EASY SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE ~ PERFECT FOR CUT OUT COOKIES

  • This recipe makes a simple but versatile vanilla sugar cookie with only a few ingredients and no fancy techniques. The dough is easy to work with, you'll be able to roll & cut with ease and they are bound to be the perfect 'go to' cookie recipe for any holiday cookies 👌💖
    This recipe requires chilling your dough, and yes I know, chilling is a pain....BUT rest assured that your patience will be paid off afterwards. I found chilling my cookie dough before and after cutting really helps to prevent spreading during baking. It also makes your dough very easy to manage when it comes time to roll it out and to cut out with perfect defined edges....so trust me when I tell you that it is well worth the wait! 😋👍💖
    📌NOTE: makes approx 2 dozen of cookies (depending on cutter sizes)
    💠 INGREDIENTS:
    175 grams icing sugar/powdered sugar [US Conversion: 1 ½ Cups]
    225 grams salted butter (room temperature) [US Conversion: 2 Sticks or 1 Cup]
    1 egg (room temperature)
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or any flavour your prefer)
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    420 grams all-purpose flour [US Conversion: 3 ¼ Cups]
    💠 INSTRUCTIONS:
    ▪ Cream together butter and icing sugar.
    ▪ Add eggs and vanilla extract and mix well.
    ▪ Sift together flour & baking powder, add to the mixture little by little until well incorporated.
    ▪ Wait approximately 30 - 60 mins before working with the dough as it will firm up slightly.
    ▪ Roll the dough between baking paper and put it into the fridge for a few hours this will help prevent spreading. When the dough is a bit firmer, take it out of the fridge and cut into desired shapes (lightly dust with flour if necessary).
    ▪ Place the cut out cookie dough into a baking tray then put it into the fridge again for another 1-2 hours, this will also help prevent spreading.
    ▪ Bake cookies at 180° Celsius for approx 10-12 minutes (times may vary slightly depending on your oven). Note: Each oven is different, I would recommend you get to know your oven and adjust the time accordingly.
    📌 USEFUL TIPS for making perfect sugar cookies:
    🔸 Ensure that you ALWAYS use room temperature butter, in the video i have shown you how to check if your butter have reached the correct room temperature, I can't stress enough on how important this is! Test your butter by pressing it, they should give slightly but it should still hold its shape. If you use butter that have melted too much and too soft you will end up with a dough that is too soft and hard to work with.
    🔹 When its time to cut your cookie dough, make sure to keep your cuts as close together to get as many cookies out of your dough as possible. I usually divide my dough into half before rolling them (you would have seen this in my video) and when it comes to re-rolling your scraps after your first cut, I usually add the second half from my un-rolled dough with the scraps and knead them together, then re-roll and cut again.
    🔸 Chill your dough if you want a perfect cut out cookies with define edges. I can't tell you how much chilling really helps my dough to retain they shape and prevent spreading, so for those of you who are impatient out there....if you want perfect cut out cookies I'm afraid you will have to wait and practice being patient LOL

    I’m so glad to see you use REAL BUTTER ,it makes a difference. However, I am surprised you don’t have any almond extract in your cookie. I’ve found that it works well with and enhances the flavor in the cookie. The only time I don’t use it is when I know someone has a nut allergy. In that case I will usually add another flavor besides vanilla. The reason I do this is because the royal icing doesn’t have much flavor. SoI will usually add nice flavor to the cookie or the icing. I even add earl gray tea, orange or rose water, or champagne flavoring. It makes keeps people scratching their heads wondering what’s in it, but craving more. The problem with flavorings is that you need to be careful with how much you add. Adding too much can make your cookies taste like a bottle of perfume🤣😂😆. The best way to add flavor but play it safe is to add lemon or orange zest to your cookies. It adds and interesting little hint of flavor people love.
    What other flavors do you suggest? Do you have a chocolate sugar cookie recipe? If so I’d love to see it. Another GREAT video😁👍

      @CookieliciousNZ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Lori-Jean, this recipe will create a nice soft cookie, my family doesn't like the crispy ones so I always try to make delicious soft cookies for them as the royal icing on top provides that crunchy elements needed for the cookie, hope that helps 😉💖👍

    • @85HannaH19
      @85HannaH19 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quick side question, could you bake for a few mins longer to crunch them up a bit?, Or is the icing enough to get that?, I'm a very novice baker, and for the life of me I've tried making sugar cookies on and off for years, with horrible results, I'm trying yours as they look the nicest I've seen , waiting the 30 mins in bowl wrapped cling film, dough tastes amazing raw and looks just like yours so far
      So hope I can do it as I've got so many cookie cutters that I never get to use 😂😂

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey sweetie, you can try baking the cookies a bit longer if you like crispier cookies...I would suggest keeping watch and see if you can spot the edges browning out then I would take them out of the oven and let them continue to bake a bit further on the baking sheet outside of the oven. Bear in mind that the royal icing will also give it a bit more crunch and they are so yummy together once you have finished the who process of baking and decorating 😁😋 I'm really hopeful that you'll get a really nice result with your cookies! You can do this! I have full confidence in you! 👍😊 let me know how you go...I'm rooting for you from all the way in New Zealand LOL 😄😍🙌

    Is it ok if I put my dough into the refrigerator overnight and then bake it the next morning?
    The recipe is amazing! I loved the fact that you actually described how it's suppose to feel after you mix all the ingredients in. Thank you so much! My dough looks great right now but it is quite hard. Should I wait for 30 minutes at room temperature before baking them? Again thank you for this recipe, I hope that this turns out great! 😁🤩👍🏻

      Hey sweetie, I dont wait until the dough goes into room temperature...in fact i think the dough will retain the shape more if they are chilled and hard when they go into the oven. My cut-out cookie dough goes straight from the fridge into the oven to bake and they always come out amazing 😉👍💞

    Thank You so SO so much for this recipe. And for Your great work on this channel. My cookies came out picture perfect. I am so impressed by the result. No spreading whatsoever. Also it was easy to eyeball the baking time. Thank You for such a fabulous recipe. Also it was really helpful that You were showing the consistency, the thickness, etc. Your tips were so helpful as well. I never could bake a pretty cookie before. Your channel is awesome!!! ❤ 🍪🌸
    *Also a tip from me for Your subscribers - I made the dough, chilled for 2 hours, cut out the cookies and put them in the fridge overnight. Then I’m the morning I put them STRAIGHT in the oven on the same baking sheet they were on (so it was cold). And my cookies were perfect. This is for people like me, who didn’t have enough time to do it in one day and were wondering if chilling dough overnight would affect the result (it doesn’t)

    • @CookieliciousNZ

      I would store them in the freezer in flat layers (rolled the dough in between baking papers) inside an airtight container 😉👍

    • @priscillatorres3314
      @priscillatorres3314 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cookielicious NZ would this work even after the cookies were baked? If so how long would I need for them to defrost?

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What i usually do if I want to store the baked cookies inside the freezer I would heat-sealed them individually in a cellophane bag and them put them into airtight container, that would prevent the freezer burn on the cookies. The shelf life of the cookies are suspended while they are in the freezer. When you want to use the cookies, take them out of the container and let it thaw on your kitchen bench for about 30-60mins (do not open the cellophane bag until the cookies are completely defrosted), once they have thawed/defrosted you are ready to decorate 🙂

    • @CookieliciousNZ
      @CookieliciousNZ  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Yvette, apology for the delay in responding, life has gotten really hectic these days. I always make my cookies ahead of time, the day before is not ideal as you will be too rushed. I usually make my cookies a couple of weeks before the event, as the decorating process will take several days depending on the complexity of the design. For some tricky designs sometimes i like to wait overnight depending on my schedule so I like to take my time and get it done right.
      While you are waiting for the icing to dry during the decorating process, it will act as a protective layer on the cookie.The completed decorated cookies will last for a few weeks as i always heat-sealed them individually to maintain freshness. Or if you want to make them wayyy ahead of time you can always freeze them and take them out the day before the event to thaw out.

      Oh it's ok, I totally understand! This is my first go at making/decorating cookies, so I don't know all the rules that comes with this process. Thank you for letting me know.
