I am a female and travelled in Bangladesh solo multiple times (In 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017). First time was my first ever trip to Asia. Traveled to Dhaka, Cox Bazar, Khulna and Mongla. Always found people who spoke English. English is the primary language along with Bengali for those that go to school. I moved about alone by myself in all of the above locations. And was able to get transport when I needed to where ever. I even hired a boat alone in the Sundarbans.
Also, it's not that they overcharge you just because you are a tourist, it's because haggling is normal part of the process there. I would walk to a taxi and if they gave me a high price I would simply say no, and give them the price I wanted. If they said no I would walk away. This is part of how it is done. They usually would then yell ok ok, and I would get the fair price. 100% agree that is is a gorgeous country and filled with the most kind people.

      @Edgesofearth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      - I blocked him because he was morally wrong on many accounts.. and he was clearly trying to attack me using his unbelievably terrible logic. similar to the way that you are doing right now.
do you honestly believe that if I had no respect for other countries and cultures in languages that I would actually visit them? like...hellllooo! 😂 the sole purpose of my travels is to experience these cultural differences. but when a man tries to attack me and tell me that i am supposed to not pay a higher price than what is listed as MRP and that I am a moran for paying more... it tells me that he clearly does not understand the content of the video, which is to tell people that the local people were cheating me and trying to collect double or triple MRP on countless occasions. this is just one example of his six or seven different pointless examples that do not make any sense.

I think you should have done a little research before travelling to Bangladesh. And, you had given so many wrong information. When I travelled to Bangladesh, it took around 12 minutes for an on arrival visa of £51 and had to fill up a form for a sim card just outside the airport. Easy peasy...
Yes, there are some issues such as the street food, the traffic and the lack of understanding in English. The rest of everything was smooth, easy and full of fun.

Shamim Ahmed doesn’t matter where he’s from it’s a pretty shitty country with a shitty govt and stuck up people. And Bangladesh has the greediest prideful arrogant people in the world. They’re just slightly nicer with foreigners cuz normally no one wants to go to that country. Dhaka was also voted the second dirtiest city in the world. That’s your capital. And the new generation are so lost they are blinded to following the western culture when it’s so antithetical to their own Bengali and Islamic culture. Bangladesh is “progressing” in the most backward way. And I never understood why people within the country distance each other through denizenship of district. Y’all have one national anthem

Hey Brock, hope this information helps you and other foreigner tourists regarding visa.... "On Arrival Visa" at Dhaka Airport is USD 51 for USA, Canada, Australia, UK and EU nationals.
If you apply to an Embassy its higher (USD 160 same for a Bangladeshi passport holder to apply USA visa USD 160 per person) but if you get a flight and arrive at Dhaka Airport, there is a desk for "On Arrival Visa" (I have personally asked about Australian passport holders and US passport holders as I needed concrete information about my cousins who lived in USA, Australia n UK) where you can fill up forms about your hotel/residence info and you pay only USD 51 for Bangladesh Visa.
Hope this helps.... Love from Bangladesh

I really loved your content. Being a Bangladeshi, I can relate most of the cons that are likely reasons that discourage visiting Bangladesh. We definitely have to work on these matters.
Truth be told, although there are many problems in Bangladesh. I am extremely optimistic future tourism industry in Bangladesh.
As we had no prior history of tourism, it will take some time get use to. Economy is the biggest factor to boost tourism industry. Due to our rapid economic growth, massive infrastructure development is under construction. Within a few years, I expect at least 30-50 percentage problems will be resolved.
We are the same version of early days Singapore. A country that no one wanted to visit and predicted will collapsed if they are separated from Malaysia.
All the best and happy travelling 💝

Nice to hear an honest american common people's idea about our country. I also started travelling internationally from 2019 and had different experiences at airports, hotels and on the street. @@Edgesofearth Hmm...now I understand...see when I travelled to china I had the same experience you had here and in a lot of other places, the language barrier, but I was confident and I believed people are the same everywhere. I turned out to be right in a lot of ways. There are dumb people who think they are smart, there are rude people, there are humble people too and most of all you meet friendly people. According to the state of their situation the percentage of these qualities varies. In Malaysia and Singapore I had very different experience with same ethnic group of people. Both countries has mixed ethnic people namely Chinese, south Indian and Malay. In Malaysia there is a good balance and satisfaction among the ethnic groups, but in Singapore the south Indians seems to be more sour in their attitude I have made up some theories in my mind but that is to discuss over phone or face to face. Hate comments and vulgar comments comes more from people who are suppressed or are in fear - Bangladeshi and Indian people are historically suppressed by various powers and once they are very proud, rich and free people...but in recent decades the situation changed in both countries and people likes to talk...like to express their feelings, they are jealous and at the same time afraid so you may face a lot of hate comments...you may face it too from the Chinese people but they are more afraid to express their feelings in words...they are suppressed for too long and possibly they are smarter...:-) and there is another fact, they are very very poor in English, if you know Chinese and go to their blogs I believe you will understand what I say. Take care.

I don't know if the sim part is true. I visited last year from the UK and got a sim from the airport itself. The airports I visited had wifi. To get the sim they did need my passport which was weird. And they didn't have full monthly top ups like in the UK. You had to buy a certain amount of data or credit for a certain amount of days. I think I paid 250 taka for 10gb internet for 7 days. So about £2.50.
But if anyone does visit I advice not to use any credit/ debit cards anywhere. Always carry cash and check the banks for conversion rates as they differ slightly each day.

I'm sorry that you've gone through this kind of experience. Actually you got almost everything right. The matter of pricing is applicable for all. If you're not experienced in bargaining you'll be charged more even if you're a local. Sellers will understand easily that you lack informations. They will try to charge more, they will try to sell their bad products to you. My suggestion is always try to go fixed prize shop. Never go for a bus trip for long distance travel. Roads are extremely dangerous in this country. Even highways are very narrow and most bus drivers are not skilled enough. Try to use Uber and other local ride sharing app for short distance. Those are pretty cheap & better service.

I can totally get your point and it is mostly correct. But I guess a few of the Con comes from the countries inexperience of handling "Tourist". Mostly BD has seen foreigners coming in for business or govt development work and their "chargeback to company- so dont care with price" mindset has given the expectation of high price to businesses. Having said that even the locals get fooled at times by them. Best way to avoid is by asking price beforehand.
Also Allergies!!!! If you are a tourist and you have certain food allergy, you may find it difficult to communicate as in general locals dont have as many or as complicated food allergy in caomparision to the western world. So they dont have any idea that a nut can kill a person!
But at the end of the day it will be the people who will come to your aid and make the journey beautiful. Also keep note the emergency number 999. A lot of good feedback about the emergency call centre as they have strict follow up policy.

      - you are making the conversation about where to buy the SIM card to get the SIM card. the point I am making is that it is not an easy thing to get apparently if you are outside of the airport...like me.
I did not fly into Bangladesh, I crossed the land border.
yes, most people enter the country via the airport. and yes, it might be easier to get a SIM card at the airport.
but you cannot discredit my statement about it being significantly more difficult than other countries.
I have been in countries where you walk up to any booth anywhere in the country and they simply give you one for free and even free data for a week. absolutely zero questions asked. not even my name. if you want data after a week, then you simply pay money.

Enjoyed your video. I can relate to the logistic difficulties you faced. Young people particularly students can communicate in English to some extent but they will have difficult picking up your accent. Most people can read English alphabet and numbers, so short written communication is one way around. It will be difficult for a tourist to find his way around without a local guide in this country, and without a doubt you will be ripped of at every occasion unless you have a local to watch your back. Finding your own way around in chaotic environment can be adventurous, but like you said at the end of the video, it can become rather stressful, even for us locals.
