This survey corroborates the fact that we need to be honest with ourselves and we are in the philippines for the girls and the favorable visa situation.
Places like malaysia thailand vietnam mexico and panama run circles around the philippines in terms of infrastructure, food, internet, transportation, medical etc. and are significantly cheaper than the philippines and you get a lot more for your money.
Yes, obviously. But, you missed CAMBODIA - - a wonderful and wonderfully cheap country with pretty great visa rules.
Good Points
I agree 100%
@@seans7228 Haven't been yet. How would you plan a 7 day trip?
@@wanderingdoc5075 I would need to know your circumstances and what you want or what you're looking for. Are you more comfortable in a city or do you like to explore the more remote areas? In a vacuum, I'd say start in the capital, Phnom Penh and talk to people and talk to some tour/visa agencies. Get to know the 172street area and get info from the visa business near Best Central hotel and right next to Sundance Hotel and Saloon. It's an expat area. They're a wealth of knowledge. IF you want to live well and dirt cheap then research Siem Reap. There are lots of vids on YT.
Good list . I love Panama. But want to mix the best of all the world. Filipina wife. Life in Panama. Vacation in Vietnam
Perfect
I am a Finn who lives in Finland. I understand that people with families want to move to Finland. My country is one of the best countries for families with children or new children to be born. For a Finnish man who already has adult children and the financial opportunity to move abroad from Europe, several Asian countries are good options. I have had two long-term relationships in Thailand, which I imagine moving to. I traveled a bit more in Asia and now I'm not as sure as before which country I'm landing in. Indonesia was a positive surprise. Laos was a complete surprise. In addition to these, there are six other countries to be investigated. I spent way too much time in Thailand.
Thanks for sharing your experience
The surveys rarely touch on visas or tax.
Good point
My observation as well !!! > Vietnam for example has no retirement visa. -- That requires a 'visa run' expense - and a pain in the ass - every 90 days ! These extra expenses are required to 'live' there. Unlike Cambodia for example (next door) where a retirement visa over 55 can be had for $180 / year - and no visa runs !!! Certainly much more convenient for an older retired person ? -- And -- many more Khmer people speak English - business signs menus and such are in English as well. + they even accept the USD and many menus have prices in USD's - adding to the ''comfort'' of daily living ? --- Such factors and considerations are routinely ignored in these surveys !!! ( ? ) The language barrier for me is a deal breaker. I want English and a ''comfortable'' stress free retirement & no feeling isolated from not speaking the language. And I know I'm not alone.
I've watched many
of your videos, and this is my first comment on your site.Very informative , Thanks.
Retiring next year at 61 in Canada, and I need to spend winters somewhere warm.
Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailands islands are of interest.
I guess country hopping will give me a better idea 🎉
Thanks for the feedback and let me know if I can help
Malaysia should be in top 5. It's living costs are so low it's only a little more than Vietnam. The gasoline, electricity are lower than Vietnam. Top healthcare services, great food choices(Chinese, Indian, Western), very clean and safe, great infrastructure.
Great point! The methodology required at least 50 Expats survey to respond so it got left out
Thailand and Panama are the top two on my list though I'm currently in the Philippines. I don't know anything about Vietnam. I've researched Colombia a little bit and it sounds interesting.
Thailand would probably be number one if it had reasonable visa rules. BUT, I haven't personally yet experienced the wonderful PI people. Soon tho.
International living says -- "a couple can live well in Panama on $2600 / month including rent" -- > which is double (or more) than the Philippines !!! ( 2024 )
Vietnam has good food
Have a blessed night/day, everyone, and stay safe!

great info Rob. i really benefit from your travel experience. im on the mend from prostate cancer and want to travel this fall to spring. im not looking for the girlfriend/wife thing, only female companionship in places i visit. finances are not a problem for me. im 68 years old 180 lbs and exercise at Planet Fitness every day. i think i might begin with Panama and Colombia. what are your thoughts and services you provide. thanks Rob.

Why wasn’t Cambodia and Laos mentioned? They are both as cheap as Vietnam imo! Cambodia has the easiest long term visa than any country in the world! Guatemala is another country not on the list, many expats live there. Ecuador 🇪🇨 nada, lousy list!
@@roygoad2870 Methodology required minimum response requirements
I heard Cambodia and Laos not so good for older guys. Their healthcare is very sketchy!
Agree 100%
Latin America nations have all become feminist, leftist countries. That’s not good for expats or for men moving overseas…
Cambodia is communist and has an unstable government. Laos is socialist about the same as Cambodia. Some people prefer to live in Democratic countries.
I have always heard Panama mentioned by digital nomads. I’m sure the retirement bias would be much different.
I really take this list with a grain of salt as there are many factors and bias to arrive at a value.
Thanks for the topic. I’ll research a couple of these, although I cannot imagine any better than 🇵🇭 if English language and girls are the grease for your wheels 😂
Agree
That's very good that the Philippines is not at the top of the list. That is very bad when a country is the top destination. Then the wrong people come.
The Philippines generally doesn't have the "dream image" of Thailand, for example.
And that's good for all PH fans. Under the radar is always better.
Agree
It actually does not have a good infrastructure and slow Internet so it will remain behind Thailand until they improve.
BRAVO!!!!!
🙏
Interesting. Thanks. Philippines is still my first choice. Looking forward to seeing Chrissy next time.

How do handle the incessant never ending heat? Do you ever get used to it?
We only us ac 2 months a year in our home 500 ft elevation
There is actually cool times of day and year, even in the lowland cities. And yes a regular person will adapt with in a few months. Also expats generally don't have to commute so you can just head out during the cooler times of the day at your leisure.
They forget that the cost of living can vary based on where people come from. For example, we have free healthcare services in Spain because I come from Norway. It is difficult to rank countries based on cost of living, but I also believe Vietnam is number one. However, one must also enjoy living there. There are so many statistics around; here is one: Malaga tops the list of global living destinations. Malaga, Spain, is now the best city in the world to live in for 2023, according to InterNations, the biggest community for people living abroad. It is not the cheapest, but if you live 30 minutes from Malaga, the cost of living is more affordable. There are so many factors to consider; the provinces in the Philippines are cheaper than the big cities.
Love love Benalmadena
Sadly, Brazil has some serious crime. Rosarita, Mexico is a popular place to buy condos. I live in San Diego and constantly see Americans disappearing and eventually found dead. Somehow little of the expat crime in Mexico makes the international news, but it does make local news.
Thanks for sharing JD
Great video, Rob. Thanks. I have a question. How much money (liquid assets) should a single man set aside before trying the expat experience in the Philippines?
As little as 20k is feasible
The top countries are all very warm countries. With global warming, it can be increasingly uncomfortable to be outside during the day. It is strange that nobody is talking about that. Do all expats adapt well to hot weather or do they simply go out early in the morning and in the evening.
@@mikhailbulgakov1472 We had a mini ice age in 1880 - 1920. Now we have increase in temps by 1-2°C. In 200 years we will have another cooling. That's how these things work. We have had 6 mass extinction events in our history that wiped 95-99% of all species on earth each time. Humans will never perturb or affect planetary and space cycles which are much much bigger than us. We are merely ants on this world.
Adapt and early
@@FlyMeToThePhilippines You could do a video on how expats adapt or not to warm and humid weather. Nobody is talking about the weather even though extreme heat is increasingly frequent.
Since this survery was purely economic, leaving out factors such as the majority of the population speaking English, personal safety, visa issues, and general friendliness of the people....they really are missing some important elements of 'the best places to live for ex-pats' and therefore one has to question it's importance.
Perhaps
Which matrix of Expats are involved
@@albertmorrissette3640 methodology of survey requires 50+respondents- mix of working abroad and retired
@@FlyMeToThePhilippines which countries are the Expats from for this survey, just curious
#1 Mindanao!(Keep quiet)

I call bullshit on colombia, its expensive, roads are bad. infrastructure sucks. To be fair i have been only their for a month and saw a "third" of the country. Drove 4k+ KM. Trough small villages, big cities, mountains etc. Number 2 on the list is a joke. Also my colombian friends who live in the netherlands and in colombia are complaining about the prices of food, clothes, conditions of the roads etc.
You raise some good points
Just to let you know that Kos is in Greece and not in Turkey . That survey is completely wrong : Turkey is extremely cheap . Laos , Cambodia and Myanmar aren't even there and are extremely cheap . Switzerland and Iceland are extremely expensive and aren't even there

No doubt the Philippines is THE most expensive country to live in.....in southeast Asia. In the last 15 years or so, OFW's (Overseas Filipino Workers) have begun to return to the Philippines for retirement and have bought up a large share of the housing market thus driving up prices of houses. The ones that haven't retired yet and that are still working overseas are able to get long-term mortgages (something they weren't able to get in their job in the Philippines) and again....driving up housing prices.
Because of their ability to speak English well (the only country in southeast Asia to do so) and their overall friendliess in the service industry....it makes them prime candidates for hiring overseas especially in areas such as the cruise industry where Filipinos make up over 60% of the workers on these cruise ships. On top of that, you have South Koreans that are buying up condos in the Philippines at an eccelerated rate thus driving up the prices in that market.
Good Analysis
Let's do a mock re-ranking answered ONLY by men about to go live abroad ✊🏻✌🏻😎😁.
TOP 5:
1. Thailand
2. Philippines (?)
3. Cambodia
4. Costa Rica
5. Panama (?)
What's your list?
Bring a Filipina to Thailand
@@FlyMeToThePhilippines Brilliant!
Well I know the WORST place to live if you don't make BANK, that's right here in California where I live! LOL My 32 yr old son bought his first house, actually it's a townhouse. Price tag $1.2 million, now my son's income is in the top 10% in California. But that means 90% can't buy a place like his. No wonder kids in their late 20's and early 30's are pissed off. Uncle Joe drove up the mortgage interest from 3.5% to 7% and than added all that inflation and kids even making $200K a year can't afford to buy a home! I'm looking to move to LOWER my retirement expenses!
🤔
Biden's America - SUCKS - for well over 2/3 of all Americans + all the homeless w/o affordable housing ? > Half of all US citizens now have passports ! Historically only 15% had them.....what does that tell you ? -- Tells me more likely would - if - they could afford to go anywhere ! - - - It now looks to me - like many more people have decided they really liked Trump policies - in hindsight - even if they didn't like the man ? 🤔
Dear Chrissy and Rob - personally, I have always found these comparison sites very misleading, partly they are based on various people's references and as we all know that what one finds good or bad, another finds the opposite. My own experience when traveling and staying around the world is mostly far from the stated conditions in the country in question. Best regards from Denmark
Hi Bent. Thanks for your interest
Very interesting indeed but I tend not to trust these type of lists because people only rank there happiness based on what they know, so a lot of it will based on outdated information. I really think the Philipines should be much higher and you're right that Turkey has gotten much more expensive. Also how can anyone compared the cuture in Turkey or Spain to the Philipines?
I think you just can't compare but for most people the Philipines would be much better becasue of the warm culture, friendliness and lack of language barrier.
👍

Isn't it interesting how people railed on "Imperialistic America" in 1989. Look at Panama now! No more pineapple face!

Why have I heard Panama was 20% to 25% higher cost of living than Phil's. If I recall the higher rental costs added to the difference. But that was a few years ago and I know Phil's rents have increased since that time. So maybe Panama and Phil's rents are on par with each other?
Things have changed a lot. Now the philippines is significantly more expensive than places like thailand vietnam malaysia and panama but provides a much lower standard of living / infrastructure that hasn't kept up.
@@wanderingdoc5075 Wow, thing really have changed and not for the better in the Phil's although I did hear the exchange rate was better than years ago.
@@danielhackney7806 i've been in the philippines myself 8 months and i'm just honest, people come here for two things - the women/top tier dating experiences and the favorable visa policy allowing us to stay for 36 months straight on a tourist visa.

I wonder how they decided which countries to include? The world has 195 countries and the list only has 53. Strangely, Ecuador is left completely out of the list. As is Cambodia. Checking the site, they surveyed over 12500 expats living in 174 countries, yet their list only has 53 countries ranked.
50 plus responses required
Well hell - they ask people that have enough money to live anywhere they want (?) if financial reasons are important ? -- That's hilarious. -- A silly assumption for the many that are not in the $150,000 or more income range ! - - - Also - 4 of the top 5 require Spanish. Not for many - including me. -- That alone - 'for me' - is a deal breaker !!! -- Indonesia has few English speakers and Vietnam is the same ? -- The Philippines really does appear to offer an easier way of integrating into the culture to some degree - because of the language ! Cost of living - really can be as favorable as needed or as extravagant as you can afford there. - - - Plug in your personal criteria and see where you land ? - - - I've yet to see any "ideal" - or - perfect place -?-

For expats in PH, what are your experiences like in stormy/rainy seasons?
Personally, I prefer the rainy season to the hot sun of summer
I got depressions in rainy season just like winter in Canada
@@ezJavaMan it’s not like a dark and dreary, rainy season. It’s quite bright out during the day. It’s just not extremely bright with the sun.
