Some pine branches come with a cone or cones attached. They grow that way. You don't even have to use wire.

Any extra tips for finishing the back of it so it doesn't scratch the front door? I would be worried about the stray ends of the wire.

How long does the leaves remain fresh? Do you use any techniques to keep it from drying?

It depends on where you display your wreath and how your wreath is made. Wreaths made on a moss covered frame will last longer if the moss is kept moist. Keep them away from drafts, too. You can mist your wreath's foliage as well to prolong it's life. Wreaths displayed outside last longer if the weather is cool or cold and if they're displayed in a sheltered area.
