You just witnessed one of the great moments in rock history. Janis was mostly unknown at the time (she wasn't among the performers mentioned on the poster). This concert was the legendary Monterey Pop Festival. The mesmerized woman in the audience is another legend, Mama Cass (Cass Elliott), who was there to perform with her band The Mamas and the Papas. Janis became a huge star after this, but she always had difficulty with drugs and alcohol. Sadly, she died at the age of 27.
Mama Cass and The Mamas & Poppas were the organizers of this festival. This was Janis' debut performance. Much like Santana's debut performance at Woodstock, they were outstanding! Santana walked away with half a million fans before their first album was released! As you can see here, Janis made a few fans too!

FYI Jimmy Hendrix is sitting next to Mama Cass.
The guy in the crowd (at the end - the applause) in the white sweater with the blue V down the front was Clive Davis. He had just been named head of Capitol Records rock division and attended the concert. After this performance, he met Janis backstage and signed her.

It was her first live gig in front of a large audience. She was well known in south east Texas a few years before Monterey pop.
For Janis that's a double edged sword. You're honoured she's there, but then you think: gee, I'd better be good. Knowing Janis she'd just take any angst from that and sing it out.

That lady looking amazed, like anyone else in the audience, was Cass Elliot, a famous singer and songwriter. I could go on for hours talking about Janis and this concert, Monterrey Pop Festival 1967. You have entered a deep and mind-blowing rabbit hole, known as the sixties and early 70’s. The music of this era spanned the spectrum and Janis was the epitomy of the times, including excess drug use, broad sexual experience and crazy clothes.
I am 66 and this was what I saw from a distance. Somehow, the times were more real.

Janis Joplin was and still is the best female vocalist to ever grace a stage......Cry Baby, Piece of my Heart, Mercedes Benz, the a cappella version, Summertime is a must, Maybe, Get it While You Can, Down on Me. That should get you started. Janis was unlike anyone on a stage. When she sang it came from the deepest part of her soul every time. She was the subject of bullying from grade school on into college where she was voted the ugliest boy on campus. Yes, she is a member of the 27 club. The list includes, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Alan Wilson, Jim Morrison, Ronald McKernan, Pete Ham, Kurt Cobain. There are 20 of them all together. You have to understand at this concert they literally walked on stage as nobody’s and walked off stars with a contract. The saddest part of it all is she died before she ever knew just how much people loved her.

Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! She came to Brazil for a while to try to unwind and get rid of her addiction cause we hadn´t heroine here. She even performed with a local band as a guest singer. It´s very sad that she died only at age 27, as Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix too. A thunderous generation that passed fast like a comet. :(

I'm so old that I actually saw her in concert in San Diego. She was a force of nature! She put every bit of love, pain, vulnerability out there!

I am now 73 years old. In 1968 or 1969, my older sister took me to see Janis at the Avalon Ballroom for the first time. We sat on the floor and watched her sing, and I've been a fan ever since that day. She put her heart and soul into every song she sang, and in-between songs she passed a bootle of Southern Comfort around the front row. What a woman!
I lived next door to Janis Joplin in fall of 1967. In the Haight-Ashbury. I didn't know her personally, but I would see her running around the neighborhood. And, of course, I went to see her shows most weekends. My sister met her once. My sister got backstage, and Janis was standing over across the room talking and laughing with a bunch of musicians. She had a bouquet of roses in her hand. Then she saw my sister, and she crossed the room and handed her a rose. My sister and I still adore her to this day. The woman sitting watching Janis in amazement was Mama Cass, who is sitting next to Jimi Hendrix at the show. Mama Cass was one of the organizers of the show.

The 27 club is an unfortunate term for artists who we lost at that young age. Even though statisticlly that not the age number - it's truly sad 😞 that we lost so many in their prime. Here's a few. RIP to these legends.

Janice said during an interview on Dick Cavet that she sang from the bottom of the music, unlike most women singers who sang at the top. Every time she was onstage she gave everything she had, part of why she will be remembered as long as people listen to rock music.
Not just a regular spectator being amazed either - that's a hell of a singer in Momma Cass! Summertime is probably my favorite from this spectacular legend!

Big Mama Thornton wrote this song in the 1950s. Janis Joplin sang this in 1967 at this festival and recorded it in 1968. She died from a heroin overdose in 1970. She was 27.

Janis was special. Seen her perform many times. Rock & Roll festival roadie 1968 -- 1969 West coast to East coast. The last one I did was the West Palm Beach festival had Janis there she did her show and another with Johnny Winters and Vanilla Fudge band. "DOWN ON MAIN" and simulated going down Johnny too. Rolling Stones were the headliners. 3 days of Great Rock & Roll.

Janis' parents had wanted her to be a school teacher. But she started singing when she was 17 and never turned back. She was completely self-taught, learning from listening to many great musicians.

Just stop and consider the fact that no one had seen anyone do anything like this before her. People were in shock. Their brains were wondering if that sort of presentation of a song was even 'allowed' in a world just coming out of the pretty prudish 50's.

I was a child and she fascinated me and scared the hell out of me at the same time. We had only seen beautiful woman before. Very ladylike women Cher, Momma and Poppas, Dinana Ross ect and Janis was NOTHING like them!!! She was and still is unique.
There were a lot of unknown artists at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967. Janis and Jimi Hendrix as well as white audiences seeing the King of Soul and Canned Heat blues and a performance by Mike Bloomfield (Rock's 1st guitar hero) and his new band The Electric Flag that spawned Blood, Sweat and Tears, Pacific Gas and Electric, Ides of March and Chicago by introducing rock, blues and jazz. This concert inspired 1969 Woodstock
Otis Redding was the King of Soul.
She did have stage anxiety or stage fright. At the end you could see her run off the stage. She was with the band Big Brother and the Holding Company. You mentioned that her voice sounded a little low. A lot of people have complained that the band would have their amps up too loud and overshadowed her voice at times. You have to check out some of her other greats, Summertime, Cry Baby, Piece of My Heart, Me and Bobby McGee. Janis Joplin died in 1970 and the 27 club refers to those who died before they reached 28, Jimi Hendriks, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain.

Janis Joplin was a unique force. Basically a soul singer, straight up. For some reason her popularity and legendary status has kind of faded. Her style isnt as popular now. But she remains a favorite of mine from that era.
Side story: My boss from about 30 yrs ago went to highschool with Janis. And sat right behind her in class. She was very shy and self concious about her looks.
