A lot of people will just fake it and say “oh yeah it cured for the 24 hours” and do the test the same day a couple hours later. Thank you for the great content man! I've never had much luck with any product like this - even ceramic infused ones. It seems that as soon as the surface tension gets broken it's game over and the water just soaks in.
Apart from water it would be interesting to test the resistance to stains.

That CERATEX looked pretty good. I have used Gtechniq Smartfabric with the bio-kleen additive and it works great but has a VERY strong chemical smell to it and you have to vent it. It's by far the best performer but again, it's pretty expensive, but you do get what you paid for, it works. I don't think any fabric protector totally blocks liquid, but they are primarily designed to hold the liquid on top for a short period and you are supposed to wick up the liquid as soon as possible. In that context, these do work better than having nothing on your fabrics. Even the cheaper ones, used more heavily and add several more coats than what it says, using a brush or your hand with a latex glove on and work the product into the fibers well. That helps the products to work tremendously. I have done it both ways, with many different fabric protectors, and I have had luck with the 3M fabric guard product worked into the fibers with my glove covered hand, three coats, reapplied after each coat dried fully. I work the product in one way first, then respray and work it into the opposite direction and so on all four directions to ensure even and complete covered. I think these products do have value, even if they don't totally block the stain. They help for sure. CarPro Fabric Coat 2.0 is sort of like Gtechniq in my opinion but an economical one that works at a high level also is that 3M Fabric Guard which can be used interior or exterior on fabric tops for good repellancy. I have also had good luck for years before all these new fandangled products came out with Scotch Guard in the spray can. I used that stuff for the past 30+ years on all my vehicle fabrics and it actually worked quite well. And it's available at almost any local retailer and/or supermarket for a good price. The Scotch Guard being the cheapest is the most economical way to do it, BY FAR. You can get four cans of that stuff for the price of some of the others and have a lot more product to work with allowing you to do multiple coats ensuring a better end result! Nice review and test Josh!

Hi Josh. I have started my own mobile detailing business. I cleaned my personal car yesterday, 2011 Subaru Outback with cloth seats, to test chemical guys fabric cleaner. It worked great on the seats and I used my shop vac to suck out any soap/dirt.The seats mostly had a few stains, that's it. The windows where up on the car last night because of rain and I could not keep it in the garage, do to no room. The car has a musky odor now, even after having doors open all day in sunshine. I smelled the seats and they smell clean and are dry. I hope you can help. Thank you Kurt

I bought the Ryobi $99 one I believe. I can further explain things I why you would want to modify the machine. In my situation I wanted to increase the water flow as it is okay. Two things when buying a pressure washer is GPM and the pressure. If your doing small work around the house or detailing you can get away with a n electric pressure washer. If you are doing pressure washing like for properties or more power I would choose a gas pressure washer. I can further explain or recommend some machines if you’re interested.

I love your videos and have bought items you liked, but testing porosity of a carpet doesn't have much value. Try using a white carpet and test how clean you can get them after getting them dirty. The only way to get some water proofing is to somehow create a film. Not a good idea for a carpet IMO.

It seems the ones that work the best aren't really practical in the detailing world. Nobody is going to not use their car for 48 hours or be ok with a potent smell. Scotch guard seems to be the most practical for daily drivers. Smart Fabric would be the best for show vehicles or high dollar vehicles that likely would have spills in them anyways.

The most pointless test I’ve ever seen. Trying to protect fabric not fill a swimming pool. Did the fabric protection prevent staining of the fabric surfaces? Impossible to tell, particularly since no staining agent was applied and it would be hard to tell with black fabric. Sorry if my comment is a bit harsh but maybe the title could be changed to water repellency test and another video is available that covers stain protection. I have fabrics with open holes that I am trying to protect and looking for stain protection, not water repellency.

  • @EilandMeisje85

Since some of the products does not require a second coat and you used a second coat, that could be the reason for fabric stiffness. Just saying. Also did you use the same blue towel to wipe up water from each sample? If you did the stickiness could be due to the multiple uses of removing water and some of the protectants from each sample, so when you got to the end it was reacting to the other products. Overall this was a great video. Thanks.

I used a different towel for wash section. Yes the multiple coats could potentially be the cause of the stiffness. That’s a good point

Yea definitely. It will break down faster from the constant compression of the padding and flex of the fibers, but it should still work well. Just always do a small test spot first to make sure there are no issues for color

This would’ve been a fantastic video if you would have used light colored carpet and coffee or some kind of dark drink it kind of defeated the entire purpose of the video.

I can attest the Chemical Guys hydro slick fabric is complete garbage to the point where I feel scammed

Did you even read the instructions on any of them. I watched a chemical guys video on them and you're suppose to mist the fabric and reapply after 30 minutes NOT drench it in the first application.
