Not to scare people away from orthotics, but I was told I needed them at like 14. Wore them for 7 years without question. Then suddenly realized my feet were COMPLETELY screwed up. They were twisted. If my heel was neutral, my big toe was almost an inch off the ground. I could even use my strength to bend my foot back even momentarily. Bones had moved. Luckily, I threw out the orthotics and got zero drop shoes with a wide toe box. 3 years later, my feet are like 80% back to normal and I have SO much more stability and balance. I'd caution against orthotics use for LONG periods without at least checking in and making sure your body isn't adjusting to bad habits.

To those who also have a flat arch, some cases are more severe than others, I’ve been wearing fiberglass arch support since I was seven years old. Which leads to pain when walking for long. The only thing that helped are insoles with an arch or shoes that support my ankle.

After plantar fasciitis developed from conventional footwear, I was forced to transition to barefoot shoes. It was long and hard, but now my arch muscles are much thicker and stronger. In response to the comments below, here's some critical tips I learned:
I found it safest to use barefoot shoes at first as an exerciser, and carry my conventional shoes with me to immediately switch back to as soon as I felt pain. I was shocked at how weak my arches and foot fat pads were, both got significantly injured as I tried to transition too quickly. Bone bruising was also a problem on flat pavement, and took a long time to heal and adapt. I underestimated the transition time. In retrospect, I would use the above method over a period of at least a couple of years to be safe.
Also, I did have to use orthotics as a crutch to first heal the worst stages of the plantar faciitis, but for sure, they should only be considered a temporary crutch, not a long term dependency. The human foot is not flawed, just misunderstood and poorly adapted to today's shoes and hard flat surfaces.

another way to achieve a properly controlled arch is while walking barefoot around the house for example. try to focus on putting slightly more weight to the outside edge of your feet while still using your big toe for pushing off and stability in walking and standing. i have high arches but for some time i had weakness in my arches, i was informed by a professional to try this exercise over time to improve my feet and now it’s a permanent thing, it allowed me to work back up the strength in my arches through proper use. i will say though, it takes focus when first starting out😂

As a chiropractor, I work on the bones of the feet in addition to the spine and rest of the lower extremities with adjustments. I then have patients work on relaxing the plantar fascia and then they are instructed to have more barefoot time. I also encourage as many as will listen to consider barefoot shoes as well. It won’t be a good fit for everyone all the time but at least some of the time we can try more foot shaped shoes. Foot orthotics can be a good tool to use as a short term crutch to decrease pain but it does not fix the underlying problem. I was given foot orthotics by 8th grade and chiropractic and better orthotics helped my feet. As I continued to improve my health, I stopped wearing orthotics, did all my treadmill sprints barefoot, and then moved to wearing barefoot shoes. I’m on year 3 of barefoot shoes and won’t go back. (As others repeatedly say, please give yourself lots of time and grace as you transition to barefoot shoes to prevent injury.)

Pretty sure shoe "support" is the main cause of foot modern problems in the first place.
The "support" things in the shoe basically take over the role of the foots muscles and ligaments/tendons or whatever, then they just stop working properly because their job is being done for them already, leading to a fucked up foot.

Sometimes it’s better to fight the cause and not the symptoms. Also make sure your shoes allow you to move your toes freely, especially for the kids otherwise they develop annoying problems that they’ll have to fix themselves. The surgery on my other foot will be around September and after that i will have to wait around 3-4 months to fully recover. After that i will be able to run and jump freely. I highly suggest doing a surgery because if not treated, your feet will get worse.

I suffered from flat feet few years ago and was told to wear supportive padding but they only made my feet weaker and I suffered to find shoes where the pad fit. Years later someone noticed my feet in the gym and told me to work on my squat barefoot to help with flat feet problem. I went back home that day and watched some youtube videos, ended up on finding simple yet effective methods to strengthen my feet arches and within 2 weeks I was able to fix this problem. My message is, unfortunately, many healthcare providers only share what they’ve known years ago without trying to expand on their knowledgeable. I think with the internet now, as simple and silly as it may sound, one could find almost all the answers.

I live in Europe and surgeries in my country aren't that expensive. The main reason I don't want surgery is because it's scary to me lol. So I hope my bunions don't get worse. I work at a running specialty store and I fit people for shoes constantly. This is a common issue that occurs mostly when people wear the wrong size shoes. Especially since most people that need a wide shoe don’t get them and that’s the main issue behind peoples feet being manipulated by the shape of the shoe. Moral of the story: get fitted correctly when buying shoes because you don’t need a wide toe-box shoe but they can definitely help.

But what was even worse was that everyone was telling me to wear shoes with arches. I bought these really expensive $120 shoes with built in arches and every time I wore them, My feet would hurt so bad. I much preferred wearing my $30 sketchers, which people said were bad for me. And unfortunately, they did wear out in 6 months. But I loved them, because they didn’t have any support, which meant nothing was in the way from my feet spreading out like they needed to. I have a pretty similar problem and when I was wearing orthotics in Kinder garden, pretty common in kindergarten for a lot of kids, my feet would sleep in (idk if that‘s the right term) and I couldn‘t walk in them. I‘m glad I found this video that explained this to me a little bit since I didn‘t understand it as a child

That’s exactly why there were lawsuits against those “exercise shoes” that had the “cloud soles” or some thing. They were designed to make working out easier, but people were getting a lot of injuries because it would make your ankles so weak.

Your toes won't go back just from wearing wider toe boxes!
Ive been sleeping with silicon toe separators (about 5 euro from Amazon) for about a year and you can definitely notice a difference!
I swopped to wide fitting shoes years ago and that in itself didn't change the angle of my toe but sleeping with the separators did! 😊

Sandals, our ancestors wore them for millennia. Great for spreading out the toes. I don't usually wear them all day, but Skechers Extra Wide seems to be big enough too.

Both of my arches actually fell when I was in the military. It was suggested that I could get arch reconstruction surgery, but it wasn't a guarantee to last since I was going to continue to do all the things that caused my arches to fall in the first place. I was given orthodontics with limitations on when to wear them (like on long ruck marches, but not for every day), and exercises to perform barefoot to strengthen my feet and ankles. I did end up needing foot surgery, but not for my arches. I've been out of the military for about 10 years now, and I've been able to rebuild some of the arch back, but I've also been through 4 pregnancies, so I've had to start over a few times.

I’m one of the ones that genuinely need orthotics and have to limit narrow toed shoes. I’ve got extremely narrow feet but in comparison my forefeet are broad, flexible flat feet (very hypermobile) and weak/hypermobile ankles (I won’t mention the rest of my dysfunctional lower limbs). Orthotics have been incredible and now I have these wrap ankle supports that also support the arch when you don’t have shoes on! I feel like an animated character with them on as it almost feels like it floating!

I agree with this video, even though I did wear orthotics for a while. Most of the time I am sockfooted or barefooted. Wearing shoes that squeeze your toes together are definitely bad for your feet, and wearing high heels is adding injury to insult.
The Barefoot Book by Daniel Howell is very good on this topic.

Been telling this to people for years but they wont believe me. Like use shoes that are roomy yet supportive, but also support you natural foot shape. I've been wearing "flat"/skate shoes since a kid and my feet have an almost perfect arch due to always activating my foot muscles instead of letting my feet rest without supports (somewhat same concept as having good poster - have bad poster, then you won't stand up or sit straight without discomfort for example)

Here's an even better hot take: shoes are bad for our feet in general. It crams our feet and doesn't allow us to be natural. It's nice not to where shoes amd let the feet toughen up.

I had the same problem. Now I’m wearing minimal shoes with big toeboxes, „barefoot“ shoes and barefoot walking at home etc.
My big toe is now spreading outwards on its own. The gab between my big toe to the next one is big enough to fit my pointing finger inside.
And the benefits are defiantly huge. Less knee pain/ hip pain and lower back pain. Better posture.
And somehow mit mobility doing squats 🙌

OMG. Thanks. Plus I learned that the structure of how I was walking most of my life contributed to it and didn’t engage the correct foot and leg muscles. I would roll out on the outside of my foot. Not using the big toe. When I started walking correctly and engaging the large toes I saw huge difference in shoe wear and my leg muscles.

I moved to Florida 26 years ago and haven’t worn closed-toe shoes (no narrow shoes either) ever since. My toes have plenty of space to spread out and I go barefoot as often as possible and I still have completely flat feet. It’s not a problem. And if it’s not a problem for me, I don’t feel like I should try to fix it. If a doctor told me it was causing problems with something in the rest of my body, I might be more inclined to “fix” a problem that I don’t feel exists right now.
I have a daughter who wears narrow shoes and has wide feet. Now she’s got bunions and she’s only 18 years old. It’s frustrating for me because she doesn’t want to listen to anyone telling her that she needs to vary her selection of shoes more often.
