Great tips! I did not do my research before adopting 3 females & it was a big learning curve. Did not realize females lay eggs even without a mate & need a place to dig & lay them.
I have two Red Eared Sliders. They are actually siblings. Their mother made her nest in my yard two years ago. I decided to keep just one. However, a few days later I noticed one still near the nest. I thought it had died but when I touched it, it moved, so I decided to bring it inside. One doesn't really care to be held and the other one is fine with me holding it. It's funny how they recognize me and will swim over when I enter the room. When they were babies, I had their tank in a room where there wasn't much foot traffic. I noticed they would hide when I entered the room. I decided to move their tank into my office, so they would get used to seeing me all day. Now, they don't run when I enter the room. I love just them!
I found 1 by the road side opposite my house like 2 years ago.. he was so small when he came n now he's grown really big like the size of a big palm.. he responds to me when I call him n i know it's a male after googling up abt it.. such a calm n cute fella.. i feel super lucky after i found him n he's been my happiness always.. 😍😍😍😍😍😍
The turtle needs a giant pondliner and sunshine. Dig and install a wire enclosure undergound. That then goes over head. And over a deep pond liner. Also in winter they need indoor space too
Thank you. Great info and I’m glad I actually live with the person that brought the healthy red eared slider into our home. But I’m enjoying learning more.
I’m so glad i found this video. My mom has two RES, both of them are rescued from bad situations. One of them, roma, is probably about 20years old, but we arent sure about the other one, Largo. I found this video because i was looking into RES behaviors, as largo has attacked roma multiple times over the past month. We’re probably going to re-home largo, but we’re really upset about it.
I’m sorry to hear that! Unfortunately it is common for RES to be territorial/aggressive to one another. That was really nice of your mother to take them in.
Great info, we got a rescue female. Pretty sure adult given her size. Settled in quickly and comes right over. We were debating on big fish with her later, but seeing this, she will keep her big tank for herself 👍
@turtleholic We have seen videos where bigger once have worked. But after seeing your experience will not take chances. She is fun, as she comes right over and she seems okay with my husband holding her. It is never forced and wasn't expected. But was neglected lots before, bad water, no lights or basking area. So a bit of recovery, but going well now. They said yellow belly slider, but obviously a fully grown female red ear slider.
Hello 👋 This video is very HELPFUL. I still have my beautiful Red Eared Slider. I've had her for 4 Years. I take care of her everyday. I LOVE ❤️ your video. I LOVE my turtle her name is Doreen. I gave her my middle. Doreen is big.
Are you planning on getting more turtles , I think common musk turtles, spotted turtles and wood turtles are the best pet turtles to have, because they stay small and easy to take care of?
what size tank do you have for your turtle? i was going to get a 50 gallon tank for mine but then hearing what you said made me think that wouldn’t be the best choice
I’ve been having my red ear for 8 months now. He may have been maybe a month or two. His shell was still somewhat soft. It’s been 8 months now and he’s still seems really small. I have a 5 gallon tank. Is that to small for him
Yes, you will want to get him at least a 20 gallon tank, and preferably a 40 gallon tank. It can lead to health problems if your turtle is kept in a tank that is too small.
How do you clean the sand? I love the idea but rocks seem easier to clean. 🤷🏻♀️ I probably just need your filter. Filter recommendations appreciated. 0:39
I think both sand and rocks get equally dirty, but rocks look a lot better aesthetically because the waste isn't as noticeable. I don't really clean my sand that often, I usually just rely on my filter. However, my filter usually gets pretty dirty every 2 weeks or so, and when that happens I have to clean the sponges or else waste will start building up on the sand. This is the filter that I use: amzn.to/3ZDOrDL
No wonder it dont like being picked up. You need to pick it up from both sides. By pushing on its top shell and bottom it is not evenly distributed weight. Try being more gentle on both sides
I got the exact same turtle since I was 5 and she got really big. There's so much so that we have to change the tank 2 tomes and we're even thinking about changing the tank again. To be honest I'm only just now barely doing research aboutt taking care of her and I realized I've been neglecting her really badly. I feel so bad now. I don't fully neglect her. I change the water and during the summer. We let her out into a little kid's pool. But she outgrew it and now she get, so we don't do that anymore. Do you have any other advice? I should consider?
i got a small heater , but its not heating the water . my turtle is also sleeping a lot , she moves into the water whenever i come when she is basking .
If your heater isn't working, you should try this one (amzn.to/3WE4EYG). It also comes with a thermometer so you can monitor the temperature of the water.
I love my turtles 3 year old me named them stupid turtle (he kept swimming at the glass) and Alfred I’m 24 now and there still healthy btw a good rule is 10 gallons per inch of shell
Thank you. This was helpful. What aquatic turtle species would you suggest if I want to add fish and can be maintained in an adult in a 75-gallon tank? @turtleholic
That’s a great question! I think a good option would be a spotted turtle. They don’t grow past 5 inches, and they are not as good at hunting fish compared to sliders, painted turtles, and other aquatic species.
Omg yes to the always biting things!! I thought my little guy was just destructive 😂
They think everything is good! Haha
Great tips! I did not do my research before adopting 3 females & it was a big learning curve. Did not realize females lay eggs even without a mate & need a place to dig & lay them.
Oh wow, did you know they were pregnant or did you only find out when they laid the eggs?
They don’t need a mate to lay eggs ?
😮😮😮😮
Were any of them real though?
@@broden5546 they’re not fertile eggs without a mate, just normal eggs like what you would expect from a chicken, yellow yolk & white soft shell.
Just got my first slider. Very informative video. Thanks!
Congrats and best of luck! They are a fun species.

I have two babies on a whim. For my kid. I will be looking at more of your videos.
Thanks for the tips. I don't even know if I have girls or boys.
Thanks

so nice of you to rescue her! and yeah, fish can really be hit or miss.

How can I get my red-cheeked turtle accustomed to other foods (vegetable)?
I have a boy turtle and he’s pretty chill. I’m just lucky I guess.
Are you planning on getting more turtles , I think common musk turtles, spotted turtles and wood turtles are the best pet turtles to have, because they stay small and easy to take care of?
Yes I would like to get a second turtle. I’m thinking maybe musk turtle, or a male painted turtle
@@turtleholic musk turtle👍🏽

I have a 75 gallon. I recommend at least 75 gallon for a red eared slider

Yep!

I have kept ours for 17 years
That’s impressive!
my turtle also has small white patches on her shell
Are you able to scrub them off?
there are some still left

You are amazing thank you. I will do research on that one. I was considering the cooter but my research has been conflicting 😅
what should I do??? my red eared slider won't swim
is it a baby? sometimes they can be hesitant to go in the water at first.
Hi My Turtle 🐢 Shell Is Very bad I Don't know what to do.. I live in 🏔️ Mountain.. Area. If it the water 🌊 here
Are you using a water conditioner when you fill up the tank? This help removes chemicals found in tap water.
I had one that was bigger than that one yours
But your not allowed to keep gold fish with turtles
Yeah it's not the best choice as a tank mate.
my turtle's eyelids are gray instead of green when she sleeps
That's actually normal. You can see more in my video about turtle sleeping: th-cam.com/video/jcVSrBSur0Q/w-d-xo.html
@@turtleholic she sleeps a lot during day time next to the filter
How do i know if my red eared slider a female or a male ? Bcs im confused w mine 😂
Usually females have shorter claws/nails. You can also sometimes tell based on the tail. I think your best bet is to look on google images
We can know by looking at its tail if the tail is short and a bit fatty then it is female and when the tail is long and slim then it is a male turtle
