I f****** love that mandaloregaming actually knows about patlabor! Probably one of the best examples of the 100% realistic robot genre. As they require constant maintenance and upkeep they have a very limited amount of ammo supply (usually only six shots for the revolver Cannon per outting) they can only operate in the field for a short amount of time(3 hours) as their generator can keep working or up to 12 hours if they have access to their flatbed transport trucks to replace batteries. Also it was a series that depicted Mechs not being used in Wartime, but being used for police work to deal with disgruntled construction workers who were using their own construction robots to cause damage to public property. Orin rescue recovery operations clearing away large amounts of debris and Rubble in the cases of earthquakes or fire outbreaks. It was a really interesting world to see where mechanized Vehicles were instead used for construction purposes and police protection and enforcement instead of the everyday average non-stop battling that we always see in most military Mecha anime. The only other show that I could say was equally on par with depicting 100% realistic mechs has to be armored Trooper votoms. Well smaller than your average battlemech and much much smaller than say a Gundam or even a labour they were definitely used in a more realistic way they required constant upkeep they required Fuel and also they were pretty much designed to be disposable they could carry a hell of a lot of Firepower to hit hard as s*** but they were about as well armored as a tinfoil suit one good shot to the Torso and boom you're dead they were designed to be easily disposable and basically be able to be recovered and repaired using scrap Salvage. Realistic Mecha genre is such a rare thing n so unappreciated. I loved the idea originally in Titanfall where once you're giant robot ended up as scrap you were just able to bail out and then you were on 1st person trying to find another one even if it meant jacking one of the enemies Bots. That same thing occurred a lot in armored Trooper votoms.
'Course, there's the question on whether or not he finished both the The Early Days+Movies 1 and 2 continuity and the TV Series+The New Files continuity.
Muv-Luv is more "realistic", tbh. This is the only mecha I know which actually had a plausible reason for humans using robots, as the enemy can just shoot plains from the sky and crush heavy tanks like tin cans.
Born 1993, it was one of first game I ever played. Had no idea it's called anime or whatever, I just played it, loved the mechs, shoot outs and these fancy Japanese names from Japanese language which sound like you constantly declare war on somebody - Sanjuro Makabe going in. Lol, great times. Underrated game, because just like Blood 2 it had it's issues and few months later came Half-Life 1 which completely wiped out any competition. Tough luck, but it's still a unique game.
I like this game but Half Life surpass it in many way and they have many interesting mod and fun multiplayer too. In case Half Life is amazing in many aspect.
There was a lot of cut stuff from Shogo because team was too ambitious considering it's size and time constraints to finish development on schedule. Playing as kid level, which served to flesh out the story, loading screens (instead of dark blue background with a bit of text) and few extra levels were taken out. Right after Shogo they got transferred to second team to help a bit with Blood 2, which tbh is much worse than Shogo. Poor sales of Shogo also resulted in cancellation of two expansion packs.
this game almost feels like a fangame, between the goofy tone and all the references. It's a real blast to play though, fairly challenging but not impossible. i honestly wish more games would have this kind of style, it's very comfy.

I think i played this game when i was but a wee lad; i remember getting stuck early and certainly didn't find all of this depth that you've uncovered. Great video. What an incredible game.
Amazing video. What a game. I actually played this in my teen years and had so much fun with it... and back then it all made sense to me. It's so weird seeing this video and how crazy this game actually was. Thanks for the nice flashbacks! ;)
Sir I just want to thank. I played this game on PC when I was about 7 or 8 years old. It's since been lost in time and for years I couldn't remember what the game was. All I remembered was mech suits, first person shooting, and weird futuristic Japanese pop culture. BUT NOW I am reunited with this game, and shall play it once again!
I love your comedic review of a game I enjoyed playing back in the day. I love the sound track, and the game play on my Windows 98 system was fun. I guess I got caught in the anime adventure and didn't see the flaws. Either way, I appreciate the review and getting the game to work on modern systems.
Mark Johnson i wish he would insert a small pause after delivering this kind of jokes. Makes it very painful to take it in when he immediately continues on with no delay.
@@othername4365 I personally prefer to be surprised by a joke (did I just hear that right?) and rewind, or find new ones (those comedy reviews from Sseth and Mandalore are worth watching multiple times) over an obvious "laughter pause" (it's bad, but even worse if the joke wasn't funny)
@@Mic_Glow I agree. I think the problem with a pause is that if the joke doesn't land, it really doesn't land. Like the person not laughing is either confused or put off even more.
I played this game as a kid way back in high school, and always treasured it as this weird memory that nobody else ever seemed to have experienced. It was such a strange, hilarious game, even if it was ludicrously hard at points. Thank old games for cheat codes, and thank you for covering this unique little gem.

Thats insane you had to jump through all those hoops to get it to work, considering its a GOG game :S But the nearest game at the time was probably Bungie's Oni (which I very briefly worked on :D)
First FPS I can say I finished completely. This game was THE SHIT. If you ever have a chance to pick it up, do it. The gameplay is tight and at this point it's like a breath of pre-2000 gaming. And running around in a giant mecha running over people and looking how they burst into gigantic fountains of giblets is always fucking fun.
In regards to the explosions; you see those "shells" from the explosion radius? If my assumptions are correct, yea, that's doing continuous damage until it fades, instead of the now-industry-standard of just having explosions deal a single "wave" of damage, they had an explosion radius which deals damage for as long as you're within the blast.
I remember playing this classic with my grammar school/early childhood best friend. The game was fast-paced, and had the Japanese vibe to it, at the time of Dragon Ball's top popularity. However, I do believe it would have been better suited for older audiences (I believe I was around the age of 8 when I first played it). Overall, thank you for the pang of nostalgia rushing down my spine!
Just finished a playthrough of this game. Thanks for helping me getting it up and running. The extra credits after the credits were quite enjoyable as well was the mention of how expensive the intro video was.
i betrayed my army on the first mission i was a kid then, and didnt understand english when the guy wuoldnt let me in, i just blast everyone in the base and stole the mecha lmao
As a Gundam fan I can tell you that the suits don't look a whole lot like in Gundam, but then again nothing does because it's so iconic that every other mecha thing wants to distance themselves from it. Except the transformable mode because that might be a reference to the Mobile Armors from Gundam, which usually are faster than normal Mobile Suits and are non humanoid, and this game is literally called "Mobile Armor". The major difference is that usually Mobile Armors are also more heavily armed so meh.
This was one of my favorite games in college. I just have such great memories of this game. The game was just amazingly quirky, with great combat. Nothing not to like imo.
Grew up playing the hell out of this game, I'd even go as far as to say THIS is what got me into gaming. The single player was funny and sometimes frustrating, but the multiplayer was what really made this game shine. It was so fast paced and with the mech's ability to go in and out of vehicle mode to change up your movement speed and dodging ability really made combat intense. Shoutout to the SKA, DFA, and TXS clans from back in the days of MSN gaming zone. Hope you fellas are doing well. RIP Killer.rez users.
Ohh man, pls review robotech battlecry, long time favorite game ♥ Also since you brought attention to the rooms with anime characters names, R. Hunter is Rick Hunter, from Robotech ^^ I love the use of Robotech Battlecry's music in this vid too! ^^
I really want a remake of this. I think it would be awesome to run around as a mecha pilot and see the cheeseball comedy hold up in modern day graphics.
Shogo was a great experience back in the day when it was released. I remember it being challenging, but not quite as unfair as in the video. Maybe that's because I was younger then, or maybe it's somehow a side effect of running on faster systems? Probably the former. One thing that's for sure I don't think it's aged well at all graphically, I'm sure people will enjoy it now still, but it's harder to get past that, when at the time it was a little bit more impressive, as lower resolutions also helped to hide the lack of detail.
The most amazing feature of Shogo Mobile Armor Division was the multiplayer game. More specifically the laser "tractor Beam" feature in the Mech war mode plus 100% accuracy extreme zoom sniping in that mode which required 2, 3 or more sniping shots on an enemy mech to kill/destroy it. That meant people did not fight each other on the ground, but in 3 dimensions. You could move your mech instantly to any area in the game. And the environment had a few clutches that made for perfect sniper hiding spot. Because of all of this, especially the tractor Beam.feature, Shogo is most favorite game if all time.
I played this back when I was a teen and I still remember how the combination of "gore" and Anime felt like a fever dream. Back then I didn't speak a word English and so the humor was completely lost on me, but somehow I managed to beat the game... ...and it's cheap endboss.
I know I'm late to this video, but man am I so glad you did this review. I just ran across my old Shogo disc and remembered how much I played this game (like, I think I finished it 3 or 4 times). And while looking for help in trying to install it on my modern machine, I found your video. Instant nostalgia. Just the opening music took me back! The cat level, the transforming, the laser weapon (which I found to be the most OP of them all) -- all of it so quirky and fun.
ive seen this review three times now because its good and funny, and also the background music used was getting to me because ive heard it before, and now i know from where, and i love it.
I absolutely adored this game when I was a kid. I would play it every time I would visit my dad's. And yes, it is a giant pain in the ass to get it to work now.
IIRC enemy precognition and ridiculous damage may be side effects of the game running at much higher frame rate tham what it was designed for. Same thing happened with Blood for instance - if your PC was too good, and your FPS went above 60-70, crawling hands would kill you almost instantly, while at ~30 they choke you slowly. Try using a framerate limit down to 30-40 and see what happens. Also "cat eating" is a pussy joke.
This takes me way back. Got it as a bonus with my favorite gaming magazine and as a mecha anime fan was pumped to play it. Think i sped like a month playing it and finished it like 3 times. Think i need to buy it on steam and give it another go :)
I was really enjoying binge watching your videos, but after you had a whole segment where you dunked on the modern cinematic masterpiece that is K-ON! I don't know if I can continue to trust your taste
I dont know why, but quake 2, this game, and other 90s fps running on this idtech engine have a great charm to it. With the fps, high res, but low models and poly gets me.
Jedi Knight 1 was my favorite of that style. When the resolution is cranked up, so everything’s got that OpenGL blur which somehow made it look better back then.
Shogo was the 1st FPS game that I completed, it was so awesome, I had never seen graphics, gameplay and weapons like it had. I always found it weird that I was the only one who knew about this awesome game, now I know, Half Life was a real game killer.

I played both Shogo and Half Life when they came out and I loved Shogo so much more.
But I was also like 7 years old...
@The Dolphin Police *HIPSTER DETECTED*
Poor sales of Shogo also resulted in cancellation of two expansion packs.
half life aged horribly in every single way possible
this game almost feels like a fangame, between the goofy tone and all the references. It's a real blast to play though, fairly challenging but not impossible. i honestly wish more games would have this kind of style, it's very comfy.
Can't wait for Valkyria Chronicles to hear that again.
So. Much. Fucking. Melodrama.
Holy shit, I didnt know a warstory can be that fucking clichéd.
@@900bot2 it's more of a Xcom for dummies. Which suits me phenomenally.

The intro theme featured in F.E.A.R. as an easter egg. it can be heard in a hidden room near at the end of the game
Monolith's MMO, The Matrix Online, also had a Club Shogo within the game that players could visit.
It blowed my mind when I heared this in F.E.A.R.
Dude, I had this game waaaaaay back in the day, it was like $20 at Walmart. Shit blew my mind once I got it to run right. The fact that you could get out of your mech was dope af.

Absolutely amazing. I think i played this game when i was but a wee lad; i remember getting stuck early and certainly didn't find all of this depth that you've uncovered. Great video. What an incredible game.
The voice acting...so good...the dialogue...Can we just give this game awards already? XD
Sounds are literally from Zeta Gundam.
I swear.
I can confirm this.
From Sunrise Studious libraries, to be precise. The sounds when mech transforms - that one was around since VOTOMs, if not first Gundam series.
+Константин Холчев They just went ahead and bought the license to Sunrises effects library?
I believe you, a lot of the mecha noises are Gundam as fuck.

Thats insane you had to jump through all those hoops to get it to work, considering its a GOG game :S
But the nearest game at the time was probably Bungie's Oni (which I very briefly worked on :D)
Given the outcome, there is no amount of hoops to jump through that would make this game not worth jumping through hoops for.
Perhaps now that this video is out, someone else might make the whole process easier.
And perhaps some difficulty modifications

"The devil's paintings." - A new, permanent term.
4:13 You broke my heart. How could you say that? I thought you were one of us.
I appreciate all the effort given to help people run the game, even for a game I don't even own.
The lack of what should cause splash damage in games is obnoxious.
It’s strange because Blood had amazing explosion mechanics.

I'd LOVE to see a sequel or remake for this. I played it back in the day and, as a child who was obsessed with anime, I couldn't help but love it.
The major difference is that usually Mobile Armors are also more heavily armed so meh.
hedgehog3180 It's a licensed game, it's based off of Masamune Shirow's manga of the same name who's art is in the video (and easy to recognize)

Ohh man, pls review robotech battlecry, long time favorite game ♥
Also since you brought attention to the rooms with anime characters names, R. Hunter is Rick Hunter, from Robotech ^^
I love the use of Robotech Battlecry's music in this vid too! ^^
I really want a remake of this. I think it would be awesome to run around as a mecha pilot and see the cheeseball comedy hold up in modern day graphics.
I remember playing this in the 90's. It was one of the best and smoothest user experiences and most polished game I've every played.
Come on, Mandalore, repeat after me: Moe Moe Kyuuuuuun
after a 12 hour shift, i love nothing more than to hear mandalores voice and giant robots fighting
This and Oni are the weird anime-ish games that I'll always remember. And hearing an old man complain about the "Mother lovin' stairs"
Holy shit I used to LOVE this game

I've always been very fond of this game, thanks for making a review of it. Also: that darn cat, man!
This game had AMAZING graphics at the time. I remember going into the game just to shoot the weapons.
Hey Mandalore, you should try out the game called "OFF" its a quirky rpg in the vein of Mother and Undertale. I'd love to hear your take on it.
I was really enjoying binge watching your videos, but after you had a whole segment where you dunked on the modern cinematic masterpiece that is K-ON! I don't know if I can continue to trust your taste
Man I actually like K-On, but the cut between Mandalore's down to earth, dry presentation and...that was surreal.
"I have my orders sir, please be nice to me" should be a famous line.
