Shadowlands has completely changed World of Warcraft lore. Long ago, in the days of Vanilla, we thought of the Titans as the ultimate power in the universe. That is far from the truth. Now, we know there was another group: The First Ones. They created the structure of the Shadowlands as we know it, and even though it's early days, the hints and teases are stacking up! This truly is a new era of World of Warcraft lore.

It's important to mention that Netflix and a lot of companies will ban your account for using a VPN since it bypasses location/regional restrictions. Some companies even fine you, after banning you for using them now. They're tired of getting sued by companies because VPN let a user bypass regional locking.

    Hello everyone!
It's been milling around ion my head for a while and I need to put it out there, for others to look at it.
Over several expansions we have seen the Legion use souls to power their tech.
The Dark Portal, opened using the souls of thousands, literally.
Gul'dan was sucking souls from people around him and from nature to power his magic.
Old Gods were supposed to consume the soul of Azeroth, however, there's no actual evidence of them using souls as batteries.
The Legion has actual soul forges, mysterious engines that use souls like coal, producing power of some kind to be used by mysterious tech.
In fact, these Legion soul forges are maybe a cruder version of the engine of death here in Shadowlands. It sure sound rather similar.
To me, Oribos looks a lot like a selection device, like a dam on a river. You see, it selects souls as they follow their natural flow, sending some to each realm of the Shadowlands, and the ones deemed not useful get dumped into the maw, but for what purpose?
We see in Torghast that souls are used as raw materials for everything. Weapons, armor, you name it.
We see in Maldraxxus souls being used to inhabit constructs of flesh and bone to be used as soldiers, seen that one with the scourge before, but not in this great detail. Also, thinking that's how Sylvanas got recruited. She voided a living paladin's body of the soul and inhabited it with the soul of Nathanos.
We see souls being reborn in Ardenweald, so that's how souls go back to the realms of the living, sort of a feed back loop.
Bastion and Revendreth so far make little sense to me.
Bastion is supposed to ferry souls, therefore they don't have a feedback loop. However, that makes it that there should be a lot of Kyrion doing nothing in Bastion, or there should be a way to somehow deplete their population as well, that we haven't seen so far. Well except from them turning black and joining the maw.
Revendreth is even more nonsensical. Here's a whole realm full of really high castles, where souls get purged of certain "bad" traits, sort of a purgatory, before being accepted into the ranks of the venthyr, if they choose so, or go somewhere else? Well the machine is broken so maybe that's why we haven't seen it.
However, they're the only ones that seem to have any kind of economy. Also, quite funny how all venthys seem so prideful while put in charge of purging souls of mostly pride before accepting them into their ranks.
But all this is just a selector mechanism, sorting souls for some unclear purpose. It seems the power production of this engine is the Maw. That's where the fuel ends up and is being used. You can see this by the shape of the Eternal city itself. souls flowing from the top, from life, trough the city like a funnel, like a car's distributor, and into the maw straight down.
Where are the souls coming from? How are they being produced? What is all this powering? Where should all that this engine produces be going, and why?
We know the Maw is producing a huge army for the Jailer, but that's not it's intended purpose for sure.
SO, what do you guys think?

How many Demon invasions could we have had between it got rinse and repeat and a crazy storytelling? We can't expect Azeroth by itself defeating the armies of Legion alone for several expansions in a row, the Legion needs to learn from the mistake. Add the fact that they are a universe level threat, it becomes ridiculous unless you start adding bigger fishes to aid you. Old Gods should not be developed yet, and when they will, they should not be developed much. By their definition (both in Blizzard and Lovecraft) they are the great unknown, the incomprehensible, larger than anything (figuratively). They need to be a half-arsed battle were you just pacify them again for some time, else the entire idea was cheap to begin with.
So what are we left with? We cannot and should not be able to truly beat old Gods, and we cannot do an infinite repeat of defeating Legion invasions. We cannot defeat Legion once and for all either, as that would mean beating Sargeras, and it would be cheap and impossible in a restricted lore where he was the greater threat. We needed those titans to aid us, we needed the Argus story line to somehow give us a boss.. and we are already off the charts by your standards... but it doesn't stop here. What comes after?
The Black Empire? Yet another time travelling expansion?
      Another Lich King menace?
      KT comes back?
      Another hero becomes twisted?
      More faction wars?
and what are the motivations for those things even in the restricted lore? We can't have more Horde/Alliance wars without a bigger storyline. The Alliance is no longer led by an old guard of racist xenophobic cretins, and the Horde is no longer influenced by demon blood or bloodthirsty. Garrosh Hellscream was the biggest mistake of the game, and turning Sylvanas for the sake of having another baddie (even if the larger story with the Jailer was good, and the burning of Teldrassil and Lordearon were promising*1)
Add to that the fact that the Alliance players are just impossible, and we get a situation where if there are faction wars, we OUGHT to have the Horde the bad guys. Can't have the Alliance stain their faux-morality robes.
I personally don't like the bigger fishes in the sense that we, the glorified NPCs of the Azeroth, get to beat them.. but lore wise, I see no problem with them expanding the cosmos. I'd very much like to turn their eyes back on Vanilla regions for a turn, but would like to also continue this new lore, and to be honest, storywise, there is nothing less to do.. Warcraft restricted us to Old Gods, Sargeras, and Naga, and even if it makes sense to expand (ie. Titans, Elune, something beyond Titans, Loa, etc), there will be people who complain for the sake of complaining.
*1 in the sense that now the DEVS need to build a better city for each

@@raelur1651 wow your answer was quite dedicated i won't be able to write a worthy reply. Well for me the story writing got worse after cata. I think we could have had a naga exp, an argus exp where we beat Kil jaeden, a black empire exp, no time travel exp cuz I don't like time travels. And lastly a twisting nether exp. Every story needs to come to an end and by adding things later on that has hardly been established earlier, well that's like adding twigs to a fading fire.
I haven't played SL so I don't reaööy know what its about, but that Jailor dude looks so boooooooring and ugly. And when it comes to Titans or Elune, some things are just better of being a mystery. • @ripper4eto

They have really f'ed up the lore in my opinion. They went for, to say it, vertical evolution of events and characters and look at the reasult. From kindgoms, champions, factions, dragons, magic to some absurd cosmic scenarios, omnipotent beings and even more omnipotent beings, that no longer make sense for the WoW universe. They have cornered themselves with that path of development and will corner themselves even more. There is no more room for development up. And it's not like they can go down now because they have set the expectations for ever more complex headway. I mean the average player toon is now an ant to ants, fighting ludicrous, impossible to beat beings, and yet somehow ends victorious, and the ways that happens are just so unrealistic, and so unsatisfying, so unnatural. You can see it in fanbase reactions. The game feels completely distant from what WoW used to represent as an idea. The lore is inconsistent, vague mishmash. It's weak.
Now what they should have done, in my opinion, is more of a horizontal development. That would have kept the game close to its theme, at the same time introducing new, unique, intriguing, endless content, new realistic characters, exciting figures of the caliber of Arthas, Illidan, Gul'dan etc. Characters people can associate with - one is a human paladin who bacame a dk, well I'm a human paladin, one is an orcish warlock and I'm a warlock, maybe my toon can become one of those great names. Look at the characters now...milking Sylvannas, a character that should have been long gone with a completely inconsistent evolution - good to evil, to good, to evil, emotional, to insensitive, to emotional. Jailer who's only exciting with how supposedly powerful he is, and has no charisma whatsoever. Well, I'll give him that, there is some mystery around him. Beings in Shadowlands that make no sense and are out of place. Anduin looks like the only decent character but he's so genlte, doesn't carry the epicness, doesn't spark excitement, yet. WoW enthusiasts don't like devoid of traits, pale characters. They want characters with strong presence. That's why people liked 'Wrath of the Lich King' from a lore standpoint. It made sense, it was realistic, it was associative, it was achievable. If they had gone with horizontal development we could have seen expansions carrying the spirit of WoW. Examples that come to my mind are 'Legacy of Broxigar', 'Hanging Gardens of Elune', 'Menace from the Depths', 'No Light for Paladins', 'The lost Tribe/Faction'. All can introduce exceptional characters. I'm sure many will come with even better ideas. I think MoP and WoD had some of that, or had the chance to make it happen, but pandas, all that time traveling thing, poor inconsistent character development, just ruined the story. That's how I see things, if other share same opinion or different one, feel free to comment.

On top of what you said, every time Blizzard tried to overexplain things, it horribly backfired on them sooner or later because their storytelling lacks the continuity and coherence to keep everything in check. Actually, only a few storytellers have ever achieved something like that and Blizzard storytelling certainly isn't able to pull that off. Which doesn't mean that I don't like the stories, that WoW has in store - I actually do like them a lot. We know that like always we won't really get any conclusions on such a deep stellar scale. But i wonder if the Jailer might be trying to stop death from existing at all, and that death as a concept was brought to life by some sentient creatures that found a way to redirect all the anime in souls of physically destroyed beings, that would normally be redirected to another life in the physical universe as a trade of for living of this lifeforce the souls get to spend the rest of their time in places that fit their life.

All of the Lovecraft shit mostly comes from the Void cosmic force anyway
