  • You may have seen a recent rise of keyboard content from this channel, and no, I'm not making a big switch (pun not intended), but instead, it piqued my interest when it comes to mechanical keyboards. Today, you'll find a ton of keyboard options out there made for both beginners and pros. Two of the most targeted markets as well are typists and gamers. Now, I play a lot of games, but I am not, in any way, a professional gamer. Like 90% of you out there, I play games to enjoy them, so having a gaming keyboard is not a paramount requirement. I am more of a typist as I spend most of my time working, just like the 90% of the world. However, the Lemokey L1 is apparently a gaming keyboard, and the first time I saw the images online, it looked very interesting, particularly because it has a knob-switch and four custom buttons on the left-hand side. But when I used it as my main keyboard, it was more of a gaming-looking keyboard with a feature set made for productivity. So, what gives? Why does this exist?

Im really not sure i agree with it "not being a gaming keyboard".
I can see where you're coming from - Its not like its hall effect switches.
But...A productivity keyboard without a numpad? Im not convinced chief.
Sure, the macro keys on the left and the pot can certainly be useful for productivity - The macros could be assigned to certain functions in a word processor, or for specific tools in video editing or illustration programs. The pot could even be mapped to allow you to scrub a timeline on a video, or zoom in and out, or increase/decrease brush size....But without a numpad you wont be putting in data or numbers very quickly at all, and neither will you be able to rebind them for shortcuts in productivity programs.
At the same time, those same keys and pot could also be mapped to specific macros for gaming. For example, in an MMO you might have a skill thats a bit inconvenient to reach with how you have it set up, like... alt + 7 for example. This would allow you to rebind it or another skill to one of the macro keys and free up a slot. That and, it does not have a numpad, which means more mouse space for shooters and such, games that typically prefer you having a low mouse DPI, and so benefit from the extra space on the right of the keyboard. Sure, most gamers aren't pros, but a lot of them are competetive.
Personally, im a gamer and most of my keyboards usecase is gaming but i have recently bought a Keychron Q5 Max which does have a numpad, but still is shorter than a typical keyboard. I did this because i cant live without a numpad, but i like having more mousing space compared to a 100% keyboard.
So....What exactly makes this "not" a gaming keyboard?
Its inability to sync the RGB to a game? What is it?
You already said it has layers, that seems like a good thing for a gaming keyboard as you can switch layers between your normal layer and a layer or two for your favourite games, with different macros and assignments for those extra keys on the left.

Currently looking for a new keyboard, hall effect seems like a one way street for gaming. It should become a staple feature and hopefully games start to support it natively for thumbstick-like controls

@@BankruptGreek yes and my point is that this keyboard is not hall effect. Many aren't. On that note however I have heard that hall effect switches are fairly unsatisfying to actually type on.

@@BankruptGreek I am a gamer who also use the same keyboard for work. This keyboard is perfect for me as there is no way I would be using HE keyboard for typing. Plus non HE keyboard has more switches options available.
