A couple of viewers have pointed out a distinction I did NOT distinctly make (😊) about lens equivalence: the depth of field will NOT be identical for different crops at the same aperture at the same object size; the perspective will not be the same when both are held constant either. Both are a function of distance from the subject. The exposure, however, WILL be the same. Thanks to those of you who reached out. I LOVE THIS COMMUNITY!
I understand. I for one would prefer a Q with a 50mm f2 as the base, with crop factors up from 50mm. Subject separation from background is more important than a wide view when photographing people. I feel that there is room for a second Q, which would probably see many Q owners buying a second Q…
As I’m re orientating myself after my wife’s cancer, loosing my dog and my father (seriously a bad patch), I’ve had an epiphany, your videos are deeply wonderful, yes they’re about cameras and photography, but more than that they’re truly inspiring highlighting why life is so wonderful and precious, if you take a moment to see. Greetings from England. See you in the Lake District one day maybe.
It was just 5 years ago that I bought my first camera. It was a Leica Q. At the time Ken Hansen told me “nothing beats the Q.” That was all I needed then. Sounds like the 2 and now the 3 are continuing that legacy.
I love my Q2. Had it for just over 3 years now and it still continues to amaze me and, most importantly, inspire me to go out and shoot. I'm sure I'll update to the Q3 at some point but for now I'll sit it out and wait for he hype to calm down and then go for a Q3. Perhaps when a reporter edition comes out in a few years. The Q2 reported edition is really a killer look. so a Q3 reporter might just be it for me.
Perfect timing! I was about to jump on a used Leica Q. I'll wait just a little bit more for the price to go down a bit more. I'll look into Q3 in 10 years!
I must confess this camera slays me. As a working photographer for over fifty years, I have only purchased a hand-full of new cameras because I am very financially conservative. Yeah that's charm school lingo for cheap. This camera is going to keep me awake at night because being me, I know I will wait five or so years to consider buying one, which will make me 75 years old. So in reality I will most likely never own one unless I sell my M-P240 (never), some of my incredible lenses (maybe) or someone like a major news corporation uses one of my photos without obtaining license to do so (yep, that has happened) and I offer them a deal to keep the issue confidential for a very large check.
The only thing I'm not really seeing is the Leica look we all used to read about or even see ourself, that look? Now this has the Sony A7RIV sensor, and yes it has the excellent 28mm lens, which is all Leica. I just don't see the "look" here, it's absolutely an amazing sensor and it's top image quality for sure, I get that part. I just think CMOSIS makes the sensors, which give or gave us that look. Certain sensors are just unbelievable, like the Nikon D700, Canon 5D, Nikon D4/Df and D4s all have amazing sensors, with a unique look. There are many Leica camera's I could name that have sensors and processors which seem to really give the Leica look, but at least this new Leica camera has the excellent 28mm and it's holding up, even on this 60+ MP sensor/camera. I absolutely love the Leica Q2 Reporter and hopefully the will now come down some in price or more will show up on the used market, but I doubt the prices will drop anytime soon, as far as retailer's are concerned.
Getty images are using one of my pictures taken in the 1970s and charging big bucks for a copy without my permission. I've been using the Q2 since it came out i don't think i will upgrade to the Q3 I'll wait for the Q4 😂
I’m going to a funeral tomorrow. A friend dropped dead suddenly and quite unexpectedly at only 68 years of age. Very much planning for his future and not retired, but looking forward to a family holiday in September. A holiday that neither he or his wife will now take. If you want this camera and can afford it, go for it and enjoy it while you can, because tomorrow may never arrive. Any money you have saved up will be of no use to you when you are no longer here or if your brain has turned to mush.
Free tip for Leica: develop a camera identical to the q-series with detachable lenses with the same quality of the 28f1.7 just 35, 50, 75 and 90. Call it the z-series. The last camera everyone buys.
Bravo! First time I'm seriously thinking about a Leica. Not psychologically there yet, and I have a ways to go in learning the craft before I reward myself with such a purchase, but your pitch / description of this piece of technology is one for the books: simply brilliant on so many levels - you, I mean, not the Leica. Might not be everyone's schtick, with a high word-/concept-rate and extremely spec-heavy delivery, but the aura and performance of the object you're describing eventually muscle through the language field and resonate in the mind's eye. You are a force of nature and these videos remind me of some of the best in-yer-face theater and Brecht's boxer, albeit sped up a bit. Great work all around. These clips are priceless, your knowledge a benefit to the global community. Now take a bow. ;-)
As a former M6 owner and watching the first Q, I waited until I saw the Q2 and purchased it in 2019. AND...well understanding there would be a Q3 at some point in the future. That time has come. As we often see with up-graded products, there are minimal improvements however, with the Q3 Leica has hit the ball out of the park. So, I like other Q owners, have a decision to make. While I continue to be extremely happy with my Q2, I'll have to noodle on this regarding to upgrade as well as where to sell my Q2. Thanks for an outstanding overview.
I hope this means the Q2 used market will cool off a bit to where I could afford one. The Q3 looks lovely, but I don't need the improvements it offers - not even the autofocus as I find that manual often helps me make a better composition. So I might finally be able to spring for the Q2.
@@Skipsul HA! I get it. I actually plan to keep my Q2 reporter. Love the look and style of that camera and of course image output is superb. It's my first Leica so it has some sentimental value to me. Best of luck getting a Q, it definitely a great camera regardless of which you get.
This Man brings Poetry, Soul, intellect and an avalanche of words I struggle to repeat let a long interpret to camera reviews. But his love of photography and images shines through. And when he loves a camera as he clearly does the Q3, you can tell without words, just look in his eyes !! I think I’ve found the camera I want, the camera I need !! Thks.
Superb video and overview. With its video, I am now questioning my SL2S purchase few months back. Q3 has it all and better except fixed lens which can be understood as zoom lens. Been able to crop images - and video, even no perfect .. you can get a lot from this. Very very tempting.
Thank you so much for comparing and commenting on all the “free” gear it comes with and eliminates at the same time. I shoot my M11 + 28 Lux 75% of the time and just recently out the 50mm back on it to try it out again. But honestly, I’m still loving the 28mm more. Now with Autofocus on the Q3, I’m tempted as sometimes my manual focusing skills do hold me back a bit and I miss that second of a moment. Decisions, decision. I’m actually afraid I’ll end up using a Q3 more if I go get this. Hmmm…
It is becoming increasingly clear that the cooperation between Leica and Panasonic is bearing great fruit for both sides. For both companies. (By the way, Wetzlar is only 30 km from my hometown).
A crop is a crop, a28mm is and stay a 28mm. It doesen`t matter what the marketing departement at Leica tell you. Besides that the tilty screen is definetley a welcome benefit.
I’m not the Leica marketing department; they didn’t talk me about this; and I encourage you to read the pinned comment as well as the other comments touching upon this point. 🖖🏻
I have been a very proud owner of the Q2 untill the day, when I realized that if the electronic of the body dies, also the excellent lens will end up in the bin. That was the moment I changed to the M11 and a Leica Summilux 35. Its not so much about the money, but throwing a fully functional Leica lens away, because standard electronical parts give up, its a no go. But apart from that, the Q are great tools to take pictures.
When was the last time a well made digital camera gave up on you? I’ve had 25 of them probably and never had a failure plus. An M11 and 35 summilux is 2.5 times the price. It’s a real Leica though. The Q is kinda half Leica
I don’t think you mentioned it - sorry if you did - the sensor in the Q3 is now BSI which should along with the option to reduce the pixel count with pixel binning make the Q3 a low light monster
Good points re Q3. I had an original Q and a Q2 color. Sold both. I found the Q "system" a bit limiting due to the one lens limitation. I have a Q2 Mono which I find not limiting at all. Strange how the mind works! I'll likely update to a Q3 Mono when that's available. After recent surgery that will limit my bending ability, the flip screen will prove vital to continued camera use. Time to revisit the Q System. You mentioned the digital crop ability frequently in this video. In the past the digital crop was not applied to RAW files; only JPGs. Has this changed?
Thank you so much, Hugh. If I ever own a Leica, it will be a Q3. I do wish I could shoot with the Exa my dad bought just after he was discharged from the Army 80 years ago.
I've been pro for 35yrs + I have cameras for my studio - high end Hass etc - but the Q's - oh dear they are a must have for my personal camera - I have had them all and this one will also be on the cannot wait to get it list
Thank you for the quick review Hugh. The Q3 looks like a terrific camera. I loved using my Q2 Monochrom and only (regrettably) traded it in recently to get 10x42 Noctivid binoculars and a used Elmarit-M 28 mm lens. I really miss that camera. In the hand, the Q2 Monochrom felt like an old school film camera thanks to its simple design, and dedicated aperture ring and shutter speed dials (where they belong). Even though I still have the CL, SL2, and M11, and have an M11 Monochrom on order, I can see getting a Q3 later this year.
I had the original Q and never got on with it. I currently shoot an M10R with 50 and 35 Lux lenses. The Q3 is tempting but I think it still has way too much futz as you put it. What I would really like is that EVF in place of the rangefinder on an M...
Interesting to see Leica add ‘film simulations’ to their camera for jpeg images. I can’t wait for that strategy to become mainstream and have significant user customization.
Thanks so much for this video, I always appreciate your view and words on things. Honest, articulated and objective. I especially like the words at the end about the heart and soul of a photographer, these are the things that separate the cameras and tech from what the photographer sees and executes, and this heart and soul aspect will be (is already) challenged by the new up-and-comer photographer of the world- AI. Thanks always
When comparing crops on Q3 with 35 and 50 mm lenses, it would be fair to say, that it no longer keeps f1.7 looks in depth of field. It’s equivalent of putting f1.7 FF lens on APS-C.
I love the Q2 and use the crop modes, but your comparison of crop images to the 35 and 50 lux was a bit off. I wish the Q could match the images from those lenses, but the equivalent depth of field cropping the Q to a 35mm would be obtained using the 35 at F2.0, and at 50 mm it would be a full F4.0. You can't crop a 28m 1.7 to 50mm and get a shallow DOF. So I usually think it is still worth carrying around a great 50 on my M for people and close street images.
@@3BMEP Thanks for replying! (I am a fan of your videos). I think I didn't make my point well, but it is important. People make this mistake all the time. At the SAME distance, say 2 M, a 28mm 1.7 lens has a DOF of around 52 cm, while a 50 mm lens at 1.7 would have a DOF of only 16 cm. Much less DOF at same distance and at same aperture due to the focal length. You just can't get a LUX 50 level shallow DOF with the 28 1.7 at portrait distance due to the laws of physics. Thanks - and keep up the good work!
@@AKAgni-i7s I think I didn’t make my point well! At the same object size, the DOF of the 28 and 50 at 1.7 and 1.4 are very close. In order to have the same object size, the the Q3 with 28 would have to close the distance of, say 4’ for the 50 to about 2’ 3”. At that point, the difference in DOF would be less than 1/2” In other words: I think we are saying the same thing. 😊👍🏻
@@3BMEP OK - but no... hold that thought (with all due respect)... You often talk about having a lot of megapixels and "cropping the .." out of the image, and the Q3 does has the crop frame lines - you imply in the video it is like having extra lenses. I am saying that if you use the Q3 crop frame lines, and pretend you are using say a 50mm, you will in fact get an image like you are using a 50 F 4.0+ lens. You would not use the crop frame lines AND walk in to half the distance to your subject in practice. So we are kind of saying the same thing, but I think your video description would be misleading to many which is why I commented in the first place. Thanks!
I appreciate this thread. You are right that I would NOT choose to close the distance, because the perspective would not be as flattering as with a 50. Thank you for your persistence!
I have had a Q for a few years, it is amazing but I felt no need to get a Q2, so was not expecting to want a Q3, but I was wrong. I will be looking to get one as soon as I am able, this thing is amazing and life is too short, not to be capturing memories with it. Fantastic Review.
Hugh is such an articulate “enthusiast “ For fine camera gear , he has convinced me to order the Q3 43 , and today I bought a Q3 new .. am afraid to watch his next video
Fabulous review as always! And beyond your informative perspectives and comparisons, I’m loving the images you are posting from the Q3 (especially from Seattle!). They have a look that I really like a lot. I can only dream of owning one (unless I sell off a Z7ii, XE4 and various and sundry other things … hmmm), but I still appreciate your insights and I always enjoy watching your videos. Keep them coming!
Thanks for the Fuji mention! ❤ I agree it’s about the photographers heart. I love care and lust after it just like everyone else, but cannot possibly justify a purchase like this one. I have some really beautiful Fuji bodies and glass that work for me just fine. That being said, if I find a good deal on a Q2 I may just go for it. I have yet to experience the digital farm of Leica on the streets and as a street photographer, my life wouldn’t be really complete without that experience I suppose …well, according to some anyway!
Im in the same boat, sitting on ±3000$ of fuji gear, thinking that in one year when rich people start selling their barely used Q3's, I might sell and switch
it’s a great camera I had a Q2 and I was very happy with it but the question is is it better than a Hasselblad X2D? I doubt it, the focusing will be better on the Q3 but in overall resolution and dynamic range, color I think the next X2D is going to win handsomely.
Agreed with all of the above Hugh. I really hope it's possible to implement Video Stabilisation in firmware - the 8K cine L-Log files are exquisite but I had to resort to mounting the Q3 on a Ronin RS3 Pro (overkill). Hope Leica and Ronin work on some compatibility here. Apart from Leica Looks - some new Leica LUTs would be great. The Classic 709 works beautifully with the Log files in Final Cut. Internal memory would have been great - that was the only thing they should have brought over from the TL2 and M11. Great to have the ability to do some short full featured videos in such a small camera.
Excellent, balanced thoughts. Much appreciated. For the price of the new Q3 I'm sure an SL2 or Leica T PLUS a used Q or Q-P could be found. But life can be short and maybe a Q3 is worth every penny?
Sir, you speak convincingly! Thank you for the Q3 talk. It would immensely help first time Q3 buyers if you could kindly do a beginners set up etc video
HI! I preordered my Q3 on June this year and received it in August. Went to Brussels on vacation 15 days on September and took around 400 raw pictures of Art Nouveau buildings. When I came back started to work on them and in September I bought an Q2M all from the local Leica shop in Barcelona. Period....
The Q2M will still have A LOT more resolution for prints than a 60mp sensor with bayer filter. You have to go north of 150mp to reach the resolution of the Q2M sensor. The only Leica that has the Q2M beat for details in print are the M11M and, in the future, Q3M
I’m in this dilemma myself. Whether to wait for the Q3M or go for the still incredible Q2M. I don’t like editing bw through colour channels, perhaps I’m just not good at it, but I think it looks unnatural very quickly. I prefer to darken or lighten areas with masks/selections. The main upgrade for me would be the usb charging. No joke, that stuff is so good when travelling. The flip screen is a nice though, although I find waist level shooting on these little screens just aren’t anything the same as looking down in my 500CM
@@tor2919I have been told this by several people but have yet to find any real data to back up the claim. Any chance you can point me to a video or article that has some type of testing to demonstrate just how much better the monochrome sensor is for black and white? A used Q2M is quite a bit cheaper than the brand new Q3 and my current project is all black and white. While I would love the new features I can live without them, particularly if I can get as good or better quality black and white images. Thanks
I pre-ordered on the first day. It remains to be seen just how long I will twist in the back order winds… In the mean time, I will continue watching Hugh’s video on repeat :)
When that Q3M drops so is my wallet. Thanks Hugh for another inspiring review. Your approach and style is quite unique and makes for compulsive viewing. Enjoy Claudia's new Q3
The Q lens FOV is already ~25mm unless they've increased the distortion correction crop on the Q3. I'm not sure if this is due to users looking at the horizontal FOV and reporting 25mm vs Leica using the diagonal FOV and coming up with 28mm or what.
Another Leica home run ! I have the Q2M which I won't part with. This Q3 will be in my hands as well. I'm trying to wait a bit for no other reason than self restraint is a tool of appreciation. Hugh I predict you will sell your SL2 for the SL3. The SL3 will have the same sensor as the Q3 which will have at least two more stops of usable ISO and significantly improved AF. !!!!!!!!
Amazing what megapixel count can do for any lens innit? ..love your enthusiasm Hugh. Oh and I did notice every example photo( nice) you posted were B&W conversions ...
The Q3 is my first ever Leica, for decades I have been photographing with Nikon gear - but now I guess the Nikon stuff will begin collecting dust 😊 I had the chance to visit the Leica factory in Wetzlar/Germany, and watching the people collect all the bits and pieces together manually until it finally is a superb camera or lens was absolutely fascinating. Now I do better understand what a friend said years ago - a Rolex is not just a watch, and a Leica is not just a camera.😊 Thanks for sharing your opinion 👍😊
Hey! Congratulations on reaching 100k subscribers. BTW - I bought the Q3. It's my 65th birthday present to me. Me. Mine. Love it! I shoot on manual most of the time, but guess what? I shoot on auto sometimes, too. This camera does not judge me. It just takes great pictures.
The manual says it has an operating temperature of 0’C-40’C (32F to 104F). Please let us know what you think about the camera on a hot or cold day when you get the chance please!
It is the same as Q2. I was in Japan 2 weeks ago with Q2 in Kanazawa and it was raining and hailing at about 1-2C. My Q2 shut down 2x - initially I thought I ran out of battery when my screen went off, but I was able to snap the shutter. Then it was back on but shut again shortly after. I just turned it off and stopped using it for say 30mins, then it worked ok. Another thing I found during my travel this time was how cold the metal body is and that Q2 buttons were not so easy to press wearing glove. And I’m only wearing rather thin mont-bell touch screen glove. It’s not a big deal as we live in tropics so this experience was the first time for me.
Okay, I tried the Q3... but it's not for me. What I want when I photograph is to compose my picture at capture, not by cropping afterwards. So I need a compact with Zoom AND excellent lens quality (as good as the sum micron 28mm f1,7 ??). What would you recommend?
The 28mm lens can crop down to shoot 35, 50, 75 & 90. But aren't you always shooting at 28mm? You're not going to get the separation or optics of a 75mm lens, right?
@@albertbarton4663 No. They are one and the same and thing: the II get the full 60mp frame, but it will open in LR cropped. Change the crop, and you’ll find you indeed have the entire frame at your disposal. Claudia LOVED this; I like it too. 😊🖖🏻
I may be able to buy a Q3 soon and I really hope I can. I love my canon r5 but i want a leica q3 for reasons i don’t quite know. Maybe its because my dad and i used to look at these high end cameras and since losing him I want to honour him. Will it make me a better photographer? Probably not. But it may encourage me to go out and take more photos and get out of my comfort zone.
I read mostly good comments and some bad about Leica Q3 specially about price. My issue is that this camera is not available anywhere for the price of $5995 . I think the q4 will be released before the q3 is in stock again. 😢
The Q series is an interesting “value” proposition. For the price you have so many more options that practically it never really makes sense. I am still glad I went GFX 100s over the Q2 and would still make the same Decision today over the Q3. It is bigger but the files are simply amazing. Innovation is always good for the consumer so glad to see the next evolution in the Q series.
I compared the Q3 with my GFX 100s - the RAW Colors SOOC on the Fuji are too muted in comparison with Q series. The same goes with their video Log codec - grading is too hard with the GFX whereas Log files from the Q3 are just a snap in FCP
On the contrary, this is the first time I have bought a high end camera which ticks all the boxes. The C8K video capabilities of the Q3 is completely underestimated. I would like to think that the high price translates to a commitment by Leica to work hard on the firmware to support: 1. Improved audio via USB 2. External recording via USB to SSDs and hopefully to CinemaDNG in preference to ending to using HDMI output. 3. Connections to Gimbals 4. Increased features in FOTOS via cable - very much like the Monitor+ app for with the Sony A1.
A typical fantastic review from Hugh that blends Leica technical info with humanistic touches, sample shots, and humor. I frantically start searching for coins under the couch after watching this video. Trouble.
Great appraisal Hugh. Having just got in from work here in the UK I am presented with an avalanche of Q3 prompts from TH-cam, and being a man who demands the absolute best I naturally chose you to open the batting for me! 😉 The Q3 is a compelling option. The stellar lens combined with increased sensor resolution offers a genuine range of pseudo focal lengths without too high a resolution loss - something I always felt restrained by on the Q/Q2. I think it offers a serious alternative to my X-pro2 (plus lenses), and although I won’t be ditching my Q or Q2M just yet, I will be upgrading my iPhone 11 Pro this year to the 15 Pro, and firmly believe that the combination of pocketable phone and superb full frame camera will just about cover everything I need. Here’s hoping!
Very cool video!!! When you say it crops to 35 and 50mm, you mean crop only and not compression, right? If that’s correct, isnt it better and simpler just to crop in post whenever necessary?
if you're intrigued by the Q3 but can't afford it, i strongly recommend picking up one of the Q or Q2's that will surely hit the used market soon. I own both and love them.
Sold. Getting the Q3. When does your grip launch for purchase? I'm not a pro, but your business case / value proposition for the Q3 is totally compelling. Great video and thanks for your encyclopedic knowledge.
After watching your powerful , entertaining , and persuasive videos .. I did buy , as found someone other than some ruthless Philistines who want my first born ( I have no children:) in excessive markups …. It finally starting cooling off enough over here in Phoenix .. wow! I certainly am delighted as I am certain I never photographed with any lens this great !, it does inspire us !, and not in a fanboy kind of way … The detail, dynamic range and colors make me glad I finally started saving money a few months back as I am thinking my young wife can make the leap from iPhones up to the 343 ,, or maybe I just want one and can justify it this way …. Hold that …….
You are really compelling me to go get a Q3. By the way the shots were excellent. Especially the last shot looking downtown only in NY. Thanks again Hugh.
Most of my works are under low light condition. How is image quality and noise comparing between Q2 and Q3 in low light with high ISO? I would appreciate to your advice.
I don’t have the Q2 in-house so can’t compare directly, but in my experience at the same object size, higher megapixel sensors are a better overall choice for me.
Hugh could you please tell me which music you used in your video, when you present the first series of photos ..? I like it very much but don‘t know the artist and the song… Thanks for your videos which are always a highlight of the wekk..
I sometimes feel a pang of regret for selling my X100V. But perhaps it was the universe telling me that I needed a Leica in my life. And that maybe, that Leica is the Q3. Damn you, Hugh.
Ive had my Q3 for many months - being one of the first to prise one out of my dealers hands Magic Stupendous and ust all good leica quality - leica have hit a home run and more with this camera - I have a M8 but thats reserved for black and white becuase now I have this powerhouse
I'm not sure i understand the praise for the cropping modes as from what I can tell the raw file still has the full focal length. Is there any difference between the crop mode and cropping in post? I will say this makes the recent Q review more interesting for those of us still dreaming about owning a Leica one day.
Looks like a great camera. So many features my Q2 doesn't have but wish it did, such as the tilt screen. Having said that, I am very happy with the Q2. The entire Q series is fantastic. Wishing they made a Q body with interchangeable Q mount lenses. I know that's a pipe dream, though, as I'm sure the Q would start to cannibalize the M series cameras/lenses. But as it stands, the Q cameras are just wonderful and I'm happy to have one.
Look at their MTF charts at f/5.6 especially, which is where I typically shoot for urban landscape and much classic street. It is also better suited for flash with its leaf shutter.
UPDATE FROM LEICA REFUTING ALLEGATIONS OF SELLING LEICA EQUIPMENT TO RUSSIA: leica-camera.com/en-int/press/counterstatement-ukraine-insider-russia-shipments PERSONAL NOTE: those of us familiar with the Leica Freedom Train (as I am) already found allegations of Leica enabling the Russian invasion of Ukraine completely out of character for the company. Nonetheless,I contacted Leica management and immediately received the response you’ll find in the above link. I believe the company, period.
The weather proofing, tilt screen and improved EVF makes this very tempting. When I traveled the past year, I just stuck with a Leica M-A and 35mm f2 'cron. I loved all the results. I captured the recent Mauna Loa eruption as well as life in a post-Soviet city. However, recently on my trip back to the US, I had a bunch of film rolls ruined because 3 times (in Yerevan, in Doha and in LA), the agents refused a hand check. This was heartbreaking and I might just quit film and change my channel name to something else, and just get a Q3.
Just a reminder that when you crop into an image you are magnifying the noise, so the 28mm f/1.7 can be treated like a 35mm f/2.2 (so, a summicron not summilux), and a 50mm f/3 (so an elmarit not summilux) with that corresponding reduction in megapixels as well. Expressed in zoom terms, that would be a variable aperture 28-50mm f/1.7-3.0. There is no such thing as a free lunch, especially a free three-course meal of summiluxes!
I might just add though, that cropping does give added flexibility of framing in post, so you could consider the cropped focal length equivalents to be shift lenses.
@@Bayonet1809 yes and yes but: from an exposure perspective, the 1.7 remains 1.7 irrespective of crop. That was my point (along with the other“free” lower resolution cameras as examples) but I was NOT clear about depth of field.
As a long time Leica fan boy, I pre-ordered the Q3 literally within 3 minutes after it’s release. It is everything I want for street and travel and my ILC gear will be relegated to everything else. Hell, the Q3 could even make a heckuva astrophotography camera now that you can turn long exposure noise reduction off. Now for the wait - 🤞that it’s not months.
I watched your vids for years. Enjoyed them. But after a while, I thought 'This is mostly about style. His delivery is quirky but really good. His vocabulary is superb. But the information is not practical to me.' I'm a demographic that Leica targets. 68, no kids. Separated. Still working. Very nice income. Lots of savings. Photography is my passion. I resisted the Q and was happy with X100 and X100S. Resisted the Q2... "I like my x100V". Enjoyed a different TH-cam dude who said "Leica is jewelry for men." And smugly avoided Leica. But the arguments presented here are persuasive enough for me to consider buying that piece of expensive jewelry.
Journey to Leica Q3 I was a fairly early adopter of the Fuji X100 series (2013) as my EDC. Also, longtime Nikon shooter (D100, D300, D700, Z6II, Z9, Z8) as the workhorse/duty camera yet my everyday camera was the X100S then X100F then X100V until moving to Nikon mirrorless 2021. Tried several options with Nikon Z6II to make it the EDC, short primes, pancake lens, small telescopes but no option worked as well as the X100V. Bear in mind, the X100V had some annoying limitations, which is why I moved to mirrorless to address (auto focus and manual controls were chief among these). Since 2019, I have watch both the Leica M and Q series reviews and experiences. A dear friend and fellow professional photographer is a life long Leica shooter(mainly film) and has encouraged me to jump onboard for decades. So after the Q3 announced, I pre-ordered and am awaiting the experience. The 60MP allows good flexibility to crop/compose even with the wide 28MM lens (which, by all accounts, is excellent). The ergonomics are not as preferred but the manual controls allow fast changes and feel great. I am hopeful the Q3 tradeoffs and workflow will fit my desired use case. Thanks for the great review and tacit encouragement. Keep pressing forward. Cheers!!
Nice review, but what about the DOF in 35 and 50mm. Is this the same like you compare with the 1.4 lenses ? I think the DOF is based on the 28mm and the other modes are just crop, the same you do in LR f.e.
Indeed.. still Q is aamzing. Love my q2m
Your Vocabulary is Amazing Mr. Hugh Brownstone.
And you look like James Gunn so that's cool.
So sorry to learn of your misfortune, but happy you can find a measure of comfort from our work. Lake District is wonderful!
I have owned a Q1 since day 1. This will be my first real Q upgrade. Great video, as always, thanks!
Well.. who needs two kidneys? 😂
Now take a bow. ;-)
Thank you, John, for such generous encouragement! 🙏🏻🖖🏻
Truly my pleasure! 😊🖖🏻
I hope this means the Q2 used market will cool off a bit to where I could afford one. The Q3 looks lovely, but I don't need the improvements it offers - not even the autofocus as I find that manual often helps me make a better composition. So I might finally be able to spring for the Q2.
Bon chance!
Buy my Q2 Reporter for $4500 😅
@@A1000Truths Heh. I'll need the price to come down a wee bit more. In the meantime I have a daughter's wedding to pay for first too.
Hmmm…
You just might. I’m shooting with our own Q3. Stay tuned!
It is becoming increasingly clear that the cooperation between Leica and Panasonic is bearing great fruit for both sides. For both companies. (By the way, Wetzlar is only 30 km from my hometown).
thank you for your lovely review: I enjoy the way you discuss these things with wit, intelligence and humour - best wishes
Much appreciated, Daniel. 😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
Not only am I getting a review of the Q3 (in ways that matter), I'm getting Jon Stewart too (ok, without the laughs)!
Talk about value.
Thanks!
That’s a good and interesting point. Nice way to look at it
Valid point
When was the last time a well made digital camera gave up on you? I’ve had 25 of them probably and never had a failure plus. An M11 and 35 summilux is 2.5 times the price.
It’s a real Leica though. The Q is kinda half Leica
Sell everything.
U might expire tomorrow. 😅😅😅
@@MrFL08 You are right, I never faced a hardware issue so far. Just the idea made me shiver😅
Another exceptional video😮 thank you so much
😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
I don’t think you mentioned it - sorry if you did - the sensor in the Q3 is now BSI which should along with the option to reduce the pixel count with pixel binning make the Q3 a low light monster
I didn't - thanks for the note!
Waiting for an answer
Thank you so much, Hugh. If I ever own a Leica, it will be a Q3. I do wish I could shoot with the Exa my dad bought just after he was discharged from the Army 80 years ago.
Wow! 80 years ago! In any case: my pleasure, Barry!
Excellent dry sense of humor. Best intro video I have watched on the Q3. Thank you. Especially on cropping.
My pleasure! 😊🖖🏻
I've been pro for 35yrs + I have cameras for my studio - high end Hass etc - but the Q's - oh dear they are a must have for my personal camera - I have had them all and this one will also be on the cannot wait to get it list
Enjoy!
You are incorrigible, John! 😉
@@3BMEP Thanks in large part to you! ~\8^)
I had the original Q and never got on with it. I currently shoot an M10R with 50 and 35 Lux lenses. The Q3 is tempting but I think it still has way too much futz as you put it. What I would really like is that EVF in place of the rangefinder on an M...
I understand.
@@3BMEP I knew you would!
Interesting to see Leica add ‘film simulations’ to their camera for jpeg images. I can’t wait for that strategy to become mainstream and have significant user customization.
grateful to have stumbled upon your channel; great insights, thank you.
Hello Hugh thank you for sharing. I'm conflicted should buy a Q3 or a 907X CFV 100C, sadliy can only have one lol
😊🖖🏻
Your video inspired me to do some more research on Q3. I got back into the Leica Q system after watching your video.
Enjoy!
When comparing crops on Q3 with 35 and 50 mm lenses, it would be fair to say, that it no longer keeps f1.7 looks in depth of field. It’s equivalent of putting f1.7 FF lens on APS-C.
Please see pinned comments.
True, DOF is a function of distance from the subject. 👍🏻
Just ordered a Leica Q3 after finding one in stock by the blessing of the gods. Can't wait to get it. Thanks for the review!
Enjoy!
Nice analogy Hugh, its a fantastic camera and a nice extension on a great line of cameras
I have had a Q for a few years, it is amazing but I felt no need to get a Q2, so was not expecting to want a Q3, but I was wrong.
I will be looking to get one as soon as I am able, this thing is amazing and life is too short, not to be capturing memories with it.
Fantastic Review.
Life IS short. Enjoy!
Hugh is such an articulate “enthusiast “
For fine camera gear , he has convinced me to order the Q3 43 , and today I bought a Q3 new .. am afraid to watch his next video
Thanks, Jeff - definitely having fun with it!! 😊
I’ll let you know; hold that thought. 😉🖖🏻
Will put it into the queue, no promise on timeframe!
@@3BMEP Thank you. Looking forward to it
HI! I preordered my Q3 on June this year and received it in August. Went to Brussels on vacation 15 days on September and took around 400 raw pictures of Art Nouveau buildings. When I came back started to work on them and in September I bought an Q2M all from the local Leica shop in Barcelona. Period....
I guess you enjoyed it! 😊🖖🏻
Indeed! My first Leycas. Very much.
Thanks for the great video. I am curious to know if you think the Q3, for black and white photography, will be better than the Q2 Monochrome.
It is for me because - holding all of the other differences aside - retaining color channel information for the edit is important.
@@tor2919 In the Leica Q2 and Q2 Monochrom series, in any case, there is no way to charge the battery via USB.
It remains to be seen just how long I will twist in the back order winds… In the mean time, I will continue watching Hugh’s video on repeat :)

ugh! Thanks for the review Huge... I want! But can't at the moment. But man that camera and it's features are compelling, even more now.
The Q lens FOV is already ~25mm unless they've increased the distortion correction crop on the Q3. I'm not sure if this is due to users looking at the horizontal FOV and reporting 25mm vs Leica using the diagonal FOV and coming up with 28mm or what.
I’ve heard similar things. Don’t know either!
You present with style and clarity. so interesting. I have the Q, its great. I want the Q3...Damn you! :)

I won't take that bet! ;)
You'll want the faster AF tilt screen and improved sensor why not? @@3BMEP
Amazing what megapixel count can do for any lens innit? ..love your enthusiasm Hugh. Oh and I did notice every example photo( nice) you posted were B&W conversions ...
Correct. No need for me personally to go Monochrom, and I have a budget, too. 😊🖖🏻
The Q3 is my first ever Leica, for decades I have been photographing with Nikon gear - but now I guess the Nikon stuff will begin collecting dust 😊
I had the chance to visit the Leica factory in Wetzlar/Germany, and watching the people collect all the bits and pieces together manually until it finally is a superb camera or lens was absolutely fascinating.
Now I do better understand what a friend said years ago - a Rolex is not just a watch, and a Leica is not just a camera.😊
Thanks for sharing your opinion 👍😊
Enjoy!
Would if I could, but hey that is one beautiful camera and worth raving about.
When selecting 50mm crop, do you still get the bokeh?
You get the bokeh of the crop equivalent. Thus 1.786 * f/1.7 ~= f/2.8
Great review! I like the last part about the 'photographer . That Q3 looks really nice.
Outstanding - and congrats for multiple reasons.
Look at Sony a7C II with 24-50/2.8 or 20-70/4.
@@3BMEP Thanks! Will look into it. Had to mention it... it's to have as a compact alternative to my X2D on holidays. Thanks again.
The 28mm lens can crop down to shoot 35, 50, 75 & 90. But aren't you always shooting at 28mm? You're not going to get the separation or optics of a 75mm lens, right?
What does that last shot in the montage look like to you?
Is there a difference between (1) shooting at 35mm to 90mm or (2) cropping the image in post?

An homage to your father and a concretization of that homage in a Q3… well, that sounds pretty good to me. 😊🖖🏻
Yeah, but chicks dig Leica
$6k camera in 2023 is for people with severely distorted understanding of what photography is all about.
On the contrary, this is the first time I have bought a high end camera which ticks all the boxes.
The C8K video capabilities of the Q3 is completely underestimated.
I would like to think that the high price translates to a commitment by Leica to work hard on the firmware to support:
1. Improved audio via USB
2. External recording via USB to SSDs and hopefully to CinemaDNG in preference to ending to using HDMI output.
3. Connections to Gimbals
4. Increased features in FOTOS via cable - very much like the Monitor+ app for with the Sony A1.
At 2:15 in you have a ERROR freeze for several seconds in your video
Not an error - a freeze frame to give viewers time to read the note on the screen.
@@3BMEP I thought so but just thought I would mention

Great appraisal Hugh. Having just got in from work here in the UK I am presented with an avalanche of Q3 prompts from TH-cam, and being a man who demands the absolute best I naturally chose you to open the batting for me! 😉
The Q3 is a compelling option.

👍🏻🖖🏻
I had a look here in Aus. $9800! Not surprised, but nobody who isn’t a dentist or in the top 5% would call a $10,000 camera “value for money”.
Let’s not target dentists. But your basic point stands, agreed.
you Sir are brilliant. you really should have a mainstream tv show.
Sold. Getting the Q3. When does your grip launch for purchase? I'm not a pro, but your business case / value proposition for the Q3 is totally compelling. Great video and thanks for your encyclopedic knowledge.
Enjoy! As for the grip? Pre-orders opening very soon. Hold that thought!
After watching your powerful , entertaining , and persuasive videos .. I did buy , as found someone other than some ruthless Philistines who want my first born ( I have no children:) in excessive markups …. It finally starting cooling off enough over here in Phoenix .. wow! I certainly am delighted as I am certain I never photographed with any lens this great !, it does inspire us !, and not in a fanboy kind of way …
The detail, dynamic range and colors make me glad I finally started saving money a few months back as I am thinking my young wife can make the leap from iPhones up to the 343 ,, or maybe I just want one and can justify it this way …. Hold that …….
Hah! Enjoy (clearly you already do)! 😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
Fantastic review! I believe the Q3 is amazing. I am glad you enjoyed it. I hope to see more work of yours with the Q3!
Thanks, Will!
You are really compelling me to go get a Q3. By the way the shots were excellent. Especially the last shot looking downtown only in NY. Thanks again Hugh.
My pleasure, Thomas! 😊🖖🏻
Where do you drill into the body to add a microphone jack?
Hugh could you please tell me which music you used in your video, when you present the first series of photos ..?
I like it very much but don‘t know the artist and the song…
Thanks for your videos which are always a highlight of the wekk..
I do wish it allowed a square aspect ratio. Like the SL series has. Always love your enthusiasm Hugh. Smiles.
😊🖖🏻
I sometimes feel a pang of regret for selling my X100V. But perhaps it was the universe telling me that I needed a Leica in my life. And that maybe, that Leica is the Q3. Damn you, Hugh.
😈😉🙏🏻
That crop was incredible ✌🏻
Right? 😊🖖🏻
The only one Thing that's missing from beeing perfect is internal memory or a second SD... than it would also fit my wedding-photography needs.... 😊
I understand.
Ive had my Q3 for many months - being one of the first to prise one out of my dealers hands
Magic Stupendous and ust all good leica quality - leica have hit a home run and more with this camera - I have a M8 but thats reserved for black and white becuase now I have this powerhouse
I'm not sure i understand the praise for the cropping modes as from what I can tell the raw file still has the full focal length. Is there any difference between the crop mode and cropping in post?
I will say this makes the recent Q review more interesting for those of us still dreaming about owning a Leica one day.
No difference.
I hear you!
Ah finally, think it’s time for me to jump in and try a Leica
Did you say the Q lens is superior to the 10k M 28mm summilux? Can you elaborate?
Does the Q3 share exact same sensor as the M11? ...upgrading from Q2 to Q3 :)
Exact? I couldn’t say. Remarkably similar / identical from an output perspective? Thus far: yes. 😊💯
Sounds like a plan to me! 😊
Ummm…. Thank you? 😜😊🖖🏻
can you tether with this updated camera or still have to quick view via the Leica app ?
As I recall - no, it’s too early in the morning, I may be wrong, so - I’ll have to get back to you!
Journey to Leica Q3
I was a fairly early adopter of the Fuji X100 series (2013) as my EDC. Cheers!!
Please keep me posted!
Nice review, but what about the DOF in 35 and 50mm. Is this the same like you compare with the 1.4 lenses ? I think the DOF is based on the 28mm and the other modes are just crop, the same you do in LR f.e.
Correct. Please see my pinned comment.
This was the singularly most helpful, erudite, and broadly thinking review of the q3 that I have seen. And yes, I have already ordered mine!
Enjoy! 😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
