    Spot on! I'm a mobile technician in the South and I drive a lot, so I've real-world tested just about every hydrophobic product out there. My personal regimen is Aquapel every 6 months, and keep a bottle of RainX in the back seat.
    The only issue I have with Aquapel is that if you use your windshield wipers (bugs, excessively heavy rain that overwhelms the product), it actually scratches the Aquapel layer, installing fine linear scratches in the path of the wiper blades over time, which can lead to borderline crippling hazing and glare in some rain conditions. Because Aquapel is a silica-based product that chemically crosslinks to the glass, it has to be mechanically removed before recoating. Meguiar's Ultimate Polish and a DA polisher works well for me.
    In contrast, RainX is a silicone solution emulsified into a wax with an alcohol-based emulsifier. It simply sits on the surface of the glass, and is highly susceptible to heat and mechanical removal (windshield wipers). But it's also dirt cheap and available almost anywhere in North America, and very easy to apply.
    Sorry for the text wall! I wanted to add some real-world insight that doesn't translate well into laboratory testing. :)

      @@davidr.8999 NuFinish does alright, but nothing remarkable. If you use it, give it at least two days in the garage to cure before taking it out in the sun or letting it get wet, and reapply in about a month for best effect. RainX does not play nicely overtop of it, however. It hazed like crazy for me when I tried this combination. I suspect that the alcohol content in RainX interacts with the petroleum-based solvent in NuFinish, but this is only speculation. I've only ever tried the liquid NuFinish product in the upright bottle, not the paste in the tin. I suspect they're more or less the same thing, just different application methods to suit different target demographics.

    • @JSFGuy
      @JSFGuy 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      Headlight restore kits are kind of like box dinners or ready-made, you can do it that way and sometimes it works, or you can go back get the spin polish with the plastic polish and do it through analog ways and means. I use a buffer and polish them clear before they get too bad. There is always replacement lamps that are generally affordable and worth it because they are a safety item. Also if you don't have to remove the bumper and the whole front end of the car just to replace the lamps. Results vary.

    Another fantastic comparison. Been using Rain-X religiously since the 1980s. First thing i do when I buy a new car is apply it, and reapply maybe once a year. One time I forgot to on a new Explorer. Got caught in a heavy rainstorm on a roadtrip and couldn't see a thing. Had to stop at a Walmart to pick some up. Applied it under cover at the nearest gas station and all was well. You don't even have to use the wipers most of the time - the water just beads up and rolls or flies off. The original and still one of the best. Can't beat it for the price.

    Nice job! I've been a user of Rain-X since around '85. I have found the best application technique for great long lasting results is slightly different that the one you did. 1st, I clean the glass much like you did. Then I apply product directly to the glass using a mixture of swirls, back and forth and up and down strokes. I proceed all the way around the car, so by the time I get back to where I started, that 1st piece is thoroughly dry. Then I apply a 2nd coat the exact same way. Next I spray a very scant amount of fine mist water to the glass and rub firmly with a dry towel. Lastly I polish the dry glass with a dry microfiber cloth until it's extremely slippery. DONE! Lasts easily 6 months, but you can get more like a year out of it if you also use the Rain-X windshield washer in the car.
    Thanks Todd, looking forward to your next report.

      I recently resealed my windows and tried something new. At the beginning of the video you can see the product "SOFT99 Glaco Glass Compound Roll On" which is a kind of simple glass polish, I cleaned the glass and then used SOFT99 to really remove all the impurities, then cleaned it again and then applied the Rain Repellent. In any case, I'm curious to see whether this method turns out to be better. So far I've driven once in light rain and the result was very good, the windows started to get clean over 60km/h.
      Info on the side: I used something other than Rain-X, it's from LICARGO, it got good reviews in many tests and I wanted to try it out myself, I think it's only available in Germany, and of course I bought it a few days before this video came out, i also have RainX at home, which I'm happy with :)

    1. Clean the window with a wet synthetic chamois, and dry it with a microfibre towel.
    2. Use RainX window cleaner to clean the window again (spray on the window and wipe clean with a microfibre towel).
    3. apply RainX repellant with a microfibre towel.
    4. buff the repellant off with a dry microfibre towel
    5. repeat steps 3 and 4 (second coat).
    6. top up your windscreen fluid with the RainX fluid (following the diluting instructions on the bottle).

    RainX is great in the winter too. I came out of work after freezing rain and there was a bunch of tiny frozen dots on my windshield I could see through while everyone else had to remove 1/8inch of solid ice.

      What i like about rain-x in the winter in Minnesota is it makes it much easier to remove snow and ice from the windows.

      For the price and finding at gas stations n such n a pinch, and for always bailing me and others out even in heavy downpours across this country side rain x will always have their loyalist like me when in that pinch on the road and the windshield wipers are of no help or not working at all we're reaching for it

    I've been using Aquapel for years. Aside from it being a bit of a pain to apply and get the windshield clear, it works great. It lasts 3-6 months depending on the conditions it faces and I don't have to use windshield wipers in the rain. I actually haven't turned on windshield wipers in years.

      I usually get 6mo of great functionality of it with aquapel in WI, and then an additional 6mo of alright performance, and then every year after that it's still better than having never applied it but definitely diminished.

      I used Aquapel several years ago, but could never get rid of a slight haze that it left on the windshield. Did a great job when it rained, though.

    • @colinstu
      @colinstu 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@williamschroeder3070 there is zero haze if it's fully buffed off in time. It really doesn't need to sit on glass long at all, and if the windshield was warm or hot already it really decreases working time / makes it harder to buff off.

My imagination is just not that fecund, I guess, so I rely on others. And the only thing more impressive than his tests is the fact that he replies to everyone.

    Most of us don’t have the time or the money to test these products. Thanks for another great, comprehensive test. What many people forget is that wiper blades get loose at the pivot point on the cowl, and fail to operate when you really need them to. Second is that the edge of most wiper blades will eventually separate from the body of the blade, which can lead to trenches being scratched in the windshield by the metal rubber blade holders. I learned this the hard way decades ago.
    It is really helpful to keep the chemical of your choice in the glove box or console of your vehicle, along with the scrubbing-type towels you will need to clean the windshield and then dry ones to dry it off. I haven’t tried all of these, but Rain-X has been my choice for years; however, I would use any of the ones he tested if I had windshield wiper failure of any kind. The use of a clay bar compound, as he suggested in the beginning, will give the cleanest glass and the longest lasting results.
    This man is a national treasure, and millions of us rely on him to test the products we use every day. Thanks for the testing you do, and try to make it easier for us to purchase your brand of coffee.

    For visualizing the best-bang-for-buck final results, I would suggest a bar plot of value determined by avg finish (F) and cost (C): C - (C/F). This formula would reflect how closely the performance matched the cost of product. The lower the output, the better the value. For example, Gtechniq would output 5.08 while Rain-X would output 3.75. Great work as always, Sir.

    Quality review and fair testing as usual. I personally use rain-x for my car and the plastic safe version for my helmet visor. Been using them for years and definitely happy with the water repellent quality, application ease and life span. I've even managed to get my dad on board when I was washing my car with the jet wash and he asked what was happening on my windows. I claybarred he's windscreen as it was grim and used rain-x. He now uses rain-x
