- Converting a verticle Kohler Magnum 18 to a horizontal.
Something to keep in mind when doing this conversion this way is that you won't have a pickup screen to keep the oil pump from sucking up dirt or shrapnel in the engine. If you're running a filter it should do its job and catch any debri however there is a greater risk for failure so convert at your own risk.
DON'T knock your phone ! Picture QUALITY is amazing ! Your phone get an A+ rating to me !
Nice job , thank's for showing the conversion 😉👍👍🇺🇸
You put grease on drill bit and it pulls the shavings out
Can you please add a complete list of the parts that you need to round up? My students are going to try this on a Cub Cadet engine. Very helpful!
Sorry I didn't see this comment until now but here is a list of what you need.
Horizintal shaft intake manifold,
Throttle linkages for a horizontal shaft engine,
Front cover to replace sump,
Proper distick and tube,
Oil fill tube and cap,
Where do I find all the part for it I had the same engine that I want to Convert
That's a pretty neat conversion. Don't see too many vertical shaft KT's or Magnum's. I think they were only used in Cub Cadet and Craftsman tractors.
Got a yard machine with one
John Deere 317
@@joshuaperry9375 Vertical shaft KT17 in a 317? That would be a first...
@@MichaelTJD60 oops wow I need to read better... Yah I saw horizontal not vertical...
Cool cool I love it. I just picked a tractor it has a briggs twin v horizontal shaft. I'll post a video. I'm just trying to get her running the engine hasn't ran in 15 years
When you swapped the front cover over, was the crankshaft seal the same size? Mine are slightly different
crankshafts are different. vertical crank will be 6 inches longer. also cant adjust valves on a Magnum. the lifter or valve stem has to be grinded down
This is great man do you have a write up on how to do this and what I need to do this to convert it
what year urs,,i have one from the 90s.i used intake and exhaust from a 70's one that was blown,,all bolted up so far, starter gear wrong since it was a points and condenser motor going to a newer setup so hopefully a starter gear works.but also the parts from a 17hp.going on a 18,i need dipstick tube yet,any suggestion
Just wanna make sure I got it right. Really all you needed to do was move the dip stick upwards, make the carbs up right and you’re good to go?
You also need to change the sump out for a front cover like I showed in the video
What did you get that front cover off of to replace the oil pan with
That's pretty cool. So the sump cover swap just lets it pick up oil the right way yeah?
Thats right. It's surprisingly simple
SO, what is the "ADVANTAGE" of sn "Horizontal Shaft" copnaere to a "Vertical Shaft"?
Thanks for sharing!

It may just be the style of engine one of his toys needs
It just depends what you need it for. I like the older garden tractors that use horizontal shaft engines so it made sense for me to convert it.
I have this same engine and I wanna convert it for a mini chopper build
Hey brother. Thanks for the video. I am doin the same conversion, but before I button everything back up, I have a concern about the pickup tube screen not being reused. On the old KT17 horizontal shafts (M18 predecessor with same crankcase) there was a pickup tube with screen at the bottom of the crankcase. Did you end up using a screen with this conversion?
Ya know as dumb as this sounds I never gave that any thought. To answer your question no I did not use a screen. I've ran this engine has been running for two years now and has been worked pretty hard a time or two without issue. But it is a risk you run when converting these engines this way I suppose.
@@offroader94 I bet you didnt install the pickup tube and screen inside the engine that goes to the center bottom of the engine thats used for the m20 version i had to do this conversion because the only crank case i could find was an MV20 block to replace the m20 block that had thrown a rod through the block all because the Governor came apart!
The parts required how hard are they to get or are they still commonly available on eBay??
It might take you a little while to find all the pieces but you can usually find them on eBay.
What was the reasoning for the front cover swap?
I have no need for a vertical shaft engine but needed another horizontal shaft
Do you have the model number for that front plate? Also how did you hook up the oil pressure gauge? Is there a spot for it in the front plate that you got?
I don't have the number for the plate unfortunately. There is a pipe plug right above the oil filter that you have to remove and that's where you plumb in an oil pressure gauge
offroader94 Okay, thanks for the response! 🙂
What size drill bit did you use for the dipstick? Thanks!
I’d like to know as well
Do you still have the 94 chevy 6.5 Detroit ?
No I sold it two years ago

I got me a 18 magnum in a craftsman gt6000, it aint runnin good, might need a carb cleen, or a valve job
