And another nice RRR game is about post apocalypse store.steampowered.com/app/285500/Hard_Truck_Apocalypse__Ex_Machina/ I really have no idea why our developers were fans of vehicle roleplaying games, but I fucking loved them. And at least can say this right now about game soundtrack.
I think the Vangers along with the main character are energy beings stuck inside vehicles substitute for their bodies... Maybe, they are former human souls...
I think there might be something to this. Often, more antagonistic than the enemies: the terrain and the controls. And drinking too much (iridescent green) Monster Energy has definitely turned *me* into some kind of mutant.
@@ourDreamcatcher I love the fact the protagonist of that game chugs monster like he does, if the world doesn’t kill him his dietary habits ultimately will. The fact they are in a post apocalyptic world and yet still have monster energy drinks like some new type of taco bell from Demolition Man is also incredibly funny.
You got it all wrong -- it's actually a totally accurate russian driving simulator, you barely control your car, other drivers act like psycho lunatics, the road itself collapses under your wheels, mutated worms tell you what to do and you try your best to make your living by collecting weird substances.
the international version of perimeter is somewhat shortened in comparison to the original supposedly to not puzzle foreign gamers and that led to incoherence of it storytelling.
Yeah only it's not about human-bug war, it's far, far before that. The Cryspo don't even make any appearance in Perimeter. It's all about humans trying to survive these alien worlds, each faction in its own manner.
In an absolute weird way that makes total sense! I remember playing the yanky weird and indecipherable mess that Perimeter was waaaay back. I never ever heard of Vangers, but looking at what is here; Voxel based terrain that terraforms, bugs and humans, something about big phase gate technology, a big bug-war, an indecipherable story and plot... it's all there.

Too many references to Russian/Soviet culture to translate. Like, the ranks: "rab" (slave), "prorab" ("foreman"). When you get the "rabbox" you wear, they cite a poem about the Young Pioneers' tie. Like "Keep it dearly, for it's color is the same as that of our Banner!" I guess the inspiration came from the Kin-Dza-Dza movie (a sci-fi classics)
Interesting, I can see the similarities with Kin Dza Dza. Unfortunately I think most of the references and wordplay were lost in the English translation. To make things worse the GOG version actually has two conflicting translations -- sometimes characters will refer to an item by one term but it has a different name in your inventory, or vehicle names in the store don't match the name in the description.

I unironically love slav games, they are uncaring, unfair and undocumented. So you aren't the "chosen one" in them and that makes them more interesting to finally beat them albeit the occasional frustration.
By the grace of mighty Lipuringa you did it! You actually did it!!!! This game is legendary on so many levels it's hard to think of where to start... And now a legendary reviewer had a go at it! Bloody Glorks, it's Amazing! Just brilliant really! What a day!!! Thank you man! It was a treat for a tired soul of an old school gamer! As a native Russian speaker I really regret that some subtleties of game slang (almost entire language) and humor could have been lost in translation. And yeah I bought this game on release (in 1998 I was 16) and beat it in 2 months without Internet and walkthroughts. Those were the days...
The art style and atmosphere are awesome. Being built in a voxel engine makes it look so out of this world. We need more stuff like this. PS I can't stand when people calls Minecraft a voxel game. It is not, it's a polygonal graphic engine, where polygons are used like if they were voxels, but no voxel in sight.
I remember the bug screen from this game. My parents bought it for me when i was around 10 i could not speak English, did not know what to do, but was somehow fascinated by this game. Even though i barely know how to even getting to the driving mechanic... Thanks for the video!
It's pretty impressive how they baked a claymation aesthetic into voxels. IMO, that by itself is worth the asking price... IDK how or why but the animation sort of reminds me of the original Gumby and claymation kids shows of the era. Edit: what's impressive to me aside from the above is that the devs are still actively updating it. That's awesome! We're talking the studio released the game in 98 and in 2021 they're still doing things for it.
Yep I remember playing the first DF games. Simple yet fun I would describe them. Had quite a mod/map-making community because the maps were literal kbs in size compared to other games at the time. The map files basically just instructions that the engine would generate the map from.
Well I was talking about DF1&2, Land Warrior for me was a bit of a dissapointment :/ and the engine worked fine on my Pentium 2 back then, probably because it was less advanced and used 2D pngs for weapons instead of 3D ones like in the first DF games.
DF2 is one of my favorites. "Quick Missions" in FPS games back in the day was such neat idea of byte sized gaming sessions. One of the most interesting things about it was the limited ammo management, meaning you needed to choose your fights. And yeah, the maps were HUGE! I played Land Warrior, but was still a kid back then, so I didn't got disappointed with stuff all that much.
I agree so much with you on the Quick Missions aspect of DF. There's literally no game these days in the mil-sim genre that just let's you jump-in jump-out of a session these days. Possibly the last game I experienced to be like that was SWAT 4, amazing game even today with the Elite Force mod. Loved seeing the penguins doing slides in the ice maps in Delta Force 2 =)). I understand why you probably enjoyed Land Warrior much more as a kid. Like how I did with Doom 3. As a kid I loved and played Doom 1 & 2 Everyday. So when Doom 3 came out I was in fanboy mode and thought it was the best game ever. Years later I find Doom 1 & 2 to be the most enjoyable arcade shooters ever and Doom 3 to be unbearable to play because there's so much in the way of letting you having fun.
Thanks for the review, Mandalore! The game of lost epoch. Russian game industry was creative and daring back then, in 90s to 00s. Well, the whole gaming industry was a bit up to make it all art, not just to sell lootboxes.
There is a saying in Russian and it really encapsulates the process of understanding wacky games: "Без бутылки не разберешься" - "You can't figure out without a drink". Because mpst of the game really feels like you're stoned af. Gigantic green worms with faces and hands(and little tails) tell you to go between their den-garages and deliver food and shit in which said worms(called elypods) like to swim, whilst there are more than you can think of drunk drivers who take verything as a challenge, then there are the challenges which are races in which you have to deliver some type'o'shit, and it goes on, and on, and on. This mushroom explodes, those bugs can chew through your truck(?), every mechos has his own cryptic description and the whole game has incredibly wacky color scheme. On a side note, all of the worlds in Vangers are _donut-shaped._
It's the most fantastic game I've ever seen. And the graphics--when all the other gamers were playing Doom looking at square pixels, Vangers already had a fully alterable and destructible landscape (many parts of it are written in assembly language, and the original code has been lost over time. Therefore, I am the proud owner of that original version, not the Steam version). It will forever be in my heart.
This looks like a game I would've played a lot as a kid if I had a PC back then. I was into really weird vehicle based action games back then. Wasted so much time on DeathDrome then.
"Hello Russian weird old game I've come to play with you again" Notification softly popping - Mandalore uploaded while I was sleeping And his work now branded in my brain And will remain Within the sound of UwU
completing tabutask is not necessery for achieving counselor's advice about slavery... before you go to Glorx, Lipky tell you 'go to Glorx AND RETURN BACK to me' when he got you key from Portal!
the parts that involve talking to the bug-human hybrids, especially the way speech was represented, gave me serious cruelty squad vibes. the art style is like something between what a child would draw and a fever dream, and its a feeling that seems to crop up every so often yet I have no idea if I should comprehend it
Perimeter was one of the prequel games for this made by that company? cool, I remember buying and playing it, though I was probs too young to figure out proper unit compositions and never really got far, I really dug the idea of morphing your units from type a to type b on the fly for what you need, makes for a pretty interesting concept, no clue how much that holds up still, but I remember it fondly
Review Perimeter! (make sure to also do emperor's testament) If you can make it through Vangers and you have any enjoyment of strategy games you'll love it. I really enjoyed slowly adjusting to its particular brand of insanity.
Well, since we're in *that* (ie good) era of russian game devs, why don't you take a look at Vangers prequel - Perimeter? Or better yet at Space Rangers or Ex Machina?!:D
You should try out Space Rangers. I see the notion that you quite enjoy Eastern European games and this one will surely be a treat for you. I'd recommend starting from the second part, but first is also fine and dandy
Jesus man mandalore content for me it's like a drug, when he uploads i get a hit and a few moments later i'm in need for more. I dont know maybe i'm just crazy.
Fun fact. In original was called Turgor, in biology it means tension inside a cell. Came from turgere (lat.) - to be full of. Low Turgor = fading. If you play the game, that makes so much sense. P.S. Sorry for my English.
If I tried to sum up the story in one sentence, it's... half-human, half-insect remnant creatures surviving in bunkers in a bizarre world while playing cargo cult to human customs and following insect instincts while understanding neither--and they hire you, a disembodied driver in a vehicle, to do stuff for them. Oh, and the money is bugs. I guess that makes it two sentences.
14:05 Anyone who played a certain flash game series from back in the day will know where that song comes from. Mandalore, you didn't happen to play those flash games, did you? ;)
Man I love this game, we got it on sale at a Menards of all places along with another eastern game called Earth 2140 for my father one fathersday. He played Earth 2140 a bit but my sister and I were the ones who fell in love and played the hell out of Vangers. It's just so insanely weird and deep we were obsessed and to this day if I start humming the menu music she'll start singing it at well. lol Btw yeah I was like 10 when I first played this game, I grew up to be a big fan of far out media in general. Maybe I was the right audience though cause I loved 60's music from a very early age as well. lol
I was seriously surprised that this game was related to the Perimeter games. I have been trudging through the first one for the past week now, and the only reason why I bought them was because I own an original copy of Emperor's Testament. The last thing I expected was that that sci-fi RTS would be connected with a Giger inspired racing/driving game. Then again, thinking about it, it kind of makes sense, in a way, given the story of the Perimeter games. Cheers though, for opening my eyes to this game!

Hemang Chauhan ikr
What is it?
You're either too young, or too "clean" to not know it. :^ )
I've played Meet&Fuck. I'm asking for a name. It's a good song.
The song's All The Fire by HiFi
I unironically love slav games, they are uncaring, unfair and undocumented. So you aren't the "chosen one" in them and that makes them more interesting to finally beat them albeit the occasional frustration.
In western videogames you are "The Chosen One" from the start.
In slavic videogames you make yourself a chosen one

I'm always impressed with the amount of detail/depth or view distances voxel based terrain allowed for in older games.
Probably the last game i would expect to see reviewed in 2018, good job!

What's up with the meet&fck music at the end of the video? Lol hahaha I still love that pick. Keep it up man!
We're talking the studio released the game in 98 and in 2021 they're still doing things for it.
hearing that ending music instinctively made me check to see if someone was coming into my room. damn you mandelore
I forgot you were back and my day has been made
Love that you're coming out with more videos after your well-deserved break. Honest you're my favorite TH-camr so keep up the good work!

Listening to this video again in December 2019, it sounds a hell of alot like Death Stranding.... just more interesting.
This is to Death Stranding what Metal Gear is to Metal Gear Solid
Even just watching the video, the visuals, really pull you in and trap you into this world. Very interesting.
I really like the plasticine style it has as well as the customisation options available to you. Looks like a fun game.
When you smuggle heroine. That is, the larva that sings heroic songs.
man that ending song sucker punched me. nice video mandalore.
For more Voxel based games, I suggest
* *Thunder Brigade*
* *Early Delta Force games (esp. DF 1,2, Land Warrior)*
Yep I remember playing the first DF games.
Simple yet fun I would describe them.
Had quite a mod/map-making community because the maps were literal kbs in size compared to other games at the time.
The map files basically just instructions that the engine would generate the map from.
Yeah.
Land Warrior was quite advanced for it's time, and it stomped our then ancient PCs.
Turns out the bugs and humans had a slightly diffrent idea of what a "race war" was
I love the use of the guardsmen and the tyranids for the explanation
That outro music...
MandaLOOOORE! You got some explainin to do!
You absolutely should check out Perimeter. It's an absolute blast, a bit weired but really good!
Really glad you're back always like seeing the game reviews.
Thanks for explaining voxels. Ever since command and conquer I've wondered about those things. This game graphics are astonishing
Thanks for the review, Mandalore! The game of lost epoch. Russian game industry was creative and daring back then, in 90s to 00s. Well, the whole gaming industry was a bit up to make it all art, not just to sell lootboxes.
because back then you could afford to make a fun game with 2 people. Grow up
You sure many of the methods of old can't be re-applied in this day and age?
On a side note, all of the worlds in Vangers are _donut-shaped._
not all. Fostral is, but I'm not sure about others
If you like that, you might want to look into Ice Pick Lodge. They're Russian guys who make artsy games, with Pathologic being the most widely known.
I know it's unlikely but I hope this is the comment that made Mandalore look at Pathologic.
I hope he makes a Tension video!!
14:05 Is that song what i think it is?
Yeah, just the intro ripped (or buyed) from russian pop band Hi-Fi.
yes, it is. It's the classic russian pop song 'Все в огонь' by Hi-Fi. Here ya go: th-cam.com/video/AjfPFKWMxHY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Hi-Fi-Topic
The music at the end sent me back to some old memories, and I know you know what memories

oh my lord, Vigilante's 8 second offense music at 2:38 I hope mandalore will grace us with a review of it soon :D
Been more than 20 years since I saw this on a screen.
Glad I wasn't alone in almost understanding it.
the parts that involve talking to the bug-human hybrids, especially the way speech was represented, gave me serious cruelty squad vibes. the art style is like something between what a child would draw and a fever dream, and its a feeling that seems to crop up every so often yet I have no idea if I should comprehend it
Perimeter was one of the prequel games for this made by that company? cool, I remember buying and playing it, though I was probs too young to figure out proper unit compositions and never really got far, I really dug the idea of morphing your units from type a to type b on the fly for what you need, makes for a pretty interesting concept, no clue how much that holds up still, but I remember it fondly
А мне больше нравиться 2ая часть франшизы Периметр, к сожалению бОльшинство людей не разделяет моих чувств к ней хД
hey mandy the credits music on this video was really chill and cool, almost nostalgic. thanks!
Review Perimeter! (make sure to also do emperor's testament) If you can make it through Vangers and you have any enjoyment of strategy games you'll love it. I really enjoyed slowly adjusting to its particular brand of insanity.
Great to have you back. Love the videos
That Vigilante8 music when talking about the cars... man, so much nostalgia, maybe you could review Vigilante8 1 and 2
Great video as always, I really love your work!
Well, since we're in *that* (ie good) era of russian game devs, why don't you take a look at Vangers prequel - Perimeter? Or better yet at Space Rangers or Ex Machina?!:D
TheArklyte SPACE RANGERS IS THE SHIT
Speaking of old russian games, do you know Parkan? Is it any good?

never played it, however it seems to have had good reception. I was more of an RTS fan when I was a child. Такие дела ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think the sequel had some RTS elements, similar to Battlezone remake or Uprising series.
I second Space Rangers.
Vangers will always be in my heart.
You should try out Space Rangers. I see the notion that you quite enjoy Eastern European games and this one will surely be a treat for you. I'd recommend starting from the second part, but first is also fine and dandy
Yeah, just do whatever the latest HD release it, it'll have all the stuff from the first one anyway.
finally sat down to watch this one. you did such a great job. A+ content.
Russians make the best surrealist videogames, all that vodka and radiation.
For some surrealist game you may try Mor:Utopia (Мор:Утопия)
Or Tension (Turgor)
Yes, and Turgor sometimes go into NSFW area.

MANDALORE I LOVE YOU
Mandalore keeping up with the quality reviews!
DO "THE VOID" (tension in the russian version). It's one of my favs and it's amazing and interesting. Perfect fit for this channel imo.
Fun fact. In original was called Turgor, in biology it means tension inside a cell. Came from turgere (lat.) - to be full of. Low Turgor = fading. If you play the game, that makes so much sense.
P.S. Sorry for my English.
ahh, the boob lady tree waifu game. a fever dream of an experience to rival Vengers.
that fucking end credit music god damn it mandalore
If I tried to sum up the story in one sentence, it's... half-human, half-insect remnant creatures surviving in bunkers in a bizarre world while playing cargo cult to human customs and following insect instincts while understanding neither--and they hire you, a disembodied driver in a vehicle, to do stuff for them. Oh, and the money is bugs. I guess that makes it two sentences.
Aw man! You used a track from Jazz Jackrabbit 2 in the middle of the video, that made me glad for some reason.

Anyone who played a certain flash game series from back in the day will know where that song comes from.
Mandalore, you didn't happen to play those flash games, did you? ;)
Meet and fuck, nice times.

Blahblah The game is meet&fuck.
That is slightly more helpful, but there's 90 M&F games.
Lovely review as always. Amazing artstyle in this game! :)
