  • This is a video on how to crate or kennel train an adult dog and a puppy. Especially if they struggle with separation anxiety or don’t like the kennel or crate. It's a tried and true method I have used for all of my dogs. As always if you have any questions feel free to contact me or leave me a comment. Thank you for watching.

Excellent video - very helpful. Thanks! Can you make a video about separation anxiety? Specifically, our Havanese pup cries, whines and shrieks every time we are out of sight. What can we do about that?? Help!

What would you recommend for a havanese puppy, a Harness or a collar?

      I always recommend a collar. Here’s why

It looks like he is gradually getting it. I like your approach. 🙂👍

I loved this 😍 It shows how not all dogs will get this on the first try and it takes patience, correction, and positive reinforcement! Dexter is such a charming little man, I love his personality :))

Very stubborn doggie! I saw your other crate traning video with a puppy which seemed to go much easier. So I'll start mine on day 1. I see you never use any treats to "lure" them in or feed them in the crate. Is praise enough with the havanese? Thank you, Irah! 🐾

Good eye. He wasn’t very comfortable with the kennel. It is certainly easier on a brand new puppy.
Yes I don’t recommend great training. Occasionally if a dog has anxiety or trama from a kennel a treat can be used to help make it a positive experience. But as a general rule I find Havanese do wonderfully with just praise. Thank you for watching!

No hate, but how is that the best way when you use force and tugging on his neck, instead of slowly easing him into the crate. I watch other dog trainers tackle this topic in a much less forceful way. Your dog seems not ready, so easing him in for now seems a better alternative. Just saying

Great question! I believe this is the best way because other trainers tend to use treats to train. I don’t find that necessary or helpful for many dogs. I just want to also clarify I wasn’t forcefully tugging on his neck. I just help the leash with some slight tension. He’s pulling against the leash so him walking forward releases that slight tension easily.
Stormy’s video is more what you’re looking for. She’s brand new and doesn’t have any kennel anxieties and isn’t trying to escape. 🐾💜

Dexter here is an adult with a bit of anxiety about his kennel and doesn’t like to go in on his own. But by the end of the video he successfully goes in and is very happy to. Then we worked on him staying in without stressing out as well.
If I eased Dexter in with treats and taught him to be calm with treats when I leave the house and something triggers his anxiety and he doesn’t have a treat to help him calm he will escalate. But the way I train mine it gives them the ability to do it on their own without treats needed. He learned quickly and instead of fighting him now and trying to lure him with food now if we place him very close to his crate he happily walks in and sit well.
I do take a very stern approach with him but I also take a very loving approach with much more positive reinforcement than negative. But I use both negative with no and some leash tension and positive with positive words like good and belly rubs and petting and pats.
