Phase Two: Weeks 3 - 6 | Post Abdominal Surgery Yoga | Yoga with Joy

  • This is the second video in the 4 part recovery yoga series for after abdominal surgery. Although the exercises in this video are still very gentle, as it's aimed at those who have only recently undergone surgery, it is a step up from phase one, which is for using soon after surgery or later if the surgery was severe.
    In phase two: weeks 3 - 6, we start seated, as by now you will be ready to spend more time out of bed. We then use a chair strengthen, which allows for some seated and standing exercises. Then the practice finishes with lying down and gently strengthening the core muscles, then a final relaxation.
    In this yoga series there are four phases to aid your recovery after abdominal surgery, building up strength and flexibility so that daily movements become easier as you heal. Phase One is approximately for weeks 1 - 3 after surgery, followed by Phase Two (this video) which is suitable for weeks 3 - 6, Phase Three for weeks 6 - 9, and Phase Four for weeks 9 - 12. All the timings are approximate and you could carry on using the previous phases right through your recovery. You could use these videos to alternate with each other, depending on you body and the speed of your recovery.
    The series of videos is for anyone who has undergone abdominal surgery, which could include hysterectomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia operation, Caesarean section, any bowl surgery. Whatever surgery you've experienced, if it's involved an incision in your abdominal muscles these yoga techniques can really help. Just take things very slowly, do what you can and opt out of any exercise or posture that doesn't feel ok.
    Please speak with your doctor before starting this post abdominal surgery course, as it's very important that whatever exercise you do is in line with your stage of recovery. Only you know your body, but if you're unsure about when to start gentle movements, speak with a medical professional.
    💚 If you found this 4 part series helpful, I have 3 other videos for after abdominal surgery. Try them out!

    Hello Joy! I donated my kidney recently; and I found your videos even before surgery, in preparation. I started with Phase 1 about two weeks post-op, and it was all I could do. (I was exhausted, but felt great.) Today I "graduated myself" to Phase 2, and loved it. My go-to exercise for recovery is walking, and I find that your series complements this beautifully. Loved "the clock"!

      @YogawithJoy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kathy ~ you're amazing! What a wonderful thing to do, donate a kidney ❤ I'm so happy that these videos are helping you and complementing your walking. Yay, the clock! A lot of people get confused by that one (my instructions!) - I think I explain it better in the 12 week/12 video series I made (have you found that one?). I really wish you a swift and easeful recovery ~ sending blessings 🌟

    thank you for this Joy! Ive been doing maybe a bit too much , walking too far, carrying bags that are prob a bit too heavy etc, so this has brought me back to a more gentle level of exercise at week 4 / 5 and its great at bedtime to calm down and relax too. Very helpful for so many people I'm sure! You're so kind to put this video series up! Got to remind ourselves that even though scars look more healed on the outside things take a lot longer on the inside.

    Today is exactly 4 weeks after my hysterectomy surgery, it has been lots of pain and fatigue for me, so I've been very still while longing for my mat. But I've been having 3 good days now, so I figured I'd search for a soothing post hysterectomy routine and I found you. This was incredible. It felt safe and loving. It was so so good to move my body in this gentle way, and remember to fill myself up with love again, I ended the session with tears of gratitude. Thank you dearly 🙏🏼

    This one is lovely split into two as I couldn't do the whole thing, so stopped at the end of the chair bit and did the lying down bit on another day. I'm nearly 8 weeks post-op and this series has been lovely for me so far! I've found a difference in the pressure in my abdomen after these sequences, which makes me feel lighter and more energetic. Thank you Joy x

    Hi Joy, I really enjoyed this video yesterday! But you're right, this is a step up in intensity! Monday and Tuesday were pretty active days for me, so today will be a rest day. :) The cats seem to agree with that decision. P.S. I think the flies in my living room can recognize when there are flies in the videos. They love to "hang out" together, haha.

    • @YogawithJoy
      @YogawithJoy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stef, that's so funny about the flies! Unfortunately when I was filming the first two videos in this series I had my mic on too high (and an annoying infestation of flies!!), so you can hear everything really loudly. Funny that your flies responded ☺️ yes this one is a step up - I've scheduled week 3 for this Sunday, which will seem pretty gentle again. I hope your recovery is easeful. Love, Joy 💛

    Thank you, dear Joy. I have undergone hysterectomy 2 weeks ago and been following your videos ever since. Have moved on to this phase already as I am feeling quite strong. The upright sitting I still do on my sofa though as sitting without support is still not for me. Just love your videos and how you encourage us to listen to our bodies and be supercareful and gentle. I really do, no matter what others say ("I know somebody who has already...after 2 weeks....", "Are you still not your old self...?") and I just wanted you to know that your videos have helped me a lot on my way. Looking forward to phase 3 whenever I am ready for it! Thanks ever so much, dear, Joy. Love and namaste from Germany, Jessi

      Hi Jessi, I'm so pleased you're finding these videos helpful! Two weeks might be a bit early to sit on a chair like that, so it's good you've found a modification on the sofa. It is soooo important that you listen to your body, while moving very gently to strengthen and tone. It's difficult when some people think rushing to heal as quickly as possible is better, though it usually leads to all sorts of complications. I'm pleased you already know to take it slow. You'll heal beautifully! In case you haven't found the post abdominal surgery playlist, here's the link: th-cam.com/play/PLap6D_DFf94VH35zdv1FKO2G7mOJCwcgc.html

      Hi Emily, I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to reply. I'm on holiday and only have my phone with me. So, with the 'pelvic clock' you can very gently keep the pelvic floor engaged as you move around the clock, or, if you have good coordination, you can release the pelvic floor muscles on the inhale, engaging the muscles again on the exhale. Make sure you keep everything gentle and relaxed, when when you're lifting the pelvic floor muscles up, so you're not excessively tightening the area. Does that make sense? Love, Joy 💚

    Hi.. I got my surgery done a month before for ovarian cyst removal and I was thinking of doing these exercises. One thing which I wanted to ask is are we allowed to sit on the floor or not. I have got many suggestions like don't sit in the floor for 2 more months and not to do anything by bending forward. I already have problem if diastasis recti post delivery. It's been 7 years now. Thank u for making these videos. awaiting for ur reply

    • @YogawithJoy

      Hi Rakhi, thank you for your comment 🙏💚🌿 how does it feel if you try to sit up? I know that every surgery is different and after many types of abdominal surgery sitting up after a few weeks is ok. Why don't you try the lying down parts of my videos and only sit up if it feels aright to do so. You're body will tell you if it's too uncomfortable to sit on a yoga mat. Sitting on a chair should be ok from about 3 weeks. Here's my post abdominal surgery playlist, where I have 7 videos for you to try: th-cam.com/play/PLap6D_DFf94VH35zdv1FKO2G7mOJCwcgc.html
      I also have diastasis recti, after 22 years! Once you have healed from the ovarian cyst operation, keep up the abdominal core strengthening exercises, this will really help with diastasis recti and keep the rest of you body from discomfort. Much love and blessings on your healing 🌺💗🌸

      Hi Joy.. i am allowed to sit from the next day of my surgery. I used to sit on bed or chair or sofa but my back especially the hip bone the last part of our spine hurts a lot..
      I have now started taking some calcium n vitamin tablets due to which the back doesn't pain very much but it does sometimes. I have sat on a chair till now and haven't yet started sitting on the floor. N my family has told me not to sit on the floor for next one month bcoz sitting on the floor can worsen the hernia problem. That is y I was asking if I can sit on the floor.
