    That's such a hard one. The Used was my favorite band in Jr high, I was raised Mormon and rebelled against it in my teenage years. Taking Back Sunday is really good, A Decade Under the Influence is so fucking great. The Used were from Orem Utah so they didn't get to grow in a scene that supported them as much. With my personal connection to the Used I just like them so much more. My first tattoo was actually the heart hanging from a noose from the In Love and Death album cover

    toured with the used as a guitar tech 2002. it was my first job after i was discharged from the Army. it was surreal. i went from afghanistan to ozzfest seemingly overnight. while it’s debatable what genre they were, what’s not debated is that they didn’t belong on that tour and were only there cuz jack/kelly liked the band. fun fact: most bands on Ozzfest pay to play. the used did not pay and there was some resentment and sabotage. i eventually got fired as they didn’t play very well live and needed someone to blame…

      @WinedandDined27 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TBS had 2, and one of them came out 2 years before the used first big radio single. The question was who made emo mainstream, not who had more mainstream singles. TBS opened the door for bands like the used and even MCR to really get serious radio play. CWt”E” was two years before All That I’ve Got, which is their first big radio single to my knowledge (I don’t remember hearing the taste of ink on the radio much back then at all). MakeDamnSure (TBS’s biggest radio hit) came out earlier that year that All That I’ve got came out. TBS made emo mainstream, the used and MCR went through that door and became bigger bands bc of it, tho.

    TBS is the band that got me into Emo in 2020. Yes, years after they were making their way on to the scene and long after Emo was super popular, there I was, a lifelong musician , at 39 years old and I found a guitar vid of a dude showing off his avorite Midwest Emo licks and I immediately started digging through a genre I thought I always hated. A genre I despised in my early and mid 20s. Instead, I found what is now one of my absolute fav genres. When I listened to A Decade Under the Influence for the first time , I could not believe what I was missing all these years. Going to see TBS in August. I am absolutely stoked about it. The USED are OK. I just don't feel their stuff like I do TBS. No offense to their fans though.

      "Real Metalcore" only consists of the Belgian H8000 metallic hardcore scene and the late 90s edge metal scene. What is known by "scenecore" is nothing more than alternative rock with questionable metalcore influence. When people try to argue that bands like blessthefall are not real metalcore, while saying that Killswitch Engage are, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake metalcore as btf (plus the butt rock vocals). Real metalcore sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL, and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake metalcore is weak, self-pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL METALCORE are Congress, Morning Again, Eighteen Visions (the only real metalcore band from the scenecore scene), and Skycamefalling. Some examples of FAKE METALCORE are As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine, and Architects METALCORE BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO METAL, POST HARDCORE, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

Next time I saw them, they were on Ozzfest with a shit ton of metal bands. I know they finally found their niche after a few tours but at least they were out there exploring. Taking Back Sunday just went directly to crying teenage chicks and guys that had no self-esteem.

      TBS had their first hit single 2 years before the used first big radio single.
      Edit: source-I too lived thru it.

      @@WinedandDined27 you got the release timeframe for MakeDamnSure wrong. MakeDamnSure was 2006. All That I've Got was 2004. Cute Without the E was 2002 for sure tho, and you're probably right about everything else.
      allow me to spin a Gen Z retroactive perspective on things really quickly though. yeah, sure, Taking Back Sunday were the first actual emo band to become mainstream, but I don't think emo could have become mainstream at all if it wasn't for pop-punk's popularity in the late 90s and early 00s. blink-182 especially influenced the sound of a LOT of those emo bands even tho blink were technically never an emo band. so i think blink-182 made it possible for Taking Back Sunday and Thursday to get big, which in turn allowed bands like The Used, MCR, Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Senses Fail, etc, to get big. that's just my stupid little gen z perspective tho and i bet you're probably gonna gatekeep the shit out of me for it but alas, here we are.

      @@caifabe8050 shit, you’re right haha. I got where you want to be and louder now mixed up as far as release dates. Good catch. My point still stands tho. And I absolutely agree with you about blink being the door opener for all of those bands. I think you’re spot on with that. Shit, I Miss You hitting the radio in 2003 was such a game changer. That was REALLY when you started to hear the used and the like get radio play. But, as you said, blink is decidedly pop punk and not emo, so TBS has to be the band who gets the title of “first mainstream emo band”. But, gun to my head, I Miss You probably broke that sound truly into the top of the billboard type level. That whole self titled album is more post-hardcore than pop punk, actually. It’s basically a post hardcore album straight up, but blink is still the quintessential pop punk band.

    Let me guess. Fin hates them both and thinks all of their fans are cringe and then will rant about it in multiple videos and then wonder why no one likes him.

    Taking back Sunday is the absolute worst live performance I have ever seen in my entire life and that includes drunk people singing karaoke. Adam is an absolute disgrace, the fact that he can charge people what they charge people for his shows that they headline is criminal. I left after the first song and there were dozens of other people leaving with us. By the time I got my vehicle out of valet, they were a ton of people leaving. Go on TH-cam and listen to live performances the last few years. You might as well be listening to Joe exotic drunk singing karaoke

      We don't discuss Brand New anymore.
      But the answer to any question is usually Brand New.
