Sugar Ray did the greatest thing I've ever personally seen at a rock concert. I saw Sugar Ray perform in 1998 at the local AZ music festival "That Damn Show." I went to see Bink-182 but was there for the whole thing including bands I thought were lame like Sugar Ray. The band performing before Sugar Ray was Cake and I was stoked to see Cake. Shortly after starting their first song, someone threw something onto the stage. John McCrea stopped and angrily said, "If anyone else throws something, we're walking off the stage." Cake started performing again and immediately was bombarded with numerous pieces of garbage from the crowd. Cake didn't even finish their first song before walking off the stage to a loud chorus of Boos.
Shortly thereafter, when Sugar Ray took the stage and began their first song, Mark McGrath yelled into the microphone, "We're Sugar Ray and the more $#!% you throw at us, the better we play!" The crowd went nuts and the air became think with trash, shoes, water bottles, and everything you can imagine being hurled at the band. At one point, Mark narrowly dodged a water bottle and yelled, "YEAH! You almost got me! Great shot!" Within 5 minutes people ran out of trash and they played a great set to a thoroughly pumped up crowd. So regardless of what anyone thinks of Sugar Ray, they did the most "punk rock" thing I've ever seen in a live show.
Edit: Originally I wrote that the band was Tool. The band was Cake not Tool. My apologies to Tool and Maynard Keegan for my bad memory.

I went to high school with Mark McGrath. We were in separate friend groups but our paths did cross when we were put in the same CCD class in 8th grade and as a group we decided to go to Knott’s Berry Farm. One MAJOR factor in their success was left out here...in fact, it is THE reason any of us know who they are: The Howard Stern Show. Howard wrote a song when he was a kid called Psychedelic Bee. It was a ridiculous mess written by a child. Sugar Ray did a well produced punk cover of it and submitted it to the Stern Show. Howard loved it and brought them on. Boom. That morning nobody had heard of them. Within days, tens of thousands of people ran out and bought their first record. Brought all the attention to Fly when it was released shortly after.

They were ahead of the curve by realizing that everyone’s fixation of “authenticity vs selling out” was petty and miopic. They dabbled in a lot of genres, and the early albums were fun due to the eclectic vibe.
When the hits came on Floored, 14:59, and Sugar Ray, the vibe was already immaculate.
I went to their concerts with my parents, as a teenager, and we all had fun. I’ll take my kids now to see them play the next time they’re around.
When you think about it - what actually makes a band matter - I think they understood something that a lot of their contemporaries lacked.

True story: my college band helped another band at our college run their merch table while they opened for Sugar Ray. I got to watch Sugar Ray, and during their set, McGrath goes, "Sorry guys, this is too much, I can't do this any more" because his girlfriend supposedly broke up with him or something. He left and the DJ goes, "If I was y'all and I paid to see Sugar Ray I'd be booing!" The whole crowd booed. A couple minutes later, the whole band comes back up and plays a break up song. Gotta admit they got me with that whole bit.

Nobody just "sells out and becomes more popular" you have to have talent and song writing abilities. You have to be able to write a hook be memorable and market themselves.
Selling out implies that its easy.

Loved these guys so much. Me and some friends in the UK lied to a load of record companies in the mid 90s, said we were producing a rock fanzine, could we get any merch or gig tickets - total blag, never expected it to work, but a few weeks later we're sat in the Ristorante Trevi next to The Garage in Highbury & Islington, drinking coffee and eating pie with Roddy and Mark, just before they went on to play next door for their first gig in London. Had a blast asking them dumb questions, trying to keep up the charade, but they called us out - totally cool about it, they slipped us a £20 note to go and buy "some real beer" before the show, we got to hang out, bounced around like wankers with ~200 others when they played, was one hell of a day out. I still owe Roddy for a bet we had on the Tyson/Bruno rematch, but I doubt he remembers that. I do. Fan for life \m/, Nice breakdown, Finn, thanks for sharing, thanks for stirring up some great memories of good times, man.

I see why you two would be friends! You both have authenticity deep in your bones. And a genuine love for music! This video granted me a new perspective on Mark McGrath.
I think I always got good vibes from him and apparently 'loved' him as an 11 yr old girl in Massachusetts of 1998. I remember, I was doing summer arts and crafts at Star Island, and I was given a white sheet as a canvas, and I drew a silver glitter glue heart around a magazine cut-out of Mark McGrath's face hahaha, and the sheet had like orange and red finger paint on it?! I have a printed photo of it somewhere. The 90s were the best!

I loved that tune and, purely out of nostalgia - or pseudo-nostalgia rather than admit I still love it, and Lemonade & Brownies. We see to travel to Glasgow once a month like a long haired Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, go into HMV, randomly buy an album, go sit in Nice ‘n’ Sleazy’s before going out to usually the Rat Trap. I bought Lemonade & Brownies on a whim, so asked the DJ if he’d anything by them and that’s when he played Mean Machine

They were put in a tough spot. They were encouraged to do the Nu Metal thing and go heavier, but chose to do what they wanted and go more light. If they would have went that route, who knows where they'd be now. They might have and a hit or 2 in that era, but then would have faded into obscurity. Or they might be hailed as Nu Metal legends, along side Korn, Limp Bizkit, or Linkin Park in hindsight. One thing is for sure, they would still have been deemed sellouts for jumping on the Nu Metal bandwagon. So they were basically in a Catch 22 situation, which they might have been fully aware of.
