That lady in the audience was the late great Mamma Cass Elliot. This is Janis at the Monterey Pop festival. Both these great artists are still missed to this day.
The woman in the audience is Cass Elliot. A fabulous singer blown away by another. Different styles and both at the top of what they did. Both gone way too soon.
Mama Cass was another great singer before her time. It's crazy how she was looking at Janis blown away when both women would go down in history as legendary musicians. You should do a react to the Mama's and the Papas.
First of all, this is 1967, let that sink in for a minute. You can't imagine how different things were then! As mentioned, this is The Monterey Pop Festival, and it started the festival scene. That's Mama Cass, of The Mamas and Papas, in the audience. Unfortunately, Janis lived like she sang and we lost her to "The 27 Club", along with Hendrix, Morrison, and others. Lots of footage and a great movie on the subject. Otis Redding absolutely tears it up, The Who completely wreck the place (literally), Jimi Hendrix set his damn guitar on fire, Janis blows everybody's minds because she was virtually unknown at the time, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and The Fish, Mamas and Papas, and on and on. This is history!
You're right, Tom, you've got to really think about it: this was over 50 years ago! If you weren't alive in the '60s I really feel sorry for you. You missed all of this. The music was awesome.
That woman looking on is The Mama Cass Elliot from The Mamas and Papas. She was a singer at the time she attended this concert. She was in awe of Janet Joplin’s performance. 🔥
Amazing as Janis's performance is here, my very favorite part of this video is Mama Cass mouthing "wow" at the end. And Mama Cass was already a star in The Mamas & the Papas by the time of this performance. What you are seeing is game respecting game.
The instrument on the stage floor is a called a guiro. It's a latin percussion instrument. The lady in the audience is the late great Mama Cass. She was in the 60's rock band 'The Mamas and Papas.'
Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Thank you both, for such a thoughtful reaction ❤ 💚 💙
The woman with the sunglasses you are looking at is Mama Cass from Mama and the Papas. They were the organizers of the festival. She has passed away too
"What is that?" It's a Latin percussion instrument. I forget what it's called. You hold it in one hand with the finger holes, the rub a small stick up and down the grooved surface of the hollow wood. RRRRRRIP RIKI RRRRRRIP RIKI RRRRRRIP RIKI RRRRRRIP RIKI...
One of her biggest inspirations was a Black female Blues singer from back in the 20s was Bessie Smith. When Bessie died she was buried in an unmarked grave. When Janis heard about it she paid to have a proper headstone installed. That missile is an instument you drag a skinny stick against the grooves
This performance was before she was famous. She wasn't even on the poster for advertising the festival. Following per wikipedia The Monterey International Pop Music Festival was a three-day concert event held June 16 to 18, 1967, at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California.[1] The festival is remembered for the first major American appearances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Who and Ravi Shankar, the first large-scale public performance of Janis Joplin and the introduction of Otis Redding to a mass American audience.
At 3:37 the lady in the audience is Cass Elliot from the Mamas and the Papas. They performed at that festival as well, she was just interested in watching Janice.
I knew you would love Janis! She was around for such a tragically short time but she made a huge impression! That’s Cass Elliot from the Mamas and Papas who was mesmerized in the audience. This soulful woman will always reach into your heart and leave you feeling something intense. That thing on the stage is some kind of percussion instrument (I don’t know the name or even how it’s played). Thank you Van 🌺✌️
That gourd like percussion instrument on the floor at JJ's feet appears to be one of the many manifestations of what is called a "Guiro gourd". I could have the name wrong and am not above being corrected.
First live performance for Ms. Joplin. She wowed the crowed. There is only one of her. The lovely lady in the audience was Mama Cass from the Mommas and the Poppas. She was also wowed. Thanks for this...
While this was her breakthrough performance, it was hardly her first one. She had been with Big Brother for nearly a year , leading up to Monterrey, and had played a lot of shows.
This was the world's introduction to Janis Joplin. She hadn't signed a record contract yet, in fact very few people had really ever heard of her at this point. That was about to change. As you can tell by the reaction of Cass Elliot in the audience that day Janis Joplin would go on to "wow" the world. You don't even have to be able to read lips to know what Cass was saying. I do recommend that you give a listen to the original version of "Ball and Chain", by the woman who wrote it, Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. As a point of reference, "Big Mama" Thornton originally recorded "Hound Dog" in 1952. It was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stroller specifically for her after they had seen her performance at a New York Blues club circa 1951.
Yup, in fact the film makers of Monterrey Pop didn't expect her to be in the movie. She was unknown, but created such a sensation that they had her play again on the second day so they could film her performance. The Otis Redding set from this show is amazing too.
And you know what else she added to it......Southern Comfort....100proof!! God bless her soul. I got this album from the Columbia Record Club. Remember them Van?

Janis sings with her soul every time!! She can make me cry every time I feel the pain in her voice!!! She was such a strong woman but had self confidence issues!! I wish she knew now how many people idealize her and think how beautiful she is!!!!
This lady could sing! Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. Had a lot of great songs such as "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over" & her original song "Mercedes Benz". If you want to see a bit softer side, check out "Me & Bobby McGee".

She had a tremendous voice and had a brief solo career before her untimely death in 1974.
Janice was awesome a real treat from Port Arthur Texas. She was a very generous woman too. When she found out her Idol Ella Fitzgerald was born penniless in an unmarked grave, he bought her the grandest tombstone that she could. Just one of her awesomely amazing gifts to people. Not too long before she passed away if she changed her will to leave $1,500 for her friends have an awesome party in her memory. Janice was a complicated who never found the love she craved and wanted all her life💔🙅🎈 misunderstood woman
the woman looking stunned was also a legendary singer! but when it comes down to janis ..... it was raw .... you got what she gave you, no more, no less. i never knew anyone who did not appreciate this voice / force of nature! big love to all people :)
Mamma Cass Elliot was one of the singers in The Mammas and Papas who helped organise Monterey Pop in 1967 where this is from. Hendrix got his big US solo start there as well. This is from a movie of the festival.
I do love me these "first time hearing" videos ... and I can't blame the presenters for not being familiar with the things in play when this music was made long before they were born. But with this Janis performance it drives me nuts that the presenters never seem to have a clue who the camera was lingering on (Cass Elliott) towards the end of the performance, and why. At the time there was a generally friendly but sometimes acrimonious competition between the performers from the San Fran scene (e.g. Janis) and the LA Scene. The camera lingered long on Cass Elliott (a.k.a. Mama Cass of the Mamas & the Papas) because someone understood this was a major event. Cass was blown away by Janis, and likely realized this performance and the festival in general were going to be a game changer.
John Phillips of the Mamas and the Pappas was a founder of Monterey Pop. Mama Cass et al were there to support but also perform. Somewhat unwisely perhaps they closed the festival right after Jimi Hendrix... a relative unknown at the time blew everyone away with his legendary performance. 1967 Monterey Pop was a huge stepping stone for Rock n Roll and made bigger stars of Joplin and Hendrix. Tragically they both OD'd 3 years later at the age of 27.

I lived next door to Janis in the Haight-Ashbury in the fall of 1967. I didn't know her, but I would see her running around the neighborhood and, of course, I went to see her perform most weekends. It cost, I think, about $2 to get into those shows in the Fillmore and Avalon.
At the Monterey Pop Festival in the second row was sitting well standing Mama Cass Elliot when Janis Joplin came out he started to sing there was a video clip and you could read Mama Cass Elliot lips when she was saying oh my God. Rest in peace and love Janice
My mom has been blessed with a voice much like Janis's. When I was a little kid my mom used to sing me this song and Mercedes Benz. No joke, I thought they were kid's songs that my mom was just singing to me, lol.
So it just reminds me of my childhood and when I was old enough to put together how absolutely not kid's songs these were and that it was Janis Joplin, lol. My sister named her daughter Janis. Joplin's songs impacted us.
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown) and the sky is grey!! Mamas and the papas singer Cass Elliot is who is looking at Janis in the audience. She is a legend herself!
Did you notice on stage she is an incomparable powerhouse and as she left the stage she was an innocent, carefree little girl running out of school going to the playground. If you haven't done so,give a listen to her songs Cry Baby,Piece of my heart and Me and Bobby McGee
La pasión de Janis cuando canta no se puede comparar con casi ninguna otra cantante que haya oido. Espontánea, libre, llena de sentimientos , de dolor y de alegría. Me sigue produciendo escalofríos escucharla en ciertos momentos de sus canciones.
the woman that was in the audience was Mama Cass Elliot, of the Mamas and Papas, they had many hits including Monday, Monday. I think they were one of the sponsors of this show, The Monterey Pop Festival.
so happy to get to see you hearing Janis for the first time! my reaction, many, many years ago, was pretty much the same. she was an amazing talent and is a measure by which i judge other singers. she did not hold back when she sang.
I was 17 years old when I heard her do "BALL & CHAIN". You can't even guess how much of an impact she made on music, and our listening habits. Stereos of any quality were so very expensive that only the "well-to-do" had them (but they didn't play Janis). Janis was so important to me and a small group of friends that we pooled our money and built one of the finest, most powerful systems found in any home. We constantly upgraded the equipment until Janis was performing live in our stereo listening room! GLORIOUS! We all searched for other EPIC performances and found many. ---> Jimi Hendrix, Les McCan and Eddie Harris - "Compared to What", JONI MITCHELL, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, LINDA RONSTADT, The Alman Brothers - "LIVE at the FILLMORE EAST", NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, CROSBY STILLS and NASH, LED ZEPPELIN, JETHRO TULL, MARVIN GAYE, SMOKEY ROBINSON, BACH, BEETHOVEN, MOZART. The list is longer than I can even remember. We EVOLVED into true music lovers who would play any genre, no matter where it came from, as long as it was the very best, musically, technically, artistically and it had to be Emotionally satisfying. ---> FUNNY, I still love that stuff, but NOW I listen to MARK MAXWELL - AKA Dr. SaxLove, almost exclusively! Especially doing MOTOWN hits. ---> I RECOMMEND the "Dr. SaxLove Musical Experience" to all!
I know how this girl in the crowd felt because I was just like this the first time I witnessed Janis my first time. I was in love instantly. Mama Cass loved her and was a huge fan. Cass was part of the the group the Mamas and the Papas
Eric Burdon and The Animals have a track "Monterey" that climbed the charts. In the song, he gives a shout out to each of the major groups that played at Monterey Pop. The music video here on the 'tube is pretty good too.
Janis was and still is the best female vocalist to ever grace this planet. She was always true to who she was and never performed without putting it all out there on the stage. She is someone who you should definitely react to. First off let me say that “Little Girl Blue” live/televised on Tom Jones. Its not only the best performance of her career, IMO, it’s the best video of her. This was when she had been clean for a little while and it was perfection. Other songs are a live version of “Maybe” then “Cry” “Summertime” “Piece of my Heart” “ Mercedes Benz” the a cappella version is best, “ Get It While You Can.” That should get you started. Janis sang with so much emotion every time, she always left it all on stage She was bullied all through school from grade school on into college where she was voted the ugliest boy on campus. She said that when she became a legit artist/ had made it she went to one of her class reunions with some of her friends and they were just indifferent to her. Which she assumed they would be. One other thing.....when she walked on that stage at Monterey she was a nobody, when she walked off she was signed on the spot and a star.
As a teen my Gf's LOVED HER! I didn't get it till much later being into my 80's hair bands.. Even though I loved my Jim Morrison.. But now.. OMG no one like her

the woman looking stunned was also a legendary singer! but when it comes down to janis ..... it was raw .... you got what she gave you, no more, no less. i never knew anyone who did not appreciate this voice / force of nature! big love to all people :)
Mamma Cass Elliot was one of the singers in The Mammas and Papas who helped organise Monterey Pop in 1967 where this is from. Hendrix got his big US solo start there as well. This is from a movie of the festival.
The woman in the audience is Mama Cass. She was already a star, in the Mama's and Papa's. She could sing, and knew what she was seeing.
The lady in the crowd was Mama Cass Elliot from the Mommas and Pappas.
Anything from Janis is such a treat. She was a distant cousin of mine.Everything she sings never fails to give me goosebumps
Wow a distant cousin! So are you from Texas too?
@@eviekelpie1 no, Tennessee. She was from my dad's side.Didnt know about it until around a year ago.Freaks me out just a little. From the family tree,it's my dad's side and her mother's side.
@@stephanietip oh wow! Yes I can imagine it would be greatly. I'm guessing your folks would've been in TX at some point
She is awesome love her.
I lived next door to Janis in the Haight-Ashbury in the fall of 1967. I didn't know her, but I would see her running around the neighborhood and, of course, I went to see her perform most weekends. It cost, I think, about $2 to get into those shows in the Fillmore and Avalon.
That's a really cool story 😎!!
And Bill Graham gave us all apples on the way out!
That woman's voice literally gives me goosebumps 😍 😩.
I hear it! Been hearing it for 50yrs! Still sounds good!
At the Monterey Pop Festival in the second row was sitting well standing Mama Cass Elliot when Janis Joplin came out he started to sing there was a video clip and you could read Mama Cass Elliot lips when she was saying oh my God. Rest in peace and love Janice
She walked on to the stage Janis Joplin, she walked off it a legend!
Hello from Texas! Janis lived up the road from me and The Winter Brothers never a dull moment. Something in the water.
That you know what kitten heels are just makes me love you more. 😂💜💚💛✌️
One of my Faves from the “Incomparable” Janis Joplin
I believe that the woman with the sunglasses is Momma Cass, also an amazing singer in her own right.
From the SOULS OF YOUR FEET EXACTLY 💯💯💯🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
My favorite rock&blues song ever!
so happy to get to see you hearing Janis for the first time! my reaction, many, many years ago, was pretty much the same. she was an amazing talent and is a measure by which i judge other singers. she did not hold back when she sang.
That was Mama Cass (reacting) to a star being born.
You must listen to her cover of summertime. Ohhhhh maaannn. Sooooo goooood
Was there at that show. Her voice felt like thunder hitting your chest . It wonderful to see she lives on.
Janis is straight up legit. The real deal
As a teen my Gf's LOVED HER! I didn't get it till much later being into my 80's hair bands.. Even though I loved my Jim Morrison.. But now.. OMG no one like her
Oh man, I am SO looking forward to your reaction to this!!!! 💙💜💙
MASTERFUL!!! To much soul!!👽🛸💕
The lovely lady in the audience is the late Cass Elliott aka Mamma Cass, from the group Mamma's and the Pappas. A very successful 60s group. Cass also had her own solo career. Sadly she passed away in 1974 aged only 32.
This is one of my favourite live videos ever! Janis was on fire here, incredible performance. My favourite female singer
You'd love "Work Me Lord", Woodstock!
Janis is still my second number 1 female artist of all time!
(Mavis Staples shares that position!)
Van, I LOVED your reation to this one!!!
Nobody sang like Janis. I sure miss her
Man i remember when i was a little girl my mom use to listen to Janis. I love her music. You should react to Me and Bobby McGee, Take a little piece of my heart or Summertime.
I still get chills
That Lady is Mama Cass! Mamas and Papas. Great American band
Your analysis of her is so spot on!
