Dave Mustaine wrote the riffs on this song. When he was booted out just before they were about to record this in ‘83, they changed the arrangements and lead guitars. Lars was thinking ahead so they wouldn’t have legal disputes for song writing credits. The main riff had inspiration from KISS’s song Detroit Rock City.
Metallica actually recorded the mechanix on their demo no life til leather, which also had Dave Mustaine on it playing guitar, he wrote the entire song the mechanix, he brought the song to metallica after previously playing it with his former band panic, it was Lars who suggested the slower part and Dave played it to him, but he and Cliff new it was sweet home Alabama reworked, Lars loved it, so once Dave was fired a week before recording kill em all, and the four horesman was reworked in tbe studio from being the mechanix,, check out Metallica version of the mechanix

Metallica's lyrics are definitely deeper and more meaningful. But the speed and skill of Dave and Megadeth are far superior. I like both bands, but lean more towards Megadeth. Sometimes wonder what kinds of magic could have been if Dave hadn't been kicked out. Oh, he was kicked out for being an out of control alcoholic. What kind of badass do you have to be to get kicked out of a thrash metal band?? haha

Never understood the assumption that speed, which is often used as describing skill is automatically superior in the thrash genre. I like the Mechanix because it's so ridiculous and fun, but I think it's hard to argue that The Four Horsemen isn't a better put together song.

Definitely Kirk playing all the lead. Dave is a great guitarist but Kirk's free flow bluesy style is what sealed the deal for Lars and Jaymz and rushed him into the band 🤘🏾

If you have the chance go listen the first promo tape by Metallica named No Life till leather you can listend The Mechanix on that track list. That song was original a Dave Mustaine song. Dave was the lead guitar player on Metallica then he was kick out from the band and he make Megadeth. Just a few reaction suggestions: The "Unforgiven" triology have an interesting story arc. Metallica did play "Blackend" from their homes a few days ago, search "Metallica Blackend 2020". If you get the opportunity check out Avenged Sevenfold who where inspired by Metallica, "Hail to the king" album maybe where you best hear their influense from them, in songs like "Shepherd of fire". "Afterlife" by Avenged Sevenfold would also be something to check out, it has a very nice solo.

I started listen to Metallica when I was kid, 10 years old back in 1995 and they have been in my heart and soul since then. Yes, on the surface this song is about the four horsemen of the apocalypse from the Book of Revelation, but it works on two levels - fairly obviously, the song's about the band itself. A lot of the debut album is about life as a young band, on the road, partying and playing shows, i.e. what they'd experienced up to that point. The four horsemen are Metallica!
Mechanix may be faster but it does not touch the magic and class that Metallica is. They're song is just plain better! Btw you guys need to react to some live videos. I suggest Seattle 1989 binge and purge!

Given that I mainly picked up the guitar because Of Kirk Hammett, I would like to recommend an album, 😂..I would greatly suggest ANY IF NOT THE ENTIRE ‘Metallica S&M’ Video, as It’s is Metallica at what I believe to be their absolute Finest(Both Musically & James-Vocally!) And I have a nagging suspicion that the lot of you would find Metallica WITH A SYMPHONY to be, Surprisingly, Because at initial glance, HEAVY METAL & A FULL ORCHESTRA SHOULD NOT COMPLEMENT ONE ANOTHER IN THE SLIGHTEST.....BUT I FIND IT EPIC & TO BE ORGANIZED/CONDUCTED IN A MOST MASTERFUL MANNER!! 4 Horsemen is a much better crafted song. There is no argument. The production is better too. The lyrics are silly in the Mechanix. I love Dave but Kirk plays the solo better. It is more enjoyable and that may be production or just Kirk has a better sense of melody.
Megadeth didn't tried to sound like Metallica. Megadeth's lead vocalist and rhytm guitarist Dave Mustaine was playing for Metallica as the lead guitarist. Then James and Lars fired him because of alcoholic problems so they say but it was because Dave Mustaine started to get more famous then Metallica. So The Four Horsemen and many songs in the first 2 albums were originally wrote by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth.
Awesome, I've been telling people that react to videos to not listen to four horsemen without also listening to mechanix. Mechanix was the original name of the song while Dave Mustaine (frontman of Megadeth) was still in Metallica. And since Dave wrote the song (with Cliff Burton I think) he included it in his band's first album after being kicked out of Metallica.
Kirk may recorded that solo but he did not write it. That's the thing! Both ways it's Mustaine's solo as part of the composition. It shares the same opening and very similar ideas.

Mechanix was written in daves previous band . its on metallicas no life till leather demo with daves solo which kirk copied you can hear for yourself . not kirks fault , dave was kicked a month before they recorded the first album so due time constraints he based alot of the solos off daves . As for the slow middle part that was daves joke that lars didnt get . lars says he thought mechanix needed a slow part in the middle and dave played sweet home alabama riff 6:50 and lars loved it . The melodic solo over sweet home alabama is hammets and the new lyrics are james hetfields metal militia , jump in the fire and phantom lord also daves music this lyrics by james and he has more writing credits on their second album

In case of Metal Militia and Phantom lord, yes Dave co-wrote it but he did not wrote the whole songs. Only The Mechanix and Jump in the Fire are his songs as whole. (btw you can hear the original Dave's solo he played in Phantom Lord in the song Return to Hangar which is on the Megadeth album The World Needs a Hero... he kept this solo in his mind all those years and recorded it in this song... pure genius right there)
Nice one, i'm a mahussive Metallica fan (have been since 83), that's definitely Kirk on the four horseman. Great song! 1st time i've heard mechanix and didn't like it at all..not the song, the solo, the lyrics nor the vocals. I like a few megadeth songs but Metallica are many many levels above!
The story is that Dave Mustaine was in Metallica and got kicked out. He actually wrote the song that Metallica kept and put on their album so had every right to take his song back, rename it, and use it for his new band.
The Four Horsemen is superior to Mechanix in every way. Dave would have been better off simply saying "I wrote the best song on Metallica's debut album" instead of recording his vastly inferior version of it.
Just to add... @ 6:50 Metallica copied the start of Sweet Homa Alabama by Lynyrd skynyrd. Kick ass song but yeah they took Dave’s Song and a piece of Lynard added biblical story and bam.... a metal classic.
the four horsemen are the biblical four horsemen...and remember they wrote it when they were arround 18..well its a mature deep stuff and conmplex structure of the musicto have written by a bunch of teenagers

It was Kirk on the recording, None of Dave's playing was on the album. Everything was re-recorded when Kirk came in.
I have been a fan since the Kill 'Em All album ( supporting my fellow country man Lars 🇩🇰) and I have seen them live 17 times. Does not make an expert but if you have questions re. Metallica you can reach out....tend to believe I can answer many of them 😇

Yes, on the surface this song is about the four horsemen of the apocalypse from the Book of Revelation, but it works on two levels - fairly obviously, the song's about the band itself. A lot of the debut album is about life as a young band, on the road, partying and playing shows, i.e. what they'd experienced up to that point. The four horsemen are Metallica!
Mechanix may be faster but it does not touch the magic and class that Metallica is. They're song is just plain better! Btw you guys need to react to some live videos. I suggest Seattle 1989 binge and purge!

Given that I mainly picked up the guitar because Of Kirk Hammett, I would like to recommend an album, 😂..I would greatly suggest ANY IF NOT THE ENTIRE ‘Metallica S&M’ Video, as It’s is Metallica at what I believe to be their absolute Finest(Both Musically & James-Vocally!) And I have a nagging suspicion that the lot of you would find Metallica WITH A SYMPHONY to be, Surprisingly, Because at initial glance, HEAVY METAL & A FULL ORCHESTRA SHOULD NOT COMPLEMENT ONE ANOTHER IN THE SLIGHTEST.....BUT I FIND IT EPIC & TO BE ORGANIZED/CONDUCTED IN A MOST MASTERFUL MANNER!! KozlovRacing yea Dave wrote that riff Kirk wrote the solo. Kirk only had a week to learn all Dave’s solo because lars and James wanted Kirk to use Dave’s solos
4 Horsemen is a much better crafted song. There is no argument. The production is better too. The lyrics are silly in the Mechanix. I love Dave but Kirk plays the solo better. It is more enjoyable and that may be production or just Kirk has a better sense of melody.

Megadeth didn't tried to sound like Metallica. Megadeth's lead vocalist and rhytm guitarist Dave Mustaine was playing for Metallica as the lead guitarist. Then James and Lars fired him because of alcoholic problems so they say but it was because Dave Mustaine started to get more famous then Metallica. So The Four Horsemen and many songs in the first 2 albums were originally wrote by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth.

Awesome, I've been telling people that react to videos to not listen to four horsemen without also listening to mechanix. Mechanix was the original name of the song while Dave Mustaine (frontman of Megadeth) was still in Metallica. And since Dave wrote the song (with Cliff Burton I think) he included it in his band's first album after being kicked out of Metallica.
I wonder where Metallica had been today,if Dave still was in the band,,,what a great song writer,,😉

Kirk may recorded that solo but he did not write it. That's the thing! Both ways it's Mustaine's solo as part of the composition. It shares the same opening and very similar ideas.

Mechanix was written in daves previous band . its on metallicas no life till leather demo with daves solo which kirk copied you can hear for yourself . not kirks fault , dave was kicked a month before they recorded the first album so due time constraints he based alot of the solos off daves .
As for the slow middle part that was daves joke that lars didnt get . lars says he thought mechanix needed a slow part in the middle and dave played sweet home alabama riff 6:50 and lars loved it .
The melodic solo over sweet home alabama is hammets and the new lyrics are james hetfields

@@dallaswinston5906 Kirk did not copied his solo's. He only left a few opening notes the same and then the rest of the solo's are his. In case of Metal Militia and Phantom lord, yes Dave co-wrote it but he did not wrote the whole songs. Only The Mechanix and Jump in the Fire are his songs as whole. (btw you can hear the original Dave's solo he played in Phantom Lord in the song Return to Hangar which is on the Megadeth album The World Needs a Hero... he kept this solo in his mind all those years and recorded it in this song... pure genius right there)

Nice one, i'm a mahussive Metallica fan (have been since 83), that's definitely Kirk on the four horseman. Great song! 1st time i've heard mechanix and didn't like it at all..not the song, the solo, the lyrics nor the vocals. I like a few megadeth songs but Metallica are many many levels above!

The story is that Dave Mustaine was in Metallica and got kicked out. He actually wrote the song that Metallica kept and put on their album so had every right to take his song back, rename it, and use it for his new band.

The Four Horsemen is superior to Mechanix in every way. Dave would have been better off simply saying "I wrote the best song on Metallica's debut album" instead of recording his vastly inferior version of it.

Just to add... @ 6:50 Metallica copied the start of Sweet Homa Alabama by Lynyrd skynyrd. Kick ass song but yeah they took Dave’s Song and a piece of Lynard added biblical story and bam.... a metal classic.
