    Im waiting for my clutch kit to show up. Thought about having the shop do it for about 300 bucks but after watching a couple videos im gonna do it myself. Thats part of having a motorcycle. I think of it like as a hobby. Good luck to anyone else who is going to tackle this little job.

      This is the difference between an avocation and a hobby. A hobby is a money-sink, but a vocation makes or saves you money. Literally this is how we can have nicer things than we'd usually afford.

    Great video you are correct on splitting the crank i did it on my old motor 😬 the main reason for the starter clutches going out is the kickback when shutting the motor down. Might I add if doing this job and buying aftermarket buy the heavy duty kit on eBay that comes with the middle gears between flywheel and starter the aftermarket ones have a dampener spring in the gears to reduce the impact from shutting shutting down

    Good video, Paul. I want to buy the OEM parts for the starter clutch kit, but there's a $60.00 starter clutch replacement kit. On this cheaper kit: The only part that is missing the small sprocket. Is this just an additional part that's optional, or does it play a part in making the starter clutch operate right- that putting the old small sprocket will not do? Do you know?

      @@PaulPhillipsFix I did it! I suck as a motorcycle mechanic, but it's working. Stupid aftermarket company sent me one of the parts that did not fit- the one that you have to torque and threat-lock- the holes did not aligned, so I used the old one. (And old sprocket too) It turns-out that the original berrings were bent slightly (Damaged) so when I turned it both ways and it would turn roughly, so the new berrings, which looked totally different, where the key. They turn one way, but locked the other way. I lubricated everything with synthetic oil and put everything back on. I started my V-Star and it started the first crank and it ran beautifully. I took it for a spin. I however, did not torque any of my bolts. I couldn't figure out the torque wrench. I went to buy a digital torque reader and it felt like I was going to strip them, so I just used my Bosch, 18 volt impact driver. Looked tight enough. At some point, I'm going to buy the gasket again and have someone that knows how to torque to do it again. Thanks, Paul for your advice.

      The starter clutch is able to turn freely in one direction and locks in the other. Why did you go through and check your top dead center you didn't have an issue with the timing you said it was the one-way clutch that's why Magneto has a Woodruff key can only get it in the right position you can't get it a hundred and eighty out

      Most certainly can throw the timing out on these being they are a v twin i bought my bike for 300 from a guy who didn't know what he was doing and blew the timing changing the starter clutch

      Very strange I and missing one of the pins that goes inside the spring. I took the back gear off with the starter clutch and put in a box and kept it together. When I took the top gear off there were one 5 pins. It couldn't have fallen out because I took it apart inside the box. 🤔

    • @travisj2695
      @travisj2695 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't have to move the starter motor. I just turned it with the idler gear and got everything lined up. It's slipped right on. I trial started it and the flywheel and gears spun perfect. Now how l do I get the nut torqued down? I tried the strap wrench but it just spins.

    • @PaulPhillipsFix
      @PaulPhillipsFix  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@travisj2695 I did the strap wrench and hit it with a half inch drive impact. Not by the book but it worked.

      That's what I was telling the other guy, not disrespectful just ad u said and I said line em up, and its cool to take off flywheel nut with impact, not cool to put it back on with one, the spec on that nut is 129 ft lbs, overtighten made need a new crank, get the right tools, I am ordering the correct flywheel holder from yamaha at great expence, as in $254, but as a mechanic I will not chance snapping end if crank off to hurry the job, there are nice puller ebay for exactly that mc mines an 04 I had 0 problems removind flywheel, with no damage to crankshaft, universal one will fit but move too much to stay completely parallel gl all be safe
