    Thanks for this video!! I was being harassed in my chat by a person I use to work with and who was also a subscriber. He ended up being one of my founders and with the new ability to change that I was able to ban him from my streams and also remove the founder's badge from him. I'm not a big creator but no matter what size you are.. you should never have to deal with that in your own space.

    I AGONIZED over banning a viewer (I'm generally at like 10 viewers with 1-3 active chatters). This person was on EVERY stream chatting the entire time. But they kept making jokes and comments that made my uncomfortable. I felt like having an active chatter was a huge asset so I let this person stay for WAY to long.

      Some chatters ruin the experience for the other viewers so in the end it doesn’t matter if they’re giving you an extra view because that person could ultimately hold you back from getting even more viewers. You have to be able to read the room and decide what type of community you want to cultivate!

    • @badgamerwyatt
      @badgamerwyatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a similar experience! They didn't break any rules but made me super uncomfortable. I was told later by another viewer that they stopped chatting bc they didn't want to interact with this viewer. I didn't ban them, and fortunately they didn't come back, but I will in the future!

    You made this video at just the right time for me, I started streaming a month ago and hit affiliate two-ish weeks ago. For the first time I had a chatter come in the other day whining about how bad I was playing, saying "lol imagine dying, couldnt be me", or that I should bring certain perks, and constantly begging to 1v1 me (on dbd??) or join my games. I've never had to ask someone to stop yet so I considered silently banning them because honestly it ruined the whole stream for me, I was actually starting to internally panic and I was doing even worse in game because I was thinking too hard about it. When I finally worked up the courage to gently be like "H-hey can you please stop..." They just say "Ok" and CONTINUE TO DO IT lmaooo. Thank you for the advice, I'll def be using it in the future I love streaming so much I never want to stop

    Can confirm as a small, small streamer, even if you barely have any viewers you will feel so much better banning someone who makes you uncomfortable. I had a consistent chatter that randomly started being really weird talking about being violent, or their sex life...which like idk why you feel the need to tell me this stuff lol EVERY TIME they would join my chat the rest of my consistent chatters would immediately stop talking...and then they would ask why I have X amount of viewers but nobody is talking... (gee I wonder why)🤦‍♀I banned them and feel so much better. Like yes I want more chatters but man I cant be entertaining when someone makes me feel as awkward as this person did. I'd rather talk to literally nobody 😂

    Another thing I feel is positive about banning people that are not behaving right is reinforcing the feeling of safety for the viewers. Some viewers need time to open up and be active in chat, and so having someone that makes them feel uncomfortable is a real detrament to your chat. While openly banning them and saying why you ban them can have the opposite effect of bringing out those more shy viewers to start chatting

    • @tinox412
      @tinox412 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on the situation. Sometimes openly banning someone sets an example for the other viewers and shows them that you will not tolerate that kind of behavior.

    • @TheGravityShifter
      @TheGravityShifter ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tinox412 But at the same time, they know what lines not to cross. As long as you're firm, fair, and clear about what you want and don't want in your chat, it will all work out in the end. You have every right to fear if they have a dictator style rule where it feels like you're walking on eggshells just for writing something down.

  • @UnknownDarkness47
    @UnknownDarkness47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Absolutely the truth. Ive had weird people come into chat and ruin the vibe and ruin it for the lurkers. That 1 viewer that makes things weird isn't worth keeping around, and the others that are in your chat may leave because of it

    First of all, I have learned so much from your videos, and I want to say thank you for all the amazing content that has helped me over the past 18 moths as a total newb stepping into streaming. Secondly, I appreciate you sharing your take on this important topic. I am all about good vibes and treating people with kindness and respect. But I've made the mistake of letting some regulars/supporters get away with these "not quite over the line" behaviors that are so frustrating to me. I'm going to watch this once more to make sure it all sinks in, and then start cleaning house!

    This made me think more about timing out/banning a certain person. That one have always been on "the edge" of going overboard, and never had "a reason" to timeout/ban that one. But good to know that if I feel they bring the mood down, that it is okay.

    I'm a music production streamer, and I've banned a few people trying to self-promo, by coming to my chat solely to ask "hey I was wondering if you could you check out my music". While I'm clearly mid-stream... And clearly working on something... I used to try and be polite and say "if you're that desperate for me to listen to it, just send it via SoundCloud or something", but yeah nah I just flat out say "no" now. I don't want to ruin my vibe/flow mid-stream by stopping to check out someone's dot mp3 on SoundCloud and nor do I want to open the floodgates and get spammed with requests for that if word got around that that's something I did...

  • @archmagesar
    @archmagesar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I honestly wish I'd watched this video sooner.
    Over the past few days I've had to do two things. The first is tell someone that they were being rude and I didn't approve, to which they responded I had no sense of humour and that they were leaving. I actually encouraged them to leave and they did. This was the first time I've really handled anything like this and I felt so good about it - I really wish I'd started doing this a year ago when I first started streaming. But the second thing I did was create a private personal Discord because I've had people come into my DMs and expect me to be constantly available and respond instantly. There was one instance where someone asked if they could chat with me, to which I responded, if I'm ever in the Discord server's voice chat, they're welcome to join in and talk. They came into my DMs anyway and started asking tons of questions that I didn't feel comfortable answering
    You've produced a brilliant video here with tons of really useful advice and I have to say, I totally agree with the idea of banning viewers when needed, regardless of viewer count. I get about 8 viewers on average which isn't much but 1 wrong person can absolutely ruin that and I'd rather have 7 legends than 8 people where 1 person is consistently ruining the vibe

    Yeah I needed to hear this. I'm way too hesitant to moderate chatters. While I was streaming my first Sekiro playthrough, I had someone who, while they seemed friendly enough, kept commenting spoilers. I did ask them to stop, but they claimed they didn't consider what they were saying to be spoilers, and kept doing it. It led me to using the "no spoilers" tag from then on, but that didn't make a difference. I did get mad eventually, telling him I just don't to hear it, but I really should have timed him out at least, and much earlier as well.

    Even "friends" its okay to ban if they ruin your stream or the experience for you. I see this happen alot with small streamers. They make this toxic community then i look at the sub count and its maybe 2 or 5 at most subs. Then half the time those ppl dont come back cause the chat has just ruined the whole stream. This video is helpful to not let that happen. You cant be afraid to ban, the more welcoming a chat / stream is the more likely someone will chat. And if these ppl arent even subbed, following or active viewers then just think, do i really want this in my stream? Twitch is hard enough as it is

    I actually turned banning into an event in my stream ~ as someone who streams League of Legends, I'll see enemy team or allies who flame or harass me. I still link my stream after the game and I tell my chat "wait for it...." and inevitably the toxic players pop in and of course, be toxic - pop! Instaban. There's almost something cathartic about it and my chat gets a laugh of it as well, it's nice to have control over that situation. It's also nice to see you mentioning warnings, being autistic I have a hard time identifying boundaries even when they seem obvious to others and this often discourages me from chatting in a lot of streams (especially after a streamer chose to talk bad behind my back for months rather than telling me when I crossed a line). Knowing that I'd be told straightforwardly if I did something wrong actually enables me to chat.

    Small streamer here, I did ban a few peoples, most of them being view botting promotion bots, but 2 of them where regulars, including one that was a sub.
    It is hard, but very necessary in order to make your viewers feel safe in your chat.

    Thanks for this! I had a viewer like a month ago that started sending paragraphs and paragraphs about his depression and suicidal thoughts and it got reaaally really uncomfortable and I didn't do anything because I felt bad and didn't want to be rude. This continued until I banned him and it made me enjoy streaming again and my 5 avg viewers too ❤️

    I agree banning someone who steps over certain lines and be toxic in your community can upset not just the streamer but the community itself so you need to lay down the law on the toxic person and if they continue then you escalate to timing them out or banning them because they make everything uncomfortable.

    Viewers have the right to speak their minds
    You as the streamer have the right to decide if you like what they said or not, it's your stream

    I started banning anyone under 18 back in January, when a lot of immature people were chatting on my streams...growth-wise, I'm frankly worse off than I was back then, since most Pokemon viewers are kids, but I'd rather have just one viewer if it's someone I can actually have serious conversations with.

    I kind of agree with this. I just remember getting banned by a mod for telling the streamer he hadn't changed away from the just chatting screen and getting banned. I appealed explaining the situation and the mod that banned me was the one that replied and basically told me "no, you just don't like being called out..." like... what?

    • @SyKaDeLiCEyEz

      this is why everyone is not mod material.. its also why i refuse to be in some streams because their choice of mods are lets just say subpar... but some streamers as well.. they get this sense of I have the power.. and ban for the dumbest things.

    Fantastic advice. When I hear the protest "but I only have a few viewers! I can't afford to ban one!" I am reminded of a nugget of wisdom I learned in tabletop RPG circles. "It is better to play in no game, than to play in a bad game." Perhaps it is not true for everyone, but in general in life I would think it would be better to not do a thing at all than do the thing, but have three crap-flinging howler monkeys making the experience of doing the thing absolutely wretched. Quiet chat is better than a chat full of assholes. Don't let your chat be full of what you consider to be assholes. Why would you want to hang out with assholes? There are plenty of not-assholes out there that'll come along if you make your stream a pleasant place to be.

    One thing I always wonder for smaller channels. Does having a couple insanely chatty people in your chat ruin the experience for everyone else. Even if these people are helpful and mean well I always feel like new viewers will be put off by it.

    • @sgsummerisle
      @sgsummerisle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm small and have a few word vomit-ers and I find that even if it's just one chatty person, that person can bring up topics that spark conversation from someone else. I think the problem is when it gets too personal or specific. If my irl friend pops in and wants to legit catch up, that's not good, but if one of my regulars is just sitting in chat bullying me or talking about an interesting topic it doesn't discourage people from chatting. Just my experience.

    if people don't fit the community you want to foster, then ban them instantly and let them know why after you did it. It helps set the tone and expectations of what you expect from the randoms, and how they should interact with you and other in chat. If they can't handle that, then good they won't be a person you want around.

    Very good video. It is hard to ban someone that is a little questionable. I just ignore them. This is part of the well I need more viewers even if they are toxic. You need to timeout or ban if a chatter makes you or your chat feel uncomfortable. You want every viewer to be a good viewer, this way you can have a good and growing community. Thanks for the great video.

    • @WaywardPython
      @WaywardPython 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can try to answer this one. Are there people who come regularly into your streams and your chat? Do they seem like enthusiastic and trustworthy people? Do you feel like they’re the sort of people who won’t be too hard or soft on troublemakers? Do they have your ‘vibe’?
      If so, consider asking them to mod for you. Remember you can withdraw mod status from them at any time if it doesn’t work out.

    Hey ,
    Just wanted to thank you for helping me starting 2 stream .
    It's really just the pure beginning .
    I've been trying to follow some tips but it's super awkward still especcially watching myself back.
    Talking with no one to bounce of is the hardest part . i can't seme to stand the sound of my own voice when watching back also and i find it really cringe XP.
    I'm a shy person around new people and want to chalenge myself in this way to be able to be more open towards new people.
    Once i'm comfortable with people i'm really extrovert as a person .
    i'ma try planning some talking points in following streams but still talking to 0 viewers still feels off.
    I'm saving up to buy a camera and a capture card so i can stream ps5 via PC so i can tune everthing better.
    Just another thx for the tips .
    And if u have any advice on how to get over the awkwardness of talking to yourself basicly pls share XP
    Alltough i guess that comes with expierience.

    Also important: be smart about choosing mods. And have a clear idea of what you expect of them and what gets warned, timed out, and banned. Have open and respectful communication with them, on and off stream. Be your own mod for as long as possible. I didn't have a mod until I was over 500 followers and a streamer friend offered to be my mod. I've seen terrible chats that I won't even chat in where the mods are the worst offenders in the toxic community
