  • A necessary part of job retention is to query the customer as to any previous work done on the vehicle to avoid misunderstandings and wasted time. This is especially true when dealing with a 6R140 shift complaint or failure. Knowing if a valve body, solenoid, or computer has been worked on or replaced is imperative. Beyond typical reprogramming, solenoid strategy is also a key to success.

    I am so glad I am a retired trans builder 35yrs. My shift strategy today was working on my model airplane 😊,I can here the shop owner yelling from his office "got to go"

    Thank you! That answers my question...I just replaced the valve body in my 2011 F350. Just need to do exactly what you said. Just need to get the info off the valve body and upload it!

    Back when I had my 6.4 with the 5R110, the 6R140 was suppose to be such a better more power holding transmission...

    Always great information Mike! Whenever you’re performing main control/valve body overhauls, do you utilize a vacuum pump to check for potential leaks in the bores? Or, do you just ensure free movement of the valve(s) with adequate “Gravity Testing” procedures? How often do you see concerns with actual valves sticking in their bores? I don’t see many Ford valve bodies having inadequate movement, but the dealer does not require vacuum testing of the assemblies. Thanks!

      Valve body inspection today absolutely requires more than a flick of the valve. Even if a valve is nice and free in the bore is not an indication of a good valve body. Valve/bore wear has become commonplace on newer valve bodies and must be identified. To date, the best way is to vacuum check the oil passage. Due to how a valve will wear a bore renders visual inspection useless. Vacuum checking is an aftermarket thing not OEM. We are actually going to do a video concerning valve body inspection soon.

    If I where to replace just a solenoid (say E) and I use one with the same band number, does it require anything to be changed in the computer for just a solenoid replacement?

    There was a comment in the installation instructions that came with my valve body that says “remove the manual valve retaining tube before installing the control unit”. Does anybody know what that means? Because I don’t see it anywhere in any of the online videos that I’ve looked up other than in this video when the instructions are flashed up. I have no idea what it means. There was no tube I can see that needs to be removed before installation.

    My 6r140 shifts hard when cold but it's fine when it's warmed up, would this be the problem?

    I just got a 2019 f250 6.7 powerstroke with 34k miles on it about a week ago and when it upshifts it’s a little hard, it’s like a bump, just enough for you to noticed that it shifted if you weren’t thinking about it, and it’s not deleted, it’s bone stock. It also has a little bump in the 6 to 5 downshift. I was wondering if this is normal for a 6r140 or if I need to get the dealer to check it out. Or would a transmission relearn fix this?

      It should not shift hard at all, besides the od flare up from clutches binding during quick up then downshifting in a very short period, I would recommend checking your fluid level and if that checks out let the dealer take a look, as it should still be under warranty!

      @dirtbikeguy7969- i replace my transmission fluid 30k -40Km on my 17 f350 6.7 6r140 and last time I forgot it I started to feel harder shifts lagging/hanging shifts..i tow lots and drive hard (didn't buy it for Sunday driving) and as soon i replaced the transmission fluid and filter back to normal smooth almost unnoticed shifts in mid throttle high torque acceleration..in tow mode the shift supposed to be harder always.. even transmission temp warming up faster than b4 fresh fluid.. carries heat better i believe
      Important i find from years of different diesels to warm up transmission (and engine of course) to shift better and longer life for trans..
      PS ford rewrote the maintenance schedule for their benefits just like Mazda i remember did maintenance manual wrote "transmission fluid replacement not recommended the fluid is for the lifetime of the transmission" and poor owner assume it was great no extra service needed ended up with transmission failure
      Ford schedule write 160xxxkm for fluid service 1st for my 1ton workhorse.. that service will have new fluid obviously when you have ford sell u a new transmission and install it.. i had the ford 5yr maintenance package for breaks fluids etc sold on with these specific words.. just to find out my brakes squeaking and I was told its not worn enough to allow the replacement yet..at 72xxxkm
      Or finding out that no diff,trans, coolant ever be included in the package due to maintenance intervals rewrote and extended outside the 5yr maintenance package cutoff..

      @@MrEuroWolfie At this point I don’t give a fuck my 5 year powertrain warranty is up and I’ve had provens 200 horse lbf/qr tune and high pressure med shift trans tune in for 2 years. Re flashed tune and done kam Reset and re learn process a couple times over 2 years. God fucking awful trans tunes. Beat the fuck out of it every day put about 40k miles on it so far. It’s whining like a mf(doesn’t really surprise me too much and don’t care at this point but still expected more out of their tunes). When it blows I’m gonna throw a warren diesel comp 6r140 in it and 10mm stroker pump, s370 turbo and intake piping and call it a day.

    witch one controls 4th gear? mine flares,slips does all kinds of crap going from 3rd to 4th and it will shift into 4th then a 4th and a half

      @@MadelynnG18 8 months later still does it. I let off the throttle when it flares. Slips in fifth loaded now. Waiting for the tranny to grenade then I'll get a $10k BD transmission

      The 4th and a half is your torque converter locking up.

      @@1979kw mine has done the same thing 4th and a half is tc lockup and 5th gear tc locked wot and slipping from my experience I believe is tc lockup clutch slipping according the my data logs. Waiting on it to blow to buy a built trans
