Dang. Now I know why my girlfriend enjoyed CoM so much. She actually paid attention to all the lore. I didn't even realize the "ghosts" were lizards. Miss ya, Ruthie. lol
No kidding! They went from being slaves, to uniting into a massive empire that could threaten dragons and create new life forms, to falling into ruin all in a little over 1000 years. They certainly don't wait around for history to happen, they make it happen.
Crazy I'm watching this 4 years after comments. I played EQ back in 2000. Seeing this takes me back to 14 years old. Iksar Necro was the 2nd class I made after Wood Elf Druid. Their city and lore fascinated me. As soon as Luclin released with the new race models it just made me love them more.
I remember this whole story from the Shaman Spear of Fate epic quest! I like this sort of... class-agnostic approach you've taken to telling the story of the City of Mist. You outlined the final third of the epic quest in order without once mentioning it was from a single class quest, and I kind of like that. One thing I'll add that wasn't mentioned was the "mantle" over Torsis, the void of spiritual energy that has been draining the spirits around the city like a black hole. The spirits conclude that it's not due to Rak's behaviour that caused the mantle to form over Torsis, but rather from thousands of Iksar who turned away from Cazic *as a result* of Rak pointing them down that path of indifference to their god. Even with Rak's repentance at the hands of the Shaman who slays him, it's not enough to save Torsis. The city is damned, forever shrouded by the mantle of negative spiritual energy caused not by a single, powerful will like how Miragul created one in Everfrost, but rather by the collective will of the people who fell away from their god and cast aside their spirituality. Thank you for creating this video. It brought back lots of memories of trying so hard to get that spear while not even being in a raiding guild. Though, that said, if I never get Death Touched by one of Cazic's golems again, it'll be too soon. ;) p.s., I love your doodles in the video that poke fun at the subtext of whatever it is you're saying at the time.
So this script actually had to go through several rewrites because I originally did approach it from the shaman point of view. When I wrote it from that perspective it ended up more focused on what the city is now as opposed to how it got there, who steered it that way and why. It is odd having to take the history from the Spear of Fate epic weapon quest without addressing the True Spirit's concern about the mantel (the whole reason you're trying to put Rak's spirit to rest in the first place and go into his history to do so) but I couldn't find a way to explain it without muddying the waters. I tried to indicate that there is a spiritual withering going on and that the city can't be redeemed without going into a full shammy explanation that would pull focus off of Rak, hopefully it comes across in the video. I suspect that even if the mantel wasn't in place there is no way Cazic would lift the mist and offer the spirits there redemption, just another one of those places that is forever tainted by his touch. I cannot tell you how many times I died in the Plane of Fear for this video! It absolutely lives up to its reputation, and your chosen deity help you with that darn near zone wide aggro radius. I first met Dread when he got chain pulled by trash mobs over to me and I was suddenly dead! Until I need to do the story about the dracholich there or Cazic himself I'm going to steer clear. I sincerely wish anyone going after their shammy epic on a classic server the best of luck! Thank you :D I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Really just goes to show you how much care was taken to develop the lore of EQ. So much lore that most of us don't even know about it, but it was still lovingly crafted. I feel like you just don't get this depth of story and lore in current MMOs.
I've always wanted to get into Everquest lore, since it's one of the oldest MMOs still going and I'm so curious how it has developed, and what the old stories were. Your channel is exactly what I'm after- despite having never played EQ myself, I can follow the lore! Wonderful stuff!
Excellent video. City of Mist will always hold a spot in my memory for EQ. Decades ago back in EQ's heyday & when I was playing my first visit to CoM was during a mini-raid. I forget which npc, maybe the Black Reaver, but when my screen went total black I had thought my computer monitor had gone kaput lol. No one had forewarned me about that possibility. Afterwards very amusing but at the time very distraught. I tried playing EQ again in 2019, but it just couldn't hold my attention. I think it would with a better companion system.
I was just in City of Mist the other day, one of my favorite zones. Never knew anything about its lore and now I like even more. People say Dark Souls lore is elusive, with how many years Ive played EQ almost on the daily back when, I know Dark Souls lore more. We get so caught up in the grind that we don't hail npcs and end up missing gems of lore. Gonna hail one new npc a day, well one that will give a piece of story.
This was great! So much I never knew about what went down in Torsis. The art is adorable too. I love the merchant with the raptor moving the cart the most
The jokes you sneak in are my favorite part lmao. "Just my shovel and my hoe, my dirty dirty hoe." nearly died laughing at that haha! Might have even ended up haunting the city with them!
I love finding these Everquest p99 channels, it's like watching Portal over again in the mid 2000s. Wish more people covered Anarchy online or Dark age of camelot. Shame about Asherons call.
Thank you, alot of really great mmo's shut down and have been lost to time unfortunately. I'm glad Camelot is still around though, I never played but seems pretty interesting.
@@jakeen229 Cool, I'll have to check it out. I've actually never gotten onto P99, I'm lurking on the live servers, but to go over the lore for some zones that have been changed I'll probably need to figure out how to hop on.
@@lorewhoregalore1393 It's super easy, let me know if you need help, actually, you need a copy of EQ titanium. I can send them to you instead of paying 100 bucks on amazon lol My girlfriend doesn't game but we play EQ together from time to time. Just let me know.
Oh wow, as long as I I've been playing, I didn't know everything that happened before the Mist. That said, I really only ever came here for Jade Reavers. 🤔 Thanks for these videos. You've touched on some things in your videos that I didn't know about even though I've been playing since right after the Luclin launch. Also, your voice is hot. 😍
LOL I forgot about the cactus enemies. That was a lot to take in about the city of mists. Its a shame I didn't really get to do more of it when I was playing EQ, I never really started to level up in that game till around Velious came out. I had character ADHD and kept making new characters getting them up to 20s and swapping to another one. Great video, what are you using to play EQ as like a GM / Dev? Genuinely curious as I'd like to go back to the old EQ up to like luclin / planes era and take a look around at level design. There was one place in Freeport sewers that I always wanted to take a peek at but couldn't reach as a player that makes me wonder if anything was up there to this day.
Gotta admit the cactus guys are one of my favorite monsters in Norrath, maybe its their stoic gaze or their weird little feet but darn if I don't love em. I didn't got to COM much in my younger days because the Emerald Jungle terrified my little druid, I actually didn't know about any of its history until I randomly started reading about the shaman epic weapon quest. I play on a live server as a player, and yes I died many, many, times getting the Plane of Fear footage. I don't play to level up anymore, I really just explore the old zones. The biggest problem I have is that some of the zones were redone (the Desert of Ro, Misty Thicket, Freeport) and I will probably have to figure out how to get on Project 1999 and level up there if I want to do videos on those zones, it just wouldn't feel right using the newer ones. I was more of a Qeynos sewers gal myself, but I bet Freeport is hiding some stuff down there too!
So in reference the mysterious place in freeport, I always wanted to see and even tried levitate my way up there. Was a high up hole with a eerie green glow coming from it. The first day I played EQ I found it and I went and bought a cloth cord rope because I thought I could climb up with it. Boy did I feel silly when I found out that was a belt. (Was hoping you were running your own personal server to sneak around and do what not. I know some people definitely have that going.) I think it was in North Freeport next to the entrance to the paladin's temple one of the side areas. I as a kid was convinced that had to be a secret path to like a GM island. As far as Project 99 goes its pretty easy to get into when I played it many years ago as a bard ironically named Cunning Linguist. The new Freeport area on live servers always bugs me as they changed it so drastically from the OG.
@@NahThanksImGood I didn't get a chance to run around in them alot before the 'upgrade', sounds like you found an interesting mystery! Fantastic assembly and narration of this lore! If I am not mistaken, the majority of this lore (if not all) is revealed during the Shaman epic quest? I've never done the Shaman, but I have helped with several, and I recognized some encounters for it in the presentation.
