Hey guys, thanks so much for watching today's Rivian coverage! If you're wondering where the R2's at, we have that over on TFLnow: th-cam.com/video/7vjT5jA1SPI/w-d-xo.html
Guys what's going on?. Ford has had a Tesla supercharger adapter available for over a week now and you guys haven't even touched that subject.. That's probably one of the most important stories in the EV World right now. Not to mention Tesla has certain superchargers with built-in CCS adapters for non- Tesla vehicles available now. I really can't believe that you guys haven't done anything with that. I know you pulled the trigger too soon on selling the lightning, but I'm sure you could find somebody to let you borrow a Maki or a lightning
You do realize they stopped construction on the Rivian plant here in Georgia? I’m sure once they beg for more money, the govt will always do what they do and give away more tax payer money to an industry that has yet to deliver.
This is what we need. We don't need giant SUV's. They are filling a void in the market and I'm all for it. Bravo Rivian.
Agreed! Mid size and even smaller!!
Exactly! An EV for the every day person!
Just need to get it to market quick
There's a reason why there is a void and it has nothing to do with the OEMs. It's all about customers like you who overwhelmly prefer bigger vehicles. I agree it's all cool but the small niche of customers like us will never be able to justify Rivian to continue to make a smaller vehicle like the R3 in the long run especially if they want to make a profit.
I agree, Tommy was calling the R3 "miniscule", but, I guarantee that with that boxy shape, it won't be cramped for 4 people. He also compared it to a VW Golf, and I am 6 feet tall and not svelte, but I actually fit fine in a recent Golf - despite the Golf's exterior dimensions all being *clearly* smaller than the R3 - when you stand next to a recent Golf/GTI, the very tidy exterior envelope is impressive-ly small, but then you get inside there, and it's like some kind of magic trick.
The R3x looks like a Russian Lada Niva. I want one!
Way back in my youth, I remember a friends father had a Lada Niva with a 300zx engine.
Awesome.
Not just any Lada Niva but a Lada Niva Safari! I see the same thing!
@@Herkapotamus Yeah they just dont make them like this anymore.
It makes it even more attractive.
During the event, I placed a deposit for an R2.
Then I cancelled it as soon as the R3 was revealed. It reminds me (in the best possible way) of my first car - a Subaru Justy. Which was an off-roading beast for being such a tiny underpowered vehicle.
The R3 will absolutely be my next vehicle to replace my Mach-E.
I have a Mach-E and been looking at replacing it. I was leaning towards the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N once it releases here in the U.S. but this R3X looks very cool. I wonder what the performance numbers are for it with a tri-motor design.
So, Rivian just osborne the R2 before it even ships by announcing the R3/R3X. I'm sure a lot of R1S sales have also been osborne by the R2. This is not good for Rivian near term.
@@kenchow8213 While I'm sure there are people for whom the R2 is a great value, R1S has three rows, and is just plain bigger and more capable. I'm sure this will eat a little bit into their R1S orders, but it is a different market of vehicle - like Tesla Model X vs. Model Y.
And the R1T still has no R2 equivalent. If you want a compact electric pickup, R1T is still the only option. (Although I'd kill for a 1-row, 6' bed R3T that can tow >5000 lbs..)
@@jasonwilkinson8784it’s going to be insane if the r2 tri motor is sub 3 0-60. The presentation made it sound like the same motors were being used. I’d guess less battery capacity since the wheelbase is 5in less.
R1S is way more capable than what the R2 will be. The R1S is equipped with air suspensions paired with a hydraulic swaybar, things that people who use it for heavy off roading will find useful and has a 3rd row. R1S will remain flagship and have features that R2 just won’t have.
The images online of the R3 show it using a NACS connector. The R2 as a small pickup like the Maverick would be amazing.
This little R3X is the bomb! Totally want this car. My first EV!
If you don't mind waiting 5+ years for production
@@jamespaul2587 If Rivian takes this long they will be out of business.
@@bartl.7390 possibly, I think they should have started with R2 sized vehicles as that market is much larger
Since R2 deliveries are 2026,I'd say no sooner than summer 2027 for the R3x.
@@makatron and that's assuming R2 is on schedule, and actually produced in volume
What a home run if they can really get them built at reasonable price.
no they can't. not for prfit at least
@@chartedtravel1776Gotta pay off the factory and R&D first. then watch out
R3x is absolutely amazing looking... i want one
Me too.
Reminds me of an old VW Golf 4x4. Love it
You lost me at “old”. NOT INTERESTED!!!
Now we are talking! Small electric SUVs, flashbacks to the Soul and Kona EV , and EV with a smaller footprint. I wants me an R3X!
Except it's not small!
@@van_trippin5260its definitely small vs the average new car in the US
similar in size to a model Y apparently, they are huge. @@mattbrew11
@@mattbrew11 You're right, Matt. I don't think 'trippin' looked far enough to see that I was talking about the R3X.
@@van_trippin5260🤡🤡🤡
This is a great looking vehicle. I love hatch backs, and the rear of this looks like a lot like a Lancia Delta.
I remember having a toy VW Rabbit car as a kid that was yellow in color. I had that thing jump off of everything and rallied it like crazy. The R3X looks like the rebirth of that Rabbit VW. So awesome.
Great look for Rivian
I came for the R2 but now I want an R3. Such a rad design.
Totally rad.
It is a NACS connector, as MKBHD's video was shown opening the R3's port.
R3 hits it out of the park
Tommy!
Hey, buddy. Thanks for getting out to Southern California to witness firsthand these unveilings.
This is super cool!
EV's getting better and better. These look great.
still same range under 300 miles, still more expensive then GAS cars, still polluting more then gas cars. what is the point?
The NACS port should be moved to the driver side rear for final production. This would make it more compatible with existing Tesla Superchargers and more convenient to the driver.
If the supercharger network is serious about drawing more charging business their equipment should be retrofitted with longer cables and upgraded to charge newer EV's at maximum speed.
@@hwirtwirt4500 The V4 Superchargers have longer cables, but there are still tens of thousands of V2 and V3 Superchargers in place. I believe doing both a standardized driver rear charge port and upgrading the infrastructure are necessary.
They should put one on each side.
@@astar2012 If you want to become a standard you must accommodate all vehicles. Gas stations have long enough filler hoses to service any vehicle. Tesla's short sightless by cheaping out on a ridiculously short cable is coming back to bite them in the ash. Stop with the lame excuses please.
@@hwirtwirt4500 Excuses would imply that I wouldn't expect Tesla to change. I'm looking at this from a practical standpoint. The end objective should be Tesla updating all their Superchargers to V4 to accommodate either side of a vehicle. The reality is that changing out tens of thousands of superchargers is going to take a long time. Since the Tesla Superchargers are basically unrivaled in the industry this leaves us with a parking mess for charging for the foreseeable future since Tesla is still installing V3 chargers in the US and would be very capital intensive for them to change out all those charging stations. To me, in the short term, it seems easier to adapt to the existing network that everyone wants to use than to wait for Tesla to get everything changed over.
Glad to see Rivian isn't being stagnant, especially with the slowdown in EV sales lately.
What slowdown?!
@@jamesvandamme7786 Rivian, for example, sold significantly fewer vehicles in the last 3 months of 2023 vs the previous 3. Ford has had to cut the production of the F150 Lightning due to falling demand, and the Mustang Mach-E is also experiencing falling demand. These are just a couple of examples and I'm not talking about year-over-year sales.
I placed two reservations for R2s today and I will definitely be after that R3X on day one. Extremely well done Rivian
How are so many people so wealthy to afford all of this?!
@@JohnnyZenith i dont really view this cars as expensive compared to the car market at large.
I can’t speak for anyone else but if you actually care, my path to success was really tough. I was homeless most of my childhood and parentless at 16. Dropped out. Walked past a big high rise project one day and was like a bug to a blue light to the site and sound of a welder.
After some time being mentored how to weld I realized I was terrible at it but electric was also fascinating. I learned everything I could about that. Bought a car. Lived in it. Got my GED. Got my degree going at night over 6 years. Became a journeyman. Learned about solar. Loved solar. By that time I was 27. Started my own solar business and a little over a decade later here we are. Long story short I worked my butt off and failed and continue to fail more than I succeed.
@@JohnnyZenithit’s $45k -$7.5k tax credit. You’ll have a hard time to find a regular suv with combustion engine for that price.
R3x is a real pocket rocket; it has a Renault 5 turbo (rally version) vibe to it
r3/r3x is MUCH bigger than Renault 5... although i like it as well.
R3X wow! Great vehicles!
NGL I got pretty excited when they showed off a SECOND all new vehicle (and a third, if you count that performance trim)
Red tow hooks, must be legit.
3 Electric motors, kind of overkill for the type of vehicle.
@@Neojhun True car enthusiasts never put "overkill" and "vehicle" pertaining to powertrain ever together.
That approach/departure angle! 😮
i feel like this silhouette is closer to what we wanted the " blazer" to be when it returned. squared off and rugged
I will place a deposit for an R3X the moment it becomes available. Looks amazing.
That itty bitty looks so cool. Except it’s not actually so little, it’s just a normal size.
Take that, Bronco Sport
Bronco sport sorely needs an AWD hybrid.
Very cool! Nice first impressions video. Nice to see your Omega getting lots of screen time, too. 😊 (Sweet!) Which reference is that? Love the band.
Let's applaud him for keeping his cool. People saw him filming and had no manner but he ignored and kept on. Not me.
I absolutely love the look of this! Better than anything I’ve seen in years! I want to own one of these in my life for sure.
Damn. That was a really professional walk around. Good job
Sign me up for the R3X, that's the first car I've been excited about in a long time.
I can already envision how many of these R3’s we are gonna be seeing here in Colorado. These models are very well done, I still love the look of the R1S the most but they are opening up to a bigger market now. Short sellers in full cope mode now.
Not many... gets too damn cold in Colorado to bother having an EV.
@@stuartstogdill2406there’s a lot of Teslas and Rivians here in Evergreen
Bro said throw some bows at these events. 😂💪🏾💪🏻💪
this is a Smash hit...
I'm ordering...
lancia delta integrale vibes and loving it...
although... would like a RIvian Badge delete on back hatch option… a little much
I just want to say.. it's awesome you managed to do your thing, while all those people were around.
Great commentary!
The "R3x" (REX? ) looks really cool... Some adult finally talking about their favorite dinosaur?
Love it! Reserved an R2, but that R3X is the one I really want.
Amazing can't wait to drive one of these.
A trimotor setup on a dirt track will be a wild ride! Curious if the frint axle will have a limited slip differential
I never understood the glove box criticism with the Rivian R1T and S. When was the last time you opened your glovebox? The one time I did was to access the owner's manual to figure out how to reset the memory seats in my car. I've had my car for over two years. The underseat storage works as a perfectly good substitute.
Really love the way Rivian is fleshing out their design language... the DNA is obvious.
Very clever.
I like what I see. Have you looked into the Edson conversion.
Very cool! I love the lines!
I just picked up a Model 3 for a few years. R3X is perfect replacement as a quick small daily.
That's for me! I roll alone.
I wonder why the NACS Rivians went with a passenger side charge port? You’d assume new models with NACS would go driver rear charge port placement.
NOBODY needs to cater to tesla snob preferences. The gas pumps are standardized and every manufacturer should feel completely free to put them wherever they like. If it disrupts stalls, oh fking well. Tesla has to make all the cables longer
Driver’s side is terrible for street charging. Ports should never be on the driver side.
@@NeberheimUs folks who don't charge on the street want it on the drivers' side.
For looking so production ready I'm surprised it's so far away from market!
I love the look of the R3 and R3X. Hopefully they make it so people can afford one.
what about RIT is there any updates on the truck
It's as if a Golf Mach 1 went into the future and came back as a Rivian Adventure Vehicle - Absolute home run on the R3X. I also appreciate how the R2 retained the same look as the R1 given the level of respect there is for the design. Now just nail the quality and margins while also delivering quickly (easy, right? ;-) and this Co will shine. Well done Team Rivian as the amount of work that went into these is evident.
They killed it. A Rivian for everybody. Smart
It looks like a mix between the Delta S4 and Renault,I like that it has a regular center display.
The Honda e. Back end. Very iconic.
I want a 2 door RWD/AWD R3 variant! I will settle with the 4 door. Looks awesome Rivian!
Exactly what I want and need.
The wheelbase is 5” shorter than the R2, but the overhangs are small, and by my image analysis it is in the Bolt EV or EUV overall length. I absolutely love it. Might be my Bolt replacement in a few years.
Were TFL are work-truck week ?
Did you see the Morgan Olson electric (EV) C250e "Last-Mile" delivery van
that is based on RIVIAN drive-train components ?
It was showcased at the Indianapolis NTEA Work Truck Show, 2024.
Interior on the x is sickkk
Definitely could see having the entire Rivian family in my driveway/garage when my kids get to driving age.
I freakin love the R3X! I wish it was launching in parallel with the R2, but I understand why it’s coming afterwards.
The R3: My husband says it looks like an ‘81 Rabbit. 😂 I think it is absolutely adorable. Totally retro cool yet modern. This is the “ID Buzz” for the urban outdoors-type small families/singles/emptynesters. I might have to reserve one. ❤ I learned to drive a stick in a ‘77 Rabbit. 🤔
R3 is an electrified AMC Gremlin with a Rivian front end.
R3X is an 1983 AMC Eagle SX/4 with a Rivian front end.
Looks good!
I definitely like this R3X. Can I fit a gas generator and 5 gallon tank in the front trunk?
They nailed it. 👏
Awesome looking!
Love the R3!!!
Super excited for both these models if the R3 has 4-5k towing capacity I am SERIOUSLY interested
This R3 are what I'm really interested in. Small agile EVs
The base R2 for $45k is single motor small battery with 270 miles, then the larger battery is over 300, but I don’t know exactly how much. I’m trying to figure out what it can tow with dual motor and the larger battery.
The R3 is really interesting. Both cars have all the seats fold down flat including the driver and they have a bunch of accessories already like a rooftop tent and a bike rack that can be put away in the frunk, and a cargo box that looks like it folds flat, and a camp kitchen with induction stove that might go in the hitch, but connects to the J3400 (NACS) plug for V2L power output.
I figure since they had the off road tires on the R2, they put street tires on the R3, since the R3X would be the choice for going off road, but I think the R2 and R3 probably come with either set of tires. I watched Marques Brownlee go through all the cars with RJ that had a little more info than the reveal. I think it will eventually all be on the website but I was having trouble getting on it, but I at least got my reservation in after I said I wasn’t going to reserve anymore EV’s
Will the taillight be no bueno, as it’s attached to the gate?
They'll sort it out.
Hurray....finally things are getting down to a more manageable size.
The R3 was absolutely a "one more thing" moment for Rivian. I really hope they succeed, because I certainly would love to get my hands on one.
Rivian finally brining a hatchback form factor to the EV market is something I've been wanting for years. Can't believe it took this long, especially with the rumoured pricing.
Pretty cool, I like the X in a truck. But I need buttons not all screen control.
the rivian r3 looks a lot like a hyundai ioniq 5, and that is a good thing. both reveals look really good for rivian
I’m not an EV fan but I do really like everything that Rivian is doing and especially this R3 and X
Looks nice BUT......Where and how fast am I going to "fill it up with electrons"..........interested but not practical yet......I'll keep my ice cars until there is an AMPLE charging stations in my local 7/11 and through out Hwy 95
"Gotta throw some bows at these events" 😂
Exactly VW Golf is exactly what I saw when they brought this out! Looks Great! Great Utility as well
I really really really hope the front seats also fold all the way down on the R3. I also wish they’d move the charge port to the other side. Otherwise, I love the rugged hot hatch. Giorgetto Giugiaro must be proud.
The better Bolt EV dependent on range?
For those wondering about pricing, MKBHD had a brief interview with RJ in which they discussed R2/R3. It works as expected. R1 series as the flagship, R2 as the mid-range, and R3 as the entry level. That said, RJ confirmed that R3 would be cheaper than R2 - but by how much? We don't know. I'd expect a $30k-36k sticker for R3, with R3X sitting about $40k. I expect at least a $5k price differential from R2 to R3... And yes, this also confirms R3 is not just a concept. It's actually happening. It's just a matter of when.
I put in my order for the R2 but I also want the R3X! The thing is hot!
The best reveal of the year so far, last year Toyota gave us the Tacoma, GX, Land Cruiser and Grand Highlander, this year is Rivian’s year 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
How is Rivians service infrastructure? Do they have repair/body facilities nationwide?
The R3X is intriguing.
Definitely R3X. I need it.
My first thought when seeing the back of the R3 was Dodge Omni
Is Rivian coming to the UK with these newer models? 🤔
yup the rear of R3 looks like a lancia. but the split tailgate seems too heavy and complicated.
Heavy? Damn you got some serious superpowers to determine the weight
More than the lower price (although of course I like that too), I'm always excited to see smaller, reasonably-sized new cars announced! It has a sportier look than R1 and R2, and will be much easier to maneuver and park in urban/suburban areas as well as narrow country/wilderness roads!
Not only does it look fantastic I bet that little R3X is going to be FAST.
Digging the dodge omni rear end shape.
This is the first time I ever said “I want a crossover!” But realizing I drive a GTI I guess I shouldn’t be surprised
An R3 with CarPlay would be an insta-order for me
I am intrigued by the R3 but need to know more about the price to see if it will get me out of my cheap Leaf.
Same, the R3 has got my attention and if I'm going to transition to my first EV, this might be it.
