Spectacular design - will be my next vehicle purchase for sure, if they can deliver on the $45k price tag. Other than that, it’s perfect. I can’t wait to get one!

As an R1S owner, I placed an order immediately. I LOVE my R1S (pre-order pricing), however, I don't NEED this big of a vehicle. What it will come down to, is towing capabilities, the R1S is the BEST vehicle I have ever driven or owned. Now, Joe you missed a TON of additional features that are STANDARD on the R2.
I had the Volvo recharge. I have always loved the look of the Rivan. I am so excited the R2 has come out. I have already put down my deposit. I count the day's untill I own.
One comment, I'm also 6 ft tall and I noticed the rear tail gate seems to hang a bit low, like I'm going to hit my head frequently. Rivian should consider extending the lift height a few more inches, as much as feasible.
I like it a lot. I even went and sat in a current gen Honda CRV to get a feel for the size as they are very similar. I like everything about the car except the full glass roof and the lack of real door handles from the inside. I'm a button guy and really wish the climate controls were real rather than in the software. Having said that, I think I could get over all of this because this thing looks awesome. I reserved one.
We recently leased a 2024 CRV Sport Hybrid, we were on the fence about getting an electric vehicle. My wife who drives it, doesn't like the interiors of the Teslas. So we got the CRV as a stopgap between now and when other EVs are released with the NACS charging port. I showed her the R2 and she liked it. So with 2 years left on our lease. Unless something else comes out that could possibly compete with the R2, I think this will be our first EV. I love the R3x and would love to own one, reminds me of my Golf/Rabbit GTI days.
I reserved one. My only concern when i saw the R2 in Miami - is the hatch height - Joe, you are 6'0 and I am 6'2" and you were hunching over when the hatch was open it needs to open higher.
Having seen you review the R2 and the Macan EV. Which one do you like more overall? I know you cant compare driving dynamics with the prototype R2 but curious on the aesthetics aspect what you think? Price difference is quite substantial, 45k R2 compared to 30k more for the base Macan EV.
Great looking vehicle. Love the moving rear glass. This car almost looks like Volvo designed it. I would love having this vehicle. A winner if they can meet the 45k price. I sincerely doubt this car will ship below 60k. Love the haptic feedback scroll wheels.
Reserved mine as soon as I learned it was coming! The biggest thing I'm curious about though is the quality of the sound system...such an audiophile that really does make or break a car for me. Fingers crossed!
Yes, the vehicle is well thought out and stylish. I am respectfully saying here that if Rivian (or any other EV maker) wants to attract middle class US buyers, the price must be competitive with economical ICE cars and marketed to people who use cars for inner city driving only due to charging hassles. Plus, the tires wear out faster on these heavier cars, and if/when a fire occurs, it cannot be put out by conventional means. And, middle class buyers are not able to afford new battery packs for these vehicles. There is much potential for these cars, but IMHO, there use is limited until the above issues can be successfully addressed.
There are still plenty of 2012 and 2013 Tesla Model S on the road today (a neighbor of mine daily drives his still), replacing batteries isn't as much of a concern as you might think. I'm not sure of Rivian's warranty, but Tesla offers 8 years/120k mile warranty I believe, which I think shows their confidence in the parts. The average American replaces their vehicle every 5-6 years which is much shorter than the warranty on the battery. I don't even think ICE vehicles offer warranties as long as Tesla does for their batteries generally. My ICE vehicle didn't even have a powertrain warranty as long as Tesla covers their batteries lol, I think it was around 5 years/100k miles.
Yeah I hear the common concerns about EVs and as an EV owner I honestly think they're exaggerated. My EV is about 6 years old now and it's still going strong. Very reliable. I have never thought about range or battery fires or how expensive it was. Do I wish it were cheaper? Sure. Do I feel like I overpaid? Nope. It's the best car I've ever driven. It's been worth the money. And it pretty quickly convinced me that I'm never going back to ICE vehicles if I can help it. The one gripe I do agree with is the tires wear out faster than on ICE vehicles. And that's annoying. But overall I am very much looking forward to the R2 as my next vehicle.
RJ and Frank, please provide some RWD trims at launch. I really cannot afford anything more than 45k and I am not waiting for R3. I am a 2021 & 2023 R1T quad owner through my parents (who have an EEAP vehicle as well). I am 23 year old college graduate that is currently employed by Rivian and living at home temporarily. My configuration will be RWD. I understand that the more expensive ones (Dual + Tri) need to be prioritized for profit reasons. But RWD will be easier/quicker to manufacture. Also a lot of the markets that you will be successful in (especially in the beginning) are warm/non snow states. Those regions will be configuring RWD more and if the goal is to get as many in the market as possible, then maybe RWD should also get some prioritization too.
A light weight and less expensive 2 door T version that will fit into my garage and budget would be really nice. A solar bed cover would be the cherry on top!
Just wish those headlights would finally be vertical. The current design is just as iconic as it is goofy looking. I did like most other choices they made with this vehicle. You mentioned that the storage capacity would remain the same, even with the tri-motor version but I'm wondering if that remains true with the larger battery option. It's nice that they gave you the price for the cheapest version but I'd really like to know the cost of the highest spec option.
Great review, so much attention to details . I dont need to go to the dealership after this review 😂😂. Oh u forgot a big feature the front passenger seat folds flat down for extra storage
Tesla made a huge mistake opening up their Supercharger network to competitors, giving away their competitive advantage of the largest most reliable coast to coast charging network. Even a Tesla owner like myself would go Rivian or Porsche now that they're getting NACs charging.
That's the only reason I'm here entertaining the idea of a non-Tesla as our next EV. Supercharging my Tesla hasn't been an issue but with 3rd parties and placement of their charging ports, that can easily become a problem.
A mistake for them? I'm sure they took a long, hard look at their network and decided it was the best move. And it is. It's better to have more options when charging your vehicle. Rivians will soon charge with both CCS and NACS. You're gonna have a lot more charging stations to choose from. And it won't be on Tesla to do all the work to maintain an open standard.
I don't think it's a mistake for them financially. They make money every time a Rivian, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Mercedes, etc. charges, and that will add up quickly (my own assessment, I'm not an expert). That said, it's definitely going to make Superchargers a lot less pleasant to use; they can already get quite full. They need to build out more of them. I own a Model Y but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE an R2, can't wait to see them out in the wild
I’m afraid to buy this car because I’m gonna have to replace its engine of warranty in about 15 years. That’s how you sound. They complete nothing. Most batteries perform above expectations for 10 to 15 years. Most warranties are 8 to 10 years. Incredibly rare to have anything wrong with your battery besides an act of god. It’s basically using a gas car in those situations. I’m sure you’re gonna follow up with how EV’s blow up. Even though that’s just as rare or happens even less then gas cars catching fire. I understand how scary new technology can be there should be concerned, but don’t overexaggerate..
There are plenty of other people out there with decades of experience in the car business. They're all saying the same thing. It's a matter of time before Rivian goes bust. It's a cool-looking car and it looks to be quality made. However that doesn't change the fact that they are losing tons of money and have no plan to reverse that. Some of their manufacturing plans have been put on hold. And word in the automotive field is that it's not temporarily on hold. It's permanent.
@@smarticus6384 let me put this in context for your. I have a 2015 ford Fusion with 77,000 miles. Does it sound that old? Not really, but it’s almost 10 years old and out of warranty by now. Now let’s say anything other than the transmission or engine breaks it’s probably going to be $500-$1500 to fix. Now let’s say the engine blows, a used one may be 4 or 5K to put in, now let’s say the transmission goes out maybe 3 or 4K. In all likelihood these things won’t happen either for another 5-10 years at such low mileage per year. Because engines don’t degrade like batteries do. Now let’s say I bought a 2012 Tesla Model S instead like an idiot. After a decade the batteries got old or are about to fail. Well I just googled the price and I found an invoice in a forum. “the price, clearly stated on the invoice, is $20,000 for the battery alone. In fact, I get $20,333.80 for parts alone, plus whatever labor would really have been.”
I think they did great but the R2 should have been on the market yesterday since Rivian needs more affordable models, but I will be pleasantly surprised if when the R2 launches it does actually end up starting around 45k. Also I am surprised Joe went the full review without mentioning R2-D2 once 😁
Rivian is doing a nice job of keeping the brand identity of the original while evolving it just a bit. I like the angularity of the design, pretty bold in the styled-like-a-bar-of-soap current EV space. Let's hope the $45K is real and not some fake future price of a vaporware model that Rivian never actually produces. I'm guessing that a big-battery tri-motor will be pushing well into the mid $70k range. I wonder if Lucas Films needed to clear the R2 name. I was looking for C3PO to pop out of the frunk there at one point. And that steering wheel in action is starting to look like a giant video game controller. Are they doing a truck off this chassis too. A smallish, crew cab truck based on this platform might just be a hit too. That smallish truck market is starting to heat up.
I love this car - BUT - the nearest repair for a Rivian is 2 hours (South San Francisco, or San Jose) away from my house... until they create more service options, I'll have to buy something else. We own a 2019 all-election Kia Niro now (love it), looking to upgrade in 2026, 2027.--------- Mr Raiti - you did not fold the rear seats down so we could see the amount of storage, and if the seats fold flat. I use my vehicle to sleep in the night before I go backpacking, and a flat floorboard is an important consideration for me. Otherwise, good video.

No windshield wiper for the back window. That's gonna be a problem. You won't be able to see during the rain.
just drive forward.
I reserved one day 1. Can’t wait until they start delivering in a few years!
One comment, I'm also 6 ft tall and I noticed the rear tail gate seems to hang a bit low, like I'm going to hit my head frequently. Rivian should consider extending the lift height a few more inches, as much as feasible.
Love it! Reserved one on reveal day...word!
Joe: Have the e blue R1S. Rivian is the real deal. If the EV haters would actually review and drive an R1S…they would change their mind
I totally agree with you Mathew!
I need a V12 engine and Italian leather, not this golf cart.
@rachelgreen1368 For daily driving? Yeah, right.
@@rachelgreen1368 well this golf cart will smoke 99% of v8’s or v10’s
Love the R2 and am super interested in the R3X. Looks like they nailed the designs on both. Hope they can deliver.
I always liked Rivian, and this is solid. Excited for the R3 in a little while, the profile looks amazing
I am so glad that you are liking this one Adam!
Joe and Lori and Steve keep up the good work real true and I love the video real true 👍
From what I heard Rivian doesn't sound very well!
@@RaitisRides Wasn't too impressed with our friends' R1S...hopefully Rivian realized it needed some improvement!
Was planning on upgrading my Polestar 2 to the polestar 4 next year; not anymore, I’ll get the R2 dual motors.
Thank god someone makes a practical SUV ev…I am getting one… It’s practical and can do bit off-road for family adventures and it’s fast… 3 in 1.
Where is the rear wiper located? Does it appear when you need it?
Of course the car starts at 45k. Thats what RJ said during the reveal
Hmmm let's us know
Just reserved one today. My only potential concern is the full sunroof … what if I don’t feel like being sunny that day?
I love this truck! Had a chance to test drive it and loved it
Yes, the vehicle is well thought out and stylish.
That is the most important for sure!
Ventilated seats would be nice. Bluetooth speaker and air compressor would also be a plus. Wish it also had a split rear door like the R1S.
Zero chance they will end up starting at $45k. The price will get raised before they roll of the line.
Looking forward to hearing how reliable those are on the trail. Nice looking rig. 💙✌️😊
Size wise? How comfortable will it be for five adults? Thanks for sharing this video
A light weight and less expensive 2 door T version that will fit into my garage and budget would be really nice. A solar bed cover would be the cherry on top!
Happy Easter Joe . When will you go on throttle with the Vinfast vf8 ?
10:26 I was sold when I saw a space where I can finally store my sack of apples.
@@WinnersMind67 Alas, if he only had as many brain cells as he does dollars
Love the style, elegant and slick
the only thing im thinking of is the cost of replacing the battery once its out of warranty.
The Rivian R1T Quad-large pack warranty is eight years or 175,000 miles. That is probably better than most engine warranties from anyone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Buy a battery down the road for this thing... HA.. not likely.
I have been waiting. I am glad that I did. This may be my next EV
I think they did great but the R2 should have been on the market yesterday since Rivian needs more affordable models, but I will be pleasantly surprised if when the R2 launches it does actually end up starting around 45k. Also I am surprised Joe went the full review without mentioning R2-D2 once 😁
He doesn't strike me as a big Star Wars fan. I will say that I'm sure there will be a handful of R2's that get an R2-D2 wrap!
We have reserved and we are proudly in line! ❤🚙 beep beep!
Joe, you are the best. I wish you have the same energy when you are 100 years old.
Rivian does an amazing job at the build quality and design !!! I'm still not a bev guy, but Rivian would be my choice R1S, though.
This could be a winner. Wish you could get smaller wheels with more tire sidewall though.
I WANT 1! Imma put R2D2 on my tag🤭
I want mine o say MUSKWHO
That would be so cool!
@@brh46268now I like that!
I was thinking the same thing!!
