my arms don't touch the rests when I'm actually gaming. The head rest is adequate, and the only thing I've replaced is the casters with rollerblade style so it rolls better on carpet.
Refurbished Herman Miller Aeron, paid about $500 for it here in the UK. Same chair , a third of the price. Worth looking into that if you have it as an option.
I have a chair that is a foam butt pad and a mesh back and that's it. No arm rest, no head rest, no adjustable lumbar support. I actually added a gel butt pad destined for making sitting in cars for comfortable. Even without all that stuff, It's really comfortable for even long daily gaming sessions. That being said, I'm an average 5'9" sized guy so most chairs are designed for a guy around my size.
Thanks Jay and Phil for still making videos during our current situation! Much appreciated for the entertainment while staying locked up. :) Also that music sample of Midnight Vibes gets a thumbs up from me!

Amen. I have a Steelcase Leap v2, and a Sleep number i8. Once you hurt your back, there's no fixing it. Keep it healthy to avoid those painful issues.
also shoes.
Yup, HM Aeron user here too. Surprisingly easy to find on craigslist, usually from some other company's liquidation, in the $300-400 range.
Yes Exactly, so true, why spend 350 on this chair when for just a bit more you can get a used Herman Miller from Craigslist or Ebay.
Which herman miller chair would you recommend? And how tall and heavy are you?
That's once nice chair ya got there. I'm envious. No way I can afford it though lol.

@@pkbeast there are ergonomic wheelchairs but are super expensive. Also wheelchairs are not supposed to be used for a whole day.
(USD conversions at pre-Brexit values as that's when I bought them)
Best Ad i ever seen, thx IFIXIT.
You mean Herman Miller?
michael bay explosionnnnnnnnnnnnn
Sparky no he meant the sponsor
As someone with a *very* similar bodytype to Jay's, the *IKEA Markus* was the perfect chair for me.
The headrest is exactly where my head is, the support is placed just right and the armrests are at the correct level, even if the chair lacks adjustability.
The only downside is that the thin leather cover on the headrest eventually broke after 3 years, because it is genuinely paper thin. The result is purely visual damage to the chair. Otherwise it is perfectly fine after a good 5 years or more.
I am 6'2" with long thighs and find the seat base length on the Markus a little too small. Apart from that it's pretty good.

What was wrong with your Herman Miller, and which was it?
I'd prefer a 5 year chair thats 1/5 of the cost, in case i dont like it, i havnt commited too much, also, accidents happen
@@tanujrana8490 These types of chairs have 12 year warranties. Accidents do happen, but it's covered by default.
Since we only have one body/one back and damage both every time we spend hours in a chair, I think the cost is definitely worth the safety (plus the cost of later issues that back problems will bring could be hundreds of times more expensive).

ordered mine 2 days ago, it says 7 april but reading yall its not gonna be soon lol
@@BrockGrimes didn't know that so thanks for informing me bud, goes a way to explaining the back ache lol
I was reading this comment and thought "The hell, I'm not 6'5, nor do I remember typing this" then I read the name.
What I left this video with "I NEED IFIXIT"
I need a chair that wont make my cheeks sweat. I love my DXracer, but man its a sweat fest.
staples hyken mesh task check that one out
Mesh chairs are godly. There are some good $150-300 mesh chairs that are basically copies of $800 chairs
I'm so glad you asked this question! I'm headed to Staples first thing in the morning to check out the Hyken Mesh Task Chair for 240 USD!
@@hamyncheese I've had a $160 mesh chair since March. I never sweated even when it was hot out and on colder days my butt gets a bit cold. It takes a bit of getting used to initially but it is worth it
Now I'm thinking about Linus' water cooled chair.
Me using a foldable plastic chair:
👁👄👁 AMAZING
I swear that iFixIt commercial will never get old lmao
Agreed lol
How tall are you guys? I head the headrest is only good for short people
I bought one late 2018 and it has been quite good especially the neck and lumbar support.
The Ifixit ad style is so old, but the fact that you nail it so well makes it really cool
I've been sitting on a swiss ball as my chair for 15 years now. Makes you work on your posture all the time! Cheaper than a chair as well.

King Jerbear I ordered the Secretlab Omega last night so this really helps me! Looking forward to it being delivered a lot more now!
The Titan doesn't have big wings. I love my chair. I'd love to see what Jay thinks of it. Being it is one of the few designs made for big people.
@@ThePirateGod I looked at that chair on their web site and it sure looked like it had wings angled forward at shoulder height. I guess I'd have to sit in one to know for sure.

@@martyn334 the first tilt locking position broke a little while ago so can't lock it upright . Everything else is still good though.
@@martyn334 Try a Mavis M9, though they have different variants of chairs starting price is 499-899 depending on the series of chairs and can get a payment plan. But if you don't have the budget, it's hard to find a decent comfortable gaming chair.
I pulled the trigger on a Herman Miller Embody 8 years ago and it still feels brand new. I will do a long term review on my experience with it soon on my channel.
Pretty much anything Herman Miller is fantastic for long term sitting at a desk, I got a used Aeron dirt cheap on Craigslist, did some TLC and it still feels like the newer ones at the office, and that was 5 years ago and still going strong
Replaced the seat and arm rests (thanks cat) and I'm thankful I can still find individual replacement parts for this chair instead of throwing it all out
I don't even remember how old my Aeron is; I've had it that long.
That IFixit ad killed me 🤣😂
I've read researching chairs and apparently having a firm to medium-firm padding in your seat will actually help your posture, and not harm it.
not sure i can agree
@@polar6066 Science says otherwise. Firmer seat pad supports your body's weight better than a soft pad does. Soft may feel better short-term, but over time it takes the full weight and shape of a person which can lead to a lot of discomfort. Most of the premium chair companies use some kind of firm seat pad
I really wish I could find more chair reviews like this. This is exceptionally well done.
It's even more difficult now with everyone buying comments and reviews, just a giant shit fest that's annoying to wade through :(
That iFixit ad made me have flashbacks of old Micro Machines commercials.
Do it again.
Never thought about the breathability in a chair. Jay has 2 cents my man!
Is that where the ass smell comes from after long gaming sessions? 😂 I know I shower everyday

I don't usually comment, but regarding the queation "Which chair do you use?"
I use a car seat. An actual car seat from a vokswagen. I had my buddy weld me a simple iron box frame and I've been using it for about 3-4 years now, and I'm looking to *upgrade*.
The things I dont like about it
-Heavy and reeeally hard to move(I have to put a tiny carpet or an old towel under it so I don't destroy my hardwood floor) and it takes a fair bit of strength to push myself away from the desk
-no arm rests...sucks
-the bucket part of the seat (both on the back and butt) doesn't let you change positions and move into anything but the way you are meant to be sitting in a car seat.
- I have to use a seat cover on top of it so I can throw it into the washing machine instead of washing the entire seat*
-* Washing the seat is a nightmare...it weighs 35-40kg, it's huge and unwieldy...those factors make it reeal easy to draw horizontal lines on each door, doorframe, wall, speakers, other people's shins or anything that you even slightly scrape with the bottom part.
- it takes a minute of spinning the wheel to recline the chair fully
-it's pretty squeaky
- the butt part is kinda too short for me
-you can't sit in it cross legged because of the butt-bucket-part-thingies.
-basically no lumbar support
-almost non-adjustabe head rest
-kinda angled too much towards the back, so if you peel your back off of the back of the chair, you slouch immediately.
The things I do like about it:
-It absolutely would withstand a nuclear bomb-inestructible
-Sometimes I like it being so immobile, I can recline it and put my legs up onto the desk, and not move the chair in the slightest.
-it's much more comfortable then regular chairs and cheap office chairs
-it was free :)
-it looks reeally cool to have an actual car seat in your room
-it's height adjustable, but I rarely use it.
All in all it was a fantastic chair for the price 😄
I'm thinking of buying the Oklahoma PDH, it's about 280-300eur where I live, and I don't really have that much options in that price range...the next step up would be an ergohuman but it's 680-700 eur.
Me: "Wow, that might be a deal-breaker for me"
**looks at the chair I'm currently using**
Me: "Yeah, any negative they say about that chair is still a positive compared to mine..."

Spent the $$ on a leather Gesture. Totally worth it. The Gesture is amazing.
Will it have addressable LED?
I'm rocking a Secret Lab Titan and holy cow, I love that thing. So good.
Same here. I got the cloth version because it breathes better. At 6'2" 269lbs this Titan checks all the boxes with adjustments and sturdy build for a guy my size. Most of the Herman Miller models allow for part replacement, so you can just replace things as they break piece by piece.

They're the older models but I took the better one and cleaned it up and brought it home, another co-worker took the other one home for his wife. It's pretty fantastic coming from my 90 dollar amazon "racing" chair to this. Huge difference.

Steelcase Leap V2 is the most comfortable chair I have sat on. Ive worked at a few Tech offices and have tried them all. The leap is the only 24 hour chair for me.

That's how I got my Steelcase Amia for $25 Canadian, so like $18 bucks US$
Big corporations seem to blow out very lightly used chairs all the time so there are crazy deals to be found.
THANK YOU IFIXIT! I think I needed that laugh more than I realized! 🤣🤣🤣
Worth looking into that if you have it as an option.
this ifixit ad is, by FAR, my favorite one 😂😂😂
Flash foward... I see you got the Herman Miller Embody, and it too is a static electricity monster... i'd like a comparison between that and this...
