Spot on! I'm a mobile technician in the South and I drive a lot, so I've real-world tested just about every hydrophobic product out there. My personal regimen is Aquapel every 6 months, and keep a bottle of RainX in the back seat.
The only issue I have with Aquapel is that if you use your windshield wipers (bugs, excessively heavy rain that overwhelms the product), it actually scratches the Aquapel layer, installing fine linear scratches in the path of the wiper blades over time, which can lead to borderline crippling hazing and glare in some rain conditions. Because Aquapel is a silica-based product that chemically crosslinks to the glass, it has to be mechanically removed before recoating. Meguiar's Ultimate Polish and a DA polisher works well for me.
In contrast, RainX is a silicone solution emulsified into a wax with an alcohol-based emulsifier. It simply sits on the surface of the glass, and is highly susceptible to heat and mechanical removal (windshield wipers). But it's also dirt cheap and available almost anywhere in North America, and very easy to apply.
Sorry for the text wall! I wanted to add some real-world insight that doesn't translate well into laboratory testing. :)

@@davidr.8999 NuFinish does alright, but nothing remarkable. If you use it, give it at least two days in the garage to cure before taking it out in the sun or letting it get wet, and reapply in about a month for best effect. RainX does not play nicely overtop of it, however. It hazed like crazy for me when I tried this combination. I suspect that the alcohol content in RainX interacts with the petroleum-based solvent in NuFinish, but this is only speculation. I've only ever tried the liquid NuFinish product in the upright bottle, not the paste in the tin. I suspect they're more or less the same thing, just different application methods to suit different target demographics.

Headlight restore kits are kind of like box dinners or ready-made, you can do it that way and sometimes it works, or you can go back get the spin polish with the plastic polish and do it through analog ways and means. I use a buffer and polish them clear before they get too bad. There is always replacement lamps that are generally affordable and worth it because they are a safety item. Also if you don't have to remove the bumper and the whole front end of the car just to replace the lamps. Results vary.

I've been using Rain-X for over 2 decades now. When I lived in Florida the micro-downpours could rob any visibility on a highway at highway speed and at that speed the Rain-X would clear it before I could get to my windshield wiper controls. When they came out with their washer fluid, I started using that to keep the treatment fresh. Now that I'm living in the Pacific North West this treatment is critical. Not only does it help with the constant rain, but when we get an overnight freeze just one hit to the glass causes the ice sheet to crack and easily slide off the windshield, although for a light frost it's a little harder because of all the tiny ice bubbles.
This video was great because now I know there are options which last longer - Rain-X tends to wear out before the rainy season is over.
A tip (and maybe a presentation) is treating wiper blades. When I wash my windshield, I clean & treat my wiper blades with Armor All. There are a couple other rubber treatments out there but the combination of Rain-X and Armor All makes clearing a windshield in even the hardest rains easy.

One time I forgot to on a new Explorer. Got caught in a heavy rainstorm on a roadtrip and couldn't see a thing. Had to stop at a Walmart to pick some up. Applied it under cover at the nearest gas station and all was well. You don't even have to use the wipers most of the time - the water just beads up and rolls or flies off. I used RainX for many years. I also used it on my work van. I noticed that the wiper blades began to deteriorate. I put in a request for my boss to get replacements, and she did. I washed the windshield, re-applied the RainX and put on the new blades. Within a month the blades were leaving arcs of untouched glass and becoming useless. I had the blades replaced again, I did a wash of the van and a deep cleaning of all the glass. But I forgot to re apply the RainX. The wipers were still good a year later. On a random whim, I bought RainX and applied it. The wipers failed within a month.
I think the RainX is deteriorating the wiper blades. Granted, after first applying RainX, you don't need wipers in heavy rain as long as you're over 30 to 40 Mph. But in misty/sprinkles and city traffic. The water beads up into a hazy film that must be wiped off. With bad wipers, that gets streaky. Anyone else noticing that wiper blades deteriorate quickly when water repellents are used?
Idea for video: Testing various brands of wiper blades. Single vs dual blades. Beam vs pivoting frames.

I'm also using RainX wipers so it's no surprise they are holding up well. That's really bad if the product is degrading other wipers. It would be interesting to know if the others do as well but that kind of long term real world test would be so hard to do.

Nice job! I've been a user of Rain-X since around '85. I have found the best application technique for great long lasting results is slightly different that the one you did. 1st, I clean the glass much like you did. Then I apply product directly to the glass using a mixture of swirls, back and forth and up and down strokes. I proceed all the way around the car, so by the time I get back to where I started, that 1st piece is thoroughly dry. Then I apply a 2nd coat the exact same way. Next I spray a very scant amount of fine mist water to the glass and rub firmly with a dry towel. Lastly I polish the dry glass with a dry microfiber cloth until it's extremely slippery. DONE! Lasts easily 6 months, but you can get more like a year out of it if you also use the Rain-X windshield washer in the car.
Thanks Todd, looking forward to your next report.

I recently resealed my windows and tried something new. At the beginning of the video you can see the product "SOFT99 Glaco Glass Compound Roll On" which is a kind of simple glass polish, I cleaned the glass and then used SOFT99 to really remove all the impurities, then cleaned it again and then applied the Rain Repellent. In any case, I'm curious to see whether this method turns out to be better. So far I've driven once in light rain and the result was very good, the windows started to get clean over 60km/h.
Info on the side: I used something other than Rain-X, it's from LICARGO, it got good reviews in many tests and I wanted to try it out myself, I think it's only available in Germany, and of course I bought it a few days before this video came out, i also have RainX at home, which I'm happy with :)

Started using Rain-X 30+ years ago when I started driving, always loved being able to go drive at speed in a good rainstorm and not need wipers. These days I still do Rain-X, but without the manual application. Rain-X washer fluid and Rain-X wipers, great combination that keeps the repellency going. If it seems to wear off a bit, give the glass a super good cleaning, then use sprayer and wipers for ~10 second several times. All done.

For future tests of these products ... My biggest problem with using Rain-X (haven't used any of the others) has been that it produces a haze behind the wipers when I'm dealing with anything less than a significant rain. It takes a second or two for the haze to clear, just in time for the next swipe of the wiper. The irony, of course, is that it ends up negatively impacting visibility when dealing with a light rain. I've experienced the same effect on a few different cars and light trucks; so I've sworn off using it. If anyone can come up with a good test for that problem, I'm sure the team at Project Farm can! My personal experience, aside from ceramic coating, Soft 99 Ultra Glaco. Gyeon ( Gee-on ) is good too.

I have exactly that, Ultra Glaco waiting to be applied. I hope it's good :)

@@DzeiEidz it's worked pretty good for me so far. One application usually works good, but sometimes I've had to use two applications depending on the windshield.

17:54 This winter was cold enough that it made my trucks leather "brittle". Leaning on the armrest, I heard a snap. My sharp elbow put a crack in the leather. Could you help me make an informed decision? Is JB Liquid leather the way to go?

I’ve used Rain-X probably since it first appeared. Nice to see it the most cost effective.

Yes finally you done it! Rain repellent changed my life lol. My experience is if you drive 40 mph or less, more often there is a need to apply the repellent. However if you do motorway miles its a must have, Trucks, Buses its a must have
