Yeah, we just went to the pet store and bought a turtle spontaneously because my grandson wanted one. Secretly, I have wanted one too. It was a expensive purchase with the aquarium, food, the turtle itself, etc. Still not done though as I want to make sure this turtle has everything it needs. Your videos are a big help. Thank you.
I have had my turtle for almost 2 years now, and when my parents first told me i was aloud to finally get a turtle when i was 10, i literally binged on all and i mean all of your videos at that time! I had always wanted a turtle forever and i have been so happy watching my turtle grow! When i first got him, he was the size of a quarter, and look at him now!(in my profile picture) i definitely understand all of the information you said today and i hope all the new turtle keepers can enjoy their turtles just as much as us!
And don't forget everyone: Adopt, don't shop also applies to turtles. You can adopt them from some shelters or from previous owners who are no longer able to take care of their pets.
That’s what I did two years ago ... bought a fish tank and the turtle came with it., I told the seller that I wanted to do some research on turtles first and I discovered The turtle girl And Dan the turtle man on utube who convinced me to become a turtle mum! Two years later and I couldn’t imagine my life without my beautiful Zues - king of the turtles! (Previous owner just called him “Turtle”). I have four dogs and Zues fits into my family beautifully .... he is my “water puppy” and I love him to bits. .. Thank you turtle girl!
So hey I'm definitely not going to buy one, but do you think it would be okay if I just foraged for one? Like just grab him out of the creek and plop him in a tank? I live in a rural area and see them sometimes. I want to take one home

I'm moving houses soon and finally able to get a turtle, after 2 years of research!! Getting a Mississippi Map turtle within 2 months. Soooo excited
Yay! I have a Mississippi Map Turtle and I got her in New Year’s Eve! She grown a lot males tend to be smaller but females grow bigger make sure she has a filter,Heater,UVB light, stuff to dig in, and clean filtered water! They are so cute and I love them
I rescued a RES turtle i had no idea how much work and money go into their needs. I was thinking of giving it away. But we fell in love with her and couldn't give her up. It took time but now it's easier to care for her. She a character! always wants attention and it's super friendly likes head and chin rubs. She's our first pet and brings joy to our family.
Even tho i know the cost and the responsibility i really like watching these because it makes me really think if im making the right choice, which i am! I am finally getting a turtle in a couple weeks, but still working hard to get everything i need, happy turtle keeping!
That awesome the day after my bday (on new year Eve) I got my turtle Shelby she is a Mississippi Map turtle and even though I’m 13 and have a lot of stuff in life going on she is my happy place and life I begged forever to get one and I enjoy cleaning the tank and having the responsibility
I have learned so much from your videos the past month! I inherited an adult RES from my son when he moved to another state. I'll be transporting him to my son in the winter. We are having alot of fun with the turtle, now that I know how to properly care for him.....thx to you 😀!
I make impulsive purchases all the time. I’m cursed. One walk through Petco and I came out with a yellow belly slider and an aquarium kit. No research. I’ve been watching all your turtle videos and they’ve been so Informative 😅 thank you so much for putting in the time to help people like me 🐢
Hi, thanks for helping me through the years of owning turtles, I learned a lot. And now my turtles are having a happy life just because of your channel! Hoku is sooo sooo adorable ❤
I think it depends on your turtles temperament because my RES loves head scratches and cuddles(we are cuddling as I watch this video). They do cost a pretty penny to maintain though I just did the math for my budget and in the couple of months I have had her I am in the hole thousands of dollars
Any update on your budget? Ballpark amount? I want one but I’m not sure it would be the smartest choice for both a turtle and myself so I want to consider all things before committing to one.
I have had my Northern map turtle for about 31 years. He is still going strong. I am now in the process of setting up a much larger tank with a topper. I'm going to try adding some fish, as Northern map turtles mainly eat crustaceans and insects. They aren't fond of fish. Hopefully it goes well!
I'm teaching science this year and I inherited the classroom turtles. Three RES. It's honestly too much. The last teacher had a completely bare tank with a simple basking float. Because of that, it has to be cleaned once a week. It's my summer vacation and I have to drive out to the school to feed them and change the tank water. I had to buy a new light ...$48! To make the tank more enriching I have to buy sand, plants, decor, drift wood, and a better filter...for a 75 gallon tank...+$400. And I'll be honest, I'm not super into turtles, but my students love em. And I haven't even gotten into how hard it is to find a reptile pet sitter.
Also, and this is a legit question...what do I do when they get bigger?!!! I'm at a 75 gallon now, I can't afford anything larger. I had a wild one cross the road by my house it was huge!!! Will the ones in my tank get that big? What then, drop them off at the zoo? Seriously, what's the long term plan for these as pets?
Back when I was young, I found a turtle in a coulee. Took him, put him in a bucket with a rock. I fed him bugs I found in the yard or around the house. Maybe some lettuce or cabbage. Even threw in a small lizard or two. Didnt know they actually ate lizards. worms were his favorite. But he usually hated beetles because everytime he ate one, he'd spit it out. Id clean out his bucket and his shell when they became too mossy. Just used regular hose water. We kept him outside all year long, even when it was cold. My parents didnt want a big old bucket of stinky water in the house. I was scared when I walked outside to see the top of the bucket water completely frozen over. Thought my turtle had froze to death. But once the ice thawed, he was alive and well every time. That must have something to do with turtles being cold blooded. But one day it rained and the bucket overflowed with water and thats when the turtle got out and we never saw him again. We think he made it back to the coulee. Thats how I took cared for my turtles when I was a kid. But now that Im older and my nieces and nephews want a pet turtle, Im looking for more modern ways of taking care of turles. Even though im sure the traditional methods works, I just dont want their bucket to overflow with water and the turtle manages to get out.
I request you make a video on the first aid which we can provide a turtle in home if it's sick, especially swollen eyes and respiratory system problems as many places don't have vet specific for reptiles.
I got a 2 turtle for several months now and Everytime i go shopping/online, i just think about what i need to buy for my turtles. It's all good though i love them and they are stress reliever
Omg first ,love your videos so much after lots of thinking and research I was considering getting a turtle ,videos like this really help with that decision 👍😀
I'm not sure how to word it, but having a pet is like adopting a kid but they never grow up. The individual needs are different, but the total amount of effort is the same.
She’s right about the money!! I’m in the process of starting my tank I already spent over 300 💀 and I still have to buy a few more things😭( some items I didn’t really need, so it could be less) but still is enough to break ya pockets a little 😂
@@TheTurtleGirl YESS I couldn’t even finish blinking before my money was gone 💀 but it’s soo worth it. Al I have to do is make a basking area and get a water heater and I’m set!!

I think I love turtles so much because of Squirt, the baby turtle from finding Nemo (the cutest cartoon/animated character)

2 weeks ago, I got the cutest Southern Painted Turtle. He is of course super shy and he almost never leaves the basking spot. For those who are panicking and worried about buying/adopting a turtle. First of all, it really is not for everyone. But if you are a busy person like me and you have work and school then turtles do make really great pets if you have the funding to provide for them. Please please please make sure you have UVB, heat, a filter, heated water, and a large enough tank, these creatures are very resilient but if you provide lots of space and go the extra mile to allow them to thrive, they will just be so happy. I don't have tons of experience yet but after 3 months of researching and watching The Turtle Girl, I finally was able to bring home a beautiful new painted turtle. (His name is Henry) As a side note, DO NOT PANIC if you see white spots or imperfections on your turtle's shell. I saw these on Henry's shell and I was looking, feeling, and sniffing because I was so worried that it was shell rot. Chances are that if you provide the right things for your turtle, it is most likely just a hard water stain. I live in Utah and the water is heavy in minerals so this is likely just a hard water stain. I just wanted to put this out there for first-time pet owners such as myself. Keep it up Turtle Girl! You are my idol!
Glad someone gave of all this info, and I totally agree! Im getting a turtle in a couple weeks (eastern painted), I’m so excited, glad you know your stuff! Happy turtle keeping!
I have a yellow bellied slider about 3 1/2 inches long and ive had her almost a year. With all the research ive done, i still do more research on her to give her the best life possible. I recently added fish to her enclosure and she seems super happy! Thank you for the info that you give turtle keepers😁!
I was literally just up ready for school watching some sort of video and all of a sudden there was a turtle on the screen and I decided I want the turtle. Now I am hoping to get one in a few months
I have had my red ear slider form little to 16years old now she is well trained i pick up and hold her every can hand feed to very lovable to me wont bite me too !!!
I’m building my first turtle tank! gonna get a couple stinkpots, thinking a really moss heavy tank so they can hides n stuff. How much money all round you think I would need to spend for a complete 40gal tank for 2 stinkpots? ty love your videos (p.s. may start a 10gal guppy/shrimp farm for a couple months before I start building the turtle tank.)
Hello, I love watching your videos. I would like recommendations for a heater for a 75 gallon, the one I have has just a turn knob and doesn't keep a constant temperature. I'm fixing to make an over tank basking area out of egg crate and I will fill tank up. I also have small gravel as a substrate, do you suggest sand or gravel, and how do you clean sand? I have 2 cooter turtles, I believe, I got them as hatchlings in January 2023. Thanks in advance for suggestions.
Sooo cute!! My Brobie, 7 year old red ear slider, somehow got out his tank and ripped off one of his scales and now its turning white and the little piece that's still on is getting water logged.. sadly theres no improvement with her basatracine cream treatment ..would you suggest to bask her more and keep her shell out the water?? would you suggest salt baths?? Any advice and links are greatly appreciated 💜
Where’d you get such a large basking area? I have two 7 y/o RES’s so they’re a little large. They already have one basking area so they don’t mind sharing but I’d like to get another, especially like yours, but everywhere I look I only see small ones.
I wish I only got one turtle. One turtle I was ready to get and the others, not so much. I knew that I could provide for them in a short amount of time but I rescued two. They said that there were two one year old res one female, one male. Because they were only a year old, I thought that she would be small. Nope. 9 inches. They’re all happy and healthy in properly sized enclosures (other than one but I’m getting a knee tank later this month) but water changes are the worst
@logan forsyth i am getting a painted, there awesome, but @jelly turtle 2 turtles is a lot especially big turtles, but im glad they are getting good care, if you know someone trustworthy and can take care of the turtle you could give one away, but the person needs to know what to do and alot about aquatic turtles
@@zollyActingandTheater I actually have three. I can maintain proper care for all of them, it’s just not the best part of the week. A lot of maintenance go into them
I am considering either getting a musk turtle or an axolotl. In your opinion, which one is easier to care for? It seems like axolotls get sick very easy, at least from everything I have read. I would really value your input, I think you are so knowledgeable and I love your videos!
G'day Turtle Girl. I just watched one of your old videos on feeding turtles, mine is an Australian short neck. I've tried feeding him pellets made for him from pet shops but he hates them. I feed him live worms from the pet shop. Is this okay that he hates the pellets? Cheers
Worms as treats are great! but ideally, for a well rounded diet, you'll get him onto pellets. Sometimes a little tough love and only offering pellets is the way to go to get him onto a more nutritious and complete food
My musk turtle was very healthy and happy. But then one day he just wouldn't eat anymore and we couldn't afford going to the vet so he ended up dying. I tried everything and did tons of research online but nothing worked. I know it wasn't me because I took amazing care of him. I guess things like that just happen sometimes. I wanna try again as it's been a year since he passed. Do you think I should?
I have 2 Pink bellied side neck hatchlings and 1 adult female. Can they mingle or will she try to eat them. Currently have a mini tank inside the big tank for separation while they associate.
Hi there, newby question: can I feed my 3-month old RES Nutrobal powder ? I was looking for a vitamin D3 supplement and the shop owner recommended this. If it is OK, how can I feed them the powder? I usually give them regular sticks and dried shrimps.
I’m getting a turtle really soon but it said it needs a license? So if you know how to get one are you able to make a video to help me and some others? Thanks you for reading and I love your vids!❤
Do you know if any fish meds are safe to use on fish with a turtle still in the tank? I have Maracyn, ich-x, and para-cleanse. I've had a striped mud turtle for a few years and she's healthy, and I recently added some culled guppies a friend gave me to her tank, they seem to be thriving, and the turtle mostly leaves them alone after their first day together, I guess she learned they are too fast for her 😂
Awesome vid, very informative, I wasn't sure on how much to feed a turtle exactly, but I'm assuming they eat less when they're little, and more as adults when they have a bigger stomach probably. I've always liked turtles and see them as majestic lil creatures that are cute af, and plan on getting one in a few months after I do some more proper research.
Yeah! A great rule of thumb is feed them an amount that is about equivalent to the volume/size of their head. Frequency is actually opposite though. Baby turtles get fed more often (like daily) but adults usually get fed 3-4 week.
Can any of you please tell me a video how to take care of a land turtle cuz I've been searching up so many times that I cannot find any they're always not land turtles it's either water turtles or box turtle
hi turtle girl! i fear my 3yo res is gravid, but would it be possible to dm you to confirm if her actions line up w this suspicion? ijust adopted her from my friend who hasn’t undergone nesting season yet and need help as a major beginner. thank you in advance!
my brother has a turtle and its a red eared slider we found it at a pond and it had been abandond there were two but we werent able to catch the other one
I like box turtles not water turtles i had two box turtles that i caught when younger. Had one named fred. But dont remember the small one i had name. Did keep them long tho i released them.
Question : How does feeding work if you have a turtle and fish in the same aquarium? Turtles you only feed every couple of days, but fish you feed several times a day. Does the turtle then end up stealing the fish's food?
i find its usually the other way around, the fish try to steal food away from my turtle. the fish are nice cleanup crew from the turtle scraps left behind for mine.
Oh well I planned (I don't own the turtle yet) to feed the turtle outside the aquarium so it doesn't make a big mess, I was just worried I'd have to also take it out just to feed the fishies.
I feed my turtle as the turtle girl does, I provide my turtle in a separate container since they make a huge mess but I also have fish with him. You can try food that certain fish like but chances are, your turtle will eat whatever comes into the tank. Just make sure you don't over feed your turtle but fish will eat whatever the turtle doesn't eat, they are helpful with keeping your tank clean
To keep tanks cleaner you can feed your turtle in a separate tube, then feed your fish then, if you need to feed your fish more than once a day you can try to feed them when your turtle is basking, but idk if theres a perfect way around it.
Great advice! I find that even if the turtles go after the fish food, the fish are usually faster and don’t have an issue getting their fill while the turtle is still in the tank. I feed the turtle outside the tank pretty much always :)
Question 🙋♂️ my red eared slider has been living with gold fish for a while now thing is she never goes for them but any other fish she will instantly target them why like she never goes for the gold fish nevertheless the gold fish have been there before her to I even recorded all night once never targets the gold fish I just want to know why
hi my names Nevaeh i am looking into getting a turtle because they are my fav animal and i was wondering if a turtle tank could make your room smell bad
75 gallon tank is a good start. Use sand for the substrate. Probably some wood and plants. Provide a basking area like an above tank one or floating dock. Edit: remember to upgrade as it grows
75-120 gallon, get the basics like water heater, basking bulbs, basking platform decor for hiding, and filter, then get some large river pebbles or fine sand for substrate, just make sure he can bask, has warm water, and a filter, then get the rest as soon as possible

Thanks for sharing Logan! Sounds like Henry has a great home with you :) appreciate the support!
I have a yellow bellied slider about 3 1/2 inches long and ive had her almost a year. With all the research ive done, i still do more research on her to give her the best life possible. I recently added fish to her enclosure and she seems super happy! Thank you for the info that you give turtle keepers😁!

Ive always wantd a turtle my whole life, thanks for the prep.

@@TheTurtleGirl hahah yup! He is now older than I was when I first got him
I was literally just up ready for school watching some sort of video and all of a sudden there was a turtle on the screen and I decided I want the turtle. Now I am hoping to get one in a few months
Haha well hope my vids help!

Random person: Aw, I want a turtle!
Literally ALL water turtle owners: NO
I just got one around the trail. It’s dirty and really messy. Still researching what they eat, how yo feed, care for daily.
Love the vid. Btw Hoku be lookin cool today
Thanks!
You going to be at the pacnw reptile show in Puyallup this month
i had an all black diamond back turtle who unfortunately passed in September of 2020 and OMG I WANT MORE
Why is turtle completely submerged ? He doesn’t need a place to just rest on, out of water?
turtle girl is so kind she always likes everyone comment and replies back she is sweet and kind
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Any advice and links are greatly appreciated 💜
im going ot get one of the smaller turtles, is a fish tank water filter usable? or do i have to buy one?
I am going to get a yellow belly slider and I’m so excited. Can you post a video about Them
I just woke up and my dream last night was so random it was about getting a turtle and now i want one
Can you pls tell me can we use normal bulbs instead of UV A and B for turtles? I want to buy a red eye slider turtle baby.
Just got one when we was fishing. My sons wanted a pet turtle can’t wait to see there faces
Where’d you get such a large basking area? I have two 7 y/o RES’s so they’re a little large. They already have one basking area so they don’t mind sharing but I’d like to get another, especially like yours, but everywhere I look I only see small ones.
I have a 6 yrs old RED EARED SLIDER TURTLE learned a lot from you
I wish I only got one turtle.
Yeah, red-eared sliders are ungodly and get HUGE. I went with painteds since they stay pretty small.
A lot of maintenance go into them
I feel ya on the water changes 😂🥲 glad you were still able to keep them though!
i dont have a uvb light, so how!? will my turtle die?? Pls comment here cause i wanna know
I am considering either getting a musk turtle or an axolotl.
@@TheTurtleGirl Okay cool.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers 🐢🐢
"but what happens if I just really want a turtle and I don't want a massive tank?" *A very deformed or very dead turtle happens*
Owner of two year old map turtles in a 75 gallon. Don't be afraid of a bare bottom tank. Makes cleaning easy
I agree, but it is easier to see wast this way, which is not great for viewing but perfect for cleaning!
Bare bottom is great!
Is there a specific bulb for turtle tank since it needs “both”
Hell yea girl!! This was a necessary video!
Hey, my uncle is giving me a turtle 🐢!!!! They had it for their kids, but they don't take care of it. They have it in a small bowl.
I'm getting a pet turtle soon, and this definitely helped a bunch!
happy to hear it!
I have a question can I put a baby turtle with a big turtle ?
I got a red eared slider I rilly love it
Can any of you please tell me a video how to take care of a land turtle cuz I've been searching up so many times that I cannot find any they're always not land turtles it's either water turtles or box turtle
Not that I have a plan to keep a turtle 🐢, I’m strictly a fish guy, but I love your videos as they are really informative and interesting 👍
Aw thanks for watching anyway! Appreciate it John!
One question plz. Do the tanks smell a lot??
alright!..I'm ready for Satsuma and Clementine!
hi turtle girl! i fear my 3yo res is gravid, but would it be possible to dm you to confirm if her actions line up w this suspicion? ijust adopted her from my friend who hasn’t undergone nesting season yet and need help as a major beginner. thank you in advance!
Do they need to be in a tank?
my brother has a turtle and its a red eared slider we found it at a pond and it had been abandond there were two but we werent able to catch the other one
its a baby now and its goten biger
Like we could touch his face he won't care not bite at all❤❤❤
We had a land turtle and he was so nice we could put his face and he wouldn't even bite
Its funny how TH-cam has become cluster of do's and don'ts videos for EVERYTHING!!!
You own. A delorean😲?
Great video!
I have a 1 year old male RES. Should I still feed him everyday?
I like box turtles not water turtles i had two box turtles that i caught when younger. Had one named fred. But dont remember the small one i had name. Did keep them long tho i released them.
my dad got 2 turtles for me and my sister I've now had them for 3 years
Thank u! I had no idea how much work it is, ill be looking at fish now lol
Haha glad it could help! Enjoy :)
My daughter brought home a turtle and I don’t know how to identify what species it is. Can someone help me?
All right, you convinced me
I have this white fungus in my tank, is this good or bad?
hey!! I had just got a softshell turtle he is around 7+ inches what is a good tank setup for him?
75 gallon tank is a good start. Use sand for the substrate. Probably some wood and plants. Provide a basking area like an above tank one or floating dock.
Edit: remember to upgrade as it grows
75-120 gallon, get the basics like water heater, basking bulbs, basking platform decor for hiding, and filter, then get some large river pebbles or fine sand for substrate, just make sure he can bask, has warm water, and a filter, then get the rest as soon as possible
@@zollyActingandTheater tysm he is gonna be very happy with his new home im doing exactly as you said
Best of luck!
