Everquest Lore: The Hole (Old Paineel)

- Hello my fellow Norrathians! This is a story I've been wanting to tell for a long time. While anyone can just jump down there now, once upon a time, you either needed to get in good with the Heretic faction to buy a key to get into Old Paineel, or know someone that had the shrink and water breathing spell so you could squeeze through the rocks of the underwater door. While it proves to be an infuriating maze of mobs that will be all too happy to kill you, there is a haunting beauty to this city turned graveyard. The Hole is a testament to what happens when great minds don't think alike. I think I'll keep adding my lore sources and any inconsistences I find at the end of each video so ya'll know where I'm getting it from.

As a lvl 15 pally I once fell into the hole. I thought my corpse was lost permanently, and almost quit the game. Lucky for me a level 60 (max lvl at the time) necro traveled across the world to help me out. Not only did they summon my corpse, but also gave me a sarnak battle shield and a sword of the morning. A great EQ memory. Love your videos btw!

I traveled my Dwarf all the way to the Commonlands, level 5. I died after that incredible solo journey on my first day. I came back again. I asked for help and a necromancer told me she would find my corpse. I looted it, logged off and never went back. I was from then on a Dark Elf Necromancer.
The day The Hole was released it was a total surprise to me. I came home from school and saw the game patching. I was super excited, and got my levitate and I flew down into the Hole completely oblivious to the fact that I would lose my levitate upon entering the zone and fall to my death. So what did I do? I tricked all of my friends into meeting a similar fate so they would be forced to help me get my corpse. They were pretty mad.

I think the real question is: Why the hell does Brell Serillis have a huge horde in his domain ready to invade Norrath at any moment? You just can't trust a god who wears a lit candelabra on his head all the time. That screams "I have more than a few screws loose". A barrier of living stone to protect his kingdom? More like a barrier to keep the bloodthirsty maniac and his even more unhinged creations contained.
He lives underground, what creature on any planet is sane that lives underground?
Great observation! Brell's certainly a curious god, and something of a dead beat dad to the way too many races he's created.
Hello my fellow Norrathians, I hope y'all are having a good whatever your celebrating! I've officially moved and am working on finishing the video I had planned for October. I wasn't planning on going this long without a video but it allowed me to take a breather and sort out some things. Look forward to getting a lovely tale on the Drachnid within the next month!
It's fall yall! Just wanted to give an update, I'm moving this month but I will try to get a short October video out. After October I anticipate going back to my regular upload schedule and maybe even a little faster since I'll have a better area to record in. To make it up for the wait, after the next video I'll start working on a story about that tart Firiona Vie.

The Hole was one of those mythical zones of legend back in the day I never got to see until playing two decades later on P99, pretty cool spot and definitely evokes the EQ nostalgia of fear of dying the way people keep their cleric druid and wizzy alts camped out at the docks group because people are always stuck down there needing ports to get out

I once got a player suspended in the hole. It was on cornaiv TLP. 6 mage boxer who was trying to take every single camp he could, his plan was to train the camps until people left but i took ample screenshots of all the tells he sent me and everytime he trainrd my group. Daybreak came through with a response email telling me he was suspended it was an awesome memory

All the professional drawings in this video are from the EQ RPG books, the EQ comic books and the gnome at the end is from the EQ card game. All the scribbles are from me :P

I was always wondering what that kind of zone is. Back in my days we had make a raid with a partner-guild and I remember we struggle at the entrance 'cause nobody had the key to open this rock thingy. (It was the time where already Planes of Power was out.) But you was able to glitch through it. I had to check out where to buy that key.. and I stopped playing already years ago.. uh however really great designed zone and even now with the lore: wow! I did not expect that people make so much effort. Oh.. and I remember I had to go down for a part of my enchanter epic. Ah.. good old times.
