01:38 "you won't have the natural compresion" this is inaccurate- compression is a result of the subject being far away from the camera, not something happening in the actual lens. Cropping in results in the same compression you would get with an equivalent telephoto lens
In photography, when we refer to compression we are speaking of a phenomenon involving lenses and the distance from the subject to the background and the subject to the camera. Compression is the “compressing” of a scene - a phenomenon in which the background appears to be closer to a subject and larger in comparison than it actually is. This compressed effect is achieved with telephoto lenses. The longer the lens, the further back the photographer must step back from the subject to keep them the same size in the frame and the larger and closer the background will appear. Some really interesting images can be created this way, for example in which the moon looms larger-than-life over a subject.

@Millenial Memes yeah I get that .. but it would just be a software feature to implement that possibility to better check the action / focus of the part you are actually interested in atm, with the rest of the scene as your composition and still being able to crop adjust in post.
I'm trying very hard not to have "GAS", but the Q3 has really caught my eye. I got back into photography via Fuji with the X-e2 and then Pro-2. In the end two things forced a switch; a bag full of primes (bye bye weight savings) and the fiddly nature of the Pro-2. So I moved it on and got a Canon R6. It's been a great camera, but with the 24-105 f/4 it's a bit of a chunky monkey, so not really an everyday carry. Plus, that 20 mp sensor is not exactly future-proof. The Q3 is checking a LOT of boxes for me.

Many people refer to different focal length lenses (such as your "wide angle" 20mm, or "telephoto" 200mm) as having different field of views, which means a wider angle of the environment is recorded in the photo. However, field of view is NOT the only thing focal length affects. Focal length also changes the "compression" of objects relative to one another in the image, so a tighter focal length like 200mm will make two people standing in a row appear "flatter" against the image. It can also affect things like facial features, which is why focal lengths in the 100ishmm range are typically used for portraits, because those are considered close to a "natural" compression of the facial features according to how the human eye sees faces, unlike a wide angle lens which will distort the face a little. I would suggest looking for comparison photos online because it is difficult to describe in text.
@@ianroe1076 All lenses produce exactly the same perspective. Longer focal length lenses do not compress space nor do shorter focal length lenses expand space. Ted is giving voice to a widespread and very persistent misconception.
@@artcamosy8621 Unfortunately, that is not true. If it were, then all photographers would be able to use any focal length of lens as long as the sensor was high enough resolution (barring any desire for a certain depth of field effect). If you don't believe me, I encourage you to take comparison shots of two Lego men at different distances from the camera with drastically different focal lengths, and compare how the images look when cropped to be approximately the same.
I found an article by Matt Brandon called Is Lens Compression Fact or Fiction? Which explains this very well. I tried to post the link but TH-cam deletes my comment for some reason.
It looks like not. "Open Gate" video is what you're looking for. Right now Fujifilm X-H2S and the new XS-20 have Open Gate along with the Panasonic GH6 have it.
It feels so out of my league, but then I realize I'm looking at a $3800 Sony and at least 1 $1000 or so lens...I'm almost all the way there in price but probably with a bigger heavier setup that isn't as nice in many ways. Bummer you can't get the bokeh of a 90mm as well, but this is such a nice simple setup with no switching and tons of versatility...seems worth.
The Leica Q3 is way out of my financial league. With that said, it's a dream camera of mine - as the Q2 before it - because of the combination of simplicity and versatility. There is a beauty and utility to not having to decide what lens I'm going to choose. Just pick it up and go... all the while becoming as proficient as possible with the tool that is my camera.
Ted, actually Leica improved the back button focus (focus lock) on the Q2 series in their last firmware update. When you use the back button to focus and lock, it stays locked even after shooting or engaging the shutter button. It is still not on par with back button as implemented by other manufacturers, though. For example, touching any other function button or dial disengages the locked state. I really wish Leica would give us back button focus with the same attributes Canon and others do!
Good to hear that Leica are finally recognising the benefit of BBF, thank you for pointing this out. Every other brand of camera I own is set for BBF. Does it work with C-AF, as in continuously focussing while pressed?
1:38 long lenses don't have 'natural compression' the perspective is determined by the position of the camera. If you use a 90mm lens on a FF camera it will have the same perspective (same compression) as a 90mm crop mode on the Q3. There will be a difference in other aspects since only a small fraction of the sensor is being used (about 1/8 the area) but the perspective is not changed. Depth of field effects would be different, the Q3 cropped to 90mm at f/1.7 won't have the same depth of focus as an f/1.7 90mm FF lens on a FF camera, but you could stop down the FF camera to get the same depth of focus if you wanted.
Their stubbornness towards back button focus is odd to me because it seems the type of photographers these cameras are aimed at are the exact type who would use BBF.
Agree with supposition that coupling the well-made Q’s 60mp BSI sensor with its incredible lens, makes for a great experience that’s reasonably priced. Love that it’s compact, versatile and powerful. I think it’s a big step up from the Q2.
Okay, I tried the Q3... but it's not for me. What I want when I photograph is to compose my picture at capture, not by cropping afterwards. So I need a compact with Zoom AND excellent lens quality (as good as the sum micron 28mm f1,7 ??). What would you recommend?
Is the rolling shutter bad even in simple 1080? Only thing I might use it for is a quick video with the kids, so definitely will be movement but I don’t need 8k or even 4k.
Hi, by any chance do you ever got the problem where you change the aperture but it doesn’t changes in the viewfinder ? And only once you take the picture you can see if the aperture is right 🙃🥲 is not changing in the viewfinder in real time
Leica makes interesting cameras, the idea of cropping to different focal lengths is very practical, and the imaging quality of Leica cameras is undisputed. The price alone... As an Olympus and Ricoh photographer, I don't see any real benefit to justify the price difference. Unfortunately. Anyway, dear Ted, thank you for your inspiring videos.
I still prefer the q2, the flip out screen doesn't do it for me, looks cheap! I think a lot of people will be wishing they kept their q2 after updating to the q3. Love to know if the q3 battery will fit the q2?
People that complain about the Price , first its a leica (duh) but you get a real high qualtiy lens with the camera that you dont get when you buy your d5 etc
But, you don't get features (that many less expensive cameras have) that are considered nearly essential...like in-body stabilization for that 60MP sensor?

Besides the cost of the camera, as a photographer, you will never get the separation on your subject with a fixed lens that you can get with interchangeable lenses! This is why I sold my X100V. Don’t get me wrong it’s a beautiful camera and I like the improvements in the auto focus, viewfinder. I guess it comes down to you how much money you’re willing to put down on a camera. I for one can buy a whole system with three main primes. Fuji XT5 18 1.4, 33 1.4, 90 F2. And still have money left over! 🖖
Hey I shoot with that whole Fuji kit you mentioned and much more including a Xpro1 and XH2S. But my Leica SL2 and Q-P are stunning in their own IQ. Great times for photography.
I’m getting one the second they email availability. Love the Q2 but the Q3 just seems better. Will wind up with Q3, M11, M11 mono with five lens and a D-lux so my kid grabs that not touch my gear.
Great review. I've had the Q2 for over a year and it's been a phenomenal camera in every aspect. I doubt my pockets will stretch to the Q3 for a while but this new upgrade to the Q system looks very impressive. By the way, the Q3 does have perspective control like the M11 and SL2 although this wasn't part of the recent Q2 firmware upgrade. And, as far as I know, the new Q3 battery will work with the Q2 and SL2.
@Phillip Banes Interesting. Sensor differences, maybe? I’d expect some growing pains in the first couple of firmware versions as they adapt the sensor to this platform…
It 's not a review. He said so himself. It's just a preview. But boy, it's a really hard sell of a video. Agree that the cropped pictures looked very soft. Maybe even out of focus. His description of how the auto focus was just so easy or simple to use is contradicted by the problem with it that he then described.
I’m thinking of upgrade my Q to Q3 as the Q now almost 10 years old but its still one of the best fix lens camera for still photography in term of iq and night shot .
genuine question: is there a camera out there that maximizes quality/technology for STILLS ONLY, completely cutting video capabilities for cost efficiency? What I mean by this is, if I buy a new flagship Nikon or Sony, how much of that price tag is reflective of mega video capabilities that I never use? I’m not sure if this is a dumb question.
I don’t think so. I think companies figure throwing in 4k in any camera they can charge a lot more. And also most people want the chance to be able to shoot decent video if they have to. I myself have also been looking for just a photo camera. That new canon R100 would have been good enough for me if it just had a flip screen. I’m buying a Sony for video
@@mattarnold7633 Thank you, I’m familiar with Hasselblad. Hasselblad is generally way out of my price range. If I could rephrase my initial question: If a 45mp full frame mirrorless Sony that shoots 4k@120fps of 8k@24fps is $2500-$4k, what would that price tag be without the video capabilities? To shoot that kind of video at a full frame without overheating is very expensive technology. I’d love to not may for that 😂
@@deantreloar the inclusion of video in cameras from a hardware point is no more expensive but opens more market opportunities, which is why it’s done. Doesn’t really cost any more
Thanks for the excellent walk through! When my Q3 eventually arrives, it will pair with my Sony RX100M7. I guess I have a weakness for discrete form factors that are pricey and ambitious.
Hi Ted, thanks for the as always very informative review. That is a great camera. I can’t understand why there is no joystick. Once you’re used to it, it’s totally disturbing to use a navigation pad/levers again. I’ll never forget the day I purchased the D500, my first camera with joystick. What a relief. Also Hasselblad‘s X2D. That tiny gadget joystick is so incredibly convenient. If the X2D had one, I’d purchased one immediately, but I’m still hesitating. Now the GFX100 II is released and that thing is very tempting - and has a tilt screen you also can use for overhead shots as well as vertical tilt. 7:08
Agree. They probably didn't want it to protrude at all, given their design aesthetic. That said, I am a Leica and Nikon shooter and I LOVE the joystick on my Z9 vs the nav pads on my earlier Nikon bodies.
Is it possible to switch from color to monochrome shooting ( like the M10 / M11) with the Q series? And if so - how significant is the difference between a ordinary Q2 vs Q2M ? I tested a M10 today and switching to Monochrome mode was really amazing. Any thoughts about this issue?
Yes it is, your jpeg will be mono (as is the viewfinder/screen display) but the raw still colour. I owned the Q2M and enjoyed the mono only commitment. Probably one stop better in low light than the Q2 and the noise is more film like. The downside for me was having to use a lens filter rather than the flexibility of choosing a colour filter effect in post conversion to mono. Often you don’t know ahead of the shot which filter will work best. Sold my Q2 and went Fuji for street but the titling screen of the Q3 has brought me back to the fold.
"Lens compression" is not a thing. The difference in the "compression" is the distance from the subject, not the focal lenght. If you crop a 28mm lens to a 70mm field of view, the framing will be exactly the same as a native 70mm lens.

I found an article by Matt Brandon called Is Lens Compression Fact or Fiction? Which explains this very well. I tried to post the link but TH-cam deletes my comment for some reason.
Thank you both for your inputs
Has the evf & display finally been correected or improved?
At 50mm is the cropped video also recoverable like the still images? Can you adjust crops like you can on photos?
It looks like not. "Open Gate" video is what you're looking for. Right now Fujifilm X-H2S and the new XS-20 have Open Gate along with the Panasonic GH6 have it.
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 Panasonic S5ii and S5iix has open gate 6K as well.

Is there any benefit to cropping in camera when you can just crop post? Isn't it just a digital crop and not an actual optical crop?
The Leica Q3 is way out of my financial league. With that said, it's a dream camera of mine - as the Q2 before it - because of the combination of simplicity and versatility. There is a beauty and utility to not having to decide what lens I'm going to choose. Just pick it up and go... all the while becoming as proficient as possible with the tool that is my camera.
you can just buy a body and a single lens, no need to think then?
But I agree, the Q3 looks nice.
@@hedleywrightphotography good question. I have not tried it with continuous mode, so I’m not sure whether this works.
Fuji made 2 CONVERTION LENSES FOR THE x100V SERIES A WIDE ANGLE ANS A TELE
CONVERTER. wHY DOESN'T SOMEONE LIKE VOIGTLANDER MAKE ONE FOR THE Q3?
Is BBF still a benefit? I thought BBF was useful for focus and recompose which is not needed with mirrorless + tracking
Great overview. Would love to see you test its macro abilities
Their stubbornness towards back button focus is odd to me because it seems the type of photographers these cameras are aimed at are the exact type who would use BBF.
What's that supposed to mean
@@KONAMAN100 enthusiast and professional photographers use back button focus all the time and those are the type of people who would buy the Q3.
@@NeonShores Q has bbf by the way
Can I use the upper part I don’t know what is it called to connect I microphone or simply use the bluetooth or the usb-c maybe?
Great review. Regarding the back button focus - the old Q can do it. Never understood why they removed it from Q2 and on... :(
Correct. That is how I shoot my Q-P.
Agree with supposition that coupling the well-made Q’s 60mp BSI sensor with its incredible lens, makes for a great experience that’s reasonably priced. Love that it’s compact, versatile and powerful. I think it’s a big step up from the Q2.
Fantastic review!!! However, I'll be keeping my Q2.
Any different aspect ratios by any chance? 645, 4:5 for example?
Hey, great video. Just wondering if the video recording stops after 29 minutes? I've heard people say it goes past that but the specs say it doesn't.
Would love to see a Q2 vs Q3 comparison.
Finally, a perfect camera!
Curious as to you think about the Pixii A2572. A modern digital camera using the Leica M-mount.
By looks only the buildquality and fitting esp on the lens looks just Beautiful. My dream camera right now
Okay, I tried the Q3... but it's not for me. What I want when I photograph is to compose my picture at capture, not by cropping afterwards. So I need a compact with Zoom AND excellent lens quality (as good as the sum micron 28mm f1,7 ??). What would you recommend?
😍😍😍 time to jump on an used Q2 haha
Just ordered one. Probably a 6-8week wait here in Aus.
Is there any where I can order one that’s not sold out or on back order until next year ?
0:27 wrong. The latest Q2 firmware brings eye detection to the old model too.
I said PHASE detection, not face detection. The Q2 is contrast only.
Is the rolling shutter bad even in simple 1080? Only thing I might use it for is a quick video with the kids, so definitely will be movement but I don’t need 8k or even 4k.
How strong are those side ports ,they are rubber
Hi, by any chance do you ever got the problem where you change the aperture but it doesn’t changes in the viewfinder ? And only once you take the picture you can see if the aperture is right 🙃🥲 is not changing in the viewfinder in real time
Thank you Ted for another great video. Got one little question. Does the bottom information bar still blocks the view on the LCD screen all the time?
The Oberwerth bags are nice but their locking mechanism just doesn't last. Mine doesn't lock in anymore after 1 year of use :'(
Leica makes interesting cameras, the idea of cropping to different focal lengths is very practical, and the imaging quality of Leica cameras is undisputed.
The price alone...
As an Olympus and Ricoh photographer, I don't see any real benefit to justify the price difference. Unfortunately.
Anyway, dear Ted, thank you for your inspiring videos.
@@weplaywax Maybe you did not get my point?
did I hear that right? 10k aud for a 28 1.7 full frame?
I still prefer the q2, the flip out screen doesn't do it for me, looks cheap!
I think a lot of people will be wishing they kept their q2 after updating to the q3. Love to know if the q3 battery will fit the q2?
The batteries are interchangeable.
Just sold all of my Canon M6Mk2 gear ... getting ready maybe to make the jump ... 😬 Thanks for the review.
The value is incredible relative to Leica. Shocked & impressed. I fully expected it to cost at least $1k more.
People not getting the true value of this camera. It’s price is fine with me.
People that complain about the Price , first its a leica (duh) but you get a real high qualtiy lens with the camera that you dont get when you buy your d5 etc
But, you don't get features (that many less expensive cameras have) that are considered nearly essential...like in-body stabilization for that 60MP sensor?
@@moongate31 thats true and for Those that have to have ibis its not a camera for them . For me its not a must.
Answering the question, just how much stuff can you sell in one video?
Hello,
Nice video, thank you. I'm waiting for my Leica Q3 😊
Where did you get this grainy leather Oberwerth Q bag ? On their website there is no grainy leather option😢
Thank you
I sold my Q2 Monochrom after I got a Q1.
I fell in love with the Q1 over the Q2M along with other M bodies.
Recently I got a Q-P for a long time use since I love the Q1 which I listed for sale.
Q-P is beautiful and absolutely the best looking Q among all the Q series including limited editions.
I don’t like the Ghost edition, Reporter edition, Dawn edition, etc.
Finally Q3 came out.
Unfortunately nothing special.
Same lens (Q1, Q2, Q3 all same lens)
I don’t need that huge 60MP.
24MP with my Q-P is pretty enough.
I don’t like a tilting screen.
I don’t need 8k video as I don’t shoot video.
I will buy a Sony camera for video if I’m in need of one for shooting video.
And the design is identical to Q2.
It’s just like upgrading a few functions so I would say it’s a Q2U(pgrade), not Q3.
Price is $5995.
Around $6500 after tax.
No reason to upgrade at all.
I will keep my lovely Q-P and then
1)
I will use $6500 for other electronics such as Samsung 85” TV, iMac, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook for about $3500.
And I will buy Sony/Canon camera and lens + accessories for video for about $3000.
Or,
2)
I will use $6500 to buy a SL2/SL2-S and SL 24-90mm lens while I keep my lovely Q-P.
Answer is quite clear about the Q3.
.
Thanks for the review. I was hoping for an actual 28mm f2 lens, it would make the camera smaller. The lens on these Qs are more like 25mm.
Cropping in will give you exactly the same "compression" as using a longer lens. It only depends on your distance to subjects & background.
I love the way you break down Photography for an enthusiast like us.. I would love to see you break down a camera as well the way you do with photographs. May be Fujifilm xs20 or XT4 / XT5
I bet with the latest advancements… a Sony RX1R Mk3 would SLAY.
Would sell out in record fashion. I have the MK2 version and never selling it. Crazy IQ out that bad boy.
I am fortunate enough to have all 3 lenses. They produce amazing quality and great value.
Hey I shoot with that whole Fuji kit you mentioned and much more including a Xpro1 and XH2S. But my Leica SL2 and Q-P are stunning in their own IQ. Great times for photography.
Thank you! Little info: true back button focus worked on my Q1 😅
Can you make the presets available for Affinity Photo?
Pre-ordered mine yesterday. Got two, so it's a Q6
Hahaha. Inflation bites, so I'll have a Q1 I think.

Hi Ted, can you please recommend if I should buy a m10-R or m11? Thank you in advance 🙏
I’m getting one the second they email availability. Love the Q2 but the Q3 just seems better. Will wind up with Q3, M11, M11 mono with five lens and a D-lux so my kid grabs that not touch my gear.
I thought you were going to comment on if it was worthy of switching from the Q2.
Hasselblad. All stills no video...
@@superstringsbro Hassebblad

Looking lean and mean Ted. Keep up the good work. Love your channel.
Thanks for the excellent walk through! When my Q3 eventually arrives, it will pair with my Sony RX100M7. I guess I have a weakness for discrete form factors that are pricey and ambitious.
PDAF appearing in the Q3 and in the S5 II is probably not mere coincidence.

I'm digging the linen shirt vibe in this edit.
Ted, loving this review of Leica Q3.
Waiting for stock at B&H
do your presets work with any camera files? i.e. If I shoot fuji but want kodak presets?
Yes indeed
"Lens compression" is not a thing. The difference in the "compression" is the distance from the subject, not the focal lenght. If you crop a 28mm lens to a 70mm field of view, the framing will be exactly the same as a native 70mm lens.
Like that Orient Kamasu on the wrist there
