Yes I have seen this happen. A lot of “old school” ladies aren’t up on the tubing mascara so they don’t know much about them. Same thing happened to me at the Clinique counter at Ulta, I could not remember the name of the tubing one I got and the Clinique lady had to go through all of them to help me figure out and remember which one it was, the problem is tubing mascara isn’t openly written as such. It does dry out quicker than regular mascara and when that happens it irritates my eyes cause it flakes off. I wish they did them in mini versions. I’d be on board with that. Great video. Thanks! 🙏🏽
Like nobody in Ulta ever knows what they’re talking about. Lady still recommending Clinique over all the other products they have like what🙄 definitely prefer Sephora
Glossier really is the best intersection of tubing benefits and holding a curl. Of course, it’s the most minimal looking because it’s depositing less of a wet formulation on your lashes. The Em mascara applies beautifully but it stays sticky all day. If you have long lashes, they’ll start to stick together.
I love that you point out the weight of the component because it’s not just about a luxurious feeling but it makes it easier for you to control! The same way that Robert Welsh recommends heavier weight brushes since you can balance it in your hand more easily and control application. Fantastic video!

I go through mascara quickly, I GO HARD on my eyelashes, never too much mascara for me! So drugstore is the way to go for me!
thank you for this--very helpful! I found the Panda Eyes one to be disappointing but I haven't tried these others! The Thrive is my absolute favorite, but I also like the Hourglass one and for very basic no-makeup looks I dig the 1999 one (it's like the Glossier or Victoria Beckham in that it's a small wand and the tubes are teeny tiny, so less satisfying to remove). Also found the "heimish" one (Korean brand) to be a good option!
@@janebarnette6548 the panda eyes looked okay on my lashes, it's definitely a step up from my sad short blonde lashes lol! And THAT is exactly the reason I am so not impressed with tubing formulas. Bummer is that I need tubing mascara because my eyes are extremely hooded and oily lids. 😒
I switched to tubing mascaras a year ago and I believe the ease of removal saved my lashes. My state is SO humid I wore waterproof every day to keep my lashes curled and fresh all day and it was such an effort to remove. My drugstore HG is No. 7 "Stay Perfect" - perfection, in my opinion. And my cheapie tubing fave is L.A.Girl Volumatic, $5.99 at my CVS.
I have bought this at least 6 times (No.7 Stay Perfect), but I only use it on my bottom lashes. It doesn’t build too much, but it never ever smudges or flakes. I don’t have that problem of smudging with my top lashes, so it serves a purpose for my bottom lash. Tiny wand too.
Waterproof over the Thrive! What a brilliant solution! I adore the Thrive mascara. With the exception that if there's snow or rain falling, combined with the humidity in NYC, I end up with the tubes all over my face. Can't wait to try your suggestion, Kackie!
I love DHC’s tubing mascara for my lower lash line only. So good. Tiny wand and it doesn’t smudge. It’s not my choice for upper lashes, though. Tubing doesn’t work for the volume I look for on my uppers. Bite or Stila Huge for uppers. Jane Iredale primer on both. Perfection. Yes, 3 products for just lashes, but it works wonders for me and everyone thinks they aren’t real. 😂
I use the hard candy one, and love it, but my lash needs are really different. I have super long eyelashes that like to stick together and fall flat and the hard candy mascara works great to separate and lift and I can get enough on that it tubes for me (water has to be super warm), but I totally see why most people wouldn't enjoy it as much as Thrive
Thrive is my first and favorite tubing mascara. My eyes are *so sensitive* and no tubing mascara has ever bothered them. Regular mascaras almost always do but I have found 2 that don’t. But the easy removability is what sold me. I’m never going back to eye makeup remover tugging on my eyes. Tubing 4 life club. I do wish there was a good cheap one. I’ve tried drugstore versions and they just don’t cut it. There was one by Elf that was truly decent, but of course they discontinued it.
I’ve tried a bunch of different tubing mascaras. That’s my favorite too! Only thing is No7 Stay Perfect really gives me a subtle look, not a lot of length or volume and I could really use both. However, it stays on in 100F weather and comes off like a dream. So it’s my go to for now.
i’m not even gonna lie i have the liquid lash extensions of the last one and i’ve had it for like a year and a half and it’s still so good. it’s one of those mascaras that you need to apply with your hands rather than blinking on the brush bc of how much there is. it’s my second favorite to the telescopic one
You are so going to make me try the VB mascara. I usually keep my thrive for quick big lashes and glossier for a softer more natural lash. If you like the curved wand and want a standard mascara that doesn’t smudge or flake and washes off pretty easily - with the wander beauty unlashed a try!
So helpful! You’re the only person I’ve heard speak at length (pun intended haha) about the VB. I love the Thrive, too, but I wish they’d do a redesign. The weightiness is great but the “script” font and the silver/turquoise is like 90s cover girl not in a good way (meow).
For lower lashes try MAC Gigablack Mascara. It’s got a tiny wand and it’s a tubing, very black mascara. Perfection on the lower lashes. Next on my must have is the Thrive Mascara. But, I will say, a friend sent me a mascara from Japan, Sendai Mascara 38 Grad Vol 01 Black. It was amazing. Not tubing but it didn’t smear, smudge or flake and water resistant. It was amazing. Unfortunately it retails in the US for $49.00+. So, it was a once in a lifetime treat.
I recently bought the new Tartelette Tubing Mascara by Tarte from Ulta when it was recently 50% off and I absolutely love it!! I totally recommend it the wand is smaller so you can easily get at all your lashes from every angle and seems to hold a curl better then most normal mascara.
I’m a tubing mascara junkie and I feel like the hard candy matures well but I only use it on top of waterproof Bambi eye for volume then the hard candy for extra length. Thrive is my all time favorite though!
I just came across this video after looking for anyone that may have compared the Thrive mascara to Milani’s tubing. Jen Phelps has a great video and this video came up after. Decided to watch you too. I love the thrive mascara but just this week tried Milani’s and oh boy they are so similar and Jen agreed 😆
Thanks Kackie! There’s also Sensai 38 mascara, which is also a tubing mascara. They have like 3 or 4 of them with different properties. And Sweed lashes mascara also claims to have tubing technology
I would’ve loved the Glossier mascara had it not made me loose my lashes. 😬 Thankfully I realized that it made my lashes fall out before I completely lost them all. It took 2 years for my lashes to fully recover after that. Apparently others have had the same issue. I don’t remember being too impressed with the Thrive for the money. And Revlon discontinued the tubing mascara I loved. So now I have a L’Oréal tubing mascara but it’s supposed to be a two step. I choose to skip the primer majority of the time.
This was a shocking…yet satisfying video for me to watch. Aside from the first 2 you mentioned, I have every single tubing mascara you showed and in the exact same ranking order. I’ve had troubles building the VB because of how tiny the wand is, but the formula and packaging are definitely amazing. Thrive wins though, hands down! The HG mascara is great, but their ethics and marketing strategies are shameful!
Before I found your channel last summer I had tried what felt like EVERY mascara out there - drugstore and high end alike and was always disappointed bc I had never tried a rubbing formula.!! Immediately ordered thrive and never looked back. Thank you so much 😘
Thrive is my holy grail BUT it's gotten kind of ridiculous in a downpour. Also, Velour Lashes has one that incorporates a lash serum which is intriguing to me. Great video!
This is so helpful. Thank you! Can’t wait to try Victoria Beckham. Fyi for people who have smudging issues- Glossier smudges on me. I wonder why? 🤷🏻♀️ Never have that issue with Em or Thrive.
I love your take. Lots of good information. BUT, where I differ from you...is that I don't care about the packaging. Just give me good product. And, actually, since I like to travel, I actually prefer a lighter tube. Thanks again for your insights.
Ohhh....I might just have to try a Tubing Mascara didn't know this was a thing until HLP did her recent mascara video. Thank you for this video. I can't stand smudging because I have super hooded eyes and I can't with most mascaras.... also living in Florida most mascaras don't stand a chance and I hate raccoon eyes. Let me take notes
This video is so helpful! I do want to say that Thrive didn't work for me AT ALL (flaked, didn't come off easily no matter how much or little I applied, made me look like I had about 5 eyelashes) and I don't normally have issues with mascara. However, the VB sounds great and will be my next try :)
I really appreciate this video & I have loved the Thrive mascara since it came out. Your advice to add a coat of waterproof mascara over it for’sweaty eyes’ makes so much sense. What brand do you recommend or like?
Is there a specific reason we arent saying the “M+rhymes with edit” brand name anymore? Are they cancelled? What did I miss? 👀 Also, It Cosmetics just came out with a tubing formula. I my lashes really enjoy their Superhero formula so was curious about it. That VB mascara looks up my alley. Also will consider that one to try.
The cruelty free thing is so hard especially when you mention Clinique. I have a few products that I cannot find replacements for anywhere else that's cruelty free so I keep using it but I feel bad every time I do.
Tubing mascaras also don’t work as well in very humid climates. I used the Thrive in Mexico and regretted it. My curl dropped and the tubes came off all over my face.
I tried the VB mascara (my first tubing mascara) and I hated it. I think it was wand shape because I don’t think I was able to get it properly tube. When I would wash it off, it was a disaster with little pieces of mascara everywhere on my face and in my eyes. I may try another one because I love the concept. Thanks for the video! Very informative!
I bought the Milani one and 😂 my curl ➰ disappeared 😂 went on vacation, so if I want to make it work I have to previously apply a regular mascara to hold the curl ❤
I love your hair up like that. It's so cute! 😊 Thank you for the review. I've been in need of new options. >>Oh, and Thrive's pumpkin spice lip balm is back. I'm definitely going to get it. Think I'll go ahead and get their mascara too.
Thank you for this video! I have kind of the opposite needs as you from my mascara, and this was so helpful. I have the Glossier and love it except… it smudges when I sweat! (I salsa dance multiple times a week and this is very problematic for me as you might imagine). I didn’t even realize it was a tubing mascara. But I only use one coat because I like something that just barely coats my light but long eyelashes. Thrive is too heavy and sticky for me in general, though I still use it because of the other benefits. But it’s a pain to get it to look right for me and I always end up wiping a bunch off with my fingers and struggling to separate my lashes 😂 I’m going to try Victoria Beckham’s I think, and possibly Em’s bc I LOVE that brand so it’s worth a try. I’ll also try a 2nd coat of the Glossier, maybe that will help?
I know this is a dirty brand but when L’Oréal first came out with their tubing product it was fantastic and held a consistent texture from application to removal then they changed it. My last tube it dried down hard and very stiff and didn’t perform like the original.
Thanks for the info on the thrive that was my complaint because of my oily eyelids. I love the No7 stay perfect tubular mascara for my lower lashes..stays on for my 12hr shift even though I have oily skin. It is fine and I'd say not as impactful as thrive.
I actually love the glossier mascara lol I hate how mascara feels on my eyes and it’s the only one I’ve used that feels like nothing. But I do wanna try more tubing mascara cause while I like glossier, it looks very very natural
I love to use a lash primer under the glossier mascara. The primer adds volume and curl, and the glossier adds color, length, and separation. Loreal makes a great primer that's inexpensive.
How do you remove tubing mascaras if you use an oil cleanser? I love tubing mascaras for the smudge-free wear, and I know they remove easily with water. But I use an oil cleanser to take all my makeup off. Do you remove with water first, then use your oil cleanser?
Hey Kackie, I struggle hard with the Hourglass mascara. This is the only tubing mascara I have tried. Could be user error, expectations that weren’t realistic. My mascara desires are length and volume. My holy grail is Chanel le volume. So, your recommendation is to first coat then second coat straight away? I found it so hard to manage. I have tried to wait for a bit of drying, fail. I tried to re-coat fairly quickly after the first coat-fail. Maybe it just won’t work. Wondering other people’s experiences?
Try building it by just combing through and don't pause. Don't go back in the tube for more product, instead turn the wand to apply all the mascara that it has on it. Just keep brushing it up and into the lashes. This works great for me.
I just tuned in, I just found you BUT thank you, thank you, thank you for keeping “cruelty free” in mind AND talking about it. We must stop animal testing. 🙏 I’m going to head right over to your video on the topic as soon as I finish watching this one. 🌼
I HATED the thrive mascara and I know that's an unpopular opinion but its SO clumpy to the point where it looks like I took a trip back to the early 2000's where everyone just put a ton of coats on. If you want that effect after ONE application then get the thrive mascara lol. I used to use Perversion by urban decay but I'm trying to fin a clean beauty option because I have sensitive skin and I noticed during quarantine when i was wearing like no make up that my eye lashes got way longer. This is presumably because the perversion was causing breakage from wearing it daily. I hardly wear make up now but when I do i only wear mascara. So on my hunt still!
Forget waterproof - _pfft_ - tubing is where it's at! Currently messing with two cruelty-free drugstore options: Essence Bye Bye Panda Eyes (soft and Glossier-like) and L.A. Girl Volumatic (spikier). And don't drag me, but Jeffree Star F*ck Proof is my favorite 😬
Thank you, Kackie - can’t get Thrive where I am so went with the Hourglass. I had been looking for a mascara that wouldn’t smudge (I have oily lids) but was also easy to remove. Did not even know about tubing mascaras before this video. Game changer!!
Blinc sent me two new tubes of that volumizing formula to try out as they claimed the initial clumpiness was due to a manufacturer error in which too much mascara was placed into the tube. The new ones apply a little better but they do that exact awful move where the bristles unfurl through the thick formula even on initial opening. I wish they would have made the bristles a little more stiff to prevent that effect.
This was the first vid of yours I watched and I see why I’ve been following you for years 😂 yeah the blink was the first I tried and I hated it. I think I followed you originally for the TUBING 😂

It is better to be 95% cruelty free than to just give up because you aren't 100%! All purchases make a difference!
For the waterproof hack, do you let the Thrive dry down all the way or while it’s still tacky? Thanks!
The impression of the blinc mascara brush cracked me up 😂🤣
Tubing mascaras also don’t work as well in very humid climates. I used the Thrive in Mexico and regretted it. My curl dropped and the tubes came off all over my face.
Your eye color is stunning!❤
Where have I been?! Tubing Mascara sounds AMAZING!!! 😍 This is the second time I've heard that name but still had NO idea what that meant... 😬
You have to try the heimish dailism smudge stop mascara (on yesstyle), it’s my fave tubing mascara!
I forgot about that one , thanks for the remind! 😉
Glossier smudges on me too. Em has been great and is much lighter than Thrive. You might like!
@@clrulli ooh thank you so much! I’ll definitely try it out before the VB (because price and the VB is like half the amount of product 🙄)
OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! So happy for this! I can only wear tubing mascaras. If I didn’t love you so already…
I know this is a dirty brand but when L’Oréal first came out with their tubing product it was fantastic and held a consistent texture from application to removal then they changed it. My last tube it dried down hard and very stiff and didn’t perform like the original.
There’s also the lise watier glam 24h that is a good tubing mascara option 😊
You didn’t mention meybelline mascara , is very good
which one do you feel holds the best curl?
The Victoria Beckham brush looks a lot like the CLIO mascara brush. I need to try the Thrive mascara.
"hunky chunky" is in my vocabulary now
I’ve never tried a tubing mascara, but after this video… think I need too! Thank you Kackie!
I bought the Thrive at the beginning of summer and it has been my go-to mascara.
Thanks for the info on the thrive that was my complaint because of my oily eyelids. I love the No7 stay perfect tubular mascara for my lower lashes..stays on for my 12hr shift even though I have oily skin. It is fine and I'd say not as impactful as thrive.
I've heard that the LA Girl Volumatic Mascara is an affordable tubing mascara. I haven't tried it yet, but I'd be interested to hear you review it
It's decent but does smudge a little
Woah, what a tubular video 🤩🤩🤩
I was really concerned that Thrive mascara would be de-throned... ha! Always love hearing your recommendations!
Thanks for the warning regarding sweaty eyes. No one ever acknowledges that it's a thing. I feel seen 😅 (and I'll steer clear)
Have you ever tried the Surrat Relevee mascara? It’s so different from the Thrive and is great for someone with sparse lashes.
Thank you for explaining things so clearly. I am new to tubing and your channel. 👍🏻
How do you remove tubing mascaras if you use an oil cleanser? I love tubing mascaras for the smudge-free wear, and I know they remove easily with water. But I use an oil cleanser to take all my makeup off. Do you remove with water first, then use your oil cleanser?
Warm water first & then oil cleanse. 😉
Maybelline Sky High has the exact ingredients as Lancôme Idole. Both tubing I think.
This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear about! Thank you Kackie!
Thank you for reminding me my Thrive mascara is like 16 months old. Just ordered a fresh one! 😬
Would love to see what you think of the No7 tubular black (their tubing formula) - it’s a really great drugstore tubing mascara!
LOVED this video! I use the Thrive on top and the Em on the bottom!!
How about the Clinique tubing mascara?
Can you test kvd tubing mascara?
I feel the same way! I HATE the Thrive mascara and was hoping to get different answers here 😢
Forget waterproof - _pfft_ - tubing is where it's at! Currently messing with two cruelty-free drugstore options: Essence Bye Bye Panda Eyes (soft and Glossier-like) and L.A. Girl Volumatic (spikier). And don't drag me, but Jeffree Star F*ck Proof is my favorite 😬
I have bye bye panda eyes and it didn’t tube for me ☹️
@@kackie Sad panda! 🐼But your talkin’ tubin' gives me hope we'll see more at the drugstore. I'm a convert, for sure! xo
Thank you, Kackie - can’t get Thrive where I am so went with the Hourglass. I had been looking for a mascara that wouldn’t smudge (I have oily lids) but was also easy to remove. Did not even know about tubing mascaras before this video. Game changer!!
Happy New Year Kackie!!!!! Love you right back! ❤🎉
🥰🥰🥰
Hi! It might be worth giving the OG DHC Double Protection and the Sensai Lash Volumiser 38C mascaras a go! Would love to see what you think
The video we've all been waiting for! woohoo
Love the life hack! Thanks for sharing!
What are your thoughts on lash primer?
Can you please compare the Tarte hydroflex serum skin tint with the eaze drops by Fenty!!
This is SO HELPFUL!! Thank you! Love your channel, Kackie!! 💕
They’ll have to pry my Thrive in Crystal from my cold, dead, immaculate lashes!
