Vini Ponica | Artists on Record starring ADIKA
In the 1960s, Poncia formed a songwriting team with Peter Anders.
Their songs were recorded by artists including The Ronettes, Bobby Bloom, and Darlene Love etc.
During the 1970s, Poncia became Ringo Starr's co-writer, and appeared on several of his solo albums.
Ponica also produced albums for Melissa Manchester and Lynda Carter's 1978 album Portrait. As a songwriter, he wrote songs for Jackie DeShannon, Martha Reeves, and Tommy James. Poncia is also listed as co-writer on "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" with Leo Sayer.
Poncia was brought in to produce Kiss's 1979 album Dynasty and co-wrote their hit song "I Was Made for Lovin' You" from that album.

Same, to me it was Kiss's sellout album and I never bought another. I've changed my mind since then.
I liked the Dynasty album, especially when it came out. I was only 9 but going through KISS withdrawals. They hadn't produced new material as a full band since 1977. In summer of 79, my father moved us from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and I was depressed I had no friends. Then out of nowhere, finally, a new KISS album! Accidentally played side 2 first. Heard Charisma and immediately enjoyed it. Shortly afterwards met some new friends and 1979 quickly became a nice year.
Ace had the best solo album.
I've known who Vini Poncia is since I was 12 in 1979.
Took me until I was 57 in 2024 to know what he looks and sounds like! My life has come full circle and I can now die happy! haha

KISS Dynasty is top notch album. To this day don't matter where I'm driving around the world ! Paris , Montreal , Toronto , Halifax, Dolbeau, Lisbon, London England , New York obviously everybody knows the songs !! It now 35 years later and I was made for loving you is still played everywhere around around the globe . Its a global hit.

Dynasty is my all-time favorite Kiss album. Every song is a gem, every performance is top shelf (inc. Anton FIg's drumming).

Dynasty is a good Rockalbum. Ace Frehley nailed it with 2000 man, Hard times and Save your love. Peter’s Dirty living and Genes Charisma are good rocking tunes too.
If Eddy Kramer would have produced it the album would have sounded more heavy…

Dynasty was my first Kiss record at the tender age of 9 and I’ve always loved it. Even Unmasked has some great songs but just suffers from an anemic production. But that sound was perfect for Is That You which is one of my favorite Kiss songs ( I know it’s a cover).
Dynasty and unmasked were INSULTS to true KISS fans. I can see how CHILDREN would like it, but CHILDREN love "Barney" too. It's at about that level.

Dynasty is a much underrated album. Sure Know Something, Charisma, X-Ray Eyes are great songs like IWMFLY. Great interview which could have been longer. I bet Vini would have had more great stories to share.

Peter's solo album is hands down the best of the 4. Ace's is #2.
Dynasty is the BEST Kiss album there is, with The Elder #2 and Destroyer #3.
I still have the Dynasty poster (that came with the record) on my wall along with the 4 posters with the solo albums. Those were the days!

Vini is truly a legend!! This interview is one of the best!! I love Scandel. "Warrior" and "Good by to you" a few of my favorites. Vini has worked with incredible legends too. "I was made for loving you" is one of my all time favorite Kiss songs, besides "Detroit Rock City". Stefan you have brought some fabulous guests and their stories back to life. I would have never heard them if it wasn't for you!!! Thank you for being so compassionate to these guests. I love it💖💖💖👍. Its just to bad some people can't appreciate what you do. Vini Poncia worked very well with Paul. He praised Paul's "multitalent".
And he seemed to like Paul.

"I Was Made For Lovin' You" were my initiation songs. When I heard, Paul played all guitars on "Sure Know Something" my admiration for him even grew more.

Paul is so under rated as a vocalist
He was, not anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I love all Paul’s songs but nowadays he can’t sing even the happy birthday song without sounding like an old raspy rooster. He should’ve stop singing a long time ago but I think his ego didn’t let him stopped.

Some great pop/metal songs
I absolutely love Dynasty! It has a very distinctive sound! For what it lacks in guitar crunch, it makes up for with power and punch! Its an incredibly crisp sounding album that sounds great cranked up loud! The only thing Dynasty lacks is one more Gene tune. Naked City from Unmasked would've been perfect on Dynasty!
Ringo Starr's best albums were when he worked together with Vini Poncia. Too bad they didn't continue.
Great interview with a behind-the-scenes KISS legend! Then again, every one of ADIKA's interviews I've seen have been amazing. Count me among the many who really love the Dynasty album. Here's a funny story: just a few weeks ago I watched a "Tribute to Peter Criss" video here on TH-cam, where multiple high-profile drummers paid homage to Peter. Nate Morton, drummer on The Voice and Paul's Live to Win solo tour (killer drummer, FYI) , talked EXTENSIVELY about how his intro to KISS was Dynasty and how he loved Peter's playing on the record. I hope someone, somewhere, someday tells him that was Anton Fig on all but one song!

"I Was Made For Loving You" was disastrous for the band, but for Desmond Child, it was the beginning of his meteoric success! The original KISS was in frazzle! It was a shot in the foot!
But live, it absolutely cranked.

I'm surprised to hear that Paul Stanley was such a good guy in the studio with Vinny.
The Kiss Dynasty album was definitely a departure from the original Kiss sound and many people frowned upon the album but even worse they're following album Unmasked really threw people off except for me. I thought the album was completely brilliant from first note to last.
Unmasked is one of those albums where they say if you were stuck on an island for the rest of your life and had only five albums to take along with you, which Five albums would you take, providing there would be power in an audio system located somewhere on the island of course, but anyway, Unmasked would definitely be in those top five albums that I would take a long on the deserted island to live the rest of my life on. It is an extremely underrated album and it's probably one of the most underrated albums of rock pop history of all time!!
Paul Stanley is the woody Allen of hard rock…. Says his analyst.
He really resembles Keith Richards-like, modern day Keith. Especially when he smiles.
Back in 1979 when I heard that Vini Poncia was going to produce the next Kiss album, I was worried. The Peter Criss solo album that Vini produced was too soft and the worst of the 4 Kiss solo albums. I speculated this could carry over to Kiss but was I ever wrong. Dynasty blew me away the first time I dropped the needle. I had already heard 'I Was Made For Loving You' because the 45 rpm single was already released a few weeks before Dynasty. A radio station in my area was playing the advance single. Unmasked is a great album too.
Wow. This explains a lot. No wonder the only solo album that actually sounded like KISS was Ace’s album. They went into the studio with a soft rock/disco producer. I consider those albums KISS’s identify crisis period.
I would like to hear Vinnies reasons for not having Peter play on Dynasty?
Bs listen to dirty living and The dynasty tours Peter still had it.
Was it at that time when Bill Aucoin sent Peter to therapy? And then to drumming lessons. When he gave an interview in 2001 he even compared Vinnie Vincent's paranoia with Peter's (different manifestation).

I think Ace did his best vocals on Dynasty...Paul's vocal abilities were starting to reach new heights around that time too.
If people take Peter's solo record for what it is, jazz, big band, and soul, it's a good record to listen to. Those are his influences. If you take it as a rock record, then yea, it's gonna suck

Check out the 1969 LP by Anders & Poncia, cleverly titled "The Anders & Poncia Album". Bad title, great album. Lost sixties classic.

Peter could've played on some tracks. But none? Yeah he was drugged up. So was Ace. And he played. I think from Vini point of view would've been a new side to it. We've only heard Gene n Paul. And their not always credible.
About Peter? Vinni said already, he didn't want to be involved in their internal conflicts! Why should he talk about Peter's addiction and his paranoia? (Bill Aucoin RIP mentioned this in 2001, interview on TH-cam).

Uhhhhh… kinda skipped over that whole “Peter doesn’t drum on the record” thing, huh guys. It’s only the one thing everybody wants to hear about.
Quite interesting, but was it by design that the interview ignored Ace's clear influence and strength on the record, over and above Gene?
The thing is, Paul and Gene have bashed Peter and Ace forever, but have said that from 74-77 that Peter and Ace were amazing and very good!!! Paul stopped at that and never said a good thing about both of them, but Gene said he still loves them and he was disappointed because the talent and potential if Peter and Ace would have worked harder and practiced, but the coke and booze and partying ruined both of them!!! I still think that the Catman and Space Ace after the solo albums and that Phantom of the Park movie pushed Peter and Ace over the edge, not just the coke and booze, but they were mentally cashed out!!! Sadly
Paul Stanley’s Soul Station sounds like every awful wedding band I had to endure at Leonard’s of Great Neck.

Kiss started out hard as hell jamming. But the shorter and puffier their hair became, the crappier the music
Gean and Paul despise Ace and Peter… but it is very telling that 95% of their set list for the past 30 years are songs that Peter and Ace either Cowrote or played on!…. Maybe Gean should seek advice from Paul’s psychiatrist.
But Vini Poncia explained he didn't want to be involved in internal conflicts. This was not his job!

Production was way too thin on Dynasty and Unmasked. Not enough punch and low end. Fig's drums could have definitely had a better sound.
I hated disco Kiss. The first 6 studio albums are optimum Kiss. Ace had the only solo album worth any weight.
Bleh, Ill take Creatures, Asylum and Lick It Up over that 70s crap with Ace and his 3 Aceisms he plays over and over. Best song on Aces solo album was a cover. Typical Ace.

Love Paul, but Paul + VP was the downfall, the worst for a hard rock band like KISS. If you want to do "pop," go do a solo pop album, but it was a horrible time for KISS fans to hear that stuff. Wahi' Valleys
