    Melisandre was probably more powerful at the Wall due to the high magic concentration from the Walls construction. It is said that the Children used their magic on the Wall......

      I will just add onto this thread since you said something I was about to anyway, kudos on that.
      So basically the children of the forest are not, in my opinion, confined to Westeross because of this:
      " foul concoction brewed from the nearby trees - until their lips turn blue, the better to frighten children." in regards to the warlocks of Quarth.
      "better to frighten children" of the forest in Essos would be my bet, a simple "we have conquered the childrens magic by taking the faces from the trees and drinking from its sap and leaves gives us power, the power to destroy the children" a message marked by their blue lips.
      If we take it that the children became one with the weirwoods after death, then to drink a concoction made from that trees sap and leaves is a sure fire method of taking its power for yourself, something which you can probably bet the children were not happy about but could not stop.
      The idea that greenseers are confined only to westeross forgets that patchface exists, that the quaif exists and decides without cause that a thing can only happen in one place and nowhere else without quantifying why in any way.
      The doom of valyria for example, was predicted/prophecised by the Targeryans that fled, predictions and prophecies happen all over and for that to be true you would need seers, maybe not green seers if that is specific to westeross weirwoods (though I doubt this due to maggie the frog being from Essos but fitting the green seer description very closely.
      Now I am not saying that Melisandre is definitively from Essos, but what I am saying is there was nothing in this video or any other that I have seen which would lead me to conclude she is from Westeross or that green seers can only be born in Westeross, whereas there are plenty of examples which indicate the opposite to be true.

    This sounds like a good theory for the books but I don't know how this will translate in the show. There hasn't been enough hints dropped in the show to make this a realistic conclusion for her, especially with only 6 episodes to gO. It be like 'Hey Davos and Jon, I'm a greenseer wildling who was kidnapped centuries ago. I've come back to die and give you my lucky magic...you're welcome'.

      Tony S so he gave Geoffrey, Euron and Ramsey redeeming qualities in the books? Because on the show there is nothing good about any of them. Cersei, Jaime, Tywin, Stannis, Robert, Caitlyn, High Sparrow... sure they had a little to a fair amount of good in them, but there are definitely some characters I feel are pure evil.

      @Graphique Jack you need to dig deeper on the show which a lot of you have refused to do. They did a great job w/ the entire show IMO. Ramsey was supposed to be sympathetic in the sense that he was a bastard who was always trying to please his father & his insecurities and natural propensity towards sociopathy turned him into the monster he was. He genuinely cared for Myranda, he was saddened by her death and telling Maester Wolkin to feed her to the hounds was him trying to act like he didn’t care. He was embarrassed the Maester saw him in a moment of vulnerability. He genuinely respected his father & when he killed him in the end he did it out of fear; he didn’t want his father lording the new baby over him and he was afraid his father would forget about him. When u look at Ramsey’s motivations & his entire character, he becomes somewhat sympathetic. His actions are motivated by insecurity & his sociopathic tendencies ( hes not a full blown sociopath bc they don’t feel like Ramsey does) make them severe. He is evil
      But that evil comes from a sympathetic place. Joeffry did genuinely care for Marjorie and although I don’t think she would have been able to temper his worst instincts, she would have made him a much better king to the common people. It was his mother who ruined him by doting on him and refusing to believe he was turning into a monster. She let that go unchecked. Waving at the door, being somewhat cool w/ Marjorie’s charitable acts, standing up to his mother & taking Marjories side ( something Tommen never did) were all supposed to be hints by the show runners that with the right guidance Jeoffrey could be tamed at least a little. Would he still torment Sansa, yes probably, and we saw that it didn’t change his disgusting actions towards Tyrion but she could have at least tamed him to the point to where the ppl wouldn’t be starving & she had a much better chance with him than with Tommen at getting Cersei out of Kings Landing bc Joeffey didn’t let his mother disrespect his wife like that. He shut her down every time she tired which was a redeeming quality in him. It was Tommen’s inability to stand up to his mother than got his wife killed. That wouldn’t have happened on Joeffrey’s watch & Joeffrey would have put the High Sparrow down right away. Euron does respect Yara. That’s clear from the fact that he refuses to kill or torture her like he would have done with Theon. Not too many men respect strong women in this story & although it didn’t seem like it during the King’s Moor, he was trying to win a election and the best way to do that, as we saw with 46 and now with Bernie’s old as*, is to appeal to men’s misogyny. However when he was alone with her he didn’t hurt her, and he said he wanted to keep her alive for good company but it was really bc he respected her. He didn’t respect Theon at all bc he thought he was coward; and he knew yara wasn’t a coward. He’s also loyal which is more than what most of these lords and ladies can say. He went all the way to Essos & had a big army on that long trip back and could have convinced them to fight for him bc they would have had no choice as they were at his mercy on his ships, and Cersei has many redeeming qualities as a mother

    Ok... wouldn’t it be funny if Melisanldre was the. Original Nissa Nissa. We’ve seen characters bought back from death, We also know that She has certain powers. We all keep speculating about her seeking her death in Westeros, maybe her role is to be Nissa Nissa again, for the sake of defeating the darkness (??). Also the rubies are most definitely a source of power/magic. Considering this, with the variety of things Melisandre can do with her ruby, imagine the all those rubies set into the armour of Rheagar and events at the Battle of the Trident... mmmm interesting concepts, quite possibly tinfoil assumptions!!😂😂

      Jessie Rankin she could still be Nissa Nissa. I actually think the first Nissa Nissa was a Child of The Forrest. The word Nisse actually means garden nome, I did a video on this. On how the Nisse have all the characteristics of the COTF and how they are even considered shape shifters!! So her sacrifice could be a Nissa Nissa like sacrifice and if she has Greenseer blood of COTF blood! History would repeat and come around full circle!

    When the Night King declined a one-on-one fight with Jon it reminded me of when Ramsey Bolton old Jon that he may beat him in single combat but he knows his army will beat Jon's army. I bet the NK was thinking the same thing. Especially since he saw Jon kill a WW at Hardhome.

  • @jawjagrrl
    @jawjagrrl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    She doesn't seem so tied in with the other priestesses of R'hllor, who are all about Dany. I've been thinking for awhile that it's perhaps her visions are actually derived from greensight. Who knows, maybe she is a Bastard of Bloodraven and a wildling woman at Hardhome. I've also heard some theorize she is the child of Bloodraven and Shiera Seastar.

    • @GrayArea
      @GrayArea  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jawjagrrl I was reading some So Spake Martin and GRRM says that Melisandre is acting on her own accord. She wasn’t sent to seek out Stannis. She did it on her own.. and has her own motives which I thought was intense, honestly. Moqorro and the other red priests are dispatched but Melisandre didn’t come to Westeros that way. I’ve heard the Shiera+BR theory as well.. but I actually think Melisandre is to old to be their kid. Years beyond count seems like a really old long time. If she was B+S=M she would be what 60? 80 at the most. I don’t think that’s old enough.

    Ok... theory time from the S8e3... We all saw Melissandra take off the broach, walk off and die... but I think I saw her "dust" (a la Avengers). Presuming others saw that too, I submit for thought that Mel was actually a Night Queen, a converted person like Benjen Stark. She couldn't die because of the magic from the NK, but wasn't bound to his will like the rest of the Others. She became a follower of the Lord of Light knowing that she would need that power if she ever wanted to help stop her ex-lover. How else did she get by the Army of the Dead without getting waxed to get to the front door in this episode?

    As usual you analysis is great, and very helpful to us non-book readers! Melisandre has been wrong with deadly results, and yet the savior of Jon, so she now needs to get some redemption. Her origins are intriguing and it’s great to hear more information on this. Her powers will be useful in the coming war, but what will she do beyond her own sacrifice ? Thank you Gray for giving us juice to survive the Long Night!!

      I think she will try to access the Weirwood net and interfere with the NK that way. The NK seems to be connected to the Weirwood net, which is how he interferes with Bran, Maybe Melisandre can do the same.

      Read an insightful comment recently (perhaps, under one of Grey Areas’ videos or Alt Shift X) theorizing that the ultimate way to transform the Night King and nullify his powers will be during a fiery final showdown with the Night King ending in engulfing the weirwood network in flames. Destroying it completely.
      After listening to Grey Areas’ video and theories, Melisandre’s role (and that of her army of fire priests and priestesses) seems like a dynamic and tremendous visual conflagration of the weirwood network and the destruction of the Old God’s power. I cannot imagine Bran surviving this showdown and remaining in his physical form.
      We’ll soon find out!

    The magic at the wall... It's the same reason the Night King is so active as well... The birth of Dragon's is the ANSWER! Remember when Danny was in Quathe is it called? the House of the Undying... the Warlock said he magic had died out, But when the Dragon's were born it was renewed! He also said, that the magic was greater when they were in each other's company! This is a major foreshadowing! The existence of the Dragon's has made what was impossible: POSSIBLE! But this is every bit Danny's magic as well!

      That's the rub about dreams, legends, lore, old stories. They ma have originally been based of actual facts or events - but being passed down over so many generations form old nannies to young kids, over and over again... so much gets embellished, confused, added and subtracted. So much gets muddled, so I can't take any of them as fact. But there are kernels of truth in them all. So maybe 3 heroes - each playing their own roles and making their own sacrifices all together are required. We will see how it plays out.

    This is quite founded evidence you’ve accumulated. I admit, I didn’t make the connection between Mel and Ghost of High Heart and Hard Home, and while all of this does sound legit and I don’t doubt that it is and/or could be.... BUT, what about the similarly striking description of Melisandre and Sheira Sea Star both? The only difference between the two are the colors. If she did indeed come from Hard Home and we know that Bloodraven has been beyond the wall a LONG time. And we also know that Sheira and Brynden Rivers (aka Bloodraven) we’re lovers (aside from being siblings...) and another huge similarity is that some woman called out her name in that memory. Melisandre didn’t call out her own name, that’d be silly. But if it were her own mother...? We know what love does to these people. Bloodraven loved Sheira and she continually slept with others because his anger and jealousy amused her. He could’ve done something to separate the mother of his child he loved so she endure the same heartache he did. And he probably is saddened by it deeply even though he could’ve done so out of jealous rage.
    Anyway, there are just too many similarities between all three of them. And her age could also coincide with Bloodraven and Sheira’s timeline. Sheira was a master of dark arts and witchcraft as well...

    Yeah , she ain't always accurate , but her God is real. You bring guys back from the dead , you're real. I've had a cockeyed notion that it's Benjin - whom we did not see die - who kills the Night King, but Mellisandre the crone could pass for a wight , and could get close enough. That would be a worthy sacrifice. But spilling her blood at the weirwood tree , re-animating it so Bran can take his place among it's roots would be cool , too. That long moment with Arya - who could not possibly be KIng- makes one think she is looking for Bran as well.

    I am way behind on the series and haven't read the books, but i think that Melisandre was the pale white lady at the wall that the 13th commander of the Night's watch came across... Not a female white walker, but a witch of the woods... The "first men" were the more advanced men of Essos or whatever and the wildlings were human men and women that already lived in Westeros amongst the children of the forest that learned their culture and ways of life... And magic. She was a fledgling witch then... But all great sorcerers and sorceresses are reborn many times... Melisandre is her latest incarnation and she had power at the wall because she was tapping into some of her own natural powers... She is the GOT Lilith in a sense. Idk... I enjoy the unwritten backstory of things and that's just one theory... Maybe I'm far off... Lmk what you think

    Within the world of Fire and Ice, magic is a source to gain power different “disciplines” if you want to think of them that way a magic user must dedicate themselves to a god.
    There seems to be several different types of magic, blood magic, shadow magic, fire magic, ice magic, water magic, illusion, air, etc etc..
    Some are better at offense some at defense others at divination.
    Fire magic linked to shadow magic is a great example of two types of magic helping to support each other.
    I think Melisandre was thinking about her shadow magic and how she was the best at it, she acts like a shadow as shadows don’t need to eat or sleep or breath.... or age.
    Melisandre uses illusion magic in her necklace that gives her her youthful looks.
    Her flame magic is secondary to her shadow magic, she doesn’t seem to see things in the flames very well.
    Her green seer abilities are what binds all magic. The Wearwood trees are all linked, the Wall is magically bound, and helps to draw more of the magic that the land provides, all forms of magic users would find the focus at the Wall to their advantage.
    These are my thoughts.
    I did however love this video.

    Gray , why wouldn't the children be able to be born anywhere on Planetos trees can grow. By that same token why must Shadowbinders or anyone who has an in-born power potential be strickly moored in one not so special place versus another. Now, a different tale is told over where one acquires training and fully potentializes.

    I do believe that Mellisandra is pivotal to the entire prophecy of "the Prince who will come," . She was completely thrown off because Jon was hidden and well hidden. Who could see a Stark protecting the Targaryen and he did this almost immediately after his Father and brother were so brutally murdered by an evil MAD king? His devotion to his sister and the pack was unlimited! Mellisandra has been seeking the one with the right blood. Dany may be ice and fire but, not of the Kings of winter. This is all blood magic. Only death pays for life. D.

  • @molson9059
    @molson9059 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    A greenseer can raise the dead as well, so she could still save Jon in the books if your theory is correct. But her cryptic statements about the fire living within her just won’t let me go of the Nissa Nissa theory. Therefore I propose that Bran will gain no strength from Melisandre but Jon Snow instead will reap the benefits of any sacrifice she might have to make. However her greenseer abilities could allow her to directly block or cut off the Night Kings influence over the rest of the dead leaving him alone and defenseless. The ghost of high heart thing is definitely a show amalgamation of two characters just as many others on the show for sure. But weather or not it plays a bearing on the books still remains to be seen. GRRM tells us that they are two very different stories in his mind at this point, but he seems confused when he speaks sometimes so who knows if he is just trolling us or trying to straight mislead us all together. Your ideas are complete and thoughtful as usual which makes you one of the best at what you do, keep em coming.

    • @nickdentoom1173
      @nickdentoom1173 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Eldrik
      That is not correct. A Greenseer cannot raise the death, neither did Mel save Jon, Davos did. Thoros of Myr explicitly stated that he didn't bring back Beric, but R'hollor did because Thoros didn't want Beric too die. Davos didn't want Jon too die.
      Also: The statement about a fire living within in, is also made towards several other characters, since it means you have a burning passion for something/someone in your heart and that you want to do something about it.

    Thank you for the video GrayArea. Amazing as always. I wonder about Melisandre. She cleared out most of the top families in Westeros? Why did all these people have to die? After all the deaths she says in the show she has bought ice and fire together. Jon and Danny. I wonder why she help wipe out so many people? These people could have fought in the war to come. What is her true motive? She serves the lord of light. I ask who does she really serve? I have to wonder. Is she really on the side of the living?
    Thank you 🙏 ❤️ have a great day

      AntiqueGamer I think she is on the side of the living. There is an interesting quote from GRRM where he is talking about eye color, he said he didn’t like that people with brown eyes were always portrayed as normal and then the doers of great deeds always had blue or hazel eyes. And he said he was guilty of this with both Daenerys and Melisandre. So this quote kind of makes me think she will do something great! www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/Entry/4142

    • @ajrieder27
      @ajrieder27 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I I really hope she does a great deed and helps to save Westeros on the show. No one has a video questioning her real motives. Asking who she really serves. She could be misunderstood. If she is a double agent that would be one really cool plot twist. I will do some more reading. Thank you for the link and most of thank you for getting us through the long night. I await your next upload.

      Or maybe its Karma biting in the ass everyone who had a hand in the Rebellion. Think abt it, Rhaegar was preparing for the Long Night, and then these fuckers ruined everything, now the NK is too powerful and the realm divided. Thanks a lot Ned Stark, Lyanna was right all along. If only u had taken ur sisters side.
      Maybe Melissandre was meant to clean Westeros from the Baratheon filth that have power cuz they got lucky years ago by killing a green prince and his 2 babies, so that when the real rulers come, their path is mostly free to focus on the real enemy. Who knows maybe the Lord of Light is pissed abt the Targaryen slaughter. Rhaegar belived in that damned prophecy, he doesnt strike me as a beliver in the 7, but the Red god.
      All the shit that has happened to both Dany and Jon, I mean he charged at Ramsay under a shower of arrows, still alive, all the enemies Dany has faced so far, still alive, yet the "Bananis" cant win shit even with magic.
      Gods are vicious.
      Renly sat at Roberts table and said "Dany and her baby have to die for us to keep our power" gets killed by a baby demon. Stannis ....dont even get me started on that dirtbag. That same fleet he took to Dragonstone 2 decades ago to kill pregnant Rhaella, burned with Aerys' wildfire. KARMA. Death by fire is the purest death.
      The Red Wedding, the fucking Tullys, the blood of Hoster who benefited the most from the Rebellion, where are they now?? Ppl forget both Catelyn and Cersei benefited from the rebellion, both power hungry over a chair that doesnt belong to either fish or cat, in the end both lived long enough to watch their children die, they suffered just like Ellia and Queen Rhaella did when their kids died.
      The way I see it, the Lord used her to clean the path for Jon and Dany. All whats left is Cersei, far in the south. and Euron who is not that strong in land. Shes all abt sacrificing kingsblood to win, yet the blood of Aegon T is right in front of her, she feels the need to protect him and warns him abt daggers. Just saying

What’s interesting is in her chapter she mentions 1000 eyes see her with a wolf at his side. Obvious Blood Raven connection. How else would she have a connection to Blood Raven as a Red Priestess. Being a greenseer would make this connection, but I think the connection is deeper with those two. Is the fire she feel inside R’hllor or Bloodraven? Anyone know what happened to Shiera Seastar? If Melisandre isn’t her, Melisandre is definitely someone Bloodraven met North of the wall.
