I lived in Thailand for 12 years .One point i would correct you on is to never give your passport when you are renting a scooter/small motorcycle.Just give them a photo copy plus a deposit usually one or two thousand baht .
It happened to me in Koh Phangan they wouldn’t accept any other form of “deposit” other than the passport which kinda made me feel uneasy but everything went alright, they did try to blame me for a scuff that was already there on the handle good thing I took photos and video all around the scooter 😅
My tip for Thailand, don't spent too much money on luxury hotels, use it for travelling or at least for guided trips. Makes the holiday a lot more interesting and fun, unless you are a 100% beach person.
I’m a physician. I was just in Thailand for the 21st time in the past 14 years. Huge advice to all….buy travelers insurance. The private hospitals are good. The public, not so much. My friend was in a motorbike accident, spent 6 days in a public hospital (he did not have insurance). Horrible experience and care. I literally ran his care in consultation with his doctor. If I was not there, my friend had would have had major issues. Also…totally agree with the motor bike rental stuff. DONT ever leave your passport, leave cash deposit. If they say they won’t take cash deposit, go to another motorbike place. Also, you definitely need an international drivers license. And always wear your helmet. They won’t ticket Thais but foreigners will get ticketed.
For anyone watching, the cheap sunglasses can be dangerous. You need polarized lenses to avoid UV damage, but often cheap sunglasses are just dark plastic, which the open your iris even wider, increasing UV damage. Always get certified polarized lenses!
Seriously doubt that. The cheapest sunglasses I have ever seen are UV blocking. And polarized has nothing to do with UV blocking, those are 2 completely different things.
Bugs and mosquitoes are my biggest concerns while traveling in the tropics! Thank you thank you for your tips and advise. No where else could I find travel tips on such subjects, your video is really helpful!
I wish I listened to your video before I travelled. I took a charger for a motorized wheelchair which was 110 volts and I plugged it in the wall when I arrived in Thailand. Immediately my charger went up in smoke. I was able to take it to an electronic store and they fixed it for a total of 750 bhat
Totally agree with your sunscreen and cash advice. Years ago when we didn't have an ATM card that refunded the fees, we were shocked by the ATM fees over there.
This is the best what to and not to pack video I've seen. However, there are a few things people should know. Cheap clothes often bleed a lot in the wash. Cheap sunglasses often have defects, so examine them carefully. And most important is, NEVER surrender your passport to a hotel or bike rental or any other business. NEVER! Allow them to make a copy or provide them with a copy, but NEVER let them hold your passport! They may put up a fight, but ultimately they know you can refuse. This is a common way to steal passports, so don't take that risk. Also, if you have a smart phone you can keep photos of your picture page and visa stamps on it. This will be fine for most things, if you have the passport back in your hotel room safe.
Bring plenty of cash or as much as you are allowed, for Canada its 10,000 in cash although I would avoid the max amount. Next, bring a carry on suitcase, avoid big cases, bring several pairs of underwear, socks, few pairs of shorts and short sleeve shirts, shaving gear and whatever toilet accessories you prefer. Keep in mind, you will probably buy a large suitcase and more than enough stuff to fill it when you leave on your return trip home. There are shops you can walk in pay a few baht to use a computer, no need to bring a laptop or any electronics unless you have to. Go to a bank, open a bank account and put your cash in, get a bank withdrawal card and use it while you travel around Thailand. Many places will not accept credit cards, DO NOT use ATM's as they eat cards and you are stuck without one. Go to a bank and use over the counter withdrawals only.
@@pathao9719 I think he means a foreigner can go to a bank and the bank will handle the exchange. If he would like to have 8,000 BHT, the bank can charge his Canadian credit card (for a fee) and he will get his BHT. He can pay the credit card off once he is home.
Love Thailand. My one tip is. If you go during March April or May... BE PREPARED. The heat is unexplainable . I am from New England in the United States and I never felt that kind of heat and humidity in my life. Other than that, it is a beautiful country and the people are extremely nice. If you ever get a chance to visit do not pass it up.
do you think i will be able to survive that heat in june? i live in south florida where it rarely gets under 75 haha but i know the humidity in thailand is crazy
Few problems with this video: Don't buy cheap sunglasses. Ever. They provide little to no UV protection. You *DO NOT* need an international drivers licence in Thailand, no matter what anybody tells you. So long as your licence is in English, has a photo and your country is a signatory of the 1949 UN traffic act, which most are, then you are good to go. *NEVER* leave your passport with a rental agency or a hotel. If there is a problem they have got you by the balls and not only that but it's completely illegal not to have your passport on your person at all times as a tourist. Demand that they accept a copy or walk away and find another business.
GOOD ADVISE Deana and Phil - some others - a) when bringing cash ($100 bills for example) make sure they are as clean as possible with no small tear or ink marks as often money changers in Thailand and other countries won't take them b) i like to bring quick drying clothes (shorts, pants, shirts) as i can wash them in the tub and they dry by the next morning - cotton clothing takes longer to dry - thus often i bring no more than 2 of each saving lots of room in the luggage, c) i like to bring some chocolates from home as they are nice gifts to locals who I especially appreciate (even M&M's are welcomed especially if the flavor is not found in Asia, but the gesture alone is warmly received).
For money I estimate a budget for the length of time and add 10% more. Withdraw USD in the States, then exchange half of it when arrive in Thailand. Half way through the vaca count how many Baht you have left (A) and subtract it from what you exchanged (B), then subtract what you have left from that (C). (B-A)-A=C. C=What you used minus what you have left so you will have the same amount for the rest of the vaca. If you are short then exchange more as needed.
@@eli_mb97 NO! The scooter rental company wants your passport as collateral! Give them your passport and they have you by the balls. You cannot leave the country without your passport. Often the scooter company, jet ski rental, hotel or whatever will find damage force you to pay enormous sums of money. Jet ski companies often cover up scratches and other kinds of damage with for example toothpaste. When you return the jetski they find the damage in force you to pay. Again - never leave your passport as collateral! This applies also to hotels. In many countries, foreigners are required by law to have their passports available at all times.

I love Thailand. I always bring paper handkerchiefs, i like to use them as a paper towl after washing hands at the bathroom and when traveling in Thailand i found they always have great, very clean bathrooms but no paper towls. Just respect the people and the royal family, don't do or bring any drugs and behave sensibel - you will be fine, it is a great country full of very nice people.
Great video guys you’re advice is spot on heading back for my third time in October one thing I thought of that you might have mentioned is a travel size packs of wet wipes The bathroom situation in many places even nice restaurants tend to have the towel hanging near the door that everybody has used pretty disgusting so having the wet wipes with you can definitely make your trip feel much cleaner

Great information! The only thing I would add is, if you bring cash, particularly US Dollars, bring $50.00 and $100.00 bills, you will get a better exchange rate.

New subscriber. Great vlog. We travel to Thailand once or twice a year for the past 8 years or so. We started with huge suitcases full of things we never needed and now we take a backpack each and travel light. I laugh when I think of what we use to take. 🤣
Yes, agreed... Been there a couple times, both times swore I would travel lighter NEXT time. I'm coming back again next month, not even going to have a checked bag. Will buy whatever clothes and supplies I need when I get there. In my carry-on bag, the qualifier is absolute necessity AND uncertainty that I can't just get it at an open market or 7/11 upon arrival. Really, that doesn't leave much. Besides, it's good to help out the local merchants. If you want to bring stuff BACK in a checked bag, you can usually find good quality luggage THERE for less than you would pay in the U.S.
Also, be prepared for the heat and humidity, which is like wearing a fur coat to a sauna. That’s *very* hard to adjust to. As a plus, however, many Thai people are very nice people, and showing courtesy and respect in return will go a long way.

Most informative video ever Going to Thailand this week for about 3 weeks What concerns me the most is the cash I'm coming from US So, should I bring all the money I'm planning to spend there in cash then exchange it over there? And course I'm not gonna carry all the cash with me at all time Should I just leave most of the cash in hotel safety vault? Is the vault safe?
If you are going to bring cash you get the best exchange rate with larger bills and also the bills need to be free of defects, as close to new as possible. If any of your bills have creases in them some exchange kiosks won't accept them. If you are in Bangkok there are a few places that give you the highest Exchange rate. A google search will tell you where. If you are in Bangkok Taxis are relatively inexpensive, make sure they use the meter. Using the motor bikes and Tuk Tuk's are annoying in terms of smell and pollution. One thing that you won't probably learn until you get there is during rush hour some Taxi's will refuse to drive you to your Hotel if they know they are going to be stuck in traffic for a long time. If you are coming from the airport or going not so much an issue because the longer trip makes up for the inconvenience. So try to get a Hotel that is near the transit line that can take you close to your destination. It gets ungodly hot in Bangkok.
Just a quick heads up on what not to bring for smokers, they are very strict on the amount of cigarettes you can bring into Thailand and will fine you heavily if you are over. Also vapes are illegal in Thailand so they aren't supposed to be brought in. As regards driving licenses I have been stopped and checked at least 5 times and my UK license has always been ok. The one time I didn't have my license on me my wife and I swapped seats in full view before driving through the checkpoint. The police asked my wife why we swapped and she told them it was because I didn't have my license on me and he just waved us through. Crazy country but I love it.
Viewed from start to finish, a very excellent points video, I agree with you and I'm supporting your channel because your facts are straight... Best regards/Ned
This is very helpful, Thank you for the time and effort to film this. I'm planning a trip in January 2023 - for the sim card, can you purchase at the airport and use across Thailand? Do you get a local number to text with? Also, where do you get a debit card with no fees? Thanks again!
It's nice to see the answers to good questions. Did you ever rent a house there orjust hotels? What is the best area to live in there for retirement community do you know by traveling or talking to folks
if you have a 6 month visa or one year visa you can open a bank account here in thailand and then you can just transfer your money from the country you come from and then it costs nothing to withdraw from atm

3:30 It amazes me how so many people think they need to bring cash. High risk. Use an ATM and pay the fee. And when you use a credit card you'll find that most places charge you 3-4% fee for using a credit card.

Good to know! We don't smoke, so we had no idea about the cigarette laws. Thanks for sharing!
Deana, greetings from home. I’ll be in Thailand in 3 weeks and happened on your video. So funny! Very informative video. Thank you!

Please do not use cheap sunglasses. Macular degeneration etc can cause uncurable blindness in a long run. Especially if your eyes are light color.
Check out trans fats causing macular degeneration and skin cancer.
make sure the CE logo is on the glasses!
Thanks Mar

This is very helpful, Thank you for the time and effort to film this. I'm planning a trip in January 2023 - for the sim card, can you purchase at the airport and use across Thailand? Do you get a local number to text with? Also, where do you get a debit card with no fees? Thanks again!
I’m going December this year and I’m having the same questions as you… I hope they see and respond asap!
😊
It’s the 3 pin British system in Malaysia and buy the 2 pin front with 3 pin back if you are British
It's nice to see the answers to good questions. Did you ever rent a house there orjust hotels? What is the best area to live in there for retirement community do you know by traveling or talking to folks

Thank you guys im going to Thailand january
if you have a 6 month visa or one year visa you can open a bank account here in thailand and then you can just transfer your money from the country you come from and then it costs nothing to withdraw from atm
UOB open bank accounts for all.

Thanks for this video, its helps so much. I have a few clarifying questions: When you talk about taking a copy of your passport are you just referring to taking a photocopy of it? Also, how do you get an international license?
just discovered your channel what a great one ! thx for sharing tips
I love thailand , thanks for best clip.
I loved you video going to Thailand next month so I will watch it again. Question I will arrive in Bangkok and spend some time in Phuket. But what are some other places in Thailand that I might want to visit?
Phi phi island!
Great video. Very informative. Thanks! Anything you can add about Drone usage over there?
Question about the copy of a passport you mention. We are planning a trip to Thailand which is why I ask. Thanks

Make sure your cell phone is network unlocked or Thai SIM card won't work. They also support e-sims in Thailand.

bring large sizes... above M, or above usa 36 and shoes above usa 7-8 large bra, tailor made suits often offered cheap, but choose better fabric.
Great information in this video. Well done, you two. You're a good team.
Thank you so much. Very helpful video 😊
Well done you 2 some good information there . Thanks
Thank you! Very helpful.
My partner and I are travelling to Thailand from South Africa, I was worried about the adapters and all the cash that needs to be withdrawn. This was fun to watch and SUPER helpful as I was overthinking the things I need to pack! Thank you so much!
Hope you join Songkran festival on 13-15 April , the most fun water festival in Thailand💦enjoy the Songkran festival everywhere in Thailand
3:30 It amazes me how so many people think they need to bring cash. High risk. Use an ATM and pay the fee. And when you use a credit card you'll find that most places charge you 3-4% fee for using a credit card.
This is genuinely helpful advice
Thanks guys. Very helpful!
I love it..what is the nearest airport in bangrak Thailand? I appreciate your input..i will be traveling early next year.
If you're traveling internationally BKK is a close big airport. There are a few smaller airports around as well. Safe travels!
There are many many cities with airports. Also train stations. Bus travel is the cheapest way to get around in Thailand.
Great video..Question In getting the local SIM card cab this be done with an iPhone from the US?
