  • This video is showing how to teach your dog to walk properly on a leash. Havanese are highly motivated by praise. Dexter is with us for a couple months to work on some training to put a stop to some of the less desirable behaviors he has. Your pup shouldn't be pulling or lunging. Thanks so much for watching and as always feel free to leave me comments or contact me with any other specific questions.

    Thanks for the great tips. My 18-month old Havanese/bichon is still having issues. Wasn’t walked until I got her at 9 months. She plants her butt and doesn’t want to move forward. Do you have a correction for that issue?

    • @WittleHavanese
      @WittleHavanese  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! Yes. What you want to do for that is actually put your hand under their belly and stand them up and help their body move forward while pulling on the leash gently then praise when they take a few steps. Do that a few times until they move with just the leash then give gigantic praise.

    Hi! I tried your method of trying to walk and redirect, but sometimes my pup just froze and didnt walk when I redirect, what should I do when that happened?

    This is a great video. I have a puppy that is 12 weeks. He started to walk on the leash (after I trained in the yard). He was walking good on the road for a couple of days, but now he doesn’t want to walk away from the house. He will walk if I give him treats, but stops MANY times. On the way home, he hurries. Help! I want to be able to walk him.

      Thank you! What does he do when you start walking away from the house? Does he walk next to you or slightly behind or is he in front?

    Hi! About how old do you think a puppy should be to start this?

    • @WittleHavanese
      @WittleHavanese  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can start at 8 weeks in your house or enclosed backyard! Once they are 17 weeks and your vet says they are good to go in public places for walks then you can train anywhere.

    Also, if your dog stops VERY often to smell is that ok? Its hard to have a real walk if they just want to stop, would this exercise help them just follow you rather than stopping and smelling/doing their own thing?

    • @WittleHavanese
      @WittleHavanese  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a great question! You should train your dog to walk to follow you. You are the guide. So a potty command is important. So for example practice walking to the stop sign. Then you can practice giving them the potty command there and let them sniff and potty. Then continue the walk and they shouldn’t stop or try and sniff or stop until you do at the next stop sign. Does that make sense? The walk is a mental and physical benefit for the dog.

      @@WittleHavanese are you saying when they sniff it means that they want to potty, couldn't it also be exploring

    I took my dog for a walk. And...... he ran away.... He was alot faster than I expected.... My question is, Should i just lie to my daughter about her service dog. Or get a Pitbull from the pound and say the dog did push ups while she was gone. Looking forward to your advice...! 👍🏽

      Honest is the best policy. Best course of action is to reach out to neighbors and post fliers to find your daughters helpful canine. 🐾💜

    When is it okay to let your dog sleep on your bed? She never pees or anything on her bed and she will jump down to go on her potty pad if she needs to go, is this okay in the long run? We want her to sleep with us!

    • @WittleHavanese
      @WittleHavanese  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as it’s a behavior you want and she’s safe and potty trained it’s perfectly fine. 🐾💜

    • @WittleHavanese
      @WittleHavanese  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. He does want to investigate and probably pee. But mostly he wants to go where he wants and we are working on him trusting the leash and human to lead him. 💜
